The Williams Mine mines and mills 6000 t/d (6600 stp’d) of gold ore using SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, electrowinning and refining. Electrowinning, high-pressure cathode washing, filtering, retorting and refining are based around the use of knitted stainless steel mesh cathodes. Their primary advantage over conventional steel wool cathodes is that electrowon gold can be washed off and the cathode can then be reused. Typically, the knitted cathodes have a useful life of up to 15 months. Gold production of up to15 t/month (50,000 oz/month) is easily processed with this system. Presented is a description of this operation, including a review of the equipment and performance data.

Over the years, Alabama's coal industry has generated, during mining and cleaning operations, about 150 million st of fine waste coal, with this total increasing at a rate of 2 million stpy. Reclamation of the fine-size wastes (containing 20% - 60% clean coal by weight) provides, free of charge, mined and crushed feed stocks for coal recovery. Also, the removal or recovery of pyrite from the tailings should eliminate a major source of acid-water pollution. Tests were made on the impounded wastes and current plant discharges to recover the coal fraction by sizing, gravity and flotation techniques. Gravity separation of the +100-mesh material produced commercial-grade coal averaging 7.6% ash, 0.8% sulfur and 13,471 Btu/lb. However, the coal yield, at about 31 % - 56%, was relatively low. Froth flotation, using mechanical and froth column methods, gave similar coal products at much higher coal recovery rates of 87% - 93%. This coal analyzed 10% ash and 1.1% sulfur.

Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) was used to determine the-surface characteristics of products from operating Pb-Zn-Cu concentrators on the New Lead Belt of southeast Missouri and pure galena and sphalerite samples treated-with flotation reagents in concentrations similar to those used in the mills. The emphasis was on the action of surface modifiers such as Na2Cr207, starch, SO2, CuSO4 and NaCN in sphalerite flotation and in the galena-chalcopyrite separation. The objective of the investigation was to monitor the relative oxidation states of the mineral and reagent constituents and correlate these surface concentrations and oxidation states with flotation theory and practice. ESCA was able to follow the action of all the modifiers except NaCN. The existence of PbCrO4 on the surface of galena conditioned with Na2Cr207 was verified. The Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 scavenger concentrate was found to be significantly more oxidized than the Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 rougher concentrate. ESCA was found to be most useful for investigating the actions of modifiers rather than collectors due to the large amounts of sulfur and background carbon already present on the mineral surfaces. After calibration for the particular chemical system of interest, ESCA can yield semi-quantitative analyses of the oxidation states of many elements (except hydrogen, and helium) present in the outer 10 to 25 A of a sulfide mineral surface.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm's Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

Kidston Gold Mines is a 14 000 tonnes per day rated operation located 280 kilometers west of Townsville in Queensland. The principle shareholder is Placer Development Limited. Kidston's orebody consists of 44.2 million tonnes graded at 1.79 g/t gold and 2.22 g/t silver. Production commenced in January, 1985, and despite a number of control, mechanical and electrical problems, each month has seen a steady improvement in plant performance to a current level of over ninety percent rated capacity.

This paper will describe several modifications to design of con­ventional oxide gold heap leaching. They are targeted at reduc­ing costs and simplifying heap operations. These modifications were conceptualized during consulting work on over 90 differ­ent heap leaches. In 1995, a unique opportunity arose to imme­diately apply all of these design concepts to the permitting and construction of a new facility at the American Girl Mine in southeastern California. American Girl Mine has operated since 1987. In April 1995, the mine faced a situation with grave consequences for cash flow. Approval for mining of a new ore zone, Oro Cruz, had just been granted, after lengthy delays by California regula­tors. All existing pad space would be filled by October. Only 6 months were available, and new pad siting and design were still undecided. Permitting of a new pad had not begun. Options were quickly reviewed. A strong criteria for pad site selection and design was ease of permitting. There was also a strong desire to install a system that would achieve better met­allurgical recovery and reduced operating costs, compared to previous heaps at this mine. One site offered the best chance for rapid permitting. It was the site of the original 1987-90 heap leach. This already dis­turbed ground contained 1.6 million tons of heaped ore. The old heap had just completed detoxification and was about to be signed off as a Group C waste, ready for reclamation. Instead of recontouring and revegetating the old heap, which the reclamation plan anticipated, we offered BLM and the County something even better. We proposed to off-load much of the detoxed old heap, and reuse the space. The off-loaded material would be back-filled into the original open pit, imme­diately adjacent. While the footprint of the proposed new pad was much larger, the reuse of disturbed ground, and backfilling of the open pit, had very strong appeal to the regulators. Our permitting strategy included the technical design of the proposed new facility. Many of the new design details also appealed to the regulators, particularly the "zero active ponds" concept.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

The processing of residues derived from various operations in the mining and metallurgical industry for by-product recovery is becoming more prevalent. A principal target for by-product recovery is flue dust produced by conventional smelting operations. Flue dust from zinc smelters has been processed for many years for the recovery of cadmium (1,2). The cadmium recovery technique which consists of a selective sulfation roast, followed by a water leach and zinc dust cementation, produces a lead cake residue (see chemical analysis in Table I), which consists primarily of lead sulfate.

Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation's economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

The U.S. Department of Energy is charged, by federal law, with the responsibility for developing and implementing programs for long- term storage and terminal disposal of high- level radioactive wastes from both commercial and defense nuclear operations. Approximately 288,000 cubic meters of defense high-level wastes are currently in storage at the government's Hanford Reservation in the State of Washington, the Savannah River Plant in South Carolina, and the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant in Idaho (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980a). High-level wastes from commercial nuclear power production are stored in water pools or basins at various power plant sites. At the end of 1980, approximately 7.460 metric tons of uranium, contained within 28,300 fuel assemblies was in storage at various reactor basins. Although the present inventory of defense wastes are many times larger in volume and in total level of radioactivity than the commercial wastes, in the future, the latter will constitute a substantial quantity of wastes that will have to be disposed of. The present electric generating capactiy of nuclear power plants in the United States is 56.5 Gigawatts-electric (GWe). The amount of spent fuel that would be discharged and accumulated by the year 2000 from these operating reactors would be 38,000 metric tons. With a projected growth of the nuclear industry to 180 GWe in the year 2000, the amount of spent fuel accumulated at the turn of the century could reach 89,000 metric tons of uranium or approximately 318,000 assemblies. In any case, whether one postulates a no growth pattern or one where nuclear power provides its share in the country's electric generating capacity in the next two decades, a means for safe and environmentally accept- able disposal of high-level nuclear wastes must be found. Storage of commercial wastes in water basins, either at reactor (AR) sites or at away from reactor (AFR) sites, and storage of reprocessed defense wastes in surface or near surface tanks is a temporary solution and is not an alternative for permanent disposal.

Linear goal programming is a multi-objective optimization technique where the constraints of a linear programming formulation of a problem are considered as additional objectives. The optimal solution is the one that comes closest to satisfying all the objectives. An interactive computer program was written to utilize this technique in solving the feed blending problem faced by power plants de- pendent on multiple sources of coal supply. This program determines the amount of coal from each supplier to utilize in the blend. Examples of the use of the program in both long and short term coal procurement planning scenarios are given.

Epigenetic ore deposits in Nevada and Utah occur in clusters or belts in a variety of tectonic settings. Many are concentrated in the western half of Nevada in a region containing numerous, relatively large intrusive bodies. Throughout Nevada and Utah, they tend to be clustered in elongate zones or belts. Some of these belts are well defined by the distribution of mineral deposits, patterns of igneous rocks, alinements of faults, and aeromagnetic anomalies, whereas others are equivocal. The Pioche belt in eastern Nevada and western Utah, the Eureka belt in central Nevada, and the Manhattan belt in western Nevada exemplify the general characteristics of these belts, the close relation of some belts to geologic structure, and the lack of a clear correspondence in other belts. Some of these belts are characterized by alined or en echelon faults that disrupt the north-trending Basin ranges, by belts of Cretaceous and Tertiary granitoid and porphyry intrusive rocks near which the ore deposits occur, and by alined magnetic anomalies generally related to the Cretaceous and Tertiary intrusive rocks. All the mineral belts have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. The belts in Nevada and Utah may be related to a variety of factors, such as zones of structural weakness in Precambrian rocks, transverse zones of lateral faulting, localized areas of igneous activity, or a combination of these and other factors. Specific types of ore deposits in Nevada and Utah seem related compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated. Iron deposits, for example, are associated with mafic intrusive rocks such as diorite or gabbro, whereas copper deposits generally and tungsten deposits almost exclusively are associated with granitic intrusive rocks such as quartz monzonltc and granodiorite.

The paper in based on laboratory and pilot plant investigations which led to the development of a series of processes for production of high purity metals from nickel-copper-cobalt mattes of a wide range of composition. The selection of ammonia pressure leaching or acid pressure leaching for various mattes is discussed. This is followed by discussion of various methods for leach solution purification and metal separation. The metals of high purity are produced by reduction with hydrogen from purified solutions. Examples are given of complete flowsheets for a number of mattes. Drawing upon those examples, general principles for the selection of the most suitable treatment process for particular material are outlined. Under certain circumstances, those processes may replace part of the pyrometallurgical treatment and all of the electrolytic refining steps which are customary in the treatment of nickel-copper-cobalt mattes.

I. Introduction The free market cash price of aluminium in the third quarter of 1985 is approximately $1000/tonne, well below the short as well as the long run marginal costs of production. The current disparity between marginal costs and price, as well as the pattern of prices since their high level in 1980, has led many economists to question whether prices are governed by the 'fundamentals'. Prices, some would argue, are the result of speculation; and speculation is irrational, little influenced by the fundamentals of the industry. The object of this paper is first to examine the relation between the fundamentals and price. A number of simple models are formulated and some empirical evidence is given to show that prices are not very different from costs. There are good reasons why costs and prices have fallen since 1980. Second, the connection is drawn between the fundamentals and speculation. To do this the concept of 'rational expectations' is defined and applied to a model of the aluminium industry. Then speculation is introduced into the model and the characteristics of the solution are examined. The object is to discover the new factors that determine prices and the basic change in the nature of the solution that is caused by speculation. 2. Prices and the Simple Supply-Demand Model Consider a simple model of the aluminium industry. Demand, D, is determined by economic activity, A, given exogenously, and inversely by the price, P. Supply, Q, is determined by the inverse of the rnarginal cost curve, and so varies inversely with exogenous factor costs, C, and directly with price. Price is determined by the equality of supply and demand. Given the equilibrium level of demand, price in this model is equal to the rnarginal cost of producing the required level of demand, P = MC (Dl. Algebraically, [ ] How well does this simple model explain the change in prices during the last five years? Table I shows the LME cash price and the estimated marginal cost of producing consumption during the second quarters of 1980 through 1985. The figures in the table show that price and the marginal cost of supplying demand both fell between 1980 and 1982, rose in 1983 and by 1985 had fallen again. Only in 1984 is the direction of change different. And during the 1980 to 1985 period, marginal costs fell by approximately $560/tonne while the LME cash price fell by $678/tonne. There is a correspondence between the fundamentals of cost and price over most of the individual years and the period as a whole.

Recently development of cheaper and cleaner energy sources has become a more important and urgent issue, because of the soaring crude oil price and environmental problems such as global warming. In this social context, to establish basic technologies and solve fundamental issues associated with environmental impact assessments, the Environmental Impact Assessment Group of the Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources (MH21 research consortium) in Japan has conducted a number of research and development activities since FY2001. These activities include: 1) surveys of the marine environment that will form the basis of environmental impact assessments associated with methane hydrate development; 2) the development of core technologies to monitor deep-sea environments; 3) research of major issues related to environmental impact assessments; and 4) the development of numerical models to predict the deformation of seafloor sediments containing methane hydrates.

The authors discuss the cooperative efforts by Minnesota Ore. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

All complete plant foods require phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. And phosphate rock is the primary source for the phosphorus of the inorganic fertilizers. As more and more world food production is grown with these chemical fertilizers and since the Florida field supplies over 30% of the phosphorus component, let us look at the vital phosphate industry. Mining of phosphate rock in Central Florida began in 1891 and production has continued to grow at a steady pace. In 1965 a phosphate mine was opened in Hamilton County, North Florida and one in Beaufort County, North Carolina in 1966 . Since the beginning of mining in 1891, approximately 700 million metric tons of phosphate rock have been produced of this amount one-half was mined in the last 11 years. While the field was not deliberately "high-graded," the best of the known deposits were mined first. Those now being mined, and those yet to be mined, cost more to operate and the product is of lower grade. The U. S. Bureau of Mines' data for 1977 lists "Florida" phosphate rock production as 40.6 million tons; 86% of U. S. production and 85% of "Florida" capacity. The U. S. Bureau of Mines includes North Carolina production in "Florida" statistics so as not to reveal individual data for the one mine operating there. Approximately one-half of "Florida" production is exported, either as rock or as rock equivalent in upgraded products. Deposits of phosphate rock necessary to support present and future production are catalogued as: reserves, paramarginal reserves and resources. Reserves denote deposits which can be mined at a profit now. Paramarginal reserves are defined by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey as: that portion of sub-economic resources that a) borders on being capable of production economically, or b) is not commercially available solely because of legal or political circumstances. The " b)" part of this definition may now be expanded to include environmental controls and requirements. Resources are deposits which cannot be mined at a profit at present. Listed in Table I are reasonable values for each of the three categories of phosphate deposits in the northern and southern parts of Central Florida. North Florida and North Carolina.

In late November 2010, a Laotian landmark was achieved for the country?s first tunnel boring machine - (TBM) driven tunnel. Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna celebrated the breakthrough of a 7.6-m- (25.1-ft-) diameter Robbins single shield TBM for a hydroelectric tunnel on the Nam Theun River. The Theun Hinboun expansion project and 5.5 km (3.4 miles) headrace tunnel will bring much needed power in-creases to Laos and Thailand. . ?Since this is the country?s first machine, it has awakened people?s curiosity and interest. We had experienced Italian and Chinese crew members, but we also trained many Lao workers during the course of the project, as this was something they had not seen before,? said Luca Barbàra, Far East Manager for CMC di Ravenna. The machine broke through on Nov. 21 into an exit shaft close to the intake structure on the river. The machine is now being disassembled and removed - CMC hopes to use it on upcoming projects in the region. Due to the current rainy season and relative low level of the tunnel, the last 100 m (330 ft) up to the intake structure will be completed using drill-and-blast after the waters recede below the tunnel invert.

INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc are today rightly regarded as sister metals. Historically, however, they differ markedly with lead being known and in general use as the metal since 3000 BC in several countries which at that time might have been described as mature economies. Zinc was not isolated and recognised as an industrial metal with distinct and valuable properties until about 1700-1800 AD (although it had, of course, been utilised as a constituent of brass for some 2000 years previously). c were well established as industrial metals by the beginning of the 20th century. The present paper briefly reviews the overall growth in world consumption* and changes in the three main areas which today represent the mature economies or industrialised areas, i. e. ,Europe, the United States and Japan. Trends in overall consumption are determined by the demands for the individual uses for lead and zinc. The changes in patterns of use in the industrialised areas - individually and collectively - and reasons for the changes are also considered. LONG TERM TRENDS - 1900-1984 The World Picture Since the beginning of the 20th century the world consumption of lead (3.9 million tonnes in 1984) has grown almost fourfold and that of zinc (4.7 million tonnes in 1984) is almost eleven times greater than it was in 1900. The long-term trend has been one of continuing expansion for both. metals although the pattern has been severely disturbed at certain periods, for example in the years immediately following the two world wars and at times of marked recessions in industrialised areas. Apart from such major setbacks, new levels of consumption have been established regularly every few years. Recently, however, consumption has not really grown and with only a slow and partial recovery in world industrial activity at present, there is no indication that the peak consumptions of 4.2 million tonnes of lead, set in 1979, and 4.8 million tonnes of zinc (1973) will be exceeded in the near future. The growth in world lead and zinc consumption since 1900 is shown in Figure 1 (which includes changes in copper and aluminium for comparison). Overall growth over the period 1900-1984 has been about two percent a year for lead and about three percent for zinc (annual growth for copper has also been about three percent). Increases in tonnage consumption and growth rates by decade for lead and zinc are summarised in Table I. However, the growth rates by decade sometimes conceal very large individual annual increases and decreases. For example, in 1975 lead consumption fell by 13 percent and zinc consumption by 22 percent compared to 1974. In 1976 consumption of lead and zinc rose by 12 percent and 18 percent respectively. The years when consumption 'landmarks' (ie one, two, three and four million tonnes) were first reached are shown on Table 2. Clearly, the pattern of shorter periods being required to attain each extra million tonnes of consumption was broken in the 1970's. The consumption of zinc overtook that of lead for the first time in 1940, and since 1946 has always been at a higher level. Trends in industrialised areas The two key industrialised areas at the beginning of the 20th century were Europe and the United States which between them accounted for some 95 percent of world lead consumption and 98 percent of zinc consumption. Figures 2 and 3 show the growth in lead and zinc consumption, and Figures 4 and 5 the percentage shares for each area since 1900. Europe has usually been the major user of lead except for some years in the 1920fs, most of the 40's and early 50's when consumption in the United States was larger.
