This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.

(Eng.)(Rand) INTRODUCTION Stone Age people were living in various parts of South Africa as recent,ly as a thousand years ago, when they were displaced by Iron Age people with a culture developed in the far north. These invaders brought farming, building, and the earliest mining developments to the Transvaal, thus ushering in the beginning of our great mineral heritage. It is of particular interest to record that, up to comparatively recent times, some of these people were excavating iron-bearing shale rocks for their smelting furnaces on the Melville Koppies in J ohannesburg. Although the most recent the iron-smelting furnaces discovered on these koppies is estimated to be some five-hundred years old, it believed that these Iron Age people were driven out, and their settlements destroyed, by Zulu impis only one-hundred-and-fifty years ago.

Water-based epoxy sealants were examined during a 2-year period to deter-mine their effectiveness as barriers to radon release in uranium mines. Radon emanation rates from uranium ore samples were monitored for extended periods in the laboratory before and after sealant application. Reduction of radon flux due to the coating of laboratory samples was approximately 80 percent. Test chambers in a dormant uranium mine were monitored to determine both short and long-term barrier effectiveness. These field studies of the seal-ants indicated radon flux reductions exceeding 50 percent relatively soon after application and nearly 75 percent about 1 year later. An unexpected complication to early monitoring in the form of a large radon emanation increase, believed due to added moisture, is discussed.

Over the last decade more than 62 miles (100 km) of civil transport tunnels were constructed in Sydney, Australia, using the sequential excavation method (SEM). The WestConnex motorway tunnels, each stage of which used over 20 roadheaders to excavate up to 40 tunnel headings, had numerous caverns up to 100 feet (30 m) wide and 82 feet (25 m) high. SEM tunnels in North America typically have far fewer active headings. This paper examines the differences in scope and risk allocation for construction phase services, including comparison of the Permit to Tunnel (PTT) process in Australia and the Required Excavation and Support process in North America.

The devastating failure of Dam I at the Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine near Brumadinho in Brazil on 25th January 2019 left at least 270 people dead or missing. In the immediate aftermath of this event, many mining companies commenced reviews of their tailings and water storage facilities (T&WSFs), and Rio Tinto was no exception. Rio Tinto has an interest in over 250 T&WSFs across 47 sites in 13 countries as owner-operator, as managing JV partner, and through non-managed partnerships and other ownership arrangements; T&WSF experts from Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence visited the sites in order to complete Technical Risk Reviews of each facility. These reviews looked beyond the day-to-day operational aspects of T&WSF management, and the site’s compliance with local regulations and Rio Tinto’s internal D5 Standard – Management of tailings and water storage facilities, in order to provide a strategic, second line of assurance perspective. The reviews focused on design and construction; operational controls; risk control framework; and competencies and capabilities of personnel involved in the design, operation and closure of the facilities. Additional activities were carried out in parallel with these reviews, including the development of a consistent approach to dam break studies; the public disclosure of information on Rio Tinto’s tailings storage facilities and their management; and contribution to external programs such as the initiatives being co-ordinated by the International Committee on Mining and Metals. This paper provides an overview of the tailings and water storage assurance work undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence Tailings Validation Taskforce to date; work that will continue to improve governance and assurance for all of Rio Tinto’s T&WSF.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to review the air and water monitoring requirements of five Federal environmental acts (the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and to compile information on the currently available monitoring instruments. A literature review of the acts and their associated regulations was conducted to determine applicability to the mining industry as well as any air and water monitoring requirements. In addition, an industry search and literature review was performed to assess the instrumentation available to comply with the monitoring regulations. Based on this research, the instruments are classified by general applicability to air, surface water, or ground water monitoring, then catalogued by monitoring parameters. A discussion is provided on recommended and innovative monitoring techniques.

The first century of mining in northern Idaho's Couer d'Alene District will soon he drawing to a close. Like so many other great raining districts, it has been a period accompanied by a rich and colorful history. From its early days as a gold rush camp, the district has evolved into the leading silver producer in the US, but the going has not been easy: early-day labor disputes, the challenge of mining for profit in some of the deepest mines in the Western hemisphere, and the constant search for new reserves at great depths have taken their toll of mines-and miners-along the way. To these traditional mining problems have of late been added the burden of inflationary cost increases, pollution control, and reclamation. A recent visit to the district by MINING ENGINEERING, how ever, revealed that the deep commitment of the operating companies and the quiet competence and vitality of their engineering personnel are key factors in the continued prosperity of the district.

In presenting this paper the author has in view a twofold purpose. In the first place, it is intended to set forth for the benefit of practical mining men some account of the principles underlying the design of tungsten carbide rock bits in the hope that a knowledge of these principles will assist in the successful application of the bits to mine and quarry drilling. Secondly, by evoking discussion, and even controversy, it is hoped that manufacturers and users of these rock bits will be encouraged to contribute to the general knowledge of a subject which to date has been rather lacking in published literature. The author well appreciates that many of the conclusions drawn in this paper are highly controversial, but if the only result is to call forth contradictory testimony from other workers in this field, at least one of his purposes will have been achieved.An attempt will first be made to set forth and examine those characteristics which go to make up an efficient rock bit, and the main factors affecting these characteristics will be discussed. In a paper of this general nature, consideration of any particular aspect must necessarily be rather brief, and there is little opportunity for detailed presentation of test procedures and data. Productivity is improved by increasing the ratio of output to input. In an operating open-pit mine, improving the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME) enables the unit cost of production to be reduced. To optimize HME productivity, the Kolomela open-pit iron ore mine transitioned to an enhanced short-term mine planning (STMP) process that supports the application of a manufacturing-type operating model. At the core of the enhanced STMP process is a focus on integration across the open-pit mining value chain. The interdependencies between mining activities are highlighted and emphasized, thus ensuring that mining activities are synchronized. The improvements related to HME productivity were monitored from 2019 to 2020. The utilization of mining area in the Leeuwfontein pit improved from 71% to 90%, and the blasting frequency reduced by 14% while the average blast size increased by 17%. The distance travelled during shovel relocations between mining phases reduced by 16%, and the lost time associated with drills relocating reduced by 53%. These productivity improvements resulted in an 11% increase in the loading rate of the main waste shovel at Kolomela from 0.9 Mt/month in 2019 to 1.0 Mt/month in 2020. The investigation of mine shafts and underground workings at Leadville, Colo., was started in May 1946 and recessed in November 3, 1946. Thirty-eight shafts and connecting accessible underground workings, comprising about a third of the accessible shafts in the district, were investigated. The Leadville district, a former important producer of lead and zinc, was considered by the Bureau of Mines to be capable of bolstering 'the waning domestic output of .these important metal. Accordingly, the investigation was initiated for the purpose of. .obtaining more definite data on sulfide and oxide reserves, evidence to justify completion of the Leadville drainage tunnel, representative large samples of the complex oxidized and mixed ores for testing to determine methods, beneficiation factual data to be supplied to property owners in order to stimulate production, and to determine the more favorable areas for development by the Bureau.

ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. DURING and after 1949, various groups of British mining engineers came to the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, at Sydney, N .S., to see at first hand the Dosco MINER ( 1). These visits culminated in 1952 with the ordering of four Dosco Miners by the (British) National Coal Board on an experimental basis through their Experimental Expenditure Funds. Others are now on order. The first machine was delivered in February, 1953, and, after slight alterations to suit the different power supply, the machine was made ready to work. Due mainly to the size of the machine, new rules and regulations governing its operation had to be put into effect and it was not until April, 1954, that the machine was put underground. It started to produce in June of that year. The three others were delivered early in 1955. The authors were sent to England by the Dominion Coal Company to install and demonstrate these machines and to work with the Coal Board engineers to- further interest in the machines in the British coal fields .

The uppermost subsoil profiles of the Bangkok plain can be divided into four layers, namely: weathered clay, soft clay, stiff clay, and dense sand layers. The soft Bangkok clay is a normally consolidated marine clay with built-up preconsolidation effects and overlain by a weathered crust. Up to the present, a large number of full-scale tests on excavations and pile foundations has been made by numerous investigators. Based on these results, the available data are reviewed and evaluated. The results show that for test excavations, the excess pore pressures were overpredicted by the existing theories. The vertical and lateral movements in the excavations can be predicted by the bilinear and non-linear finite elements using appropriate modulus values. Relationships among probability of failure, safety factor, and safety margin of the excavation were also obtained. In the case of pile foundations, good agreement between the measured and predicted ultimate pile capacities were obtained for long piles. The adhesion factors ranged from 0.4 to 1.0 while the average skin friction factor was found to be 0.33. The ultimate capacity of the pile was also predicted successfully by using the Dutch cone data. For lateral deflection of piles, Davisson and Gill's theory predicted well in the low deflection zone while Poulos' theory agreed well in the high deflection zone. From the probabilistic analysis of ultimate pile capacity, the probability of failure was related to the central factor of safety. On the recent trip from Vancouver to Calgary with the President, Mr. C. C. Huston, and yourself, I had the opportunity of outlining a plan based on the following: Among the aims of the Institute are, obviously, the fostering of the confraternity of those engaged in the technical and management fields of the mining and petroleum industries. This may be achieved in a number of ways, of which, to me, the interchange of ideas and experience between different parts of Canada and different sections and divisions of the Institute appears to be one of the most important. I think you and the membership as a whole are, and have been, well aware of this. The annual tour of the President .and Secretary, particularly their visits to Branches, shows this to be true. The interchange of ideas through the medium of the BULLETIN also illustrates the point; indeed, most Institute activities are directed along these lines. I am convinced that much more could be accomplished if it became financially possible to do so. Many able and fine men are, I think, willing and anxious to give their time and energy to furthering these phases of Institute activity, but it is unfair to expect them to assume as well the financial obligations involved. Specifically, I would suggest that the following could be done if sufficient funds were available:

LECTURE, it appears, is a discourse that is supposed to be instructive. I am quite sure that you will derive no instruction from what I have to say. I will be satisfied if my remarks provoke thought along one or two mental paths that have not been traveled so fre¬quently as to be devoid of interest. I have no particular message apropos of professional engineers or professional engineering, and any conclusions that I may seem to reach will be purely tentative and incidental. Probably at times you have wondered, in a casual way at least, why so many people who are not, never have been, and never will be engineers, want to use the title. For example, I recently received a communication from a life insurance broker or salesman, whose chaste letterhead bore the legend "Estate Engineer." He was perfectly serious about it, as is also the expert accountant who assumes the imposing name of cost-analysis engineer. Dozens of equally amazing titles might be cited. Then there is that class of individuals who have been engineers, in the true sense of the word; who have gone into some other kind of occupation; but who cling tenaciously to the name engineer, usually prefixing some word or other which at once gives them away by telling what their work really is. For example, we have such pseudomorphs as the management engineer, and the sales engineer. It is quite evident that engineer is a word to conjure with. Evidently both the man who appro¬priates the designation without any justification and the ex-engineer who persists in calling himself an engineer even after he has abandoned engineer-

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

Two case studies are given: the Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, NSW and the South Walker Creek Mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.

The Sally Malay Project is located 120 km north of Halls Creek in the eastern Kimberley region. Since commissioning, ongoing improvements on the plant have resulted in recoveries now greatly exceeding the initial design targets. The continual optimisation endeavours of the Sally Malay metallurgy department included an automation project that was done in close collaboration with Mintek. In this team effort, several problem areas were addressed and the FloatStar advance control system was successfully commissioned to stabilise and optimise the flotation circuit. The remote location of the Kimberley Nickel Mines operation, fly-in, fly-out roster and the current mining boom makes the acquisition of experienced flotation staff difficult. The implementation of an automated flotation control system reduces this burden and contributes to the training of inexperienced staff. This paper illustrates not only the process control improvements achieved as a result of the installation of the FloatStarÖ advanced control system, but also how it has assisted operational personnel with their understanding of the process.

A glance at the map discloses the fact that the Pacific Great Eastern railway either traverses or crosses some of the most important rivers of the province: the Squamish with its branches the Stawamus, Mamquam and Cheakamus; and the Green, Lillooet, Birkenhead, Fraser and Quesnel rivers. Each of these and some of their tributary streams, having their ?sources and upper reaches in the higher altitudes in regions of abundant snowfall, is capable in greater or less degree of furnishing water under suitable heads for the economic production of power. Beginning at its present terminus at Squamish the railway has the only hydro-electric development within its territory among the whole list of streams mentioned. A 225 horsepower installation at the edge of the East branch of the Squamish river, using water from Stawamus river, a branch of the former, under a head of 418 feet, is a modest beginning. Two or three additional sites, where water may be used under somewhat similar heads, may be found on this little stream. Next above Squamish, along the route of the railway, is the Mamquam, a long tributary of the Squamish from the eastern slopes. It has a drainage area of something like 130 square miles with widely varying discharges of from less than 50 to about 14,000 cubic feet per second. The preliminary investigations so far have disclosed no suitable storage sites, so the Mamquam may be regarded as a small continuous power stream - probably less than 1000 horsepower.
