By means of flotation experiments, potential-pH diagram, electrochemical testing and X -ray photoelectronic spectrum (XPS), the main factors (the thermodynamics and the property of surface products) influencing the separation of sulfide minerals (such as galena and chalcopyrite) in the collectorless flotation are studied. The actual conditions (Eh, pH) of separation are not conformable to the results of thermodynamic calculation. The kinetic behavior of oxidation of sulfide minerals and the property of oxidation products are the decisive factors of the separation of sulfide minerals in the collectorless notation.

Introduction Spontaneous combustion in coal mining is recognized as a major hazard in terms of safety and economics. A survey by Olaf (1979) revealed that 80% of coal mine fires were caused by spontaneous combustion. Modern mining methods demand a high capital investment. Closure of a working face may then result in a huge loss. Even a short production interruption can prove expensive. Spontaneous combustion may also produce lethal amounts of carbon monoxide, thus posing a serious threat to the health and safety of underground miners. The worldwide recession in the early 1980s resulted in a number of mine closures and production cutbacks. So large stockpiles at mine sites were common. Experience has shown that stockpile fires are difficult to extinguish. Critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion There is no simple method of predicting whether a particular mining method applied to a specific coal seam will result in spontaneous combustion. Under favorable conditions of heat accumulation, spontaneous combustion can occur with any type of coal. It is known that subbituminous coals are more susceptible compared to low volatility bituminous coals, and that a high ratio of exinite increases the risk. However, the inherent moisture content of the coal and the exposed surface area may be more significant. Actual mining and ventilation conditions also strongly influence susceptibility. In practice, the experience gained with the mining method applied to a particular type of coal seam must be carefully evaluated with respect to the factors responsible for spontaneous combustion. Feng, Chakravorty, and Cochrane (1973) summarized the critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion in coal mines (Table 1). Prevention methods and strategies Mine layout is the most important factor preventing spontaneous heating. Working districts should be designed so that a particular section can be isolated on short notice without affecting production in others. Sites for preparatory seals should be identified and marked during planning. With coal seams that are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion, the retreat method of working is preferred. This is because the gob is not subjected to a large difference in ventilation pressure. Coal pillars should be designed to resist excessive crush. The panel system of working is preferred, particularly for mining coals susceptible to spontaneous combustion. The size of each panel is calculated based on the incubation period and the rate of extraction. Controlling air leakage is also important for controlling spontaneous combustion. This is usually achieved by minimizing ventilation pressure difference, proper siting of doors, and avoiding unnecessary stopping and starting of fans. Air leakage is also reduced by sealant coating, injection of cements in cracks and crevices, and by maintaining good gateside packs. Application of inhibitors to control spontaneous combustion met with limited success. Chamberlain and Hall (1973) concluded that borate solution or Montan powder sprayed in the gob area or infused into a low rank coal would reduce the possibility of spontaneous combustion. Early detection of heating Significant research is being conducted worldwide to develop methods for early detection of heating. Monitoring combustion products during the early stage of heating is the most suitable method for detecting spontaneous combustion. The major gaseous products resulting from low temperature oxidation of coal are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. In mining operations, carbon dioxide monitoring is considered unsuitable because there are sources other than spontaneous heating from which this gas may originate. Thermodynamic solubility of chromium in pickling solutions (i.e., HF- HN03-H2O solutions) was determined as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations at 298K. Pure Cr, AISI type 316 and 416 stainless steel were used in this study. The results showed that the solubility of Cr increased with increase in the concentrations of HF and HNO3 acids in solutions. The solubility of Cr increased in the order of pure Cr > 416 SS > 316 SS. The theoretically calculated Cr solubility data were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

Even with the most conservative mine plan, rib instability can occur unexpectedly, and if not adequately dealt with, can progress from a nuisance to a major safety hazard. This Bureau of Mines paper examines the mechanisms of progressive rib failure in high mine openings and discusses techniques to control rib slabbing. A field test site in a longwall mine was instrumented to investigate rib behavior during mining. While data analysis showed minor pillar dilation, sporadic zones of progressive rib instability were detected which culminated in eventual rib failure. The failure occurred despite conservative pillar dimensions and shallow depth. Physical and computer models were used to demonstrate the mechanisms of rib failure and then evaluate the influence of support and other mine-related parameters on rib behavior.

A study was made of frictional ignitions in the underground coal mining industry from 1980 to 1992. The population of frictional ignitions was correlated to a variety of potential contributing factors including the mined coalbed, geographic location, mine production, methane gas emissions, and the type of mining equipment in use. The number of frictional ignitions reported in 1991 and 1992 surpassed the annual totals in all previous years included in the study. Most frictional ignitions occur during cutting operations at a coal face by a continuous miner. The average coal production of mines experiencing frictional ignitions is greater than the average of all underground coal mines throughout the survey period. Methane drainage may have produced a drop in the ratio of gas emissions to coal production (E/P) in mines experiencing frictional ignitions.

1. INTRODUCTION Empirical methods have always been important in tunneling in contrast to many other branches of engineering. Beginning in the late 19th century, when engineering entered the phase of formal modeling, this dichotomy could be seen to emerge even in the work of individuals. Culmann (1), Ritter (2) Kommerell (3) and others simultaneously were developing analytical approaches to bridge and building design and empirical approaches to tunnel design. The dichotomy remains. Empirical or simple analytical methods are used at most in the preliminary design of bridges and buildings, while they are used in all phases of tunnel design and construction. In fact, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in empirical methods, and with it discussion and controversy. This discussion has centered on the suitability of various methods. In some applications identical results are obtained with differing methods and in some cases radically different ones. On certain occasions the discussion has focused more on the methodological rather than empirical by taking issue with the appropriateness of particular parameters or the structure of some methods. This paper attempts to establish a basis for judging the suitability of empirical methods in tunnel design, and their applicability to particular cases. The paper makes no claim of exhaustiveness, and instead emphasizes basic requirements for application. Various methods are reviewed against this background. A detailed comparison of empirical methods and a description of their concept and background is now being prepared (4). Specifically the paper first defines empirical methods, and their purpose (Section 2), describes their structure (Section 3), and focuses on the basic requirements each must satisfy (Section 4). Arch Mineral's Captain Mine has used the Bucket Wheel Excavator System(BWE) for over 3 years in conjunction with a 180 yd3 (138M3) stripping shovel. The bucket wheels prestrip the soft overburden ahead of the shovel. This soft overburden is brought to the spoil side through a series of shiftable conveyors and placed by a spreader over the ungraded or partially graded shovel spoils. The placement of the soft overburden and top soil is accomplished in a manner that meets the reclamation mandates. The prestripping by the BWE has reduced the incidence of the highwall and spoil slides, depth the stripping shovel has to dig and the volume handled by the pullback draglines.

The flotation mechanisms of various flotation machines are briefly reviewed. The counter current column flotation mechanism is described in more detail. The merits of counter current column flotation include; improved metallurgical performance in terms of grade and recovery, effective cleaning action in the long cleaning zone with a blanket of fresh water, smaller floor space required due to the vertical configuration of a flotation column, low capital, operational, and maintenance costs due to the absence of moving parts and finally, easier flotation control due to the simplified circuit. The results of column flotation studies on various minerals and coal at CANMET are discussed. Some of the industrial experiences with the Canadian flotation column on various sulphides, oxides and coal are also presented.

Investigations of long-time grinding of fine quartz (to about 80% passing 0.35 pm) in a 0.6 liter stirred-media mill are described. Breakage rates and primary breakage distributions have been determined based on extensive characterization of the ground products by laser scattering/diffraction and gas adsorption. The results indicate that, while there is qualitative similarity between the breakage parameters for ultrafine and conventional (coarse) grinding, there are important, quantitative differences. In particular, it is found that primary breakage distributions become significantly narrower in the submicron sizes. The trend can be described using double-truncated log-normal distributions in which both a maximum (breaking) size and a grind limit are specified. The breakage distributions become progressively narrower as the size being broken becomes finer. Breakage rates follow a typical, consistent pattern in which the rate decreases with size according to a simple power law. Further decrease in the rates seems to occur after very long grinding times when the entire mill contents become finer than about 1µm. The effect is explained as a result of changes in the rate/size relationship in the submicron range.

INTRODUCTION In the Polish coal mining industry, the Upper Silesian coal basin has an important position. It contributes over 98% of the total coal production of Poland which reached 193 mt in the year 1979. In view of the significant urbanized area in this region as well as the industrial potential, it is important to protect the surface by stowing the mined out underground workings. Approximately 18% of the total production is mined from longwall faces with stowing. However, caved longwall faces are most popular. In the upper Silesian coalfield, approximately 337 highly mechanized longwall faces are in operation. Out of these 337 faces, 301 longwall faces are caved. One of the main requirements for effective and safe coal extraction is a suitable method for strata control. We can divide the complex process of strata control into four steps: 1. Strata investigations 2. Selection of supports for roadways 3. Selection of supports for longwall 4. Rock bursts and other hazards protection STRATA INVESTIGATIONS Estimation of the structure and physico-mechanical properties of the rock mass surrounding the workings is an important constituent of strata control. These factors definitely influence the rock stability, support load, working conditions as well as the mining technology. Complex methods of strata investigations involve a set of indicators enabling the estimation of the stability of the roof rock, strength of the coal seam and load bearing capacity of the floor. The basis for the evaluation of roof stability for a coal seam is the classification according to the resistance to bed separation (1). The bed separation resistance is equal to the strength of the rock in tension perpendicular to the bedding plane. In order to properly classify a rock, it is indispensable to make continuous profiles of the bed separation resistance from the immediate roof up to a distance of three times the thickness of the coal seam. The profiles are developed by utilizing mine roof investigations with the hydraulic borehole penetrometer. (Fig. 1) The penetration resistance is determined by the critical pressure required to cause crushing of the rock by the penetrometer indentor (2). The classification of roof rocks and their ability to cave spontaneously during longwall mining is shown in [Fig. 2]. The measurement of the critical pressure also allows for the determination of the compressive strength of the rock, the index of workability and roof fissuration.

A brief overview of industrial mineral exploration and exploitation in Chile is given. World class deposits of salt, lithium, nitrate, and iodine are present in northern Chile. The potential for further exploration and exploitation of these deposits, as well as the substantial reserves of other mineral commodities such as gypsum, anhydrite, volcanic rocks, and borates are discussed. In conclusion, industrial minerals mining in Chile has considerable potential, particularly as joint ventures between foreign and domestic companies. This has been demonstrated in the extraction of nitrates, lithium, iodine, and diatomites. However, as outlined in this paper, a number of factors need to be overcome before the true potential of the Chilean industrial minerals industry can be realized.

Large scale copper heap leaching in Chile began in November 1980 when the Lo Aguirre heap leach project was put into operation. At almost the same time, El Indio gold mine began production. While El Indio was not a heap leach project, it was Chile's first major bulk tonnage, open-pit gold deposit. This paved the way for the introduction of North American gold heap leach technology in the early 1980s. Heap leaching has become more popular in Chile during the past five years because it allows the exploitation of large but relatively low grade ore bodies at a reasonable cost. Pioneering research in hydrometallurgy carried out at some Chilean universities and at the Centro de Investigaciones Minero Metalurgicas (CIMM) played an important role. There are more than 10 large copper heap leach and solvent extraction/ electrowinning (SX/EW) process plants in different stages of development in Chile. Total production from these facilities will eventually increase Chile's present copper exports about 50%.

The 1980s saw a revolution in gold extraction technology, paralleled only by the implementation of the cyanide leaching process in the late 1800s. This revolution was led by the widespread adoption of carbon adsorption processes for gold recovery, heap leaching of low-grade ores and development of a variety of oxidation processes to treat refractory ores. In the late 1980s, gold production in almost all regions of the world increased, with the notable exception of South Africa. This geographical variety is creating a greater diversity of challenges for gold metallurgists. This is due to a wider range of ore types, new and varied environmental regulations and legislation, and a requirement to select the most appropriate technology to suit local needs. North America has led this technological revolution in the gold industry and is responsible for commercialization of most of the major innovations: carbon-in-pulp, heap leaching, whole ore pressure oxidation and whole ore roasting. Process selection trends A general trend in precious metals extraction technology has been the treatment of ores with progressively lower grades. The lowest cost treatment, dump leaching of material at run-of-mine size, has been increasingly applied. ZortmanLandusky, in Montana, is successfully leaching material above a cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) at an average rate of about 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). At this scale of operation and in the absence of any cyanide-consuming species in the ore, process operating costs for a ge¬neric run-of-mine leaching operation are estimated to be between 60 and 75 cents/ t (66 and 77 cents/st). One of the largest heap leach opera¬tions treating crushed ore is the Round Mountain Mine in Nevada. It processes about 45 kt/d (49,000 stpd) at an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.032 oz/st) at a nomi¬nal crush size of 80% -19 mm (-0.7 in.). Round Mountain also treats lower grade ore above a 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) cutoff by dump leaching at run-of-mine size.

The paper contains knowledge that have been achieved when the problem of airflow temperature and humidity changes prediction in mine airways was investigated. The substance of physical processes has been consistently applied. The methods of dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures calculations can be applied in any type of mine airway. The exceptionality of auxiliary ventilated airways is in the original solution of so called losing air flowing when a ventilation pipe is leaky. The combination of aerodynamics and thermodynamics solutions enable to determine climatic conditions on projected workplaces with a sufficient accuracy.

A relatively inexpensive and reliable method of using liquid phase tracers to aid in the solution of material balance problems is introduced. The method is of value in situations where one is required to calculate a material balance around a process that has the operating appearance of a "blender" or "splitter" with respect to the available slurry sample data. The paper briefly reviews material balance development and tracer applications in mineral processing, introduces the problem to he addressed, and provides both theoretical and industrial evidence establishing the potential of the method.

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a problem in the mining industry. New noise standards (Part 62) promulgated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures to address NIHL in mining. Noise surveys, including full-shift worker noise exposure and equipment noise profiling, have been completed in several surface coal mines, with an emphasis on draglines. The results of these studies are reported, their implications concerning worker NIHL are addressed, and their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed.

A survey was undertaken in late 1993 and early 1994 to gain insight into the current status of pillar-design practice in underground coal mines in the United States. A total of 552 room-and-pillar mines and 75 longwall mines were surveyed to collect general, geological and mine-plan information. The collected information was critically analyzed with special emphasis on the pillar-design criteria adopted in these mines. A safety factor analysis was also carried out for the pillars in the room-and-pillar mines.

Results of the common research work of ALUTERV-FKI and RI in field of ore dressing are presented here. Although monohydrate types of bauxites consist of finely dispersed minerals, however, in some cases certain contaminants (carbonates mainly), can be reduced by physical methods before Bayer process. Electronmicroscopy combined with computerized data processing is proven to determine the possibility of beneficiation and to control the different stages of ore dressing. Test results gained by Hungarian and Yougoslavian bauxite samples, contaminated by calcite, dolomite, siderite and pyrite, are discussed. Basic operations were: grinding (mostly dry) and classification, magnetic separation (mostly wet) and selective agglomeration. Only simple processes, having high efficiency and mostly dry ore dressing technique may meet the requirement of economical criteria. 1. Arizona's geologic history is complex, resulting in a diversity of rock types and earth materials, including those of commercial interest. Regional variations in geologic history gave rise to three geologic provinces and an inequitable distribution of both metallic and nonmetallic mineral wealth. The Colorado Plateau is largely composed of flat-lying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and late Cenozoic volcanic fields and sedimentary deposits. Associated resources include gypsum, halite, sylvite, clays, specialty sand, flagstone, volcanic products, and aggregate. The adjacent Transition Zone features a large expanse of Proterozoic rocks, economically important Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary materials. Nonmetallic resources in this province include facing and dimension stone, aggregate, decomposed granite, chrysotile asbestos, gypsum, clay, barite, fluorspar, zeolites, and limestone used for lime, cement, and railroad ballast. The Basin and Range Province has the most complex geologic history and, therefore, the most diverse assemblage of industrial mineral occurrences. These include halite, gypsum, clay, aggregate, decomposed granite, diatomite, zeolites, perlite, pumice, kyanite, limestone, marble, stone, and others. In addition, young stream deposits yield vast quantities of sand and gravel, Arizona's most economically important nonmetallic mineral commodity.
