ANDROS INCORPORATED has designed, manufactured and delivered four handheld C02 DETECTORS and three handheld CH4 DETECTORS. These instruments are for in-mine safety use. The DETECTORS incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas. This eliminates the need for daily calibration. This stability and the miniature design (2.5" x 4.5" x 4.5"; 4.5 lbs) of the C02/CH4 DETECTORS provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. This report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezoceramic-driven Helmholtz resonator.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of various bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids on respiratory burst activity of alveolar macrophages and to characterize the interaction of these drugs with alveolar phagocytes. BBIQ alkaloids were chosen for study because they exhibit a wide range of antifibrotic potencies in a rat model, with tetrandrine being very effective and tubocurarine being ineffective. These drugs inhibited zymosan-stimulated oxygen consumption with a potency sequence of tetrandrine (IT) = fangchinoline (FA) > berbamine (BE) ., cepharanthine (CE) "" cycleanine (CY} ~ tubocurarine (TU). This inhibition of respiratory burst activity could not be attributed to a drug-induced decline in the ATP content of these pneumocytes. Drug binding to alveolar macrophages was directly dependent on temperature and drug concentration. The sequence for binding capacity was FA > TT = BE = CY > CE ~ TU. Therefore, there was no simple relationship between binding capacity and inhibitory potency. Binding capacity was not related to lipophilicity of these alkaloids. In addition, tetrandrine failed to bind to metabolically dead cells or sonicated macrophage preparations. These data suggest that the interaction of BBIQ alkaloids with phagocytes is not simply nonspecific binding to membrane lipids. Alteration of the cytoskeletal system with vinblastine, taxol, or cytochalasin B decreased tetrandrine binding by approximately 33% when adtkd separately and by 93% when added jointly. Pre-exposure of alveolar macrophages to stimulants increased the ability of BBIQ alkaloids to inhibit both oxygen consumption and superoxide release. These data suggest that the mechanism by which BBIQ alkaloids inhibit activation of phagocytes involves microtubules and bules and microfilaments. Pre-exposure of macrophages to stimulants would change the conformation of cytoskeletal components and may make these structures more susceptible to drug interaction.

Experimental Mine, Val d'Or, Quebec, Experiments on the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives have been conducted in a 1 m3 explosion chamber. The explosives tested are ANFO, emulsion, aluminized emulsion and Detasheet. By controlling the composition of the ANFO and the emulsion explosive the oxygen balance could be changed in order to identify the dominant factors in the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives. Experimental results, combined with theoretical calculations, show that the temperature of the detonation products is the most important parameter in the ignition of the dust cloud while the combustible detonation products are of secondary importance in the case of non-aluminized mining explosives. In the case of aluminized explosives and explosives having very negative oxygen balance the ignition of the dust cloud is assisted by the large amount of combustible detonation products.

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history is being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations - both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage.   Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point; they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history.   Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products.   Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

"Abstract: This paper describes the current state-of-practice for the design of cast-in-place drilled shafts in granular soils under axial loading, addressing recent advances that take into account the surrounding soil grain size distribution and their behavior. The important role of the gravel content in the shaft response under axial loading is emphasized. Usual design approaches in Mexico are described, and the results of load tests from different sources are discussed. The analysis emphasizes the primary contribution of the lateral area of shafts to their axial bearing capacity, raising doubts regarding the common local idea of “point bearing shafts”. Finally, some lines of research are noted to permit advances in the important field of deep foundations. 1 INTRODUCTIONIn Mexico, cast-in-place drilled shaft foundations are widely used to support various structures in the west area of Mexico City, where alluvial and volcanic deposits predominate. Deep foundations are also used in modern construction works located in other major cities of Mexico. In fact, the use of drilled shafts for tall buildings and overpasses in the center of Guadalajara as well as in transportation works related to the Metro and roadways in Monterrey is well known. It is worth mentioning that these same structures have been applied in road bridges throughout the country.Procedures for pile construction in Mexico have been basically the same for the past 20 years (Paniagua et al., 2005); however, modern equipment has been incorporated into the construction industry, including innovations in sludge-drilling technology, control and the quality of the castings. In addition, novel and efficient procedures such as construction with continuous auger displacement piles have been implemented (Auger Cast in Place, ACP) and have begun to be used locally with success (Schmitter and Paulin, 2006).However, it can be argued that the technological developments that have resulted in more efficient construction procedures have not included a breakthrough in the full understanding of the phenomena or basic mechanisms of load transfer from piles to the surrounding subsoil and therefore in supported, tested and practical design methods. This is particularly true when seeking to determine the unit side shear strength of shafts drilled in granular media with gravels, where it has been observed that the commonly used calculations developed for sands underestimate the load-bearing capacity by frictionin a most important way. Due to the above reasons, it seemed appropriate to present in this paper a review of the current stateof- practice in Mexico for the design of cast-in-place drilled shafts, particularly in granular media, highlighting some recent advances and research that takes into account the grain size distribution and behavior of granular soil."

This paper, describing the various mining methods and practices at Britannia mines, Britannia Beach, British Columbia, is one of a series covering mining practices, methods, and costs in the mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Britannia property has been operated continuously for 30 years, and in that time many diverse methods have been used in exploiting the various types of orebodies worked. Under normal conditions mining methods include surface gloryholes, shrinkage stoping, shrinkage with powder drifts for primary breaking, horizontal cut-and-fill, horizontal and inclined square-setting, and timbered and open rills, the three latter systems being combined with close filling. The Britannia method of mining, a large-scale retreating shrinkage system usually combined with powder drifts for primary breaking, has been developed and applied here very successfully. Each block of ground as developed is studied as a separate problem, and the mining method, or combination of methods best adapted to the work in hand is applied thereto. Operating at, capacity, the series of mines produces 7,000 tons of ore per day.

"The Quintette Coal Limited property is located in the north east coal area of British Columbia. A basic agreement with the Japanese steel industry was ex ecuted on January 27, 1981 for the sale of 69.5 million tonnes of Quintette metallurgical coal over a 14.5-year period. This contract period can be extended by Jive years by mutual agree ment. Sale agreements have also been signed for the sale of 19.4 million tonnes of oxidized coal over a 15-year period. Work started on site development in the late summer of 1981, and at present, two of the four eventual pits-the McConkey and Frame-are under development. The pits are currently in a pres/ripping phase. These pits are notable for the stripping volumes that have to be removed from relatively small pit areas. in order to provide for the required detailed rapid short-range planning of these pits, engineering will be computerized, as will the truck dispatch system. The mining area lies 21.1 km from the plant site by road and the transport of raw coal LO the plant is by means of a highspeed conveyor system which has a total length of 13.4 km with a vertical drop of 740 m. The surface plant facility was designed on a modularized basis to facilitate maintenance, and is designed to enable the use ofgravity flow ofraw coal and heavy media in the plant to minimize the use of pumps. The construction of the plant and mine site facilities is on-going, and the first coal production is scheduled for early December 1983. Introduction Quintette Coal Limited is a Canadian company incorporated in the province of British Columbia in 1971. Denison Mines Limited is the manager of Quintette's activities. Equity in Quintette Coal Limited is held by several shareholders, with interests as follows: Denison Mines 'Limited, 500Jo; Charbonnages de France International S.A., 120Jo; and Japanese interest, 38%. The project will develop almost 120 million tonnes of coal for marketing during its first 20 years of production. All of the planned production tonnage has been committed to Japanese markets. Most of the coal will be metallurgical grade, and the remainder will be a high-quality thermal coal. The Mcconkey and Frame pits, which will initially provide the mine's production, will commence production in early December 1983 and will, in 1985, reach the full annual production of 5 million tonnes clean metallurgical coal and 1,380,000 tonnes of clean thermal coal."

When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

ZJ 201 (modified starch) is a non-toxic, odorless, and biodegradable polymeric depressant, which selectively depressed galena in batch flotation tests while chalcopyrite was not significantly affected. In a plant trial, copper-lead separation was successful for the first time without using dichromate. Moreover, the plant process could be changed to sequential Cu-Pb flotation using ZJ 201 for higher grade lead concentrate. A copper concentrate was obtained with a Cu grade of 24.91% and a Pb grade of 5.11%, which recovered 76.6% of the copper from the original ore; a lead concentrate was also obtained with a Pb grade of 21.90% and a Cu grade of 5.31%, which recovered 52.6% of the lead. In addition to the effective copper-lead separation observed in the plant trial, another improvement observed is that gold was recovered mostly in copper concentrate, which could be sold for higher prices. Au grade reached 230.64 g/t, and its recovery reached 65.8% in the copper concentrate. Au grade in lead concentrate was only 18.90 g/t.

Rapid depletion of our known mineral resources has stimulated exploration for new mineral deposit. Abandoned mines or prospects may prove to be commercial in today's economy. Often it is necessary to revaluate such properties. Some of these may be inaccessible because of caving of flooding. Many, however, remain in good condition, except that over the years the air in the workings has become depleted of oxygen. Each year the Bureau of Mines receives numerous requests for aid in entering old mines, the air in which is incapable of supporting life. Requests of many individuals who wish to examine or explore-such places with the help, of the Bureau's self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus have been denied because of the hazards involved in the use of this equipment for such purposes. The distance to be traveled in irrespirable gases may be too great for safety; under favorable conditions, a round trip of 2,000 feet from fresh air is the maximum distance that may be traveled.3/ The use of such equipment is hazardous unless a team of at least 5 men thoroughly experienced in its use is provided; and when extensive traveling from. a fresh-air base is required, a reserve team should be provided.3/ Usually, the apparatus is requested for use in exploring workings having only one surface connection, as mines having more than one opening usually are more easily ventilated;,and in some natural ventilation is sufficient or can be made so by cleaning out obstructed openings.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive study of the Kanab, Kolob, Kaiparowits, and Harmony coalfields of southwestern Utah to obtain additional information and to determine the potentials of these coalfields as sources of energy for steam-electric power-generating plants. Field examinations were made to ascertain the geologic structure and the stratigraphy of the coalfields, the accessibility of the coal-bearing strata, and the general nature of the coal-bearing strata and the terrain. Many mines, both active and abandoned, were examined, and key personnel in the coal industry in the area were consulted. Available analyses of southwestern Utah coals were compiled, and tentative conclusions regarding the rank and quality of the coals were drawn. Coals have been classified by rank according to the standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1964. The Parr formula for moist, mineral-matter-free British thermal units has been used to calculate the rank of each sample, except as otherwise noted. Water resources related to the areas of the coal reserves also were investigated. Existing literature and maps pertaining to the geology of the areas were reviewed. Production potentials of the coalfields and economic conditions affecting the possible utilization of the coal reserves as sources of energy for steam-powered electricity-generating plants were investigated and analyzed. The data obtained and the conclusions reached as a result of this study are included in this document. The total reserves of subbituminous A and high-volatile bituminous C coals in the fields of southwestern Utah are estimated to be at least 8 billion short tons at depths generally less than 2,000 feet. It appears likely that this estimate will be increased as additional data are made available through exploration and other investigations. Sufficient coal is available in four southwestern Utah counties to supply three or four large steam-electric plants. If the States involved grant water rights to companies planning to build steam-electric plants, the cost of producing power with coal might be attractive and might justify the construction of one or more of these plants.

On the basic of analysis on the amounts and main elements of municipal solid waste of Changsha City, the sanitation landfill, incineration, composting, reclamation and utilization technology of household waste were compared specifically in this paper. Based on the concrete conditions of Changsha City, the paper has proposed a disposal proposal combined with reclamation and landfill of municipal solid waste of Changsha City, and the environmental benefit, social benefit and economical benefit of the prepared processing routes were also analyzed in the paper.

This report presents a design and cost investigation for several alternative versions of a field-worthy mining machine-mounted respirable dust monitor. Three main design variations are considered: (a) light scattering sensing, (b) Beta-filter tape sensing, and (c) a combination of the two preceeding methods. Eventual instrument production coats as a function of design complexity are tabulated. Cost estimates for the development and field testing of field-worthy prototypes are also presented. A general discussion on the technical aspects of these design alternatives is included following a modular-hierarchical approach of progressive complexity. The technical background to this report has been provided by the experience and results derived from the work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contracts Nos. H0166097 and H0377092.

In December 2010, a trial of borehole radar technology was conducted to test the usefulness of the technique in better refining the position and geometry of narrow vein orebodies away from the primary data sources of drilling and mapping of development excavations. This paper summarises the reasons why the technique was applied, describes the testing methods selected and summarises the outcomes of the trial.Poor reconciliations of recovered metal from a section of an orebody at Jundee mine site, Western Australia, led to an investigation that identified insufficient understanding of the geometry of a narrow vein orebody as a potential cause. This orebody was situated between mapped development excavations and away from surrounding drill holes. Borehole radar was identified as a possible technique that could supply information on vein location and continuity away from other data sources allowing more accurate orebody modelling and subsequent stope optimisation.A borehole radar instrument (10 - 100 MHz frequency) was inserted into pairs of purpose-drilled boreholes on either side of relatively well-constrained mineralisation and the radar reflection data was collected. This process was repeated in five locations across the mine to represent the most common geological settings, lithologies and orebody varieties encountered at Jundee to determine the suitability of applying the technique in each of these settings. Collected, processed and interpreted radar data was compared to other geology data collected independently for verification and interpretation.Conclusions drawn from the analysis were that the technique could effectively determine the following features of the mineralised veins in the majority of test environments: geometry of veins, magnitude of offsets where structures intersect and orientations of planar structures with short strike length. The technique was very useful in selecting the appropriate structural interpretation where available data could lead to multiple, equally likely, interpretations.CITATION:Kemp, C and Morgan, G, 2012. An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.

Thorium and cerium are two of the group of elements known as "rare earth metals," and are obtained from the mineral monazite. Previous to the employment of thorium and cerium in incandescent gas mantles these elements were nothing more than laboratory curiosities, as the rest of the rare-earth metals are to-day. The most important salts of these rare earths are the nitrates. In the manufacture of gas mantles, thorium nitrate is the principal ingredient and forms prom 92 to 99 per cent of the impregnating material; the other 1 or 2 per cent is largely cerium nitrate and is quite as necessary, for without it there would be little luminosity to the mantle when in use. When the mantle is "burned off," the nitrates are changed to oxides. The monazite used as a source of thoria contains from 6 to 9 per cent of thorium oxide (Th02) and 24 to 32 per cent of cerium oxide (Ce203). As only the thoria and a very small hart of the ceria from the monazite could be used in gas-mantle manufacture, for a time the residues consisting mostly of ceria with somewhat smaller quantities of other rare earths found no commercial application. Later, however, they came to be utilized in several ways, the most important being: (1) the manufacture of cored flaming arc carbons, a great, irmprovement over the plain arc carbons used in electric lighting; (2) cerium metal used in the manufacture of pyrophoric or sparking alloys or "flints" for automatic pocket lighters and miners' lamps; and (3) the production of special kinds of optical and art glass.

Static liquefaction is a geotechnical hazard in mine tailings facilities. Soils that are contractive in shear are susceptible to static liquefaction. Tailings facilities are dynamic structures, typically growing in height each year. Dilative tailings may become contractive under increased effective stress. In this paper we show that Cone Penetration Test (CPT) data can be used to estimate the future state of in-place tailings under changes in effective stress. Susceptibility to static liquefaction is typically evaluated with the CPT by using a clean-sand equivalent normalized cone tip resistance (Qtn,cs) or by estimating the state parameter (?). An alternative approach is to evaluate the soil-state using the yield-stress-ratio (YSR = ?’y/?’v0). If the YSR equals one it is on the normal consolidation line and the soil-state is contractive. YSR values greater than three are typically dense of the critical state line (CSL) and the soil-state is dilative. In this paper we review how to calculate Qtn,cs, ?, and ?’y; and how the YSR can be used to screen for contractive soil behaviour. Unlike Qtn,cs and ?, it is very simple to estimate how the YSR will change due to an increase in overburden stress. This YSR approach was evaluated at three locations that saw increases in overburden of 10 m, 20 m, and 25 m. We show that the ?’y calculations are consistent and the increase in effective stress moves the soil state towards looser soil states. The COALSTAR Project, which operated from November 1981 to December 1982, was a research and development project aimed at providing a reliable and inexpensive means of monitoring various waste site conditions via the GOES satellite system. The GOES system provides data transfer from unattended isolated sites where neither power nor telephone lines exist. The reliability and resolution of the data received while using the satellite link were excellent; however, the site instrumentation gave considerable trouble. The disastrous failure of a large coal waste embankment in 1972 led the Bureau of Mines to undertake a comprehensive program to reduce the likelihood of such an occurence again. Part of this program involved the installation of instruments to monitor the stability of a specially-selected embankment operated by Armco Incorporated near Montcoal, West Virginia. Initially, the instruments were monitored by normal telephone lines and used normal commercial power from the local utility. The project described here was initiated to replace this monitoring system with an unmanned, solar-powered data collection system which transmitted data via satellite to a central computer facility. The satellite data network is the National Earth Satellite Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Knowledge of risks from exposure to hand-arm vibrations is usually presented by clinicians and researchers from a medical and engineering point of view. There is a strong need to develop innovative health promotion programs for exposed workers. Risk perceptions by vibration exposed workers and HAVS (hand-arm vibration syndrome) affected workers are less well known. In 1983, Brubaker demonstrated that 75% of studied fellers thought that whitening of the fingers was part of the job and/or an unrelated nuisance, while only 25% believed it was a disease. 1Grounds also showed that even though there were a very high number of forestry workers with white fingers, none considered quitting because of their condition. 2 It seems that many workers hesitate to declare the illness or believe they are less affected than they really are, perhaps from fear of losing their jobs and livelihood. 3 Risk awareness, on the part of exposed workers and their employers, as well as knowledge and acceptance of available preventive solutions are necessary steps before installing adequate preventive measures, whether organizational, behavioral or environmental. Workers need to understand fully the hazards and risks in order to be able to make informed decisions under uncertain conditions.4 Prerequisites include the following: workers knowledge about the risk, their attitude towards it, which in turn, can be influenced by values, needs and interests. Also, knowledge and attitudes towards safety behaviour, organizational or environmental barriers must be taken into account. Our research focuses on these key elements, which help bridge the gap between health promotion research and practice. Methods A descriptive exploratory study is in progress with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations. It uses qualitative methods that include focus group discussions with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations, as well as individual interviews with other key informants (employers, health care professionals). An open-ended questionnaire was developed to collect qualitative data on perceived risks and solutions to prevent or reduce HAVS. Based on an integrated theoretical framework related to known determinants of behavior change, the analysis will focus on the following5: 1) knowledge of health effects, safety, well-being and/or quality of life 2) related beliefs about individual susceptibility and severity of consequences 3) attitude and values related to hand-arm vibration exposure 4) knowledge and attitudes towards exposure reduction, as well as perceptions of barriers and facilitating factors for these measures, in the workplace environment or otherwise.

The severe corrosion of equipment that is caused by the presence of hydrogen sulphide in oil and gas has been described in detail by several authors. Such corrosion, termed "low-temperature hydrogen sulphide corrosion", presents a somewhat different problem from the "high-temperature hydrogen sulphide corrosion" that is encountered in refinery operation and which has been described by various-investigators of refinery corrosion.
