"For about 20 years, the use of bacteria to control the flotation process for the production of raw material concentrates has been the subject of worldwide scientific and engineering efforts. The objective is to reduce the consumption of biologically non-degradable toxic reagents. The principle idea is to use the activity of bacteria in natural leaching processes – known since the middle of the last century – for controlling flotation processes.It was discovered that the selective activity of bacteria during the extraction of raw material concentrates by means of flotation could also be achieved with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), excreted by bacteria. EPS, which is extracted by means of centrifuging bacterial cultures, can help to significantly reduce the use of cyanides, approximately 200,000 t/a are used for ore dressing today.The bacterium used was Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In order to identify the bandwidth of the oxidation activity, 21 bacterial strains of the strain collection of the University of Hamburg were attracted to iron(II) sulfate and pyrite under defined conditions. All strains oxidized iron(II) sulfate ten times faster than pyrite.EPS has so far been derived from four strains. In general, EPS extracts are divided into a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic fraction. The hydrophilic fraction is composed of e.g. fucose, rhamnose and glucose; fatty acids such as dodecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and nonadecanoic acid were found in the hydrophobic fraction. Pure mineral phases and mineral mixtures were used for the flotation tests. The outcome was reproducible results with technical flotation machines. The research results known so far are mainly based on investigations with micro flotation devices, which are usually used for the characterization of reagents and which do not allow a direct translation to the technical scale."

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. Under an extremely aggressive schedule, final design of 13.5 km (8.4 miles) miles of 8.2 m (27 ft) diameter deep rock tunnel, 322 ML/day (85 million gallons / day)submersible pumping station and associated facilities were accomplished ahead of a federal court mandated consent decree schedule. Challenges overcome by the project team in enabling timely completion of the construction documents will be presented. Discussion includes evolution of final design, consideration of future O&M requirements, and risks identified for construction and operations, together with measures to manage and proactively prepare for such risks.

El Perú produce solo el 0.26 °/o de la producción anual de oro con un valor de U$ cinco millones. Si se lograse reponer el antiguo sistema mundial de monetización de la plata, este sistema recuperaría el valor que tuvo hace 100 años a.C o hasta fines de la Colonia española, o sea la relación de 15 a 1 con respecto al valor del oro.

The use of hydraulically stowed classified mill tailings as a subsidence preventative will be discussed as well as the use of sandfill in pillar recovery and as a part of the regular mining cycle.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

A carefully designed and controlled in-place destruction experiment was performed on a concrete bunker buried in 4.27 m (14 ft.) of soil. The objective was to determine if the explosive charges would collapse the structure in-place without requiring mechanical excavation. Collapse of the buried structure was first attempted by drilling holes in the soil and placing four 13.38 Kg (29.5 lb) Comp B explosive charges at a depth of 2.13 m (6.7 ft.). The configuration of the charges when detonated was 2.13 m (6.7 ft.) off the top of the concrete roof and 3.66 m (12 ft.) apart in a square pattern. Detonation of these charges created a crater ~4.88 m (16 ft.) in diameter and 2.13 m (6.7 ft.) deep, leaving ~2.13 m (6.7 ft.) of soil covering. Very limited spalling occurred on the ceiling of the concrete structure as a result of detonating these four charges. The second attempt to collapse the structure consisted of placing another single 13.38 Kg (29.5 lb) charge, identical to the first four, near the geometrical center of the bunker roof. This charge was detonated in the soil cover 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) above the reinforced concrete roof, collapsing it. Due to the collapsed roof and remaining soil cover, the structure had been collapsed in place, requiring no further demolition.

A lot of talk has been generated about the so called ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) and its potential to transform the way we interact with our homes and devices. But the true potential and value of IoT is not going to be realised by the general consumer but by businesses.This paper outlines the application of IoT in mining and how it is a natural extension to the base networks becoming commonplace in both surface and underground mines. The potential for ubiquitous monitoring throughout a mining operation at low capital and support costs will transform the ability to monitor, analyse, report and manage all of the key processes involved in a mining operation.Importantly, the paper will discuss the practical applications that the IoT offers mining and explain how this really is transformative technology, not just the latest buzz words from the information technology (IT) world. Minerales Monclova, S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) is owned by Grupo Acerero Del Norte (GAN). This company has 4 underground coal mines and 1 open pit to feed it?s steelmaking facilities located in the city of Monclova in the North of México in the state of Coahuila. The current underground mines are Mine 3, 5, 6 and 7 and the future projects are Mines 8 and 9. In the last years Mines 2 and 4 have been closed because they finished their coal resources. The remaining mines have bigger production and developments requirements in order to accomplish the goals of the company. The mines have been working in deeper and gassier areas. These conditions have required improvements in the ventilation design and methane control systems for all the mines. In some cases the ventilation of some of the MIMOSA?S mines has been increased 80%, and besides this, an intensive methane drainage program has been applied using horizontal in-seam boreholes and gob wells. The short-term ventilation plan includes the construction of 3 new vertical shafts with 5 and 6 meters diameter for Mines 5, 6 and 7 and the purchasing of bigger new main and backup fans for each one of these mines. One of these vertical shafts and the purchasing of the first 2 fans is already in process. This paper will explain the evolution and results of the ventilation and methane drainage systems in MIMOSA and the ventilation planning for the future years.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the extraction of alumina from domestic kaolin clay by leaching with boiling 26 wt-pct hydrochloric acid. Acid leaching of crushed calcined kaolin feed yields slurries that are slow settling and difficult to filter because of the presence of fine particles generated in crushing, calcining, and leaching. Laboratory research showed that tumbling and moistening crushed raw kaolin on a pelletizing disk caused the fines to agglomerate on the surfaces of the larger particles, while the sharp edges and corners of the larger particles were rounded off. Minus 16-mesh crushed raw kaolin was misted on a 36-in-diam, 8-in-deep pelletizing disk at rates of 175 to 250 lb/hr, and was calcined in either a rotary or a fluidized-bed calciner; negligible degradation occurred. The physical properties of the misted calcined kaolin were evaluated in the leaching system of the clay-hydrochloric acid miniplant. Only minor attrition occurred during leaching, and the slurry was readily filtered on a continuous belt filter.

Methods for reducing the cyclic nature of drill and blast tunneling operations have been long needed. A miniature blasting system using 10 mm (.375 in.) holes, 0.91 m (36 in.) deep, and blasting only one hole at a time makes it practical for men to work behind a shield, remaining at the face during the entire process. A prototype automated module was developed to drill, load the hole and initiate the detonation without moving from the hole. A unique cost effective gell explosive and a novel, low cost initiation method were developed.

Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

Cable bolts have been very effective in mine ground control. Non-tensioned and tensioned cable bolts are now used for both primary and supplemental bolting (Suder, 2001; Mirabile, 2010). In the United States, cable bolts are typically installed in either 1 or 1-3/8 in. (25 or 35 mm) diameter drill holes and, if point anchored only, are utilized with 4 - 5 equivalent feet (1.2 - 1.5 m) of resin. Cable bolts can be tensioned by various methods such as using an expansion shell mounted on the cable or post-tensioned with a hydraulic cable tensioning unit. In recent years there has been a desire to completely encapsulate the cable bolt for corrosion protection. Fully encapsulating a cable bolt with traditional resins can be very difficult. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS) and Jennmar Corporation have developed a new cable bolt that can be fully encapsulated during installation or post-installation with polyurethane (PUR). The Fully-Grouted Cable Bolt (FGCB)* is equipped with a special head that allows the injection of PUR up through the cable bolt head and cable strands, completely encapsulating the cable and filling the drill hole. Although the FGCB was initially developed to fully encapsulate the cable for corrosion protection, it was also found that by modifying the cable bolt head and injection pressure, PUR could be injected into cracks and fissures of the strata to stabilize the roof. This paper details the development of this system and three underground applications under different ground conditions.

Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a training module to educate both new, inexperienced miners as well as veterans on important issues related to self-rescue and escape procedures. These include: (1) physical and environmental conditions that can be encountered in a mine after a major explosion, (2) knowledge of emergency meeting locations and escape routes, (3) the importance of using self-rescuers, even in seemingly clear air, to keep the lungs isolated from contaminants, and (4) why miners should not go off to look for others who are missing. In addition, the module may stimulate miners to think about and discuss mine explosions and the devastating effects of such an event.

THE John Fritz Medal was presented to Ambrose Swasey of Cleveland, Ohio, in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, in New York, on April 23. Charles F. Rand, Chairman of the Board of Award, presided and, after speaking very briefly of Mr. Swasey, whose friend he has been for a great many years, ,introduced Gen. William Crozier, formerly Chief of Ordnance, U. S. Army, who spoke most entertainingly of, Mr. Swasey's accomplishments in designing and manufacturing instruments of precision, particularly for the use of artillery in range finding: Dr. William Wallace Campbell, Director of the Lick Observatory, and President of the University of California, described Mr. Swasey's, contribution to astronomical advancement by his notable development of the largest telescopes in this country.

In the interest of safety in underground coal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That doors used to control ventilation (a) Shall be installed in pairs to form air locks, (b) Shall be self-closing, (c) Shall not have latches or other devices for holding them open, (d) Shall be constructed and maintained to prevent excessive air leakage through or around them, (e) Shall be fire resistant. 2. That wherever practicable the use of doors shall be limited to development openings. The Mine Safety Board is of the opinion that the best practice in coal-mine ventilation makes use of a split system employing overcasts or undercasts with doors limited as far as feasible to development openings. The distance between air-lock doors on haulageways should be sufficient to accommodate a trip or train of maximum length. Where auxiliary doors are installed to control ventilation during emergencies, they should be so placed that they can be utilized readily in case of damage to the air-lock doors.

THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 1400°F. (760°C.), the metal becomes non-magnetic, and at the "As point," 1670°F. (910°C.), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 1400 to 1670°F., it is sometimes called beta (0) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 2550°F. (1400°C.), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non-magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in a hydrogen atmosphere) at 2795°F. (1535°C.); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures. (1) For example, in heating through the As point a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 27 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always the case. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no transformation occurs. Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well. Of the metals which are liquid at the melting point of iron only lead, silver, and bismuth refuse to dissolve to an appreciable extent. The non-metals presumably dissolve by virtue of the formation of an iron compound; for example, sulphur is thought to dissolve as the compound FeS.
