The ongoing Overpeck Valley Parallel Sewer Project of Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA), New Jersey, is a US $65 million CSO improvement program to meet a State DEP consent order by 2010. One major program component includes a total of 1.8 km (1.2 mile) long, 1,800 mm (72 in) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) installed by a Herrenknecht AVND1800AB MTBM. The alignment includes drives through 850 m (2,788 ft) of extremely soft glaciolacustrine varved clay, 980 m (3,214 ft) of loose to medium dense mixed soils containing silty sands, gravels, and boulders, and crosses under the New Jersey Turnpike, US Highway Route 46, and a CSX Railroad Intermodal Yard and a branch mainline. Two types of MTBM cutterheads are being used, one configured for the weak varved clay, and one for the mixed soil conditions. The MTBM is also equipped with a double-steering system consisting of a standard front steering joint and a second trailing steering joint to assist grade control should adequate steering not be achieved by the front primary steering in extremely weak soil conditions. This paper discusses the significant engineering aspects and challenges related to site settings, ground characterization, key MTBM features and performance, and required ground treatment.

Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute, at Spokane, have been sent to members in the Special Circular of May 8, 1909, and for convenience a summary of the additional information is given later in this announcement. In spite of the present small number who have joined the party, final arrangements have been made to complete the itinerary given in the circular. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the special courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. . For those who cannot take the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving the Yellowstone Park. In order to make the necessary arrangements, however, the names of members and guests contemplating this partial trip should be sent at once to Mr. Theodore Dwight, .39 West 39th St., New York, N. Y. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago September 16. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals (luring the entire trip, except while taking the tour through the Yellowstone Park. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. The flow field and coal combustion process in a pilot-scale iron ore pelletizing kiln is simulated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The objective of the work is to investigate how the thermal effects from the flame affect the flow field. As expected, the combustion process with the resulting temperature rise and volume expansion leads to an increase of the velocity in the kiln. Apart from that, the overall flow field looks similar regardless of whether combustion is present or not. The flow field though affects the combustion process by controlling the mixing rates of fuel and air, governing the flame propagation. This shows the importance of correctly predicting the flow field in this type of kiln, with a large amount of process gas circulating, in order to optimize the combustion process. The results also justify the use of down-scaled, geometrically similar, water models to investigate kiln aerodynamics in general and mixing properties in particular. Even if the heat release from the flame is neglected, valuable conclusions regarding the flow field can still be drawn.

At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the United States. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before fi ring to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150 kt (165,000 st) of barite in 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, to add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks and to add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around X-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses accounts for an estimated 78 kt/a (86,000 stpy) in the United States.

The flow-stress recovery of high-purity aluminurn following a 10 pct tensile prestrain was studied in terms of a fractional flow-stress recovery parameter fr. The flow-stress recovery behavior was related to the dislocation arrangements using transmissiort electron rnicvoscopy. During recovery at 120° and 160°C, nearly stable strength levels were attained, the strength level for 120°C recovery being greater than that for 160°C. This stabilization of flow stress was related to the formation of meta-stable dislocation networks bounding nearly perfect cells. Both network formation and the annealing of dislocation loops were found to be recovery mechanisms, and the stronger metastable strength level joy 120°C recovery was related to a smaller average cell size. Analysis of the networks was consistent with the reaction of sets of dislocations with a/2 (110) Burgers vector to give product Burgers DURING isothermal annealing of cold-worked metals, a degree of softening occurs without re-crystallization, and the processes responsible for this change are termed recovery processes. During recovery annealing, the dislocations generated during cold work become rearranged into low-energy configurations, and as much as 50 pct of the stored energy is released."' The relationship between this rearrangement of dislocations and mechanical behavior is of considerable importance, since the dislocation substructures formed during recovery provide a significant degree of low-temperature strength3j4 and can favorably alter the course of primary creep at high temperatures.4 The purpose of the present study was to relate the flow-stress recovery behavior of high-purity aluminum to the substructural modifications that occur. Electron transmission microscopy was therefore employed for direct observation of dislocation substructures at various stages of recovery following 10 pct prestrain. Several investigators5-' have proposed that dislocations can become rearranged or lost during the preparation of thin foils. It was found early in the present study that the dislocation structures in the thicker regions of the foils changed in a systematic way during the course of recovery. Therefore, it is unlikely that substantial losses or rearrangements occurred during thinning. This point will be discussed in more detail later. The results of various investigators indicate that recovery processes in fcc metals can result in release of 50 pct or more of the total energy stored in the as-prestrained metal, this percentage decreasing with increasing prestrain.' Alloying elements or impurities tend to increase this percentage. The release of stored energy of fcc metals during recovery appears to occur by 1) annealing of point defects if the deformation occurred at sufficiently low temperaturesg and 2) rearrangement of dislocations into low-energy Configurations.1,2In bcc metals, the annealing of dislocation loops has also been observed during recovery after prestrain,10-12 and it has been proposed that this is a recovery mechanism for unidirectionally strained fcc metals.' The density of dislocations in bcc metals has not been observed to decrease appreciably during recovery,10 although the formation of regular dislocation networks has been observed. has shown that the formation of such networks can result in elimination of long-range stresses and can lead to significant release of stored energy without dislocation annihilation. It might thus be expected that network formation is a significant recovery mechanism in fcc metals, although extensive network formation has apparently not been reported in controlled recovery experiments. The formation of sub-boundaries in aluminum has been observed by various investigators13'17 during recovery studies of aluminum, but the structure of these boundaries was not resolved. In this regard, it is significant to note that Bailey and Hirsch,' using transmission electron microscopy, detected no network or sub-boundary formation during recovery of 99.99 pct Ag. Furthermore, Clarebrough et al.2 found no such rearrangements during recovery of copper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The high-purity aluminum used in this investigation was obtained in the form of 0.125-in.-thick sheet. Spectrographic analysis revealed that the sheet was 99.995 pct A1 with the following weight-percent impurities: 0.001 Cu, 0.002 Fe, 0.001 Si, and 0.0004 Mg. The as-received sheet was in the heavily cold-rolled condition. DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

THIS IS a progress report on a study of the application of statistical practice to mine and mineral sampling undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide sound theoretical and practical data for use of the mineral engineering professions. One of the problems in mine sampling is determining the reliability of the results. For certain types of sampling data (random data) the reliability of the results can be stated mathematically. For other types of data there is no known means of quantitatively expressing reliability. In applying measures of reliability to a set of random data, some knowledge or assumption of the characteristics of the particular data is necessary. In many fields these characteristics are well known. However, in mining, where the data are in assays, these characteristics are not well known.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 13,374 acres of the 14,994-acre Ireteba Peaks Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-438) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark County, NV, about 4 miles south of Nelson, NV. No identified resources were found within the Ireteba Peaks study area, although there are identified subeconomic resources just outside of the study area boundary. Most of the area is underlain by Tertiary granitic rocks, which apparently postdate mineralization. The area is virtually surrounded by mining districts with mines developed in older rock units. On the north side, quartz monzonite, volcanic tuff, and tuffaceous sediments in the Eldorado mining district host deposits of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and mercury. On the south side, Precambrian gneiss, intrusive andesite porphyry, and hornfels in contact with Quartz monzonite in the Searchlight mining district host gold, silver, copper, and lead deposits. The Newberry mining district to the southeast had copper, gold, and silver mineralization in Precambrian gneiss and andesite.

No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

This paper presents the results of a unique study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from 2016 to 2019 to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on shale gas well casing integrity and underground miner safety and health. At both deep and shallow cover instrumentation sites, surface subsidence measurements, subsurface in-place inclinometer measurements, and underground pillar pressure measurements were conducted as longwall panels were mined. Comparisons of the deep and shallow cover test site results with those from a similar study under medium cover reveal an interesting longwall-induced response scenario. Under shallow and medium covers, measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are one order of magnitude higher than those measured under deep cover. Conversely, measured vertical compressions under deep cover are one order of magnitude higher than those under shallow and medium covers. However, FLAC3D simulations of the casings indicate that, in all three cases, the P-110 production casings remain intact under longwall-induced deformations and compressions, which has serious implications for future mine design in areas where shale gas wells have been drilled ahead of mining.

Fibrous minerals are common in nature but asbestiform minerals are rare. The unique mineralogical characteristic common to all the asbestos minerals is their morphologic form (or habit of crystallization) as polyfilamentous fiber bundles. The individual fibrils within the bundles have a tendency to be very long with a narrow range of diameters and grow with their long fiber axis in parallel orientation to the bundle length. The asbestiform habit imparts to the asbestos minerals sufficient flexibility and tensile strength so that most can be woven into cloth. In the past application has focused on their ability to insulate against the transfer of heat. Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.
