KCM made a major modification to the Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) changing the circuit from feeding post leach thickeners in parallel with leach discharge for solid ?liquid separation to a Counter Current Decantation (CCD) configuration utilising most of the existing equipment. The new circuit is aimed at improving copper recovery from approximately 70% to 79% through enhanced wash efficiency. The re-introduction of CCD circuit at elevated throughput of 46 000-tpd design was made possible due to the EIMCO E-Duc technology design which is an auto-dilution system that enhances solids settling rate. Commissioning (manual operation) which accommodated on-going operational requirements was phased and completed in January 2004. The circuit stabilised in subsequent months and in March alone an all time record copper recovery of 81.8% was achieved which contributed an extra 779 tonnes copper above the plant?s projected production plans. 100% of the project cost was paid back by end of April 2004 This paper discusses the work involved and the challenges faced during the re-commission

Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. "The Shangri-La hotel and luxury condominium tower, recently opened on University Avenue in downtown Toronto, required eight levels of underground structure, four extending into the shale bedrock.Isherwood Geostructural Engineers was retained in 2007 by Anchor Shoring Limited to provide an alternative design-build solution to better address serious foundation risks. The site, bounded on three sides by City streets, abuts an existing 1957 14-storey building with five underground levels to the north. Sitting on the rock surface along the east perimeter under University Avenue runs the existing Toronto Transit Commission’s University Subway Line built by cut-and-cover in the 1950’s and which was believed to lie very near the property boundary at the southeast corner of the site.The bedrock under Toronto is known to contain very high locked-in horizontal stresses, much higher than can be resisted by shoring techniques, which result in inevitable wall movement when excavating deep into the rock. The strategy adopted to control the risk to the Subway, adjacent building, and major utilities is described in the paper, along with the comprehensive monitoring of movements, and their comparison to predictions.The ProjectThe 66-storey Shangri-La hotel and luxury condominium tower, recently constructed on University Avenue in downtown Toronto, houses 222 hotel rooms in floors 1-17; 287 residences on floors 18-49; and private estates including two 2-storey penthouses on floors 50-66. These comprise 873,000 square feet of development. Eight levels of underground basement are required to provide parking and other amenities, the lower four extending into the shale bedrock."

The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a four year mineral assessment of the 5.7 million acre Valdez Creek Mining District in Southcentral Alaska, as part of its ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report is a summary of the 1987 field work, which included the examination of mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the study area. Placer gold has been the most important metal produced in the area, and production totaled 161,131 oz, with the majority of the production coming from the Valdez Creek Mine. Lode gold and silver production totaled 1,581 oz and 8,617 oz, respectively and came mainly from the Golden Zone Mine. Varying amounts of other metals, including copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, antimony, chrome, nickel, cobalt, tin, tungsten and platinum exist in the study area. Occurrences of industrial limestone and coal are also located in the area.

A study to explore the potential of utilizing the transport time required to move coal miners to and from the working sections. Consideration was given to all forms of training and presentation media, taking into account such environmental factors as noise, dynamic interferences, visibility, physical constraints, and contaminants. Indications of managements? and workers' attitudes toward man-trip training were also assessed. The final product was a proposed prototype training system for man-trip training. THE minerals that collectively are known as chromite form an isomorphous series of the general formula (Mg,Fe) 0. (Cr,Al,Fe) 203. So wide is the range in chemical composition in this group that chrome ore consisting entirely of the mineral chromite may range from less than 30 pct to more than 60 pct Cr203. The most comprehensive published data on the chemical com- position of chromite are by Stevens,62 who made complete analyses of 52 samples of chromite concentrate from many localities in North, Cen- [ ] tral, and South America. These samples were mechanically purified to remove associated silicates and might be regarded as the cleanest chromite that could be obtained by any mechanical milling process. Fig 1 shows the predominant zone of isomorphism, within the triangular prism of composition defined by the mineralogical end members of the series, wherein his analyzed samples fell.

An extensive laboratory grinding study was carried out on a magnetite ore in order to assess the grinding behaviour of magnetic concentrate and tail from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS).The test work involved Bond ball mill testing, rod milling, low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), and batch ball milling down to product sizes of around P80~25 microns. A total of 18 Bond tests and over 150 batch grinding tests and sieve sizing were carried out. Throughout the grinding tests, power draw was continuously monitored. The relationship between the grinding energy and product size was analysed using the conventional energy-size concepts. It was found that the Rittinger equation fits the experimental data well. However, Bond?s equation does not fit the experimental data well, and therefore a modified Bond equation was developed. Differences in grinding properties between the magnetic and non-magnetic component were analysed and compared to the bulk ore. It was found that grinding properties differ significantly and therefore separate grinding test work may be required for each grinding step in the magnetite ore beneficiation flowsheet. During fiscal year 1969, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in 66 projects to improve methods for producing and utilizing petroleum. Programs directed toward the continued conservation of this natural resource, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, were carried out through research performed at four laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Over 100 technical papers and reports were published by the Bureau or others based on this research, and numerous other reports were prepared for U.S. Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

Magotteaux, with the co-operation of Anglo Platinum, has erected a fully instrumented pilot plant at Frank concentrator, which is being used to study the influence of a variety of grinding parameters. This paper will discuss only the influence of mill speed and pulp density on secondary stage grinding. A Ø0.82 x1 m open circuit mill was used with reclaimed Merensky tailings as feed. The conclusions apply to this pilot plant but further investigation needs to be done to verify whether the same trends will be applicable to a large industrial-scale mill.

In February 2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) commissioned its first full-scale ultra fine grinding (UFG) plant to supplement existing roaster concentrate treatment capacity. This process involves the fine grinding of refractory pyritic concentrate to 10µm, followed by direct cyanide leaching for the recovery of gold. By this means gold is economically extracted from the concentrate without the need to first oxidise the host pyrite. This paper details the history of the project from initial laboratory testwork comparing possible treatment options, to current performance of the 12 tph plant. This includes the cost comparison of the major treatment options, the laboratory and pilot scale UFG performance, the UFG mill selection, cyanide leaching of UFG product, commissioning and plant performance to date.

The blast -hole method for drilling and breaking ground is not new to the mining industry . For several years it has been used rather extensively in Canada , particularly in the gold mines , where it was first developed and where the major advances in the technique as applied to present - day mining problems have been made . At present , 40 mines in Canada and the United States are using the method in one form or another , and from all indications its use will increase in the future . In two California mines , blast -hole diamond drilling is now used for a part of or for all stoping operations , and in one of these it is used to some extent in development work . At the Mountain Copper Co.'s Hornet mine in Shasta County, about 50 percent of the pyritic sulfide ore produced is mined by the blast - hole method , and the U. S. Vanadium Corp. mines 80 percent of the ore produced at its Pine Creek tungsten mine in Inyo County by this method . At Pine Creek , long -hole drilling and blasting is used for mining pillars also , and in pre - stoping development . The blast -hole diamond - drilling method is not applicable to all types of ore bodies . A third property in California , the El Dorado Limestone Company , El Dorado County, tried the method for several months in 1943 and 1944 , but , owing to certain factors that greatly increased mining cost , the company soon returned to conventional mining methods .

In Japan, a cartridged emulsion explosive is generally used for tunneling. The workers are compelled to approach the face on charging the explosives into the drill hole with the tamping rod. Therefore, the workers are exposed to the risk of the disaster with the cave-in and the falling rock. The mechanization of the tunnel work has been advancing gradually. Especially, the development of the mechanization for charging work is desired in order to avoid the risk of disaster on workers. Recently, some charging machines such as the bulk emulsion explosives have been evaluated. However, a universal method has not been established yet, because the evaluated machines were not adequately suited from the point of the regulations and the consumption style of explosives.

"The New Mexico potash exploration described herein was begun in February- 1944 by the Federal Bureau of Mines with the object of determining the amount of potash ore in the United States Potash Reserve in Eddy County, N. Mex., by exploring the deposit from the surface with vertical drill holes. The work was completed in October of the same year after 16 holes had been drilled on the reserve and in the immediate vicinity.The Potash Reserve is located in secs. 26, 27, 34, and 35, T. 20 S., R. 29 E., Eddy County, N. Mex., about 14 miles northeast of the city of Carlsbad. Drilling was done in secs. 26 and 35 of the reserve, in sec. 14 to the north, and secs. 25 and 36 to the east. All work was done on Government-owned, unleased land.The reserve may be reached from Carlsbad by traveling northeast by automobile for about 14 miles on paved U. S. Highway 62. This highway passes through the southern part of the reserve. Other parts may be reached by a State highway which passes along the eastern side of the area, then by poor dirt roads to various drilling sites. A branch of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad also passes across the southern part of the reserve en route from Carlsbad to the plant and mine of the Potash Co. of America, a few miles northeast of the Project and 22 miles from Carlsbad.Work on the project was greatly facilitated by the help of Ralph H. King, associate geologist, R. K. Bailey, geochemist, H. C. Spicer, geophysicist, Hope Bunker, junior geologist, and R. H Allport, district mining supervisor, all of the Federal Geological Survey; and Charles H. Johnson, who at that time was district engineer for New Mexico for the Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines."

The Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Co. concluded a cost-sharing contract in 1975, the objective of which was to demonstrate the Herrin No. 6 coalbed in southern Illinois can be mined safely by longwall methods. Under the agreement, three longwall panels are to be mined at Old Ben No. 24 mine. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for specifying a roof-support system designed to control hazardous ground. Old Ben Coal Co. and Bureau engineers selected lemiscate-type roof shields. A rock mechanics program and geological mapping provide early warning capability and criteria for future equipment design. The effect of mining on the surface was monitored by a surface survey to develop subsidence-prediction criteria for the Illinois coal basin. The first of the three longwall panels started up in September 1976 and was completed in May 1977. The major adverse condition was the occurrence of limestone concretions, called coal balls, in massive pods. The shields provided adequate roof control even in faulty ground. Operation of the second panel started on August 1, 1977, following panel-to-panel transfer of the equipment. The accident rate was low.

"Introduction.Several hundred thousand open lights are daily carried in coal mines of the United States, each lamp being a menace to life and property through fire or explosion. They have been responsible for many disasters in the past, and will be again. Flame safety lamps have been available for over a hundred years, but during the last ten years safe and practical electric lamps have been perfected. These have eliminated many of the flame safety lamps, and in a few mines have replaced open flame lamps. But there are still more than twice as many open lamps as electric lamps in our mines, and the open lamps should be discarded in favor of an approved type of electric lamp. There are several electric miners' lamps which have been approved by the Bureau of Mines for safety and efficiency, give good light, and are easily maintained and carried, some flame safety lamps will always be used, hut mostly for detecting gas; although they might be supplanted if some simple, reliable, and cheap gas detector were developed.Explosion Hazards from Open Lights.An open light and gas*** constitute a vicious hazard; while if there be coal dust present in the vicinity the consequences are multiplied many times. An open light and black blasting powder also constitute an explosion hazard, vividly attested by several serious disasters."

Part 1 of this report is concerned with the electric-furnace production of calcium aluminate and iron alloy from a variety of siliceous ferruginous ores of aluminum. The furnacing research was directed, first, to determine the extent of the field in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, in which calcium aluminates with the optimum leaching characteristics are obtained; second, to produce suitable quantities of these aluminate mixtures for pilot-plant leaching tests; third, to investigate the physical chemistry of the reduction reactions during furnacing; and, fourth, to study the economics of the process. The third and fourth steps were not completed. Part 2 comprises another phase of the work and will appear as a second Report of Investigations. It deals with the extraction of metallurgical-grade alumina from the calcium aluminate slag produced in the electric furnace and includes the following steps: leaching, desilicating, precipitating, dewatering, filtering, and washing of the aluminum hydrate. No claim is made that the data are complete, nor has the chronological order of obtaining data been followed. Rather, it is emphasized that additional work is necessary if the full possibilities of the process are to be evaluated. and made available.

This report describes in detail the results of petrographic research conducted on 21 phosphate ores representing important deposits in southwestern Montana , southeastern Idaho , and northeastern Utah . The ores are described and categorized by mineralogical and chemical composition , thermal behavior of organic carbon , and textural constitution . Descriptive and genetic classification schemes applicable to western phosphate ores are discussed ; results from related studies made of the collophane mineralogy are also presented . The latter studies were centered on determining unit - cell dimensions and CO₂ , P2O5 , and fluorine content of collophane concentrates of 11 high - grade phosphate- rock hand specimens selected solely for this purpose . On the basis of this investigation , operational methods have been developed for quantitatively describing textural and compositional features that are likely to be significant in determining the response of phosphate ores to conventional beneficiation treatments ; systems for classifying the ores in relation to these features have been proposed . Studies to date point out distinct textural and compositional variations in the western phosphates and illustrate their importance in determining optimum beneficiation procedure .

Para ello, se utlizará dos formas de aplicación: La primera se da en el tratamiento por cianuración de las menas, donde el carbón mineral es el medio precipitante de los metales disueltos. Mientras que la segunda ocurre cuando el carbón ha sido separado de las pulpas cianuradas, conviertiéndose en un agente reductor de los metales de fundición. De forma tal que se logra una recuperación integral de los metales preciosos y básicos en las barras de fundición.

The gold district of northwestern Quebec, though it has attracted such widespread attention during the past year, is still in the prospect stage throughout, and one must preface any remarks about it with the plain statement that its capacity to produce gold commercially is still subject to proof. However, this proof may be forthcoming any day, and from widely separated localities. Consequently it is of interest to note some of the features of the region and of the prospects now being developed. First I shall note the relation of this mining development to the province of Quebec and to the Dominion; then will follow a brief resume of the known geological facts; and finally I shall describe briefly some of the more advanced prospects developed during the past twelve-month. Those that have followed closely the fortunes of the new gold-field will find little that is new in what follows, but it may serve a useful purpose for others by bringing together scattered items of information and presenting them as a whole. GOLD MINING AND AGRICULTURE First let us consider the gold belt in its relation to the province of Quebec. Apart from the world-renowned asbestos camp south of the St. Lawrence, it is the only mineral development of major importance the province has experienced. It is the first important development in the province's vast area of Precambrian rocks, most of which remains as yet totally unexplored and unprospected. The relative importance of this first mining camp in northern Quebec cannot as yet be gauged, but it is bound to stimulate an active interest in the other mineral-bearing areas now known to exist, and in the vast unexplored spaces.
