The Statnamic loading test is a new and innovative method for testing deep foundations. The test is relatively inexpensive, quick, easily mobilized, provides for direct measurement of applied load and corresponding displacement, and is capable of very high loading capacities. The long duration of the applied loading, as compared to a dynamic loading test, allows for a straightforward determination of the static behaviour of the foundation tested. A new method of analysis of the Statnamic loading test, the Equilibrium Point Method, is presented. A description is given of the pile-soil model and a demonstration of how the static load-displacement behaviour of deep foundations may be predicted from the Statnamic loading test data. The Equilibrium Point Method of analysis is applied to three types of deep foundations in soils which respond differently to fast loading rates. These case histories, from Canada and the United States, include data from static loading tests for direct comparison, and demonstrate the ability of the Equilibrium Point Method to predict static behaviour of the deep foundations.

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. Os processos de redução direta utilizam-se de gases redutores (CO e H2) para redução do ferro e produção do DRI. A geração deste gás se dá através de reforma de metano que pode ser feita em um reformador, ou dentro do reator de redução com o DRI como catalizador. O último caso ocorre nos processos auto reformadores. A cinética da reforma de metano com H2O catalisada por DRI foi estudada em temperaturas entre 875°C e 1050°C. Os resultados mostraram que até conversão de metano de 0,50, a reforma é controlada por reação química catalítica conforme mecanismo proposto por Münster e Grabke(3,4). Acima desta conversão, o mecanismo não foi determinado. O uso de gás com potencial abaixo do limite para carburação (CH4/H2O < 1) resultou em DRI sem carbono. Com gás de potencial igual ou acima do limite, a carburação do DRI ocorreu e no caso do gás similar ao do processo industrial a carburação impediu a reação catalítica de reforma.

Three-dimensional time-lapse velocity tomograms were generated to image stress redistribution around a longwall panel to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to ground failure. Mining-induced microseismic events provided passive sources for the three-dimensional velocity tomography. Surface-mounted geophones monitored microseismic activity for 18 days. Most similar studies have utilized active sources including longwall shearers, controlled explosions, and hammer blows. These active sources generally require a person to initiate and measure the location and time of the source, and are not conducive to continuous monitoring. This method utilizes mining induced microseismic events as passive sources and lends itself well to continuous monitoring. Two event location methods were compared in order to move toward quantification of tomographic results in terms of ground conditions. Additionally, LAMODEL was utilized to determine the expected stress distribution around the longwall panel and compare these images to the velocity tomograms. Eighteen tomograms were generated, one per day, and high velocity regions in the set of tomograms generated from the initial location algorithm correlated with abutment stress redistribution predicted by numerical modeling. This research is significant as it has the potential to improve safety in underground mines and is the only example of long term passive velocity tomography implementation for the purpose of inferring stress redistribution around an area of active mining. Though still immature, this technology has the potential to allow mine personnel to image areas of active mining on a regular basis and detect areas with anomalous velocity distributions indicating potential safety hazards.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

A pilot plant paste thickening campaign was conducted at the Anglo Platinum Limited Mogalakwena South Concentrator plant in South Africa in order to determine the water saving capability of P&TT technology. In the process a simple water consumption model was developed for estimating the overall water consumption of the mine. The model indicates that for the Mogalakwena tailings, significant water savings are achieved by discharging thickened tailing directly to the TSF but only at densities where free water release at the TSF is close to zero. A hard lump char containing only 4 to 5 per cent ash, 0·25-0·30 per cent sulphur and a trace of phosphorus has been produced from Latrobe Valley brown coal by slow drying and carbonization of ordinary industrial briquettes at temperatures between 7000 C and 14000 C. The briquette char can be made with a variety of reactivities by varying the maximum temperature of carbonization; the higher the temperature, the lower the reactivity. The strength of the fuel compares favourably with metallurgical coke made from black coal, though it may not be quite so resistant to abrasion. Experiments in a small experimental cupola indicate that it will make a satisfactory fuel for use in iron foundries. It may also find extensive application as a smokeless fuel in other branches of industry and in household heating appliances.INTRODUCTIONVictoria, like South Australia and Western Australia, is apparently without 'significant deposits of black coal of coking quality but there are huge reserves of brown coal of high moisture content (60-66 per cent) in the Latrobe Valley (well over 20,000 million tons have been proved) and there are other important deposits in the south central portion of the State (Herman, 1952).For three decades Victorian industries, including a few metallurgical firms, have been using the briquettes made at the Yallourn factory of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (S.E.C.). These briquettes, having a moisture content of about 15 per cent and a calorific value of approximately 9,500 B.T.U. per pound, are satisfactory for certain grate-type furnaces but they are not suitable for use in cupolas of other shaft furnaces because they disintegrate badly on rapid heating.

Despite the abundance of solid mineral deposits, Nigeria only earns about 0.5-1% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the solid minerals sector. This is as a result of the dominance of the oil and gas industry, which has negatively affected the competitiveness of other sectors of Nigeria’s economy. The dominance of this industry has resulted in unemployment, poverty, hunger, domestic price inflation, corruption, unstable government, and higher exchange rates. These impacts are typical for economies suffering from the effects of "Dutch Disease" and the "Resource Curse". Community-based small-scale mining offers hope as an economic activity that can create wealth, employment, reduce hunger and poverty, and provide basic amenities for rural communities with solid minerals endowment. This study presents preliminary results of ongoing research into the prospects of using community-based small-scale mining in a developing country like Nigeria to move towards rural sustainable development.

"INTRODUCTION The need for an accurate and precise analytical method for determining moisture in coals of high water content has been recognized by the coal industry as well as the fuel technologist. Interest in this particular phase of coal technology extends back to the early work of German investigators on the brown coals of Central Europe. Studies by these workers led to the establishment of a direct immiscible liquid-distillation method 4/ as the accepted moisture determining technique in European laboratories. Direct moisture determining methods, those methods that utilize various techniques to drive off the water from a given sample of coal and either collect the water in a calibrated receiver or selectively trap the water driven off in a suitable absorber, have found little favor in the United States. They have been treated merely as research tools.5/ The problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals of the United States has not been given much consideration because such coals contribute only about 2 percent of the total United States production. With renewed activity in low-temperature carbonization and with the growth of interest in coal and coal-tar hydrogenation, the American coals of lover rank containing 20 to 40 percent bed moisture will be subjected to extensive investigation. If the low-rank coals of the United States are to be accurately appraised, the need for qualitative and quantitative analytical proceeded becomes more pronounced. These coals, especially the lignites of Texas and North Dakota, are highly susceptible to oxidation, a process that proceeds to a greater or less extort when low-rank, high-moisture coals are treated by oven-drying methods. The extent of this atmospheric oxidation has been described and evaluated by numerous workers. 7/In many respects, the problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals, those found in the United States and the high-moisture coals of Central Europe, is similar. Conversely, the problem of moisture determination assumes a different aspect when the coals of the eastern and the middle-west sections of the United States are considered. Present methods, the loss in weight gravimetic-type procedures, serve adequately to test these low-moisture coals. The determination of moisture in coals containing 20 to 40 percent water should be approached from a direct method rather than from an indirect gravimetic-type procedure because of the oxidative tendencies of these coals and the demonstratrated inability of a loss-in-weight technique to remove all the water in a given sample of coal."

"These tentative coal mine inspection standards have been prepared as a guide for the Federal inspection of coal mines of the United States. Much time and thought have been spent by various members of the Safety Division in the preparation of thses standards, and it is believed that compliance with them eventually will be possible in most mines. In many instances objections will be raised to them owing to long-established mining customs and practices that are inherently of dubious safety and to a natural inclination to oppose change. In other instances there will be valid objections due to conditions not foreseen at the time these standards were prepared. Or there may be substandard conditions and practices due to original mine layouts that it is not practicable to change during the lifetime of the mine; in such instances it is likely that some effective measures are or can be taken toward lessening hazards.With the rapid change in mining methods some of the standards may become inapplicable and it may be advisable to revise them to meet the new conditions. Therefore, questions regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the supervising engineer of the Coal Mine Inspection Division so that modifications of and additions to these standards may be made from time to time.In many respects these standards exceed the provisions of the various State mining laws, and some may conflict with the laws of some States. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws but to suggest that it may be desirable for the State to reconsider such laws or safety orders.Although an effort has been made to word these standards so that they may be readily understood, nevertheless, a reasonable interpretation should be placed upon them. In fact, in numerous instances the words reasonable"", ""suitable"", and ""properly"" are used in recognition of the fact that reason- and sound judgment enter into the carrying out of the safety endeavor.The policy of the Bureau on some vitally important safety matters in mines is set forth in its published Safety Decisions. "ABSTRACT The geology of Sweden is characterized by the most recent glacial period with deposition of very soft clays and loose sand. Due to these difficult geotechnical conditions, new, innovative foundation and ground improvement methods were developed, which today are used in many other countries. Over centuries, Swedish scientists and engineers have made important contributions to the developments in foundation engineering. An important aspect of the success of Swedish foundation engineering in practice is the spirit of close cooperation between practitioners, engineers, and scientists. This has been achieved by the establishing of commissions, with the aim of finding solution of geotechnical problems. The paper focuses on developments in foundation engineering during the last century and does cover present activities in Sweden.IntroductionSoil mechanics and geotechnical engineering play an important role in Swedish society, as most construction activities require the consideration of foundation conditions. The objective of the paper is to summarize important developments in foundation engineering, primarily during the past century, which have influenced geotechnical engineering also in other countries. These achievements are the result of contributions by scientists, engineers and practitioners, only a few of which can be named. The paper does not claim to cover all aspects of geotechnical engineering, as emphasis is on the solution of foundation engineering problems from an international perspective. Thus, ongoing or recent research and development projects and activities within the geotechnical community are not included, as this would exceed the scope of the paper.Over the centuries, Swedish scientists and engineers contributed to the development of civil and foundation engineering. One important reason is the geology of Sweden, which is characterized by the most recent glacial period, resulting in the deposition of soft clays and loose sands in the coastal areas and dense glacial till in the interior of the country. Geotechnical engineering in Sweden has a long tradition and early contributions by several Swedish engineers and scientists have had a profound influence on the current foundation design in and beyond Sweden. A description of early Swedish geotechnical engineering has been presented in several publications by Flodin and Broms (1981), Broms and Flodin (1988), Massarsch and Fellenius (2012). The historic development of Swedish geotechnical and foundation engineering can be divided into four periods. During the “Early Era”, engineers were active in different sectors of military, civil, and mining engineering. Next, the “Industrial Era” comprised developments during the industrial revolution, when the transportation infrastructure of the country was modernized and extended. During the third period, possibly the “Golden era” of Swedish geotechnical engineering, which started at the end of the 19th century and lasted the following fifty years, geologists, engineers and scientists helped to establish modern geotechnical engineering. But also during the recent past, the “Modern Era”, several important contributions to geotechnical and foundation engineering which originated in Sweden, are used in many countries today."

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of online analyzers (ISO/DIS15239).

Numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) were carried out to investigate the flow patterns and stress field redistribution at the hopper and feeder interface. The influences of different filling heights, belt speeds and clearances between the hopper bottom and feeder surface on feeder loads were studied. Meanwhile, experiments were conducted by utilising wedged plane-flow hoppers with different configurations and horizontal feeders with various clearances. The simulation results were compared with theoretical values and experimental measurements. In terms of the cases presented in this study, simulation results reveal good agreements with experimental observations regarding the flow pattern. Being similar to the theoretical values, the simulations provide close predictions on vertical feeder loads for steady flow states, but they may show significant overestimations for initial states. Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler?s performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of ~43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world?s first FW/BENSON? vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 × 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

Most mining operations have been happy to live in blissful ignorance of what their equipment is really capable of. Shareholders have been shown increasing tonnes output per employee (due to rationalising employee numbers). It is now known that the best practice for large mining trucks is 52 per cent higher than average or best practice for excavators is 41 per cent higher than average, or 38 per cent in shovels or 35 per cent with draglines, etc. The data is available. The bell curve of performance is flat. Substantial underperformance is rife. If you are working in or supplying equipment or services to one of the majority of operating mines that donÆt achieve best practice surely you want to know why. Or maybe you donÆt? For many mining people this sort of knowledge could be dangerous to their career so keeping the MD or CEO in the dark is a good option. Many suppliers donÆt want the performance of their equipment benchmarked? Mining consultants donÆt have the data so they are happy to keep guessing. Unfortunately, many Business Improvement or Business Excellence projects are about ticking the participantÆs æcareer boxesÆ. The first step to capacity utilisation is knowing what the capacity is. Even then people and culture will get in the way. People are the biggest hurdle to capacity utilisation. This paper will discuss what the mine of the future (and today) will need to do to utilise the productive capacity of its assets. It is not just benchmarking. It is not just automation. It is not just technology. It is about engaging those people who impact on equipment performance; right from the operator up to the Mine Manager. Doing it better involves a process to facilitate change and a culture which says it is OK to try even if you are wrong.

Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

Both climate and methane control have been a prime concern in the development of the workings within the Deep Soft seam at Harworth Colliery. This paper describes the numerous methods employed over the past 15 years to effect control over these two major environmental pollutants at Harworth and describes a future method of working which will enable the output levels required to be achieved, whilst effecting the required level of both climatic and methane control. Firstly, the paper gives a broad historical overview of the steps taken since 1981, when production started in the Deep Soft seam at Harworth Colliery, to effect control over the main environmental pollutants in the seam. Secondly, the paper details the results of planning exercises undertaken to assess the various options with respect to panel layout, to achieve environmental control in future production districts. Finally, the recommended method of panel design to achieve the levels of production required is detailed.
