MR. McKEEVER: I think we had to start some- where. The proceeds of the beltbuckles and hard hat stickers will certainly be a beginning in a scholarship for some of our young people. And maybe, you know we might even get one of them sometime to go to the University of Oklahoma. A few years ago the luncheon speaker for tomorrow, Brooks Mitchell, got a few of the mine presidents together and we spent a full five hours of just dedicated listening to Carl Terzian. We listened basically on three subjects: how to work with the media, how to work with image, and how to identify with our political systems and those who are in them. I remember that as one of the turning points in my perspective on how our system really works. This gentleman who will be addressing you today, Mr. Terzian, will be conducting about a three-hour session tomorrow. And it's a shame that our other activities will not allow some of the golfers to probably be there. Those of you who can come to the session tomorrow morning will find it most rewarding. A little bit later on we will also have a panel session. And I see all of the panelists are here except for Bob Golten, but I understand that he is registered. We should have a full afternoon session with Charlie and his panel. When we started working on this, we naturally went back to Carl Terzian to give us some guidance. If there is anything wrong with your session, it's my fault because he knows how these should be done and he guided us along the way. One thing that I am sorry, it wasn't his fault necessarily, is that Harry Reasoner will not be with us for lunch tomorrow. Brooks Mitchell is going to make all of the PR he can out of the fact that Harry got scratched and he got in place for him. Brooks gave me one comment along that line. He said, "Do you know what you get when you cross a gorilla with a computer"? Of course I bit on that. He said. "Well, you get a Harry Reasoner." A little over a month ago I was invited out to California to Woodbury University at Carl Terzian's insistence. I happened to be sitting by one of his vice presidents. It was a formal affair. We had to wear tuxedos and everything and Mr.Green was sitting there and he said, "You know," he didn't know who I was at that time, but he said, "You know Carl really didn't want this formal affair. Said he had a couple of friends coming from the coal mining industry and they wouldn't know what to do with tuxedos." So with that Carl, we will start this little session and it's your mike. MR. TERZIAN: Thank you very much Ira. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the men and women of the Institute for allowing me to be here. I'm deeply concerned about my reputation, my image and don't want you to get the inference that I am responsible for Ira McKeever's image. Nobody could be responsible for that! But it is a great case in point that we all should be concerned about our images. I guess tomorrow morning from about 8:30. a.m. to about 11:30 a.m. we are going to do a? hopefully, a productive and very pleasant expertence for all of us in this growing field and great interest that people have in the area of image. I happen to be from Los Angeles. I have a national firm which has handled about 600 corporations', over the years through the areas of public relations,' community, civic involvement all built around a strengthening and safe guarding our precious, free enterprise system. A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine. This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results.

As part of a program for improving, the safety of permissible explosives, the Federal Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to establish the ability of sodium chloride to reduce the incendivity of permissible explosives to firedamp atmospheres. A motivating influence for this investigation has been the comparatively extensive experience of British and other European investigators, who used sodium chloride as a component of their permitted explosives (1, 5, 6 7).5/ In the United States research and development work of this type has been less extensive, although sodium chloride has been added to permissible explosives as a cooling agent (9) for many years. The results of the first phase of this investigation were presented in a previous paper (8), which established that adding up to 10 percent sodium chloride to permissible explosives reduces the likelihood of ignition of firedamp in the gallery test; however, the results were somewhat inconsistent, and the conclusions were qualified. Accordingly, the investigation was continued with a study of the effect of added sodium chloride as a function of the quantity added and of the particle size of the salt.

The Outotec nickel matte chloride leaching process is especially suitable for small capacity standalone nickel refineries. The matte is leached with hydrochloric acid and oxygen in multiple steps in atmospheric OKTOP® reactors. Oxygen feed prevents reductive conditions and hydrogen formation in the leaching process. A sufficiently high acid concentration keeps the iron dissolved in the solution. The iron is removed after leaching by precipitation and the pregnant leach solution continues to metals recovery. The metals recovery from the chloride solution is done by solvent extractions, where ammonia is used for pH control. Copper and nickel are stripped from the organic phases into sulphate solutions. Metals can be recovered from the purified solution by conventional electrowinning. Other alternatives are precipitation or hydrogen reduction processes. The ammonium chloride in the solvent extraction raffinate is regenerated into ammonia. The calcium chloride solution from ammonia regeneration is routed to acid regeneration where sulphuric acid is added and ultra-pure gypsum is precipitated. The hydrochloric acid solution from this step is recycled back to leaching. The process yields good overall metal recoveries and expensive

Introduction The mines of northern Ontario have entered the class of deep mines. It has often been asked: How deep can operations be carried on? What will the temperature be? This paper is a résumé of a brief survey of rock temperatures made by the Ontario Department of Mines during the year 1932. Present temperatures were recorded and the geothermal gradients that now exist were determined. No alarming situations were found, but many interesting ones have been noted. Northern Ontario mines are fortunately situated as compared with most deep-level mines of the world. The mean yearly temperature, as determined from meteorological records of the Federal Department of Marine, is from 33 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit. The tables on the next page show the temperature range in and about our mining camps ( l ). As no exact figures were obtainable for Kirkland Lake, the data for Iroquois Falls, which is about 50 miles northwest, were taken as applicable there. The figures for Timmins were checked against those of Cochrane and Iroquois Falls and found to be very similar, so that the Cochrane data may be used for the Porcupine camp. The yearly mean temperature is considered to be 33.5 F.

Ingress of air into the longwall goaf environment needs to be managed appropriately to reduce the risk of creating a spontaneous combustion event. The maingate goaf edge is an area of particular concern in this respect, as air often penetrates for some distance into the goaf along this region inbye of the longwall face. Since the flow rate in this part of the goaf is also quite low, an opportunity exists to disrupt the air pathway by implementing a barrier to the airflow. Previous attempts using plugs made from an assortment of materials have resulted in varying degrees of success. More recently, Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) has introduced the use of a chemical foam that is mixed with nitrogen to produce a standing barrier with the consistency of shaving cream. The implementation of this practice has consistently proven to be very effective for reducing the oxygen concentration along the maingate goaf edge by systematically retreating the foaming unit with the longwall. This paper presents how the foam is applied in the underground goaf environment to prevent oxygen ingress and uses results from gas monitoring to confirm the foam effectiveness.

"A high iron content manganese ore was reduced at 900~1200°C and followed by a magnetic separation process. SEM and EDS analyzes were employed to examine the transformation of microstructure and phase in reduced sample and the mechanism was revealed. Results showed that elements enriched during reduction. Iron existed in the metal iron phase and most of oxygen formed compound with manganese. Consequently a clear distinguish between iron phase and manganese minerals formed, which was beneficial to the separation of iron and manganese. But the iron phase can not be monomer dissociation in grinding process and manganese compounds turned into magnetic product as package and mechanic inclusion due to the isomorphism of iron and manganese and the small particle size. And MnO could be found partially in iron phase, which hindered the further separation of manganese and iron.IntroductionManganese is widely used in industry. The amount of manganese used in steel industry is very huge and 90% manganese is used in steel industry. Manganese ore resources are rich in China, yet with fewer rich ore but more low-grade ore which accounts for 93.6% and fine refractory ore. The constitution of the ore is very complex and more than 73% of all the manganese ore contains iron[l,2]. With the increasing of consumption of steel, the demand for manganese is becoming larger and larger and the imported ore accounts for more than 50%. Therefore, how to use the manganese ore efficiently has very significant meaning. The main method is manganese residual, which is simple and stable. However, the development of the method is limited by the quality of manganese ore, the huge amount of manganese residual, the technology of blast furnace process and economics[3,4]. Chemical benefication which may pollute environment and is difficult to recover iron is still being researched[5,6]. The paper investigated the process in which anthracite coal was the reducing agent for coal-based direct reduction and magnetic separation of the ore, and SEM with EDS measurements were employed to examine the transformation of phase in reduced sample and the mechanism was revealed[7,8]."

"Experimental work has been attempted to find a useful criterion of comminution which can be determined simply in a laboratory. The suitability of the ratio of the square of tensile strength to Young's modulus, St2/E, previously derived from the theory of elasticity as a criterion of comminution, was examined measuring tensile strength, Young's modulus and critical height for drop-weight impact of five different rocks. However, satisfactory correlation between St2 /E and critical height has not been obtained, suggesting the necessity of further experimental verification of the representative value of Young's modulus of rocks. The plot of St2 vs. critical height, however, shows one-to-one correspondence, and this finding suggests that St• may be a useful criterion of impact crushing. Also, a close relationship was observed between st• and the energy index for tumbling mill grinding of •the sample rocks. It is confirmed from these findings that the quantity St• is a useful criterion of comminution of rocks, not only for impact crushing but also for tumbling mill grinding. As shown in the experimental part of this paper, the determination ol St with irregularly shaped specimens is simple."

ZnO microprisms in thin film form were produced by the low cost spray pyrolysis technique at a substrate temperature of 350 ± 5 °C on glass substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to explore morphology and composition of the films respectively. The films were found to be oxygen rich and contain chlorine. ImageJ software was used to analyze the size of the prisms, where the diameter and length of the microprisms were estimated.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

The disposal of dewatered coalmine tailings and coarse reject within spoil piles is gaining popularity as a means of eliminating separate surface tailings storage facilities or dams. The contrasting characteristics of coalmine spoil, coarse reject and tailings are somewhat complimentary, making the co-disposal of dewatered tailings within spoil piles geotechnically feasible and environmentally attractive. However, the impacts of mixing plant rejects within spoil piles are not well understood; in particular, the effects of water draining from the mixed plant rejects on the moisture content of the surrounding spoil. Changes in moisture content can cause additional collapse and degradation settlements of the spoil pile. A series of laboratory tests has been undertaken on mixtures of dewatered coalmine tailings, coarse reject and spoil. The results of these tests have been incorporated into a spreadsheet-based settlement prediction tool to investigate the effects of incorporating mixed plant rejects on total spoil pile settlements. The Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) is by far the largest and most diverse industrial processing region (with supporting industries) in Western Australia. As with elsewhere in Australia (and globally), the KIA is facing sustainability challenges on various fronts, such as increasing water and energy scarcity, climate change, an aging workforce, and growing community expectations. Through the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) the industries within Kwinana are working closely on common issues in the KIA, including the sustainable development of the region. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made by the industries towards the improvement of the sustainability performance at the company and regional level. Given the ever increasing sustainability pressures, there is strong desire to address sustainability challenges in the KIA, through a pro-active and collaborative industry approach. A sustainability roadmap is being developed to assist the KIC and its industry members with strategic decision making on the long-term sustainability of there. At the heart of the roadmap is a set of key performance indicators for each of seven priority themes or focus areas (water use, by-products produced, greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, economic performance, environment, community impacts and sustainable workforce). Aspirational targets and subsequent strategies are being developed for those activities where the KIC has an influence and can make a positive impact. The indicators and their targets enable constructive stakeholder discussions (eg with government and community) on emerging local issues and possible future directions for the KIA. The paper will report on the development process and the preliminary results of the sustainability roadmap for the KIA, including a historical perspective on milestones achieved so far and future aspirations.

This report describes the study of factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) trailing cable splices used in underground coal mines. Improvements in quality, dependability, and design of splice kits and shop splices are presented in the study results and recommended guidelines and regulations. Recommended research programs are included which describe approaches for development of the recommended guidelines and regulations for medium voltage trailing cable splices. The basis for the conclusions and recommendations presented in this report is included in three appendices which describe a survey, splice examination, and general requirements development prepared during the progress of this study.

Blasting with the aim to reduce oversize boulders in underground has many hurdles due to limited accessibilities and poor site conditions. Optimized drilling and blasting parameters can help to achieve this objective. The major challenges of the blast designers lie within deciding blast geometry, namely drill hole diameter, burden, and spacing. The general approaches covered worldwide to determine burden-spacing are based on various rules of thumb, which are based on previous experiences of blasts and the associated outcomes. However, many parameters influencing optimum burden-spacing to achieve desired fragment size are site specific. Sometimes drill geometry is decided based on associated blasting hazards rather than rock fragmentation. The Kuz–Ram model is a worldwide accepted rock fragmentation predictor. The parameters associated with this predictor also include burden-spacing for a blast. Back calculation of burden-spacing from the Kuz–Ram model can be used to achieve desired fragment size. This paper deals with burden-spacing determination by using an empirical approach for the underground stope ring blasting.

In the past five years Cuba has been attempting to more than double its nickel production by constructing two new ammonia leaching plants. No metals are yet produced on commercial scale but a variety of oxides and sulfides. This report updates the Cuban nickel industry as a result of two visits : one at the invitation of the Cuban Ministry of Basic Industries in 1987 and the other as a consultant to the United Nations for the Cuban Laterite Project in 1989.

The triazine molecules have not been given much attention and they are potential collectors that may positively impact the mineral processing industry. The adsorption of triazine as collectors such as sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT) on pyrite form a basis in design of flotation collectors that may be applicable in a wide range of sulfide minerals. The SDTBAT collector was compared with the sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) and sodium normal butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). All collectors were adsorbed in their neutral form containing sodium on the pyrite (100) surface. The computational calculations found that the adsorption energies followed the order: SDTBAT (-300.35 kJ/mol) > SNBX (-186.10 kJ/mol) > SNBDTC (-163.78 kJ/mol). It was observed that the SNBX and SNBDTC adsorbed through the S atoms, while the SDTBAT adsorbed through the S atoms and N atoms onto Fe atoms. It is clear that the SDTBAT had a strong binding energy which is attributed to the presence of the triazine group that is electron depositing to the active S atoms compared to the SNBX which possessed the oxygen that is electron withdrawing. Moreover, the SDTBAT collector was found to bind stronger than the xanthate. This was complimented by microflotation tests that showed fast floating and higher recoveries of pyrite when using the SDTBAT collector than the xanthate and DTC. This clearly demonstrated that the SDTBAT is a potential collector to replace the xanthate collector due to its high selectivity and flotation power.

THE Privateer mine consists of a group of mineral claims situated in the Zeballos area, on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 180 miles north of Victoria. Although Zeballos is a comparatively new mining camp, its transportation facilities can be considered exceptionally good. General freight and supplies are brought in by either C.P.R. or Frank Waterhouse steamers from either Victoria or Vancouver. Service by these boats varies from five to ten days and the trip from Victoria takes approximately two days. Passengers may use the C.P.R. boats, or, if speed is essential, they may fly, in which case they have the choice of two flying companies, namely, Canadian Air-ways, Limited, and Ginger Coote Airways. The average flight from Vancouver takes approximately two hours. Excellent unloading facilities are provided at the beach by a government dock for the steamers and a floating dock for aeroplanes. The mine, which is approximately five miles from the beach, is serviced by a fairly good gravel road, which has proved satisfactory for all haulage purposes. Zeballos has the reputation of having one of the heaviest rainfalls on the west coast, but as no accurate records have been kept, no comparisons can be made. H. C. Gunning, in his report, comments on the weather from 1929 to 1932, and one would judge that the practically continuous rainfall did not add to the pleasures of the field work. During the summer of 1938, the opposite condition prevailed and the area had exceptionally dry and pleasant weather. The snowfall is generally light at the lower elevations, but very heavy higher up. No extreme cold weather is encountered during the winter, which is generally short.

"The start up of a new mining and metallurgical facility is a crucial step in the life of any mining project. The mining industries record is poor when evaluating processing plant operation relative to design capacity predictions made during feasibility studies. Multivariate geometallurgical orebody characterisation, using principle component analysis, is a method developed for improving predictive processing performance models during feasibility stages of mine development. This paper outlines the application of multivariate geometallurgical characterisation to the Cadia East deposit located in New South Wales, Australia. Cadia East is a low grade high tonnage copper-gold porphyry system in advanced stages of feasibility analysis. A dataset of ~32000 measurements and 150 comminution parameters (A*b and BMWI) has been used to develop class-based characterisation and modelling methodologies. The results of this study outline the development of class-based ore characterisation and provide a technique for analysing and interpreting large and complex geometallurgical datasets for prediction and optimisation of processing performance. The results enable sophisticated population modelling to be conducted which displays deposit scale processing variability, aiding circuit design specifications and predictions during feasibility studies.INTRODUCTIONA feasibility study is the major technical report on which the decision to proceed to production and on which financing is based (Shillabeer & Gypton, 2003). The mining industry’s record is not very good when actual construction time, costs, and operating performance are compared to the projections made in feasibility studies (Ballard, 1983; Gypton & Ward, 2000; Gypton 2002). A study by McNulty (1998) found that of 41 mineral processing and chemical plants built between 1965 and 1995, only 56% achieved design capacity within two years of commissioning and three were closed after failing to achieve design capacity within 36 months of start up (Shillabeer & Gypton, 2003). McNulty (1998) related this underachievement and failure of start up performance to the use of innovative process technology without appreciating and managing technical risk. Factors contributing to technical risk include inadequate pilot plant testing, scaled up prototype equipment without backup, design flaws and poorly understood complex process chemistry."

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.
