Representation of actual oil yields from sections of the Green River formation oil shales by two types of drill - cutting samples was evaluated . Average oil yields of single sets of mud cuttings from hydraulic rotary drilling in Colorado and gas cuttings from pneumatic rotary drilling in Utah were compared statistically with yields of core samples taken from adjacent holes . Oil yields from gas cuttings were identical to oil yields of core samples . Mud cuttings appeared to represent a section of the formation conservatively , the deficiencies increasing with increasing richness of sample . Because a large amount of the oil - yield data currently available for the Green River formation is based on mud- cutting samples , development of a valid correction method by additional testing is needed .

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of a new 3-yr research program with three primary goals: 1) understanding controls on metal concentrations in the lakes; 2) using mesocosms to test a variety of remediation strategies; and 3) verifying and improving an existing coupled physical-geochemical model with the goal of improving predictions of pit lake water quality. Initial data from two summer surveys in the Main Zone pit lake reveal elevated dissolved metal concentrations (e.g. [Zn] as high as 800 µg/L) present in a two-meter-deep mixed layer, and elevated particulate metal concentrations towards the bottom of the water column. Hydroxide sludge, a byproduct of ARD treatment, is being discharged to the surface waters of the Main Zone pit lake. The sludge sinks rapidly to the lake bottom, leading to deep waters with elevated levels of dissolved O2 and total metals. By contrast, the deep waters of the proximal Waterline pit lake are mildly reducing, manifested by depletion of O2 and elevated levels of dissolved Fe. These reducing conditions have led to elevated levels of As (up to 1500 µg/L) in Waterline pit deep waters. The contrasting behavior of these two pit lakes, as well as the processes controlling metal concentrations in the lakes, will be discussed.

Froth flotation of iron ores is one of the most widely used methods to upgrade iron ore into high-grade concentrates. In recent years, reverse cationic flotation of iron ores has been specifically the subject of several studies. Since quartz is the most common gangue mineral in iron ores, understanding the behaviour of this mineral was the main target of the majority of such studies. However, with the depletion of mineral deposits considered rich and easy to process, it has become more common to find iron ores with complex gangue minerals, which are composed not only of quartz but by a variety of silicates. The mineralogical composition of the ore is an important factor for determining reagents and mineral processing parameters. The mineralogical suite of an ore also presents a paramount role for operational optimisation of any given flotation process. Some studies were performed with different types of amphiboles and other Fe-bearing silicates, for example, but the influence of the mineralogical nature of these silicates in reverse cationic flotation has not been fully explored and will be discussed here. Changes in the traditionally used reagent scheme for reverse cationic flotation, generally including alkaline pH values, polysaccharides as depressant (mainly starches) and primary ether amines and diamines, are expected when dealing with iron ores with complex silicate gangue composition.CITATION:Veloso de Melo, C H, Correa de Araujo, A and Filippov, L O, 2017. The technology of automatically formed roadway without pillars (AFRP) via roof cutting and pressure releasing (RCPR) is a reformatory method for gob-side entry retaining, which automatically creates a roadway by utilizing the fragmenting and expanding properties of rock strata and the mining pressure, to realize a novel technique for coal mining without coal pillars. The Anju Coal Mine is the first kilometer-deep mine where this technology is applied. To conduct a geomechanical model experiment, this research uses the 5307 working face in this mine as its backdrop. The experimental results show that this technology can efficiently decrease the pressure of the AFRP surrounding rock. The roof maximum stress of the AFRP is 21% lower than that of the belt roadway, while the side abutment pressure of the former is 13.4% lower than that of the latter. The comparison of model experiment data and field monitoring data shows that the roof and floor approaching deformations on the roof-cutting side and solid coal side of AFRP differ by 8.8% and 9.6%, respectively. The model experiment results and field monitoring data show good agreement, and the deformation of the AFRP surrounding rock can be successfully managed by this technique. The study’s findings can serve as a guide for using this technology in kilometer-deep coal mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the magnetic susceptibility of minerals as a function of mag-netic field strength to determine how it might affect the potential for high-field magnetic separation as an alternative to other separation technologies. Single-mineral concentrates were prepared from specimens from the same deposit to compare magnetic susceptibilities of minerals that occur together and from specimens from different deposits to compare magnetic susceptibilities of like minerals. A vibrating-sample magnetometer with a superconducting magnet capable of producing a magnetic field of 7.16 x 106 Aim (90 kOe) was used to measure the magnetic moment of the samples. The data were then converted to specific magnetic susceptibility data and plotted as a function of magnetic field strength. Cursory studies were also completed on the effects of iron content and oxidation roasts on magnetic susceptibility in high fields. The results showed that magnetic susceptibility is essentially constant in magnetic fields above those needed to saturate ferromagnetic constituents. Although magnetic susceptibility is influenced by iron content and by thermal treatment, the changes are not large enough to influence separations in fields above 1.59 x 106 Aim (20 kOe).

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

The Asia and the Pacific region has large mineral resources of antimony, barite, bauxite, bismuth, copper, fluorspar, gold, graphite, iron ore, magnesite, mica, rare earths, salt, talc and pyrophyllite, titanium, zinc, and zirconium. The region overall lacks large resources of oil and natural gas, but it has large resources of anthracite and bituminous coal. In terms of exploitation, many minerals, metals, and fuel are produced in significant quantities in the Asia and the Pacific region as shown in table 1. Collectively, the area accounts for a substantial amount of the world production of antimony, barite, bauxite, fluorspar, gold, graphite, ilmenite and rutile, iodine, iron ore, lead, magnesite, manganese, nickel, salt, tin, tungsten, and zinc. Total coal production of the region exceeds 1.6 billion metric tons. The production of bituminous coal accounts for more than 80 % of the total output. China is the region's largest coal producer, with an output of almost 1.1 billion tons. Other major producers are Australia and India. The combined production by Australia, China, and India is more than 1.5 billion tons or 93 % of the area's output. The remainder of the coal output in the region comes from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, the Korean peninsula, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The production of crude oil throughout the Asia and Pacific region is close to 2.4 billion barrels. China and Indonesia together account for 67 % of the total output. The remainder of the output is primarily from Australia, Brunei, India, and Malaysia. Indonesia is the largest producer of natural gas in the region with an output of close to 58 billion cubic meters, followed by Malaysia and Australia with 23 and 22 billion cubic meters, respectively. Other producers in the region of lesser stature by output include Brunei, China, India, and Pakistan.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. "INTRODUCTION The BeVan quartz crystal prospect in the Indian Creek mining district of Lemhi County, west-central Idaho, was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ on July 9, 1943. As quartz crystals possessing peizoelectric properties were on the critical list of strategic war minerals, further exploration of the deposit was recommended. The Bureau of Mines exploration began in December 1943 and continued through January 1944. Additional trenching was completed during May and June 1944. This report presents the data obtained by this exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. During the next five years, there will be a trend toward performing belt cleaner maintenance while the conveyor is in operation. Most mines and industrial sites that use belt conveyors have an in-house safety rule that the belt must be stopped before maintenance work can be performed on any belt-cleaning device. This is a good rule. Most cleaning devices are positioned against the belt with hardware that requires the service technician to reach or climb into the chute to change the cleaning blades. But this simple rule becomes more complicated as production demands require higher conveyor availability and provide fewer conveyor outages. In many cases, today’s conveyors are expected to be available 98% to100% of the time.

In 1887 I proposed slight changes to the classification generally used, for more convenient description of our coal-fields in my report on the statistical history of coal in the States during 1886 for the United States Geological Survey. The 2003 redoubling in power to 68MW on the Polokwane Smelter furnace represented a significant intensification in platinum group metal (PGM) smelting. Combined with onerous ‘green’ PGM concentrate smelting requirements, this yielded conditions unusually corrosive to copper coolers and refractories. This presented unexpected operational and design challenges to reliable crucible operation and maintenance. Combined with specific operational control intervention, development of protective coatings has led to the life of water-cooled copper components improving from 9 to 40 months. The furnace matte endwall was extended in 2010 to address accelerated wear of refractories and the potential risk for contact of copper components by superheated matte. An 18 month planned endwall rebuild cycle has been demonstrated (versus catastrophic failure within 9 months). Finally, benefits including lower energy consumption, improved metal recoveries and higher productivity resulting from operational and in-house design developments will be described, that justify “Celebrating the Mega-scale” in PGM smelting.

Several aspects of coal mine safety-ground system operation are studied. Evaluations of two sophisticated ground-wire monitors are presented, along with a detailed report of development work on a modular ground-wire monitor. A portion of the report covers stray current flow in the safety-ground system, analyzing in detail conditions surrounding the generation of both dc and ac ground wire current. Considerable detail is provided concerning studies of mine ground beds. Additional progress is reported in the development of a. continuous ground-bed monitor, and new techniques are developed for the design of ground beds and their resistance measurement. New methods of accurately measuring electrical parameters of finite layered conducting structures are also reported. The effects of stray currents in ground beds is included. Touch-and step-potentials associated with mining equipment are analyzed, and methods are presented for determining earth voltage gradients around structures contacting earth. Instrumentation to determine gradients easily is suggested. Finally, an extensive effort is described dealing with lightning transients on open-pit coal mine ground systems. The nature of the transients, their expected frequency of occurrence, and the ways in which they damage equipment are analyzed in detail.

An intelligent supervisor using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant has been developed with a structure based on a model of a human operator. It consists of a knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process and a rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of system to supervise the automatic operation of a plant. There has been very significant development in artificial intelligence over the last two decades. Within this development, two approaches can be distinguished, (Winston, 1984). The "model approach," in which the main objective is to understand and model the be¬havior of living systems. The second approach is the "engineering approach." Here, systems capable of performing tasks usually requiring human intelligence are created. As part of this latter approach, knowledge engineering and its main achievement, expert systems, have been developed. Expert systems arose from the need to incorporate the abilities of a human expert in solving realistic problems in which the conventional approach has great difficulties. The first successful applications of expert systems were in medical diagnosis, geophysics, and fault detection. However, since 1971, when Fu (1971; defined intelligent control as the inter action of artificial intelligence and automatic control, some significant developments in the use of artificial intelligence tools for process control have been achieved (Astrom, 1986; Pinto 1988; Fahrenkrog, 1988; and Porter 1987). The modern control theory has made important advances. And, although successful in some applications, it has failed to cope with the practicalities of many industrial processes. As a result, the automatic operation of a plant has been confined to a small region around a normal operating point and to periods without any great disturbance. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of accurate and structured knowledge of the processes involved. Despite this, operators applying their knowledge, experience, and a little intuition, often obtain good results controlling the plant in such situations. Considering the above, the next obvious step is to include similar reasoning capacities in a computational system. The development of such an expert supervisory system prototype applied to a mineral crushing plant is presented. "The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

This Bureau of Mines study assesses the economic significance of the Florida phosphate industry to selected counties in Florida, the State of Florida, and the Nation: it also includes a brief survey of the industry's international impact. Based on forecasts of Florida phosphate production in 1981, and using constant 1977 dollars. estimates are given for 1981 for regional and national output the value of this output, income, and employment created by the phosphate industry in Florida, Federal, Stale, and county tax revenues generated by the State's phosphate industry are also estimated for 1981. The concentrated impact of the phosphate industry on certain areas of Florida and on the State?s regional industries is examined using economic base analysis complimented by an industrial complex approach. The industry's impact at the Stare and national levels is examined through input- output analysis. In addition, an attempt to forecast for 1990 the effects of constraints on phosphate rock mining as a result of economic conditions and other factors is included as an appendix to the report. Also discussed is the phosphate industry's importance to the U.S. balance of trade: U.S. agricultural production. Including forward linkages; the U.S. sulfur industry; and the phosphate industry's importance to the production of fluorine and uranium by- products from fertilizer manufacturing.

A depleted county gravel pit was rehabilitated by contracting an artist to convert it into sculpture, rather than using traditional reclamation methods. The sculptor's ideas were generally implemented as designed, but problems arose because of a faulty survey and severe weather. Public reaction was critical. A design symposium was presented by retaining six artists to prepare designs for varied sites. A public forum was offered and video-documented for broadcast. A new art-reclamation project grew out of this project.

Tae purpose of this paper is to present types of charts adapted to aid in the graphic solution of fan-performance problems of selection and operation, and to urge the adoption of similar charts by the National Association of Fan Manufacturers as standard forms for presenting fan-performance data. As matters now stand, it is difficult for the average engineer to solve such problems because a laree number of variables are involved, and performance data are not presented in a manner that permits their direct application to many problems encountered in practice. The performance of any centrifugal machine is determined not only by the machine itself but also by the fluid-flow system on which it operates. Actual performance of centrifugal fans is therefore e matter of the type, size, and speed of fan, on the one hand, and of the relation of pressure to quantity of flow, as determined by the physical condition of the airway system, on the other.
