The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under a Memorandum of Agreement with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), established design criteria for a facility to field residues from municipal waste combustion. This facility, which is available to potential users on a cost-sharing basis, is also applicable to a variety of inorganic waste materials from smelting or melting operations. The design consists of a mechanical feed handling system, electric arc melting furnace, fume-off gas handling system, and thermal oxidizer for final off gas treatment. Screw conveyors and a bucket elevator deliver up to 2,000 Ib/h of minus I-in material to a three-phase electric arc melting furnace. This unique 800-kVe A furnace has a water-cooled shell and roof to minimize interaction of the melt with the refractory lining. The volume of the hearth below the slag taphole is approximately 1.2 st of steel. The furnace is sealed, allowing atmosphere control within the furnace and fume duct by nitrogen or inert gas injection. A jet-pulsed baghouse removes particulate from the off gas and serves as an acid gas scrubber. The clean off gas is heated to 1,800' F for 1 s in a propane-fired thermal oxidizer before being vented to the atmosphere.

Powder metallurgy processing of commercial Raney nickel powders was examined. The typical angular particle shape, in conjuction with aluminum present in a eutectic phase, facilitated interlocking leading to excellent green strength after compaction. Density and porosity as influenced by the compacting pressure were studied over the range of 37.5 to 207 meganewton per square meter (MN/m2). Sintering in an inert atmosphere from 575° to 850° C caused a volume increase which is attributed to a solid state reaction between Al and Ni2Al3 phases. The reaction is 3Al + Ni2Al3 ? 2NiA13. A thermal pretreatment of 70 hours at 700° C was required to prevent this reaction from occurring during sintering. Density and porosity as a function of compacting pressure and sintering temperature were determined after a thermal pretreatment of the powder.

A simulation code called SIMJIG and the user interfaces have been developed using discrete element method (DEM) and the .NET platform respectively for the jigging process. DEM platform is used for tracking of particles in the jigging operation. DEM uses the net force balance on the particles to track the trajectory of the particle. Simulation results are compared with experimental results obtained by jigging of low grade iron ore lumps. Two different iron ore samples one from Chatishgarh and one from Odisha were used for the experimental studies. The Alljig? stratification test rig meant for batch laboratory experimental studies has been used in the present work. The behavior of different sizes of material on jigging has been examined. Later, the particle size behavior during jigging at different layers of the jig bed has been studied. Further stratification profile across the jig bed has also been studied. It was observed that simulation results are matching quite nicely with the experimental results. The SIMJIG simulator developed in the present study could be used for predicting the performance of the jigging operation effectively. Sales of diesel fuel in the United States during the post year and a half have increased greatly. In 1955 over 174 million barrels were sold of which 80 million (or 46 percent), were used by the railroads, and over 44 million barrels (25 ½ percent) of the fuel were used in trucks, busses, tractors, and heavy moving equipment. Vessels (12 percent), industry (9 ½ ), the military forces (4 ½ ), power plants (2), and oil companies (1/2 percent) account for the remainder. 2/ Dally deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries averaged over 16,750 barrels during the first six months of 1956 in comparison with 15, 250 barrels during the corresponding period of 1955. 3/ Information on the properties of diesel fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply such information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

The classes of ore deposits in the mountain province of Colorado that have been the most productive in the past and that offer the greatest promise for the future are: (1) disseminated or stockwork molybdenum deposits associated with Tertiary stocks; (2) combination precious- and base-metal veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks; and (3) base-metal replacement deposits and veins in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Veins in Precambrian rocks, including precious metal-bearing sulfide veins, gold-silver telluride veins, and tungsten veins, have been mined extensively in the past, but their aggregate output has been far subordinate to that of the groups named above, and the outlook for major output from them in the future is poor. Principal ore deposits of south-central Wyoming are sedimentary iron ores of Precambrian age and uranium deposits in Tertiary sedimentary rocks. Precambrian deposits of several kinds are scattered through the mountains of both states. The most promising of these, based on present indications, are vanadiferous titaniferous magnetite in southern Wyoming and southwestern Colorado and thorium-niobium rare-earth deposits associated with alkalic intrusive complexes in Colorado. Most of the mining districts of Colorado are in the Colorado mineral belt, a generally narrow but somewhat irregular belt that extends northeastward across the north-trending mountain ranges and the north-northwest trending geologic grain of the state. The belt is characterized by intrusive rocks of Laramide and younger age and by ore deposits, and it occupies environments ranging from Precambrian crystalline rocks through Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks to Tertiary volcanic rocks. Two ages of intrusion and ore deposition recently have been recognized in the mineral belt. One is Laramide (late Cretaceous and early Tertiary), and the other is Oligocene. As interpreted herein, the major replacement deposits and most of the sulfide vein deposits in Precambrian and sedimentary rocks are Laramide in age, and the molybdenum deposits, the tungsten and the gold telluride veins in Precambrian rocks, and the precious- and base-metal veins in volcanic rocks are Oligocene in age. In general, the Laramide deposits are mesothermal in aspect, and the Oligocene deposits are principally epithermal. The existence of two mineralization stages, in considerable part characterized by different suites of metals, has many applications in exploration.

Four friction pile load test programs, including 23 tension tests and 9 compression tests, have been performed as part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston, Massachusetts. The tests, performed on both precast, prestressed concrete (PPC) piles and steel piles, yielded the following adhesion values: [Soil Type Clay Clay Glacial Till Interbedded Sand and Clay Interbedded Sand and Clay Pile Type PPC Steel Steel Steel PPC Adhesion (psf) 610 to 1,200 230 to 900 220 to 550 680 1,280 ] The adhesion appears to be affected by differences in pile material type, with PPC piles having higher adhesion than steel piles. However, part of the apparent difference for the clay may be due to differences in time between driving and testing. The significant range of test data means that the need for site specific testing to determine or verify design values of adhesion should be considered during design. Creep rates at loads near failure ranged from about 0.02 to 0.18 inches per log cycle of time, with most values in the range of about 0.04 to 0.08 inches per log cycle of time.

Tests and observations of a Diesel-powered locomotive used for under-ground haulage, in a-clay mine were made by representatives-of the Bureau of Mines .primarily to determine the composition of the exhaust gases produced by the engine under actual haulage conditions-and to determine the effects of the operation on the quality of the mine atmosphere. In addition to ascertaining these conditional t proved interesting to analyze the test, data in regard to certain other performance, characteristics of the engine. This report presents results of tests of the mine locomotive, prefaced by a brief resume of the performance characteristics of Diesel engines to facilitate discussion.

The article illustrates the Hydromill technology, as applied in urban sites, and its advantages in terms of quality of the end product, mitigation of the construction impact, and optimization of the logistics at the site. Also highlighted are the main features of the excavation equipment and slurry treatment plant. Two recent urban applications of this technology in Europe are briefly described, together with the forthcoming application to the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. Introduction The Hydromill technology has been used extensively in Europe in the last decade for slurry wall construction in urban environments. In Italy, this technology has been applied by Ing. Giovanni Rodio & C., Impresa Costruzioni Speciali S.p.A. in two large projects. The first project is the construction of Stations Darsena and San Giorgio of the first metro line in Genova. The second project is the "Cut-and Cover" tunnel for the railway link in Torino. Hydromill technology will be used for the construction of the Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete walls of the Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project, contract C14C2, Utility Relocation at Fulton Street.

Computer-controlled machine sorting may, if properly applied, have a dramatic effect on overall economics of a mine operation. Radiometric and photometric sorters have been used for many years and new developments will be reported, such as a sorter for fine particles and a conductivity/magnetic sorter. Application examples with emphasis on precious metals will be given. Economics for some of the projects will be reviewed and discussed. Sorting underground is shown to be particularly attractive, but machine sorting would be profitable in most cases based on savings in transportation and milling/beneficiation costs only.

This paper discusses the design of small head frames that will fill the needs of prospectors and small operators whose operations are conducted through shafts. The head frames considered were designed to handle relatively small tonnages. It was assumed that the shafts in which buckets are used would not exceed 300 feet in depth and that not over 60 tons of rock would be hoisted, in, 14 hours. In the design of the larger head frames, a hoisting capacity of about 250 tons per 6 hours from a depth of 300 to 500 feet was assumed. Under these conditions, hoisting speed, rate of acceleration, and weight of rope have a negligible effect on the head frame design and, therefore, have been ignored in the following, discussion. Because timber is relatively cheap and easily obtained in most mining areas, the discussion has been confined to timber construction.

This investigation examined the feasibility of altering the inorganic component of North Dakota lignite by ion exchange. Lignite of specific size consist was washed with various ionic solutions and examined for evidence of exchange. Ions of higher valance substituted preferentially at equivalent concentrations. Results indicate that a major portion of the inorganic material associated with lignite is combined in exchangeable form with the organic component. Particle size of the treated coal is a critical factor in determining the rate of exchange. The data indicate that monovalent ions are easily replaced by divalent and trivalent ions, and the presence of ionic material in slurries containing finely divided lignite significantly increases filtration rates.

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. Des quatre épisodes de déformation étudiés par l’entremise de cartographie structurale, trois semblent contrôler la géométrie de l’Anomalie A (D2, D3, et D4). Les plis P2 et P3 sont coaxiaux et sont replissés en dômes et bassins par les plis P4. Les zones minéralisées sont subparallèles aux plans axiaux des plis P2. Une analyse structurale effectuée sur une zone minéralisée exposée à la surface indique que la minéralisation aurifère est localisée dans un système de veines de quartz qui contient des veines générées durant D2 et D3. Des représentations en trois-dimensions créées avec le programme informatique ®GoCAD à partir de données de forages suggèrent que le système de veines est localisé dans des zones de failles D2 ainsi que dans des zones de dilatation associées avec D3. Trois des quatre zones qui forment l’Anomalie A possèdent des plans axiaux P2 qui peuvent être liés par l’entremise d’une géométrie qui respecte le style des plis P3 et P4. Rotating piston deadweight gages have been used for many years for measurement of pressure to several hundred atmospheres. They have been calibrated by comparison of fluid pressures produced by various loads bearing on the piston bases, as measured by corresponding heights of balancing columns of mercury. When expressed in appropriate units, these ratios of column heights to piston loads are called piston constants. Experimental arrangements and procedures for their determination are presented in this paper, followed by a discussion of their significance and of their subsequent applications.

Knowledge acquired from this research contributes to a better understanding of the physical structure of Green River oil shale and provides fundamental data and concepts that may serve to improve oil-shale technology. This study by the Bureau of Mines indicates that oil shale is a highly consolidated organic-inorganic system with no significant micropore structure, pore volume, or internal surface. This system is a form of physical structure that precludes rapid diffusion of either gases or liquids. The mineral matter consists essentially of nonspherical particles that tend to follow a log-normal size distribution. An excess of 99 weight-percent of these particles have equivalent spherical diameters of less than 44 microns--75 weight-percent are from 2 to 20 microns, and 15 weight-percent are less than 2 microns. The surface area (3 to 5 square meters per gram) of these mineral constituents is mainly external surface. The mineral constituents contain some micropore structure--pore radii ranging from 10 to 100 Angstrom--with the pore sizes randomly distributed. Distribution of the organic matter within the inorganic matrix is essentially interparticle and not intraparticle. The organic matter within the micropores of the mineral constituents is less than 4 percent of the total. Estimates made from surface area data suggest that perhaps only a small amount of the organic matter is bonded either physically or chemically to the mineral constituents.

This report is volume 3 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,' and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Methane Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem is used to determine methane emission rates into the mine environment. These flow rates are then used by the simulator in planning primary and secondary ventilation systems, planning a methane drainage system, and analyzing complex ventilation networks. Both steady state and unsteady state gas flows are included, and have been modeled as second order nonlinear partial differential equations. Finite difference equations are used to obtain numerical solutions to the models using a central differencing scheme. An application of the model is presented. The appendices include derivation of the gas flow equations used in the model as well as a users manual for the computer program.

In a consideration of the various means whereby more economical and more efficient use may be made of the fuels in the United States, the possibility of obtaining for the production of illuminating gas other and cheaper fuels than the Pennsylvania coals demands attention. For the Government, as well as for private corporations and the householder, there can be no more economical and efficient way of using some coals than through the medium of illuminating gas. In the stove, gas reduces the labor cost of heat production and lessens the drudgery of the kitchen; burned in the Welsbach mantle, it is an excellent and cheap illuminant. In addition, the coke that remains after the gas has been recovered furnishes a smokeless fuel that has about the same heating value as anthracite. Hence any investigations that will indicate how local coals through proper treatment may be substituted for the higher priced and rapidly vanishing Pennsylvania gas coals will bring about lower prices for both gas and coke and will also aid to conserve for use in metallurgical processes the coking coals of Pennsylvania and of ot,her States. The annual drain on the gas-coal resources of this country and the importance of the gas and coke industries are indicated by the fact that 8,390,129 tons of coal were carbonized in retorts in the United States in 1909. The resulting salable products from by-product ovens were 15,791,220,000 cubic feet of coal gas, 6,254,644 tons of coke, and 60,126,000 gallons of tar. The total value of all by-products was about $28,508,637.

The surface-to-inseam (SIS) directional drilling technique has been utilised at Oaky Creek Coal for more than a decade to predrain both the Oaky No 1 and Oaky North mining areas. The cumulative drilling program constitutes a total of 140 lateral and 200 vertical holes, and 405 km of lateral drilling.The use of SIS gas drainage has been successful with the following site-specific benefits being recognised:ability to drain German Creek seam gas contents to residual gas levels of new mining areas within an 18-month period from commencement of well productionstructural geological verification of the mine design well in advance of development mining occurring in an areaability to conduct successful predrainage of the overlying Aquila seam to reduce subsequent goaf emissions.Appropriate and up-to-date geological knowledge during the design and drilling process is a significant influence to achieving success. Vertical production wells need to be located in a position that is most effective to remove water from hole. The lateral hole should not include intersections with significant geological structure.SIS drilling provides continuous seam roof/floor data to help define seam geometry and locate geological hazards with high accuracy. In faulted ground and with variable seam gradients, SIS data can resolve geological ambiguities from seismic sections and enhance seam correlation that would otherwise be available only from discrete and closely-spaced infill vertical exploration drilling.Here, we review some examples of SIS configurations and practice to highlight key learnings in drilling long inseam holes (up to 1900 m per arm) ahead of development and mining. "The processing of nickel laterites has been a topic of major interest at CSIRO for almost twenty years. During this period CSIRO has collaborated with other researchers and industry in developing a better understanding of existing processes and been actively involved in testing/developing new beneficiation and process options for these ores. The current paper summarises the results of selected studies and highlights improvements that have been achieved. Key topics to be discussed include enhancements in the mineralogical characterisation, beneficiation approaches, improvements in the understanding and application of leaching technologies, the development of synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) for the recovery of nickel/cobalt from laterite leach liquors and the collaborative development of the Direct Nickel process. Future opportunities and key research questions will be briefly examined.INTRODUCTION Nickel laterite ores comprise a significant resource in Australia and according to United States Geological Survey data nearly a quarter of world reserves are located there (USGS, 2016). More specifically, around 95% of Australian nickel resources (laterite and sulfide) are located in Western Australia (Australian Government, 2017). Given the recent closure of Queensland Nickel, essentially all of Australian nickel production occurs in Western Australia and the primary producers of processed nickel products include Nickel West (Kwinana) with ~84,000 t saleable nickel metal in 2016 (BHP Billiton, 2017), Minara Resources (Murrin Murrin) with 46,700 t nickel metal produced in 2015 (Glencore Australia, 2017), and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Ravensthorpe) who sold 25,882 t nickel as mixed hydroxide product in 2016 (First Quantum Minerals, 2017). The total sales of nickel from Western Australia in the 2015-16 financial year were 175,722 t. The study of nickel laterites at CSIRO recommenced at the time second generation High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) plants were being commissioned at Bulong, Cawse and Murrin Murrin in the late 1990’s. A combination of technical and engineering issues meant that the ramp-up times at these operations were slower than expected and the outcomes resulting from the attendant problems are well documented (e.g. Griffin & Becker, 2000; Reid & Barnett, 2002; O’Callaghan, 2003) while the issues faced at the BHP-Billiton-built Ravensthorpe plant have been addressed by the current owners of this project, First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Piper, 2012)."

"INTRODUCTION To increase the supply of ore needed to produce steel the Bureau of Mines has explored 187 mineral deposits containing chromium, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, fluorspar, tungsten, vanadium, or coal during the fiscal years. 1940-44, the deposits thus explored were selected from several thousand that were first examined to appraise their possibilities. The objective of the exploration was to determine the tonnage and grade of ores upon which mining, operations might be based, and the metallurgical processing that was most suitable for their utilization.Most of these deposits were sub-marginal by pre-war standards; hence there had been no incentive for their exploration, yet many such deposits were known to exist that probably contained ore sufficient in grade and amount to be utilized as war reserves.Some of the Bureau's exploration projects have disclosed substantial or even very large amounts of ore, much of which is fairly high in grade. In a few of them bodies of high-grade ore have been found, though in others the tonnage has proved to be too small or too low-grade for utilization."
