The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires that the transverse load capacity of stoppings be equal to or greater than traditionally accepted in mine controls, which for block stoppings is generally accepted as 39 psf as referenced in the preamble to the CFR standard. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where our past research has shown that the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on rigid arch loading of the structure is proposed to determine the true transverse load capacity of block stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate rigid arching of block stoppings was developed and results verified through full-scale in-mine tests. The rigid arch tests have demonstrated transverse load capacities more than an order of magnitude higher than the ASTM E 72 evaluation method from which the 39-psf requirement is derived. More importantly, the rigid arch tests have shown that the load capability is dependent on the physical properties of the block and geometric properties of the wall and not the sealant.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

This paper describing the mining practices at the Ray mines at Ray, Arizona, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, method and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. At the present time (1929) all mineral Production of the Ray district comes from the Ray Mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. The ore body is being worked from two shafts, designated as No. 1 and No. 2. An undercut block-caving method of mining is used, variations of which are employed to fit different conditions. The present method has been developed by making improvements as experience was gained or when conditions changed. Refinements in practice are continually being made. The Ray mine was the first in the Southwest to use a caving system of mining on a large scale.

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

"Kinross’ Fort Knox Gold mine, near Fairbanks, Alaska has successfully implemented two major metallurgical continuous improvement projects resulting in growth of gold production and an extension of mine life. In 2009, Fort Knox produced 263,153 oz of gold at a cash operating cost of $543/oz. In 2010, approximately 63% of the gold will be produced from the CIP circuit, 15% of the gold from the gravity circuit and 22% of the gold from the heap leach.In 2009, a 44,000 ton per day run-of-mine valley fill heap leach facility was constructed and commissioned as a cost effective treatment option for low grade ores to supplement the higher grade mill. The heap leach facility will produce approximately 100,000 ounces of gold per year under severe winter conditions. Heap leach gold recovery, based on test work shows 30% after a 55-day leach cycle, with long term ultimate gold recovery targeted at 65%. The paper presents the heap leach design concepts and production data.Additionally in 2009, installation of a Knelson gravity concentrator unit (XD70) was completed. This together with an Acacia intense leach reactor (AILR) has increased overall mill gold recovery from 79.3% to 80.7%. A manual shaking table gold recovery operation has been replaced by batch intensive cyanidation of the high grade Knelson concentrates. Increased removal of coarse gold and difficult-to-leach gold species from the grinding circuit, via the gravity circuit, has improved gold leach recovery in the conventional whole-ore tank leach CIP circuit. The paper presents plant operating data, showing the improvements over the old flowsheet.Focus on the metallurgical properties of the high grade and low grade end components of the Fort Knox ore has resulted in significant improvement to gold recovery."

Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.' The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a 1/2-ton basic open hearth. A unique circumstance created by monitoring a pre-driven longwall recovery room permitted measuring the stresses of a coal pillar throughout its entire life cycle in less than a week. A fender pillar, created in approximately the middle of a longwall panel at a depth of 650 ft, transformed from a solid barrier pillar - to a yielding pillar - to a residual pillar as 3 ft slices were methodically removed with the longwall shearer. The complete transformation, or life cycle, took place in less than 12 hours. The stresses were quickly transferred from the pillar onto the standing pumpable concrete supports and into the outby pillars. Roof to floor closure measurements, combined with the timing of the pillar behavior, provides a detailed look at the uncontrollable convergence of underground mine openings. Pillars remain the most important form of “primary support” and understanding these life cycles is vital for safe and efficient mine design, in both room and pillar and longwall panel extractions.

An innovative cost-saving design for a 1,100 ft bulkhead on the Tanana River at Nenana in central Alaska won Alaska Construction & Oil magazine's Construction Achievement Award. The designers utilized materials available nearby at low cost. They planned sheet pile enclosures, self-anchored back into shore without cell closures. They made it practical for inexperienced local workers to do the building. And they completed the project on time and below a reduced budget.

This formal literature review identifies strengths and shortcomings of current literature related to mine rescue, self-rescue, and self-escape technology. Key concepts and factors that influence the decision making behind mine rescue and self-escape were identified. Historically, underground mining has been one of the most dangerous occupations due to the harsh nature of working environments. During the latter half of the twentieth century, and into the twenty-first century, mining fatalities have declined, yet large-scale mine emergencies persist. The emergence of new technologies, in combination with evidencebased mine emergency research, is resulting in new training methods, monitoring systems, and self-escape approaches being tried in operating mines. This review identifies areas in which substantial research is being conducted, such as the use of virtual reality and game-based training and areas that warrant further development such as the measurement and information gathering capabilities of unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, as well as emergency management and incident command systems. This paper summarizes the current underground mine rescue and self-escape landscape in the USA, including the breadth and depth of mine rescue and self-escape training and practices as evident in the literature.

Pillars are any structures left between two or more underground openings. The stability of pillars is normally considered to depend on shape (defined by width to height ratio), rock mass strength, extraction ratio, in situ stresses and the gross structural features (i.e. joints, contacts, faults etc). Recent experience has shown that pillar stability is also controlled by the relative orientation of the orebody with respect to the in situ principal stress. In inclined orebodies, pillars are loaded in compression and shear, thus creating unsymmetrical stress distribution. Failure mechanisms of these pillars are little known. This paper investigates the failure mechanisms of pillars under shear loading. Two dimensional elastic numerical modeling was used to examine the behavior of pillars in different orebody inclinations relative to the major farfield stress orientation. First, the paper reviews pillar design approaches including the empirical pillar design chart and uses numerical modeling to investigate the effect of the major farfield stress orientation on pillar stability. It is concluded that the empirical pillar design chart be used with caution, and that for orebodies under shear loading mine planning and design should take this into consideration since such geometrical orebody/stress relations put mine structures at higher risk of instability.

In connection with the approval of coal-cutting machines for service in gaseous mines , the engineers of the Bureau of Mines have been somewhat concerned as to the type of trailing cables that could safely be used on permissible outfits . While no final action has been taken on this question ( tentative approvals having been granted pending investigations ) , the Bureau has been endeavoring to collect data and information on this question which would permit a fair , yet safe , ruling to be made . For this purpose cooperative arrangements were made with three coal companies to visit certain of their mines , making inspections inside the mines to observe the cables and cutting machines in operation . In all , twenty mines were visited . A questionnaire covering the operations of trailing cables was filled out at each of these mines . In a few instances no personal inspection was made , the information being supplied by mine officials after conferences with the Bureau's engineer . At other mines the information given by mine officials was supplemented by personal observation inside the mines , usually at a time when the cutting machines were in operation .

A set of experiments were conducted at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds [1] in which explosive charges were buried in saturated sand beneath a suspended rigid platform. The goal of these experiments was to measure the dependence of the impulse transmitted to the platform on the standoff distance and the charge burial depth. Simulations of these experiments were performed using the BUB2D axi-symmetric code using a frictional-cohesive visco-plastic model to describe the response of the saturated sand. This code solves a constrained set of conservation laws in which the liquid region (in this case saturated sand) is assumed incompressible. The explosion is initialized as a high pressure gas bubble (void) within the fluid. Comparisons of the simulations to the experiments are presented together with a study of the physical phenomenology associated with the loading process. In particular, it is shown that the force imparted to the platform is a combination of the impact of the sand on top of the explosion gas bubble and the pressure of the bubble as it expands before venting into the atmosphere. Under certain conditions, when the platform standoff is sufficiently small and the platform is sufficiently large, the bubble can over-expand before venting and pull the platform downward. This phenomenon was studied further through carefully measured and photographed small-scale experiments performed at the University of Maryland [2]. The small-scale experiments provide additional important validation benchmarks for our model.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan’s geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro-active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.

Names have been changed to illustrate the importance and impact of carbon monoxide risk management in explosive blast projects and the community « Honey I’m not feeling good…” “What is going on Michael?” – – Michael was not answering so Julia, who was on the third level of the magnificent house, hurried down the stairs to check up on him in the basement. Today was day 2 of the construction work of the bathroom, yesterday they had excavated all the space for the shower. She started to breathe heavily as she was approaching the bathroom and saw Michael unconscious on the floor. “Michael!” – Julia immediately dialed 911. She opened a window since the air was heavy and went by Michael to hear him breathe and take his pulse. The paramedics took Michael on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital. “I’m feeling dizzy” she thought to herself a couple of hours after the incident, and heard Matthew say: “Mom, I’m feeling sick”. Suddenly, she felt like she would pass out and felt in danger but couldn’t move. She desperately searched for her cellphone and dialed 911 but couldn’t speak. The dispatcher sent the firefighters and paramedics to the GPS location that was appearing on the screen and the emergency team was alerted that it was a second call in hours at the same address. When the firefighters arrived, they had to force the door to enter and found Julia in her bedroom on the third floor and Anette and Matthew also unconscious in their bedroom, lying on their respective bed. There was no smoke but on their multigas meter, carbon monoxide (CO) peaked at 1500 ppm on every level of the house, which is abnormally high.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

August 15th, 1871. THE Institute assembled in Packer Hall of the Lehigh University, the President, Mr. David Thomas, of Catasauqua in the chair. Professor Henry Coppée, President of the Lehigh University, made an address of welcome to the Institute, and placed at its disposal a convenient hall for purposes of meeting. Mr. Thomas tendered his resignation as President of the Institute, as advancing years prevented him from actively participating in its meetings. The Institute declined to accept the resignation, and, on the assurance that active duties would not be expected of him, Mr. Thomas was induced to withdraw it. Invitations were received from Mr. B. C. Webster, President of the Lehigh Zinc Company, to visit the mines and works of the company; from Mr. Charles Brodhead, to visit the Chapman Slate Quarries ; and from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, to visit their works at Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk and the Nesquehoning Tunnel. The Council reported the names of persons already elected in the two classes of members and associates. The following resolutions were passed: Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall take into consideration the printing and publishing of papers originating with the Institute, and that a uniform system as regards size and execution be adopted. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs. R. W. Raymond, E. B. Coxe, and the Secretary. Resolved, That the Council design and prepare a seal for the Institute at the earliest practicable time.
