As escórias de forno elétrico a arco (FEA) têm diversas funções, entre elas a melhoria da eficiência energética através do fenômeno da espumação. Por isso o estudo das escórias é de suma importância nos FEA’s. Um dos fatores que determina a qualidade da espumação e a sua eficácia é presença de partículas sólidas na escória. A saturação de MgO é extremamente importante, pois além de garantir partículas sólidas garante também a compatibilidade química para minimizar o consumo do refratário. Neste trabalho, foi feito o estudo da saturação de MgO para escórias no sistema CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO-Al2O3, onde avaliou-se a influência que a basicidade binária, os teores de FeO e do Al2O3 tem sobre o mesmo. Foram feitos diagramas ternários, onde viu-se as diferenças que os teores de Al2O3 tem sobre os campos líquidos e as demais fases presentes. Foram feitos os diagramas de saturação isotérmicos (ISD’s) encontrando os mesmos pontos de dupla saturação quando comparados com os diagramas ternários. Fez-se uma validação dos ISD comparando a posição de diferentes corridas com a energia elétrica consumida. Quanto mais próxima a corrida está da linha de saturação menor será seu consumo energético.

Consulting engineering and drafting firms are used to supply specialized services and technical personnel in-house at Timmins to handle overloads on capital projects under the direction of Ecstall engineers.The operating and maintenance departments depend on the engineering department to supply engineering, design and drafting services for any new facilities or for any planned alteration to existing facilities. To do this efficiently requires a high level of communication and co-operation with these departments. This has been a major factor in developing the present organization of the department shown in Figure 63.The organization is predicated on a strong central technical and engineering resource from which personnel can be assigned responsibilities for different projects, and in different areas, as the work load demands. Job satisfaction is very high because of the variety and challenge in the tasks. Additionally, participation in projects with production and maintenance personnel broadens each technical employee's knowledge of operating and maintenance problems."

Large quantities of electrical and electronic equipments are discarded at the end-of-life (EOL) in different industries and house hold applications. Their disposal is creating a challenging environmental problem due to the presence of hazardous metals and non-metallic materials such as epoxy resins and plastics including brominated flame retardants etc particularly in printed circuit boards (PCBs). The recovery valuable metals and separation of hazardous materials from discarded PCBs will not only conserve the resources but also mitigate the environmental pollution. From a recycling point of view for a sustainable society, the studies have been carried out for the recovery of metal values from EOL-PCBs of DVD video players (DVD-PCBs) and vacuum cleaners (VC-PCBs) using physical beneficiation techniques. The concentration of the metals was found to be 43 wt.% and 30 wt.% in DVD-PCBs and VC-PCBs, respectively. Both the PCBs samples were ground in a hammer mill after cutting and their size analysis was carried out. The liberation of the metallic and non-metallic fractions was investigated under the microscope for different size fractions. Subsequently, froth flotation and pneumatic air separation studied were carried out to enrich the metallic constituents. The studies showed the enrichment of metals in coarser particles (-1000 +150 µm) and non-metals in the finer particles -150 µm following mechanical recycling process. A grade of 90 % with 75% recovery was achieved by froth flotation, but lower grade and recovery of 75% and 65% respectively were obtained by pneumatic separation with -1500 µm powders for DVD-PCBs. A grade of 86% metal was obtained by froth flotation with 76% recovery in the case of VC-PCBs. The lower grade of 65% with almost same recovery was achieved during pneumatic separation studies due to lower concentration of metals in VC-PCBs. The studies also showed that the froth flotation is an efficient process for enrichment of metals from both the samples. The process is environmental friendly as no chemicals are employed during entire processing. The higher recovery and grade of metal is expected to be obtained on a large scale beneficiation process.

Americans are taking a more critical view of various environmental laws because the effects of those laws are becoming more pervasive and intrusive, according to William Perry Pendley. And Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt is seemingly so unpopular in the West, he no longer campaigns there for Clinton Administration policies. Pendley is president and chief legal officer of the Mountain States Legal Foundation, a public service, non-profit law association that takes on property rights cases for people who cannot afford representation. He was one of the luncheon speakers at the 101st Northwest Mining Association meeting, held in Spokane, WA in early December.

The main forces acting on minerals in conventional size reduction units are compression, impact, attrition, and/or abrasion. Usually a combination of these forces shares the breakage action of the minerals with one or more of these forces dominating the breaking action, depending on the machine used. The present work concentrates on the behavior of quartz when stressed with compression force in a confined piston die. Several size fractions within the size range minus 10 mm to plus 0.85 mm were compressed in the piston die. The measured parameters are compression load, bed thickness, displacement as a result of compression, rate of displacement, and the size distribution of the products. It was found that the size distributions are, to some extent, different from those produced by the ball mill or the high-pressure roll mill. This is mainly because of the differences in the type of the acting forces in each case. It was also found that the cumulative weight of the distributions is reasonably normalizable with respect to the median particle size of the product. The specific energy expended is inversely proportional to the median size of the products, and the reduction ratios, xf/xp, are directly proportional to the applied compression force, and hence, to the specific energy expended. A simple model is suggested for predicting the particle size distribution as a function of the expended energy. The calculated values of the size distributions match fairly well with the experimental values, except at the very low energy levels, where most of the energy expended is consumed in the rearrangement and packing of the particles in the confined space with little or no breakage.

The ternary-alloy system Nb-Mo-C was investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallo-graphic techniques; a complete phase diagram for temperatures above 1500°C was established. Above 1960°C, niobium monocarbide and the cubic (Bl) high-tenzperature phase in the Mo-C system form an uninterrupted series of solid solutions. The ternary range of the pseudocubic q MoCl-, is very restricted. Dimolyb-denum carbide dissolves up to 44 mol pct Nb2C (2240°C), whereas the maximum solid solubility of MO2C in Nb2C does not exceed 5 mol pct. The order-disorder transformation temperatures in Mo2C and Nb2C are lowered by the mutual metal exchanges. Six invariant (p = const) reactzons occur in the ternary system; three correspond to class 11-type four-phase reactions involving a liquid phase, one to a class I (eutectoid)-type, and two further isotherms are associated with limiting tie lines. The results of the Phase diagram investigation are discussed, and the thermodynamic interpretation identifies the low relative stability of the binary sub-carbides in conjunction with the large stability diflerences between niobium and molybdenum carbides as the cause for the formation of a stable equilibrium between the monocarbide and the metal phase in the ternary reson. Due to their refractoriness, the carbides of the high-melting transition metals have received increased interest in recent years as base materials in composite structures for aerospace applications at high temperatures and for the development of self-bonded cutting tool materials; other novel fields of application include power reactors, where operation at high temperatures becomes essential for attaining high power efficiencies. In these applications, the increased reaction rates at high temperatures require a close consideration of the chemical interactions between the alloy constituents. As a consequence, a detailed knowledge of the phase relationships in the alloy systems is required in order to provide a sound basis for developmental -type work. Partly as a result of the considerable experimental difficulties associated with the investigation of this high-melting alloy class, no complete studies of ternary metal-carbon systems have been performed until recently. Even the high-temperature phase relationships in the binary transition metal-carbon systems have been delineated only during the past few years to a degree of accuracy required for a more detailed study of ternary or higher-order alloys. In recent investigations of binary and ternary systems of refractory transition metals with carbon, boron, and silicon,&apos; alloys from the ternary systems Nb-Mo-C became of interest because of the demonstrated possibility2,3 of obtaining compatible composites based on metal + monocarbide combinations. In the meantime, however, studies in other, but related, ternary metal-carbon systems, such as Ta-W-C, have shown that the solid-state equilibria may change significantly toward higher temperatures (>2000°C), and that extrapolations based on low-temperature equilibrium data are, in general, not very reliable. Although the lower-temperature (<2000°C) phase relationships in the Nb-Mo-C system are similar to those found in Ta-W-C, a cursory thermodynamic analysis of the equilibria indicated4 that complete solid-solution formation between Mo2C and Nb2C should not occur at higher temperatures. The present work was conducted in order to experimentally verify these expectations and, in addition, to provide phase equilibrium data in the melting range of the alloys. In the boundary systems, niobium and molybdenum are known to form a continuous series of solid solutions.576 The continuous solubility was also confirmed by Kornilov and Polyakova,7,8 who also observed a minimum melting point at 22 at. pct Mo and 2345°C. The phase diagram investigations of the Nb-C system by Storms and Krikorian9 and Kimura and Sasaki10 were recently supplemented by Rudy et al.11,12 The system contains a high-melting monocarbide with the B1 structure, Table I, and a subcarbide, Nb2C, which exists in at least two different states of sublattice order at low temperatures47"-&apos;3 and a disordered state above approximately 2500°C.11,12 The melting-point measurements by Rudy et al .11,14 are in close confirmation of the data by Kimura and Sasaki.10 The rather complex phase relationships in the Mo-C system were only recently Clarified.15,18 The system is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, MozC, ? MoC1-x and a Mol-,, Table I, of which only Mo2C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. "INTRODUCTION During the recent war attention was directed to prevent the destruction of American industries by sabotage. By Executive order of Lay 19, 1942, the Bureau of Mines was required to conduct investigations and make recommendations that would prevent loss of production of essential war minerals. The Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Lines was able to extend its activities with minimum loss of time to include security surveys of the important mineral facilities in the United States.A Mineral Production Security Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch with funds appropriated for that purpose by Congress in April 1942. From July 1942 to July 1945 engineers of this division, under the direction of D. Harrington, Chief, Health and Safety Branch, and J. J. Forbes, Chief, Mineral Production and Security Division, conducted investigations of 1,560 metallic and nonmetallic mines and associated facilities in accordance with the requirements of the Executive order.PURPOSEAn analysis of losses in the production of minerals shows that failure or destruction of equipment either from deliberate or accidental causes produces essentially the same result. Maximum production is insured by the prevention of subversive activities, fires, and industrial accidents."

Os custos com reparos e substituições de peças, que são submetidas a trabalhos que proporcionam desgastes dos mesmos significam elevadíssimos gastos para as empresas. Os testes de campo geralmente são caros, além de necessitarem de um longo tempo para serem completados. A partir do momento que se notou a necessidade do desenvolvimento de materiais com maiores resistências ao desgaste começou a ser feitas várias pesquisas na área de desgaste abrasivo. De acordo com trabalhos realizados, pode-se concluir que existe uma grande variedade de parâmetros que influenciam os mecanismos de desgaste de maneira geral. Neste trabalho estudou-se o coeficiente de atrito bem como a resistência ao desgaste por abrasão em dois tipos de materiais, sendo uma amostra com revestimento de níquel e uma amostra revestida com liga binária de níquel com 7,3% de cobalto. O enfoque principal foi centrado na taxa de desgaste por abrasão, caracterizado pelo atrito de partículas entre dois corpos em contato. Como material abrasivo foi utilizado uma suspensão de diamante com diferentes granulometrias e foram aplicadas cargas diferentes, totalizando oito ensaios. Nestes, foi possível observar que maiores desgastes estão diretamente relacionados com material de maior dureza, abrasivo de maior granulometria e menor carga aplicada.

Deep level block caving as a mining method is becoming more popular due to the fact that it is the lowest cost per ton underground extraction system. However, many block caves do not achieve their full potential due to draw horizon instability. In this paper five design rules are given to overcome this problem. The design rules described are applicable for slusher and trackless block caves where the operational depths exceed 500 metres.

Due to the depletion of copper ore with high-grade and low impurity contents, the raw materials for copper smelting exhibit low copper contents and high impurities. High-impurity elements lead to the poor performance of the final copper product; thus, the removal of impurity elements during the oxygen-enriched copper smelting process is crucial. In this study, based on the production of high-grade matte, the occurrence states of impurity elements (such as As, Pb, and Zn) are analyzed in the input and output materials of the oxygen-enriched smelting process, and the phase transformation mechanisms of impurity elements are revealed during the oxygen-enriched smelting process. The effects of temperature, Fe/SiO2 ratio and oxygen concentration on the distribution behaviors of impurity elements in dust, slag and matte and the removal rates of impurity elements in matte are clarified. The results show that the impurity elements mainly exist as As4, As4S4, As2O3, Pb, PbS, PbO, Zn and ZnS in dust, as FeAsO4, As2O3, FeAsS, PbSiO3, Zn2SiO4 and ZnFe2O4 in slag, and as As, FeAsS, PbS, PbO and ZnS in matte. High smelting temperature, low Fe/SiO2 ratio and low oxygen concentration are beneficial for improving the matte grade and the removal rates of impurity elements Pb and Zn in matte. Low smelting temperature, low Fe/SiO2 ratio and high oxygen concentration are beneficial for removing impurity element As in matte.

"A 2D finite element modelling (FEM), based on pure Lagrangian approach, is developed for studying the serrated chip formation during high speed machining (HSM) of 7075-T651 alloy. The solution was achieved using a commercial software package, ABAQUS/Explicit v6.13. The Johnson-Cooke (JC) constitutive equation is used to describe the work material behaviour. Moreover, the JC damage equation is implemented into the FEM to take into account for the shear localization during the serrated chip formation. Modified Coulomb friction model has been used to characterize the sliding/sticking effects on the tool-chip interface with the friction coefficient and shear flow stress determined by force calibration and machining data, respectively. The proposed FEM is validated using experimental data obtained in HSM of 7075-T651. The FEM was able to predict accurately serrated chip morphology. The intensity of chip segmentation was found to increase with cutting speed.INTRODUCTIONHigh speed machining (HSM) is one of the most used processes for manufacturing aircraft parts with aluminum alloys. For aluminum alloys, the use of HSM increases metal removal rate and reduces the formation of built up edges and burrs. However, it was found that serrated (also named segmented or sawtooth chip) and discontinuous chips can be produced during HSM of some high strength aluminum alloys, such as 7075-T6 alloy (Rao & Shin, 2001). Many parameters were found to affect the segmented/discontinuous chip formation during the machining of aluminum alloys.There are two cases in which the serrated chip can forms: the first is when machining hardened materials (Morehead, Huang, & Luo, 2007), and the second, when machining ductile materials with a cutting speed higher than a critical value (Barry & Byrne, 2002). Different theories and models were developed in order to explain the formation mechanism of such kind of chips. According to Astakhov (2006), the segmented chip formation is attributed to variations in stress and plastic deformation states, and resulting temperatures on the cutting zone. Liyao et al. (2013) stated that the segmented chip formation was mainly attributable to adiabatic shear instability/catastrophic strain localization. Others (Vyas & Shaw, 1999) suggest that the fracture/crack propagation mechanism is at the root of chip generation."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, investigated the erosive-wear properties of seven commercial alloys with potential applications as valves for coal-conversion plants. A dry particle, jet-erosion apparatus was used to determine the wear of seven materials: 316 and 440-C stainless steels, K-68, K-701, and K-801 cemented tungsten carbides, HC-250 white cast iron, and Haynes 6B. The alumina abrasive entrained in the nitrogen gas jet had particle sizes of 27 or 50 µm, the abrasive velocities were 55 to 170 m/s, and the particle impingement angles were 15° to 90°. The maximum specific wear for ductile materials was found to occur at impingement angles of 15° to 30°, and the minimum specific wear occurred at 60° to 90°. For the brittle materials, maximum specific wear occurred at impingement angles of 50° to 85° and minimum specific wear was at the lowest angles. As the velocity and erosive particle size increased, the specific wear increased. The specific wear was related to the velocity by the power function WocAVn, where n was 1.8 to 3.9 for ductile materials and 1.8 to 3.6 for brittle materials.

In order to be most effective in its application and availability, this information needs to be collected in programmes with defined objectives and deadlines. Applied Geology Associates have established a methodology to facilitate the structured collection of environmental data, which provides for the diverse needs of both engineering design and applications for statutory and non-statutory approvals. Principal aspects of this methodology are the scope, timing and management of the environmental studies within the overall project planning framework.

"Two in vitro systems are being developed to model initial stages in the interaction of respired dusts with the acinar region of the lung. Incubation of quartz and kaolin with dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, suppresses the prompt C)1otoxicity of both dusts as measured by in vitro enzyme release from pulmonary macrophages or assay by erythrocyte hemolysis. Additional data is presented to quantitate the detoxification of quartz and kaolin by dipalmitoyl lecithin. Subsequent incubation of lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase enzymes results in partial to complete restoration of the assayed cytotoxic potentials, dependent on the lipase activity applied, the incubation time, and the mineral. Restored cytotoxic potential is due to removal of the prophylactic lecithin surface coating and/or due to residual lysolecithin which is produced by the partial enzymatic digestion of lecithin. Data is presented on the contribution of each mechanism to the restored toxicity. Again, this is dependent on the mineral used, the lipase activity applied, and digestion time. Additionally, a system is under development to challenge pulmonary macrophages in culture with native and surfactant treated dusts. A preliminary test of the dipalmitoyl lecithin - quartz rabbit pulmonary macrophage system is presented to illustrate the method.IntroductionRespirable quartz dust exposure is known to cause librotic lung disease; respirable clay dust exposure is less likely to do so as indicated by epidemiologic data on occupational exposures and by animal model studiesP·7) The hypothesis that damage to pulmonary macrophages in the acinar region of the lung by respired dusts is an early event in the disease process requires consideration because kaolin clay and quartz dusts are comparably cytotoxic to pulmonary macrophages in vitro.(3•9)"

C. W. MERRILL*-Mr. Hughes&apos; paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably, a matter of vital interest.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on substitute brazing filler alloys with properties similar to those of silver filler alloys in an effort to conserve silver and reduce hazards from cadmium emissions. Experimental work was conducted first on the commercial silver brazing alloys BAg-I, BAg-la, BAg-2, and BAg-3 to establish criteria for evalu-ating the substitute alloys. Properties investigated included the wettability of copper, brass, and steel substrates, and the strength of joints made with the filler alloys. A series of experimental alloys containing 50 to 60 pct Cu, 20 to 28 pct Mn, and 17 to 30 pct Zn was prepared and evaluated, together with Cu-Mn-Zn alloys with 5 pct Pb or 2 pct Ni. Wetting properties and joint strengths were not as good as those for silver filler alloys, and the high application temperatures reduced the copper and brass base metal strengths. However, experimental alloys containing 70 pct Cu, 15 to 20 pct Mn, and 10 to 16 pct Sn had wetting and strength properties approaching those of the silver filler alloys. The application temperatures for these alloys were high-er than those for silver fillers, but not as high as those for the Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. With the Cu-Mn-Sn alloy fillers, copper alloy joint members are less deteriorated by recrystallization than when applying Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. The Cu-Mn-Sn system has potential for further devel-opment as a substitute brazing alloy system, particularly if the melting temperature can be reduced by the addition of other elements without decreasing the ductility and wetting.

The results of field experiments on wells which required stimulation indicated that engineered well-completions will cause an increase in ultimate recovery at reduced costs. Techniques and tools have been developed which can be used to establish well conditions most conducive to successful stimulation. Cementing, perforating and treating are bound together so completely that the success of one phase is completely dependent on the .effectiveness of the preceding phase. A method of determining the efficiency or effectiveness of any given well-stimulation treatment has been derived. Pressure behaviour during a treatment can be analyzed to yield the total percentage of the formation which has been treated.

A Nere record of Emmons&apos;s professional career would very inadequately represent the man. That he was eminent mc know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly ~vholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable. Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew .one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son of Xathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Frankliri after an ancestor who was of the sarne family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degrcc of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the fieole Impkriale des Mines at Paris, Elie de Beaumont arid Daubrke being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States government. A pyrometallurgical process for recovering manganese from open-hearth furnace slags or low-grade manganiferous iron ores is described. The slag or ore is smelted in a blast furnace to produce spiegeleisen; the speigeleisen is then blown with air in a basic converter to give an oxide slag. This slag product contains 60 to 75 percent manganous oxide and may be considered a synthetic manganese ore. In the smelting operations coke rates for five test periods ranged from 3,255 to 4,130 lb per ton of spiegeleisen. The recovery of manganese in the spiegeleisen varied from 60 to 76 percent. Recovery increased to 83 percent when the open-hearth slag feed to the blast furnace was diluted with a high-? grade iron ore sinter to facilitate smelting. In blowing the spiegeleisen a cyclic procedure was developed that gave nearly 90 percent recovery of manganese in the slag product (synthetic ore) yet prevented excessive contamination of the slag by phosphorus and iron. The overall recovery of manganese was about 75 percent when iron ore sinter was used with the open-hearth slag in the smelting step. The metal remaining after oxidizing the manganese from the spiegeleisen contained approximately 3.5 percent phosphorus. It was refined in a basic converter by blowing with air in the presence of lime" A high--grade iron and a basic phosphate slag were produced.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.
