This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

Detailed fragmentation data for different blast delay timing tests at the Red Dog mine in Alaska are analyzed. This work is a continuation of previous work in which the crusher output was found to be better described by the three-parameter Swebrec function than by the Rosin-Rammler function. For a crusher model, the x50 variable sufficed to describe changing crusher input while b and xmax could be considered fixed. For the crusher output from aggregated stockpile rock, as measured by digital image analysis using Split-Online, the constancy of b was not as apparent. In this paper detailed stockpile data, single Split data series, and sieved belt cuts of crusher product are analyzed using the Swebrec and truncated Rosin-Rammler functions. The variability of b is confirmed. By using specific fraction passing sizes a shortcut is presented that removes the need to do curve fitting to determine the three Swebrec function parameters.

Best practice for the submission of samples to an internal or commercial laboratory requires quality control materials to be included for the purpose of independently and comprehensively assessing laboratory performance. These quality controls include the use of certified reference materials (CRMs) and may be blind to the laboratory. Iron ore companies purchase these materials from reputable manufacturers from stock of run-of-mine materials at the appropriate grades. The international standard, ISO 17034 (ISO, 2016), specifies the competency requirements for organisations manufacturing reference materials, and includes rigorous requirements for the assessment of homogeneity, stability and establishment of property values and their uncertainties. Homogeneity is one of the most important measures of suitability for all certified reference materials and refers to the degree to which the composition and properties of a sample are uniform throughout the batch, relative to the analytical precision of the method. More specifically, homogeneity studies of candidate reference materials should be assessed for both within sample variance and between sample variance with appropriate statistical controls. The design and application of homogeneity studies are discussed as they apply to both crushed and pulverised reference materials. Crushed certified reference materials have been utilised by the iron ore industry for a number of years and provide the user with a critical assessment of variances in sample preparation in addition to analysis. Crushed reference materials are similar in presentation to an RC sample and are generally used as discrete parcels of material submitted to the laboratory from the field. Pulverise certified reference materials miss the sample preparation step and are subsampled from th delivered sachet at the point of analysis. This paper compares the relative homogeneity performance of crushed and pulverised certified reference materials by grade across key iron ore chemical constituents. Outcomes are benchmarked to the international standard ISO 9516 (ISO, 2003) for the determination of various elements in iron ores by lithium borate fusion and X-ray fluorescence. Practical implications are discussed with reference to a case study from an iron ore laboratory in the Pilbara.

Conventional spirals are capable of providing excellent clean coal recovery, although at a relatively high ash content. Compound spirals, which provide two stages of spiral cleaning in a single taller unit, have been commercialized in recent years to improve upon the cleaning performance obtained from conventional spirals. The present study aimed at optimizing the performance obtained from a compound spiral for cleaning especially high sulfur fine and ultrafine coal. Industrial-scale spiral units were utilized for this study in a pilot-scale facility at the Illinois Coal Development Park. A statistically designed experimental program was conducted to optimize ash and sulfur cleaning performance of the compound spiral. It was found that significant cleaning of ultrafine coal (i.e., 150 microns × 45 microns and even 45 microns × 25 microns size coal) is achievable with the compound spiral. However, operating conditions for cleaning finer coal fractions (-150 microns size coal) have to be significantly different from those used to clean coarser coal fractions (+150 microns size coal). The sulfur rejection trends were different from ash separation efficiency trends in all size fractions except 45 microns × 25 microns. The probable error (Ep) and effective specific gravity of separation (SG50c) determined for the compound spiral cleaning of the overall particle size were as low as 0.07 and 1.62, respectively. However, the bypass of a small percentage of clean coal to the tailings stream of the compound spiral, may need further adjustment of the key process parameters.

THERE has been a recent revival of interest in the intermetallic compound AgMg as an experimental material for study of the physical and chemical properties of simple ordered structures. Studies of mechanical behaviors,1-4 diffusion,5,6 and thermo-dynamic properties7'8 have been reported. In several of these studies, heat treatments have been carried out in argon-filled silica capsules at temperatures as high as 750°C with no apparent adverse effects. The present authors were, therefore, startled to discover in the course of some yet unpublished work, that gross melting of near-stoichio-metric AgMg compositions occurred in such samples more than 100 deg below their melting point of about 800°C. This note is to report a brief series of experiments carried out to establish the reason for this behavior. Gross errors in sample composition and failure of furnace temperature controls were quickly eliminated as causes of melting. The first tangible lead came from chemical analysis of an AgMg sample which had melted during treatment at 750°C. A silicon content of 3.3 wt pct was found. Since satisfactory analyses had been obtained on the original as-cast ingot, contamination by diffusion and/or reaction with the fused silica capsule seemed a distinct possibility. A perplexing fact, however, was the apparently capricious incidence of the effect. Not only was it previously unknown, even in the experience of the present authors; but, in the early part of the present study, melting sometimes occurred and sometimes not with specimens treated under constant conditions. Indeed, one sample successfully survived a 750°C heat treatment and yet melted completely during the course of a subsequent anneal in an identical capsule at a lower temperature. To obtain evidence that silicon contamination could lower the melting point to the extent observed, the following experiment was performed. A series of ternary alloys was made up with a stoichiometric AgMg base and containing 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 1, 2, and 4 wt pct Si. Melting was done in MgO crucibles under a cover of argon gas. After holding 10 to 20 min in the temperature range 850° to 900°C, the alloys were allowed to solidify in the crucible and the temperature during cooling automatically recorded with a Pt/Pt-10 Rh thermocouple. Results from the cooling curves are shown in Fig. 1. Checks within 2 to 5C° were obtained upon repeated melting, cooling, and freezing. The whole series of cooling curves as well as metallographic examination of the melted alloys established that the AgMg rich portion of the AgMg-Si quasibinary is an eutectic-type system. The melting point of AgMg is lowered from approximately 820°C in the pure stoichiometric binary9 to about 710°C in the saturated intermetallic phase. Since second phase was observed in all samples on cooling to room temperature, the solid solubility of AgMg for silicon evidently falls rapidly with decreasing temperature as indicated schematically by the dashed solvus in Fig. 1. Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.

The subject of capital and the Canadian mining industry is so broad as to be impossible of comprehensive treatment in brief form. The purpose of the present paper therefore will be only to outline in a meagre and somewhat sketchy way the nature and extent of the mineral industry in Canada and to point out those features which are likely to be of general public interest. Canada's mineral industry has a long and creditable production record. The? value of the output per capita rose from $2.23 in 1886 to a maximum of $26.40 in 1920 and the value of the products from ten million dollars in the former year to almost two hundred and twenty-eight million dollars in 1920. Compared with other primary industries and on the basis of the value of production, mining held third place in Canada in 1920, the premier position going to agriculture and the value of forestry production placing that industry second in the list. In the mineral industry, between six and seven thousand properties are operated annually giving employment to up- wards of sixty thousand employees to whom about seventy-five million dollars is paid in salaries and wages. During 1923, seventeen mineral products reached a production value of one million dollars or over in Canada and in order of the values assigned these were: coal, gold, nickel, cement, cop-per, silver, clay products, lead, asbestos, natural gas, stone, zinc, lime, cobalt, sand and gravel, gypsum and salt.

There are two major gold recovery methods: the hydrometallurgical technique, which employs cyanide solutions, and amalgamation method, which involves mercury (Hg). These methods present considerable health, safety, and environmental concerns. Past applications of alpha-cyclodextrin (α-CD) on gold scraps show that α-CD is not only inexpensive, but is also environmentally friendly. This research work used α-CD to recover gold from gold ores instead of gold scraps. The gold ore was sourced from Shanono gold deposit site Kano State,Nigeria. The gold ore was characterized by fire assay (FA) for the precious metal. The concentrate was digested with aqua regia (AR) for 24 h. Modified AR, where hydrochloric acid was replaced with hydrobromic acid, was used for the gold digestion due to the good match in molecular recognition between gold bromide ion (AuBr)− and α- CD in a second sphere coordination complex. The digestate was characterized using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Gold recovery using this technique is pH sensitive, and five pH values (2.0, 3.6, 4.0, 5.4, and 6.0) were investigated. FA analysis showed the Shanono gold ore deposit contains an average of 4.71 ppm of gold, AAS analysis showed highest gold recovery of 69% at pH 4.0, which is lower than recoveries from the metal scraps. This could be due to the presence of other gangue minerals closely associated with the ore. However, gold recovery using α-CD on Shanono gold ore has shown to have a higher yield of 69% compared to 35.5% yield obtainable by Artisan Small Scale Miners using mercury.

The mining industry of the United States has for many years possessed the dubious aistinction of having the poorest accident rate of all of the major lines of industrial endeavor in this country, and until recently there ras little or nothing to show that any material improvement might be expected. However, there are now numerous trends indicating that the corner has ceen turned at last, and it is strongly hoped that the mining industry is likely to follow the railroads, the cement and other industries in operating with occurrence of only a reasonable amount of loss of life and limb through accidents. The complete accident figures for metal and nonmetallic mineral mining for 1931 are not yet available, but fragmentary data shor that 1831 vill un- questionably have very low accident rates, probably the lowest in the history of our metal mines. One underground metal mine has produced over 14,000,000 tons of copper ore rithout a fatality; another metal mining company with an electric slovel operation has handled upwards of 75,000,000 tons of material, copper ore and waste, without the occurrence of a fatality; an iron-ore compan, which orns six mines (three underground, three open pit), has operated every one for a year or more without a lost-time accident with a con- siderable number of employees and a large production; and alot.er iron-ore producer with 30 mines and about 3,000 employees as an average of nearly 10 months of operation in 1931 without a lost-time accident. umerous other wonderful safety records of metal mines in 1931 indicate unmistaimbly tat the record of the noncoal mining industry of the United States as a role in 1931 will undoubtedly be found to be excellent. As part of a program to investigate technology for the extraction of studied HNO3 alumina from abundant domestic ores , the Bureau of Mines leaching of calcined Georgia kaolinitic clay . In this investigation , iron impurities were removed from the aluminum nitrate pregnant leach liquor by solvent extraction , and the purified liquor was evaporated to prepare a suitably concentrated crystallizer feed liquor . Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate was crystallized from the liquor to separate the aluminum from undesirable trace elements and excess water . Continuous crystallization at 40 ° C in a pilot plant vacuum evaporative unit was performed for 5 days to observe the effects of impurity buildup under minimum bleed- stream conditions . Liquor feed rate was 26 lb/h and AAll (( NNOO33 )) 33..99HH22O0 ((AANNNN)) crystal production rate was 17 lb/h . Fe 203 and Cr203 were not effectively separated from the crystals , and P205 , MgO , and K20 impurities must be removed by recrystallization . Other impurities did not excessively contaminate the crystals . Washing the crystals with water or aqueous HNO3 gave an equivalent increase in crystal purity levels by displacing mother liquor . Theoretical equations , applicable to any continuous evaporative crystallization of developed to produce material balances for engineering ANN , were applications .

The overall purpose of this research was to improve the understanding of how the post disaster seismic location system works, what determines the signal size, what is the character of the seismic noise, how well the system can detect blows from a trapped miner, and how well the source of the blows can be located. Based on an improved understanding of the system, improvements were suggested in the seismic subarray configuration, and in the system deployment procedures. An important part of this research was to become familiar with the seismic system operation and to work with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and MSHA personnel to modify and improve the system. To accomplish this we participated in the planning, execution, and data analysis for a number of seismic field tests. Several in-mine field tests were conducted. From these tests the capabilities of an in-mine seismic system were analyzed and specifications were made for designing an operational in-mine system. Several portions of the work done on this grant were covered in previous reports. In particular the capabilities or the presently operational surface based seismic location system has been thoroughly documented by Durkin and Greenfield (1981). Portions of the location procedures and effects of mine openings on seismic signals have also previously been published. These portions or the work will only be summarized in this final report.

Confidence in the strength of the U.S. economic recovery was considerably enhanced by third quarter 1983 profits, which showed a 12.8-percent increase over those in the second quarter (table I). Although the increases were not as great as between the first and second quarter of 1983, profits have grown each quarter since fourth quarter 1982. Both total profits and profits per unit of output increased, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributes to decreases in labor and nonlabor costs (per unit of output), as well as to moderate price increases. [ ] A number of durable goods sectors, however, continue to show profit declines, especially electrical and non-electrical machinery. Profits in the primary metal industry are still negative, but the economic picture of this industry is improving. Between the second and third quarters of 1983, capacity utilization increased somewhat in primary metal manufacturing and stone and earth mineral mining but did not change at all in metal mining. Capacity utilization in metal materials increased from 47.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 1982 to 64.2 percent in the third quarter of 1983 (table 2).

Particle size distribution (PSD) is an essential parameter in assessing the overall efficiency of blasting operations in mines and the subsequent mine-to-mill process in the mining industry. Despite some drawbacks of 2D image analysis techniques in accurately estimating particle sizes in PSD, the mining industry has relied on them for the last three decades. This study proposes the 3D rock fragmentation measurement (3DFM) technique for deducting the accurate dimensions of 3D rock particles for the PSD. 3DFM has utilized different processing algorithms. Images of different views of the non-touching rock particles of varying sizes have been acquired as a data acquisition step of structure from motion technology for generating sparse point cloud. Dense point cloud reconstruction is used to avail finer details of the point cloud using clustering views for the multi-view stereo algorithm. Random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm coupled with an unsupervised classification using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) classifier is employed to extract the rock clusters from the 3D point cloud. Finally, the accurate rock sizes are derived using the hybrid bounding box rotation identification (HYBBRID) algorithm with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.10 cm for length, 0.10 cm for breadth, and 0.32 cm for depth. The PSD of rock fragments obtained from the proposed 3DFM technique is found to be matching with the results of mechanical sieving and manual gauging with an R2 values of 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. The 3DFM method can be considered cheaper, more accurate, and computationally faster in determining the rock dimensions for the PSD determination method to enhance the productivity of the mining industry.

The administration came on as a strong supporter of the mining industry in April of 1982 when President Reagan delivered his long-awaited minerals policy statement. He promised to reduce America's minerals vulnerability, and called for spending billions on meeting stockpile goals for strategic minerals, opening up federal lands for mineral exploration, elimination of barriers to deep sea mining, and regulatory relief. He defended the favorable tax incentives in the Economic Recovery Act as a stimulus to private research and development that would ensure the availability of materials essential to the nation's economy and national defense. But the administration just didn't seem to get anywhere. Congress, environmentalists, and even foreign governments fought White House-proposed legislation on all fronts, delivering the ultimate coup in forcing Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Anne Burford's resignation and the subsequent EPA staff house cleaning in early 1983. Anti-Reaganites scored victory after victory against Reagan's efforts to stimulate the minerals industry. Congress was stalemated on so many mining-related issues that not much was done either for or against the industry. And the US was not to get its way on the issue of sea mining either. Most of Reagan's mineral policy objectives failed to be met. Three months after the National Materials and Minerals Program Plan was presented and the Cabinet Council on Natural Resources and the Environment was made its coordinator, the head of the Cabinet Council James Watt blamed lack of progress in reviving the mining industry and creating a better strategic stockpile on the weak economy and the House of Representatives, which repeatedly thwarted efforts to open wilderness lands to mining. Congress The 97th Congress spent much of its time saying no in 1982-to the Reagan administration's deep cuts in energy and environment programs, to major changes in clean air and water laws, to oil and gas leasing in wilderness, and to killing the Department of Energy. Most of 1982 (and 1981) was spent in heated budget disputes. Some things that did not happen: • The administration and industry failed to get changes in controls of hazardous air pollutants and sulfur dioxide emissions that are implicated in the phenomenon known as acid rain. Industry had wanted to relax requirements for new industries building in clean air regions where the air act demands prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) of air quality, and to relax requirements tightening up the regulation of emissions of hazardous air pollutants. The air battle is expected to continue on five major fronts-acid rain, hazardous air pollutants, PSD, automobile pollution, and nonattainment. • Regulatory reform legislation to overhaul the way government carries out the law died a slow death last year. Business groups and the administration said federal agencies should be required to consider cost-effective measures of reaching regulatory objectives of protecting public health, safety, and the environment. Opponents, including environmentalists, feared such action would delay, weaken, or scuttle important regulations. • Congress turned thumbs down several times on proposals for oil and gas leasing in wilderness but could not agree on any new wilderness recommendations (see The Wilderness Battle). • Congress refused to open the door to the Reagan administration's plan to raise up to $4 billion a year from sales of federal lands. The administration identified surplus and excess federal lands, mostly obsolete buildings or isolated tracts of land, that could be sold by the General Services Administration (GSA) to help out the federal budget deficit. Congress took no action. Some things that did happen: • Congress extended the Defense Production Act (DPA) for six months through March 1983 without changing the 32-year-old law. That came after it failed to resolve sharp differences over proposals for critical minerals programs. Differences concerned both the amount of funds and the scope of programs that would be authorized under the DPA's Title III. Some proponents pressed for $5 billion in funding for loan guarantees or purchase commitments to spur domestic production of minerals such as cobalt. Other members of Congress wanted smaller amounts of funding, and the Reagan administration, until about November, had opposed any use of federal funds for strategic mineral programs. These measures were certain to come up again before the DPA extension expired in March. • House supporters of the Critical Materials Act of 1982 were unable to come up with the twothirds majority needed to pass the bill, so it died on the House floor in December. The bill proposed that a council be established with responsibility for coordinating federal materials research and development. The administration opposed the council creation contending that the Cabinet Council

Transportation system structures have come under very close scrutiny in the last couple of years, largely due to the damaging effects of disasters, both natural and man-made. In the Pacific northwest and California, earthquake risk is a major concern. In the central and eastern states barge impacts on bridge piers and docks are a big worry. In all cases of bridges over water and waterside structures, scour is a primary concern. Some of the results of this scrutiny have been changes in design and construction methods, and the introduction of more testing to supplement field inspection during construction, and throughout the service life of the structure. Future construction of bridges and docks will almost certainly see a continuing growth in these practices. Where foundations are concerned, particularly for bridges and waterside structures, many state and local authorities have started specifying drilled shafts rather than driven piles. Where the shafts must be constructed under water or slurry, visual inspection of most of the work is impossible, and one of several different Nondestructive Tests (NDT) is often specified. Contractors' experiences with these methods have varied considerably, and there is a great deal of controversy in the deep foundation industry over the reliability of NDT methods for assessing the integrity of foundation shafts or piles. The author has had more than 15 years of practice with the various NDT methods for deep foundations, on projects all over the US, particularly foundations for bridges and dock structures, and has developed an understanding of the "NDT controversy" as it has become known. In particular, experiences in the Pacific Northwest, California, and Alabama have illustrated the reasons for the controversy. This paper reviews these experiences, and suggests some steps that owners and contractors can take to reduce the risk of inconclusive or downright inaccurate test results.

Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation. This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of McDowell County, W. Va. Coals from 14 coal beds were selected for study: Upper Cedar Grove, Middle Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Eagle, Douglas, Iaeger, Sewell, Welch, Beckley, Fire Creek and Pocahontas Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 9. Selection was based upon estimated minable reserves. McDowell County coals rank either as high-volatile A, medium-volatile, or low-volatile bituminous coal, and this variation in rank is reflected in the wide diversity of the carbonization properties of the coals. All coals tested were either satisfactory as mined or could be upgraded to meet present chemical standards for metallurgical coke; the coals produced strong coke, as determined by ASTM shatter and tumbler tests.

In the field o f Metallic Zinc: (1) Construction of further continuous vertical retort smelting capacity in the United States and Germany. (2) Expansion of fractional distillation capacity in the United States. (3) Great expansion in the zinc-base die-casting industry in the United States and abroad. The amenability of titaniferous slags and domestic mineral concentrates to chlorination was determined in a 6 - inch diameter fluidized bed chlorinator . Ilmenites from Valley County , Idaho ; Aiken , S.C ,; Trail Ridge , Fla .; and MacIntyre , N.Y .; and a titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain , Wyo . , were used in preparing the slags . The domestic minerals tested were an ilmenite concentrate from Valley County , Idaho , and a rutile concentrate from Magnet Cove , Ark . A high - grade Australian rutile was used as a standard for comparison . The impurity content of the slags and minerals tested , which was the most critical factor affecting their performance , was dependent on the geographical source of the material . All of the materials tested were amenable to chlorination in a fluidized bed although some required special operating conditions . Titanium extractions and chlorine utilization were over 90 percent for most of the slags and the Australian rutile . The Valley County , Idaho , ilmenite performed well in the reactor despite its 34 percent iron content .
