The flotation of quartz, feldspar and alumina was studied as a function of pH when using N-alkyldiamines as collectors. The lengths of alkyl chains of diamines were 8, 9, 10, and 12 carbon atoms. It was found that shorter hydrocarbon chain length of alkyldiamines has stronger tendency to float quartz while the feldspar responded poorly to flotation with these collectors at high pH values. The effect of addition of nonionic surfactant of Brij type, when using dodecadiamine as collector, was investigated. Flotation studies in the absence and in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfonate were carried out. These studies have indicated that sodium dodecylsulfonate, in the concentration studied, functions as strong depressant for feldspar.

Introduction The need to develop accurate predictive hydraulic fracturing simulators arises from the consideration of vertical containment for the fracture. Fracture height growth from a pay zone into adjacent layers has been shown (see Cleary [I]) to depend on three sets of parameters for the different strata: - elastic properties, - closure stress variations, and, -fracturing fluid leak off, and poro-elastic stresses. Qualitative analysis of the effects of these parameters has been reported in the literature. The first effects were described by Van Eekelen, using simple elasticity considerations [2]. The effect of stress variations was described numerically by Simonson and a1. [3] and experimentally by Thiercelin [4]. Effects of back stresses induced by fluid invasion on fracture propagation were considered by Cleary [5]. In order to couple these effects, a numerical code al- lowing the simulation of three dimensional growth of a hydraulically induced fracture has been developed with the ability of representing the effects of heterogeneities on fracture lateral and vertical extension. The model is based on a new variational formulation of the boundary integral representation of three-dimensional elasticity. The fluid flow and elasticity equations are solved using a moving mesh representation which offers enough flexibility to enable the simulation of any closure stress distribution. Simpler models representing fracture height growth (P3DH models) have been developed [6] [7] that approximate the fracture by a series of one dimensional segments, and the limitation of such approaches is examined in this paper. 1 Description of the model 1.1 Fracture Geometry Hydraulic fracturing simulations involve the coupling of solutions to elastic deformations, fluid flow in the fracture, and fluid leak off into the formation. Since the use of direct solution techniques (i,e,,3D finite elements) is prohibitive, the method used in this study is baaed on a boundary integral representation of the 3D elasticity equations. 1.2 3D Models The classical representation of the problem of a fracture in an infinite medium by boundary integrals is [8]: [ ] where u is the unknown displacement field, r n is the traction operator, I? is the fracture surface, and K is the Kelvin tensor of fundamental solutions to the elasticity operator. Lateritization is a surface and near-surface process enhanced by a humid and warm climate and by good drainage. It closely follows the development of the regional landscape. The cyclic landscape development on the Guiana Shield is accompanied by a progressively thicker and more evolved laterite mantle the older, and hence in most instances the higher the planation level. The known, economically interesting bauxite and aluminous laterite eposits of the Shield are restricted to the remnants of the oldest of the Cainozoic planation levels (level I1 and 111).

INTRODUCTION R&D activities are needed, at a minimum, for a company's competitive survival followed in importance by the growth and diversification of the company. For most industrial companies, however, R&D is the business area that has been the most difficult relative to confident long-range financial commitments and effective control and relative to its value as a long-term investment. Investors look not only at the current profitability of the company but increasingly at the plans, actions, and quality of the personnel in position to improve the market position and profitability of an organization. "The strongest predictor of investment value is the degree of innovation of the 'company.' I believe this is true of both strategic planning and R&D activities." R&D is the lifeblood of a company's future. If this basic premise-R&D for survival and growth-is believed to be true, why is it necessary to "Sell R&D in your organization? My personal experience, in a number of organizations, is that R&D budget is perceived as a business element area that could be delayed or reduced to improve the bottom line during difficult business conditions. I believe the following quote speaks volumes about this subject-"There is only one thing I know for certain about research, and that is it costs money-lots of it." -Unnamed, Hard- headed Financial Executive. A business must make money and be profitable in order to maintain and create jobs, pay taxes, cover working capital and costs of goods sold, and most importantly, create value for its shareholders. The foremost element of selling R&D, therefore, is to consistently demonstrate the R&D group's contribution to the bottom line.

Atkinson's resistance square law is the cornerstone equation for traditional expression of energy losses in mine ventilation engineering. But the nomenclature for the various forms of energy losses are often confused for one another, misapplied or misinterpreted. These forms of energy were re-examined from thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic perspectives. Resultant expressions showed that both incompressible and compressible flow regimes in underground mines can easily be accommodated. Given the well-known three major energy forms, which are equivalent to one another but numerically unequal, corresponding equations to Atkinson's (pressure loss) for headloss and workloss were derived. The thermodynamic weight relational resistance ([w] s2/m5) associated with energy per unit weight (headloss) was dimensionalized for the first time. Also, normalized Atkinson-like equations for headlosses and worklosses were derived to ease direct computations in mine ventilation practice.

In Arctic surface mines, frozen ground adds to the complexity of slope stability analysis. The seasonal temperature change may thaw permafrost, and this thawed ground is often unstable. A computer program, GEODYNE, was used to simulate the movement of the thaw front in bare and insulated permafrost slopes. The simulation shows that the insulation can be used on mine slopes to prevent thawing.

The National Italian Regulation concerning environment protection imposes that industrial areas are provided with systems aimed at preventing the circulation of contaminated groundwater. These systems can be static or dynamic and operate basically by intercepting the contaminated flow. Their effectiveness, realization time and costs depend on the intervention type and on the features of the specific site. The selection of the best solution is complex and the results obtained by this selection may be affected by residual risks related to the uncertainty of the hydrogeological and geotechnical characterization of the site. With regard to the industrial area of Portovesme, located in the south of Sardinia, the paper presents the analysis of alternative interventions aimed at the protection of the groundwater. The attention is focused on the evaluation of their effectiveness, impact on environment and, finally, time and costs of construction.

The kimberlites of northern Europe are related with a large crustal block having a northwest-southeast orientation. Kimberlites penetrate the Archean formations of crystalline basement, Late Proterozoic rocks, which are overlapped by Middle Carboniferous and younger deposits. The kimberlites bodies include pipes, dikes and sills of Upper Devonian age. Within the region, rocks of two magmatic series form diamond-bearing kimberlites. Aluminum rocks form a new type of diamond-bearing rock that is not found in other diamond provinces. Kimberlites of this region are characterized by highly developed deuteric alterations, a low content of associate minerals, the presence of two diamond generations and an increased content of jewelry-grade diamonds.

The Kinross DeLamar Mine has been operated for more than 17 years producing precious metals doré from ores, principally silver bearing with associated gold coproducts. In late 1995, the Stone Cabin ore body was commissioned and the site began a phased shift from silver dominance to gold dominance. The Knelson concentrator was selected to remove gold from a portion of the cyclone under- flow stream in the grinding circuit.

"In order to study the removal efficiency of Cu2+ from acid mine drainage by prepared bentonite-steel slag composite particles, adsorption experiment was carried out. The composite particles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis technique (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results show that: the composite particles can release alkali to neutralize the acid of acid mine drainage; the adsorption and chemical precipitation of Cu2+ occurred in the whole reaction process; the removal amount of composite particles on Cu2+ was 9.88 mg/g when the reaction reached equilibrium; the FTIR spectra revealed the existence of surface complexation; the SEM micrographs suggested that the composite particles would continue to adsorb and coagulate Cu2+ after the composite particles surface adsorbing Cu2+ and forming precipitate, namely, there was synergistic reaction of adsorption and coagulation; the XRD patterns further showed the existence of cation exchange and revealed that the states of Cu2+ in the surface of the composite particles was Cu-Si-O mineral phase and CuO(Cu(OH)2) polymerization precipitation. The bentonite-steel slag composite particles which can play a role of adsorption-coagulation synergism are excellent multifunctional green environmental mineral materials to treat acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions.Introduction It is reported (Zuo and He 2013) that with the rapid development of industry, the world demand for mineral resources is increasing, while the problem of mine environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious due to the large amount of mining. The pollution of mine wastewater has become a global problem, in which acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious waste water. It is also reported (Cong and Zhao 2003) that acid mine drainage containing high concentrations of heavy metals and having low pH value, causing serious negative influence to the mining production and ecological environment. Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental pollution to the mining industry. In recent years, it has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad."

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

As part of the Unconventional Gas Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we are developing a model that allows for time-dependent tracking of the fluid front and flow pressures during the quasi-static or dynamic fracturing of jointed rocks. Application of the model is directed towards both short fast fractures (as in tailored pulse loading) and long hydraulically induced fractures (massive hydraulic fracturing). The thrust of this research is to determine crack extension characteristics due to specific joint systems and fluid properties and to correlate pumping records with crack behavior in jointed systems.

Cumulophyric feldspars, of varying morphology, carry myrmekitic quartz interstitially between microperthitic feldspar lamellae. The size, coarseness, and morphology of these crystals, together with concordant foliation features constitutes evidence that they are a product of primary crystallization, formed prior to eruption from a vent. These crystals occur preferentially along 2 - 5 mm thick tan, vesicular to compressed alteration bands intercalated with more densely welded light grey bands. In perlite with quartz at or below a 0.1% threshold, megascopic feldspars are less than 1%. Perlite with quartz above this level has megascopic feldspar concentrations >3%, typically in the 5-20% range.

The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-controlled, continuous-mining machines and extended cuts to depths of 12 m (40 ft) or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by more than 435 mines, can create additional worker safety hazards. To address the ground-control-related safety hazards, a combination of statistical analysis and numerical modeling was used. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling was completed to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining. This paper describes the results of these studies and their impacts on the safety of extended-cut mining.

INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1). The liners are the most important part in the SAG mill operation. Hence, the liners and their design parameters are primarily studied to see its effect on SAG mill operations. Effective liner designs are directed to reduce downtimes, which is needed for the replacement of worn liners. There exists constant chance of improvement in the capacity of mill by studying the effect of liner design on the charge motion inside the mill. This need is satisfied by three-dimensional discrete element code "Millsoft", which uses Discrete Element Method (DEM) to analyze the motion of charge. This simulation of SAG mill keeps track of all the moving bodies like ball and rock and observes its interaction with liners and lifters. The recent work done on this software helps generating mill to more reality by putting conical wall at feed and discharge end, over the earlier flat walls. Millsoft is an effective tool to watch the change in the motion of the charge due to different types of lifter bars and different design parameters. It was concluded that by simply increasing chord length between the lifters and increasing the face angle of the lifters, capacity of the mill could be increased. On the other hand, this software can also be used to get power draft at the respective mill design.

Mina Maria is a high-grade, underground copper mine located in the Cananea district of Sonora, Mexico. The ore body is a massive sulfide breccia located in mountainous terrain. A major highway and an electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface ore body. The mine is operated by Minera Maria SA de CV, a joint venture company that is 51 % owned by Empresas Frisco SA de CV and 49% by Cominco Resources International Ltd. Empresas Frisco is the operating partner. Production began in October 1990. The mining method used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner and a single-boom, hydraulic jumbo mine the ore. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation. The Maria deposit is located about 40 km (25 miles) south of the Sonora-Arizona border and 11km (7 miles) northwest the city of Cananea and the Cananea Mine. The mine portal, at an elevation of 1780m (5840 ft), is on the east side of an important drainage divide. The mill site is situated about 800 m (2625 ft) northwest of the mine on the northwest side of the drainage divide where the drainage is more favorable. Its elevation is 1860 m (6100 ft) (Fig. 1).
