The Bureau of Mines investigated a microprocessor-based real-time control and monitoring system for uranium mining applications. The system is capable of controlling and monitoring up to 768 stations within 3 km of the central processor on a common four-wire cable. It can be used in conjunction with detectors to continuously monitor and display radiation working levels at points throughout the mine. Surface alarms are sounded for critical situations such as rapid radiation buildup, loss of power to monitors or fans, and changes in air door position. Permanent records of all changes are automatically printed out with their time of occurrence. Printouts can also be obtained for shift reports or trend logs. The system can be used to remotely control fan startup and shut-down, and also can alert miners of underground conditions by blowing horns or turning on lights. Battery backup keeps the system operative for up to 4 h in case of a mine power outage. A special software feature permits automatic, time-delayed, sequential restart of fans.

C. H. Samans and W. R. Ham (Chicago, Ill., and Dix-field, Maine, respectively)-—For several years we have been studying transitions of this basic type in metals, alloys, glasses, etc. Usually, however, they are not so clearly marked as those which the authors have found, and hence are much more difficult to determine accurately. Since our studies indicate that most of them occur virtually unchanged (as far as temperature is concerned) regardless of the form in which the element appears, we believe that they are a characteristic of the atom. Specifically, we believe that there is an additional rotational degree of freedom possessed by the nucleus which has not been considered heretofore. This nuclear rotation is made up of several components, each related to the several quantum shells of electrons. In chromium there are four of these shells and hence four separate series of characteristic transition temperatures. The lowest temperature at which any transition occurs, based on the present state of our computations, is 125°K, 4° higher than the authors' value of 121°K. A convergence of this series, we believe, shows up at the higher temperature of 2085 °K, surprisingly close to the transformation temperature of 2103°K recently announced by N. J. Grant of M.I.T. for a body-centered to face-centered transformation in chromium. Likewise, our computations indicate a temperature of 311°K for the second transition temperature, reported by the authors as 310 °K. A convergence of this series, we believe, shows up at a higher temperature as the melting point at 2163°K. Although our work on these series must, in a sense, still be regarded as empirical, since we do not understand fully as yet just what the series mean, it is based on a reasonably firm picture. The individual constants, from which the various series are computed for each element, comes directly from the X-ray K absorption limit. Furthermore, the same basic method has accounted for transformation and melting temperatures in about 50 of the chemical elements, which is all we have tried thus far. In many cases the only known transformation is the melting point, but in others the occurrence of transformations or other transitions, equally as well marked as those of the authors, has been pointed out by others. These observations have assisted us greatly. Consequently we were very pleased to see the authors' excellent work in finding these two transitions in chromium. With these confirming data, our picture of this element is clarified considerably, so we expect that at least some of our work can be published in the near future. R. C. Ruder (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Cu., Wilmington, Del.)—The authors' interpretation of these transitions in terms of 3d to 4s electronic structure transitions is most interesting. It would be interesting to have additional experimental evidence of such transitions from the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient in the neighborhood of the property changes discussed in this paper. Simple theory15 suggests the Hall coefficient as a measure of the free electron (or s electron) concentration per unit volume. It has been shown that for paramagnetic'" and ferromagnetic1? metals the simple theory is in fact too simple. However, the existence of a discontinuity in the Hall coefficient would provide information which should aid both in our understanding of these transitions and the significance of the Hall coefficient in these metals. It was rather surprising that no significant paramagnetic effects were observed. In this connection the recent work of McGuire and Kriessman18 is cited. They measured the magnetic susceptibility of chromium from 20" to 1460 °C. They also observed no large change in the susceptibility although there might be a change in slope in the vicinity of the 40 °C transition. The existence of these 3d to 4s electronic transitions has been discussed in connection with the paramagnetic susceptibility behavior of nickel and nickel alloys.'"-" Assuming a correspondence principle between classical and quantum mechanical paramagnetic theory and using classical theory to calculate the effective Bohr magneton number from the Curie constant for substances obeying the Curie-Weiss law," it is found that the effective magneton number is a function of temperature. The process of calculation involves the inverse of the differential of the 1/x4 vs. temperature curve so that good and numerous data are necessary to obtain significant results. The data of Fallot23 show a discontinuous increase of about 12 pct in the effective magneton number between 850" and 900 oC, followed by a continuous increase up to the melting point. The data of Sucksmith and Pearce24 show a possible 8 pct increase. The older data of Terry25 and Weiss and Foex26 show a continuous increase. It is possible that small amounts of impurity atoms change these electronic transitions significantly. Fallot's23 data on a nickel alloy with 4.5 atomic pct Fe indicate that the discontinuity occurs around 1300 °C. Systematic investigation of the transition metals for transitions of this nature should provide information which would be very valuable for our understanding of these metals. The absence of antiferromagnetic structures in chromium has been shown by Shull27 using neutron diffraction techniques. M. E. Fine, E. S. Greiner, and W. C. Ellis (authors' reply)—The remarks by Drs. Samans and Ham are certainly very interesting, in particular those pertaining to the close agreement between the theoretically calculated values for transition temperatures in chromium and the experimental values reported by a number of investigators. This is a remarkable achievement and we shall look forward to a more detailed presentation of the method followed in their calculations. We do not believe that the transition in pure chromium near 40 °C remains temperature invariant with alloying, as was reported by Samans and Ham for a number of the substances that they studied. We have not done any work with alloys but base our belief on the results of earlier studies in which less pure chromium was included and considerably lower transition temperatures were observed. Forage plots were established on agricultural lands contaminated by acid mining waste. The acid produced through oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides caused elevated solubility and plant availability of copper, zinc, and arsenic which killed vegetation and polluted surface and groundwater. Soil amendments including agricultural lime (CaCO3), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), phosphorus, and organic matter were used to reduce the toxicity of metals. Several acid-tolerant grasses were used to vegetate the amended soils. Various soil extraction techniques were used to see which best correlated with vegetation performance. The extractions corresponded to three "forms" of metals in soil including soluble (water-saturation extract); plant-available/weakly adsorbed (DTPA extract); and total (HNO3/H202 extract). Of the extractants tested the DTPA levels appeared to correlate best with metal levels in plant tissue. The DTPA soil extractant serves as a useful tool in predicting potential phytotoxicity of mine waste materials.

A bench-scale evaluation of coal and coal waste materials as aggregate materials for use in longwall mine supports was undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines Health and Safety program on ground control. Performance data were obtained on portland cement concretes (PCC) prepared with coal and coal wastes as aggregate materials. The effects of high-early-strength accelerators on strength and creep and of superplasticizers on strength properties of PCC formulated with coal and coal waste were investigated. Concrete formulated with a high-early-strength accelerator and coal and coal waste has 20 and 40 pet greater compressive strength, respectively, than the control samples without admixture. A concrete formulated with coal waste and the high-early-strength accelerator, using four bags of cement per cubic yard and a water-cement ratio of 1.0, had the lowest creep value of all the coal- and coal-waste-formulated PCC's tested.

This report presents theoretical studies and experimental work dealing with the detection of dangerous roof and pillar conditions in underground mines through measure¬ment of temperature differences on the surface of the mine opening. The theoretical work is directed at modeling the circumstances where a loose slab of rock might be detected. The experimental work provides input data for the theoretical models. At the beginning of the project, little was known by the authors of the conditions that would permit detection of a loose slab of rock or coal by measuring the surface temperature differences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines had found that there were detectable surface temperature differences on the roofs and pillars of mines. The Bureau contracted with Colorado School of Mines to measure temperature profiles around mine openings in an effort to learn if the temperature differences they had detected were directly related to loose pieces of roof and pillar rock. The Bureau was principally interested in learning if loose rock could be found in coal mines by measurement of surface temperature differences with an infrared thermometer.

Take regulations, for instance. Complying with regulatory requirements is just part of the job for those involved with explosives. But in recent years, it seems as if new or revised regulations in areas such as hazardous materials training, drug and alcohol testing, security issues, or local licensing/permitting standards are changing the way we operate on a recurring basis. Simply keeping track of all of these regulations has become a full-time job.

Banded hematite jasper (BHJ) containing 45.2% Fe, 32.64% SiO2, 0.63 % Al2O3 and 1.25 % LOI is found difficult to beneficiate either by magnetic or flotation techniques due to fine intergrowth of jasper with hematite. Phase transformation by reduction roasting with activated charcoal followed by low intensity magnetic separation to achieve a suitable iron concentrate has been attempted in this study. The mineralogy of the ore and different roasted products has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to understand the reduction mechanism. The magnetite formation is observed at 850ºC while metallic iron appeared at a higher temperature. The effects of reduction variables such as reduction time (30-270 min), temperature (750-1050ºC), and reductant (1-12 %) using activated charcoal are studied. An iron concentrate with 64.65% Fe and 55.8% recovery could be obtained under optimum conditions of temperature: 850ºC, time: 1.5 h, and reductant: 6% by weight.

Neste trabalho foi determinada a influência do tamanho e da densidade de partículas sobre a perda magnética de um aço silício de grão não orientado (GNO) contendo 2%Si. Amostras provenientes de bobinas laminadas a frio após recozimento final, com dimensões de 305x30x0,54mm e teores de carbono 32 ppm e 46 ppm, foram submetidas a tratamentos de envelhecimento de 100 até 225ºC. A evolução da perda magnética durante o tratamento térmico de envelhecimento foi determinada interrompendo-se o tratamento em intervalos de tempo variados e realizando-se os testes magnéticos. Completado o ciclo de envelhecimento, todas as amostras foram avaliadas no microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV) para caracterização dos precipitados. Os resultados determinaram que o aumento da perda magnética ao longo do tempo, para uma dada temperatura, está associado à precipitação de carbonetos. O maior aumento da perda magnética encontrado correspondeu a uma distribuição de precipitados com tamanho médio entre 1,1 µm e 1,3 µm e a uma densidade de partículas de 0,025 partículas/µm2.

A busca por redução de peso e maior segurança dos veículos vem impulsionando a obtenção de novos aços de elevado desempenho. Os aços bifásicos vêm sendo desenvolvidos e utilizados devido a sua considerável resistência mecânica e boa conformabilidade. No presente trabalho foram realizados os recozimentos intercríticos direto e contínuo em um aço de composição 0,121%C-0,499%Si-1,58%Mn-0,021%Cr com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do tempo e temperatura de intercrítica na dureza da ferrita e do constituinte MA (martensita e austenita retida). A avaliação dos resultados foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e ensaios de ultramicrodureza. Foi observada a influência do tempo e da temperatura na morfologia e na quantidade de constituintes formados. Também foram verificados diferentes valores de dureza nos constituintes e ainda em distintas regiões dos grãos de ferrita. Os resultados indicaram maiores durezas para regiões próximas da interface ferrita/martensita e diminuição de dureza do constituinte MA e aumento dos valores na ferrita com a elevação do tempo.

Durante estudos de síntese hidrotérmica (realizada em presença de ácido acético e em autoclave à temperatura de 160oC) com o propósito de obter-se boemita a partir de uma gibsita comercial, observou-se uma morfologia diferenciada nos cristais de boemita obtidos: os mesmos apresentaram-se na forma de placas finas de perfil pseudohexagonal. No entanto, quando a síntese é conduzida nas mesmas condições de temperatura somente em água destilada, a morfologia da boemita formada é a de cristais cúbicos. No intuito de tentar entender o mecanismo do crescimento dos cristais de boemita na presença de íons acetato, foram realizadas novas sínteses, envolvendo o mesmo procedimento de preparação, porém variando os meios nos quais a reação ocorre. A partir de novas sínteses realizadas com acetato de potássio em meio aquoso neutro (pH=7) ou ácido (pH=2), foi observado que a presença do íon acetato no meio reacional é determinante para a obtenção da morfologia lamelar. A estrutura cristalina dos cristais obtidos foi caracterizada por DRX e a sua morfologia foi examinada por MEV.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar sistematicamente as etapas do processamento termomecânico de um aço SAE 1070 comercial. O aço foi trefilado a seco por 12 passes consecutivos com reduções médias entre 15% e 21%. A deformação verdadeira acumulada ao final do 12º passe foi de 2,52. Em seguida o material foi recozido a 1000ºC por 10, 20, 30, 60 e 120 min. A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada com o auxílio da técnica de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e microscopia de força atômica. A rugosidade do material foi medida via microscopia confocal. O material teve ainda seu comportamento mecânico avaliado por meio de ensaio de dureza Vickers. Os fios de aço apresentaram a estrutura “curling” após o processo de trefilação. Essa estrutura foi substituída por uma estrutura perlítica refinada quando o material foi submetido ao recozimento. O ensaio de microdureza mostrou que, para restaurar as propriedades mecânicas do material, um recozimento entre 20 e 30 min seria suficiente. A análise da topografia revelou que o processo de trefilação altera consideravelmente a rugosidade do material.

As tensões residuais são geradas, sobre um material em equilíbrio, após a deformação plástica não uniforme causada por cargas mecânicas, térmicas ou mudanças de fase. Falhas estruturais podem ocorrer por uma combinação dos efeitos das tensões de serviço e das tensões residuais o que torna importante a medição e avaliação de como estas afetam as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais. Neste trabalho investigaram-se os valores médios das tensões residuais da fase austenítica de amostras de aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 por técnica de difração de raios-x. Acompanhou-se o comportamento do plano 420 com radiação CuKa (?= 1,5419 A ) em difratometro de geometria Bragg-Brentano. As amostras foram tratadas a 600°C com tempos de encharque de 10 minutos, 20 minutos e 8 horas em atmosfera ambiente e resfriamento ao ar e água do mar. Os resultados foram analisados pelo método do sen²? e indicam que as variações microestruturais e térmicas, relacionadas aos diferentes tratamentos, influenciam o valor médio das tensões residuais da fase em estudo.

A metalurgia do pó torna-se um processo importante para obtenção de peças com geometria complexa, tornando-as cada vez mais viáveis. O objetivo desse trabalho é caracterizar e avaliar a influência da energia de mistura e tempo de mistura na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas (dureza) da liga Fe 70% - Ni 30%, utilizadas em componentes eletrônicos e materiais estruturais de peças de motores automotivos, sendo produzidas por metalurgia do pó (MP). As ligas Fe-Ni foram misturadas a baixa e alta energia, 25 rpm e 200 rpm, respectivamente, por 2 (duas) e 4 (quatro) horas, compactadas uniaxialmente a frio com pressão de compactação de 8 toneladas e sinterizadas a 1.100ºC. Foram realizadas simulações para previsão das fases presentes através do software de simulação termodinâmica, Thermo-Calc, onde mostrou a possível existência de fases CCC e CFC. A microestrutura foi avaliada por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), possibilitando a visualização da quantidade e do tamanho dos poros, bem como forma e tamanho dos grãos. Foi realizada espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS) para análise química pontual e mapeamento químico.

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. The fundamental principles by which bismuth may be removed from lead by pyrometallurgical processes are enumerated. Qualitative discussion of the phase diagrams concerned is followed by presentation of quantitative diagrams. Brief mention is made of the practical aspects. Data presented show how chemical lead (<0.005 pct Bi) may be produced by the Jollivet, Dittmer, and Kroll-Betterton processes. BISMUTH is an element whose properties are very similar to those of lead, and its minerals are associated to a greater or lesser extent with nearly all the major lead ore deposits of the world. In consequence, the lead produced contains bismuth unless a special debismuthizing process is practiced. There does not appear to be any published comprehensive review of the effect of bismuth as an impurity on the properties of lead, and there is some uncertainty as to the beneficial or detrimental effects of small amounts of bismuth in lead used for particular applications. Standard specifications of most countries stipulate a maximum bismuth content of 0.005 pct for chemical lead. With one exception, this specification is met only by lead producers whose ores are relatively bismuth-free, or whose refineries are electrolytic. In lead for certain applications a higher bismuth content is preferred by some fabricators.&apos; In contrast to the refining for silver, copper, and antimony, the refining for bismuth does not usually result in a large overalil economic gain from the sale of byproduct. Thus, debismuthizing is customarily practiced only if market conditions demand a lead with a bismuth content lower than that produced by classical refining; i.e., softening, desilverizing, and zinc refining. Until this century, debismuthizing was carried out only a:; an incidental result of desilverizing, as later described. This century has seen the development of the Betts electrolytic process—the only successful one of many electrolytic processes proposed and patented —and a number of precipitation processes based on the pioneering work of Kroll,&apos; although only one of these, the Kroll-Better ton process,&apos; is in wide commercial use today. It is proposed in this paper to deal only with the pyrometallurgical processes, excluding those based on aqueous electrolysis. Historical Background Prior to 1833 silver (and incidentally bismuth) could not be removed from lead. To recover silver from rich bullion, the only course available to lead refineries was to cupel the bullion, forming a slag of litharge. The first slag tappings or skimmings, on reduction, yielded soft lead of very low silver and bismuth contents. Intermediate skimmings yielded a lead of somewhat higher silver and bismuth contents, which could if desired be recupelled. The last skimmings yielded a litharge very high in bismuth, which could by successive oxidation and reduction cycles be separated into high purity bismuth, and lead returns. This oxidation reduction process, with modern operating techniques, can still be used today to produce a portion of a lead refinery&apos;s output of very low bismuth content, as discussed later. In 1833 Pattinsone discovered that lead bullion could be purified of silver and bismuth by fractional crystallization, the primary lead crystals formed by partial freezing being purer than the melt. l. INTRODUCTION. IN casting a thermal balance of the heat generated and absorbed in a blast-furnace treating lead-, copper- and similar non-ferrous ores, assumptions have always to be made for the values of the heat of formation of slag. ? Considering that the larger part of the charge introduced into the furnace comes out in the form of slag, the significance becomes apparent of a lack of heat-values for the singulo-silicate, which is the type of slags commonly made. The aim of the present investigation is to supply these heat-values as far as possible with the apparatus and the time available. The heats of formation of the ferrous and manganous bi-silicates have been determined by Le Chatelier; 1 those of some silicates other than iron and manganese by Tschernobaeff:2 finally Richards 3 gives a figure for a copper blast-furnace slag of known composition. The existing data and those resulting from the present investigation are assembled in Table VI. II. MATERIALS USED. The materials used in the experiments were silica, ferrous oxide, and calcium carbonate. Silica.-The silica sold in the market as chemically pure usually contains small amounts of magnesia, lime, and alumina, and is therefore not suited for the work. Because trade increased among various nations after World War II, the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe established a Classification Working Party in 1949 to develop an International system for classifying coal. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed in accordance with characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Terms for describing similar or identical coals differed in each nation. This caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade and also hampered exchange of technical information on problems of coal utilization. Experts4/ participating in the classification project early in their work agreed that two systems should be formulated, one for the higher rank coals or so-called "hard" coals in European terminology and the other one for the lower rank coals, the latter designated mainly as brown coals and lignites in the various countries. Rank refers to the degree of metamorphism (progressive alteration) in the natural coalification series from lignite and brown coal to anthracite. The system for classification of hard coals was published late in 1956 as a document of the United Nations.5/ Results of a study for applying this system to American coals were published in 1958.6/

A geração de resíduos sólidos tem se convertido em um problema para a sociedade. Milhões de toneladas de resíduos sólidos são produzidos diariamente no mundo causando numerosos problemas ambientais e sociais. Além disso, o acelerado consumo junto com o avanço tecnológico e o curto ciclo de vida dos produtos têm elevado a quantidade e complexidade dos resíduos sólidos descartados, tornando a situação ainda mais complicada. Nas últimas duas décadas, a indústria de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (EEE) tem acelerado sua produção vertiginosamente, tendo como resultado o subsequente aumento na geração de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (REEE). Os REEE apresentam na sua composição materiais tóxicos e se descartados irregularmente, podem contaminar o meio ambiente e causar danos à saúde publica. Por outro lado, a sua reciclagem é um assunto que merece atenção especial, não só do ponto de vista de tratamento de resíduos, mas também do ponto de vista econômico. A fim de contribuir com a reciclagem e a diminuição dos resíduos sólidos, o presente trabalho pretende apresentar um estudo do processamento mecânico das placas mães de computadores descartados, visando recuperar o cobre, o níquel e o zinco presentes no resíduo.

This document details the method whereby Allen Corporation of America gathered and analyzed data and developed an annotated bibliography of metal and nonmetal mine fire reports (1950-1979). The primary objective of this program was to develop the annotated bibliography which included MSHA accident reports and periodicals. Two additional objectives were to gather data on non-reportable fires and to conduct statistical analyses on the data to delineate trends. Data was acquired from three major areas: periodicals, MSHA fire reports, and mine safety directors. Data was separated into reportable fires (at least ½ - hour duration or injury), non-reportable fires, and opinion data. The data was then analyzed by time trends, state, ore, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agent. The authors make a number of recommendations: (1) improved stationary electrical equipment design and fire protection, (2) improved design of mobile equipment to separate combustibles from ignition sources, (3) improved maintenance, (4) improved housekeeping, and (5) improved training. The document is divided into two volumes and an appendix. Volume I contains data acquisition procedures, data analysis procedures, and conclusions and recommendations. Volume II contains a chronological list of mine fires and fifteen indexes to assist the reader in locating fire incident report of interest. The Appendix contains the annotated bibliography of over 300 metal and nonmetal mine fire reports and journal articles and a list of non-reportable fires.
