An integrated steel company is an industrial complex ranging from raw materials mining, through pyrometallurgical smelting and refining, and hot shaping, to product finishing and coating. Within this complex is a great variety of operations which use vast quantities of water, and a variety of water uses which can result in pollution of many different types. The industry has recognized most of its problems for some time, and has spent a great deal of money and effort in reducing and eliminating pollution. A recent survey by AISI showed that the industry has spent, within the last 15 years, two hundred forty millions of dollars on water pollution control, and has authorized spending eighty-seven millions more on this type of non¬productive facilities. While much still remains to be done, I think the record to date is one we can be proud of. In this presentation, we will attempt to outline a number of the water pollution problems encountered in an integrated steel company and to show what types of corrective action have been and are being taken, using Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation as an example.

As technology and economic conditions allow mines to operate at ever greater depths, increasing demands are placed on the environmental engineer to adjust the capacity of the installed mine . - refrigeration systems. At the same time the engineer must satisfy the changing legislation, which demands that developments are carried out in as an energy efficient and environmentally accept- able manner. Following the trends outlined above, this paper is written to give an overview of the current and potential future refrigeration technology available to the mining industry. The effects that may be produced by the adoption in mining applications of the new generation of 'green' refrigerants are examined both at the design stage and when considering the viability of retrofitting existing systems so that they comply with the Montreal Protocol. An introduction to the concept of Total Energy Warming Impact (TEWI) is provided, with an explanation of its use in optimising system design and performance, and its incorporation as part of an environmental audit strategy. The paper concludes with a discussion of innovative refrigeration techniques and the possible future developments in legislation.

By-products from mining and processing plants and coal-fired power plants are being utilized more as valuable resources in Virginia. Mining-related by- products are divided into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation, and those generated from mineral processing or from industrial plants. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where by-products have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include coal- combustion products (fly ash and bottom ash), lime-kiln dust, flue-gas-desulfurization residue, rock fines, magnetite, Cold Spring clay (kaolin), Austinville tailings, soapstone rock, and calcium-carbonate paste. Some of these by-products have never been utilized, although several ideas have been investigated over the years.

This paper describes a procedure for minimizing the operational costs associated with blending sodium in coal at a surface mine in the Powder River Basin. Mine site blending is performed by adjusting daily production rates for high- and low-sodium pits. These adjustments are designed to produce a consistent sodium value called the blending target. The mine's contractual limit for sodium is sufficiently close to the field average value that any decrease in the sodium blending target may result in an opportunity cost, if the number of potentially minable tons is reduced. Conversely, any increase in the blending target may result in a higher sampling cost if more information is required to keep the blend within contractual limits. Blending parameters were defined using a geostatistical block model of sodium content that was based on analyses of hundreds of in-pit sample holes. Variograms for these data were used to compute the marginal costs of opportunity and sampling for a series of hypothetical in-pit drilling patterns. These marginal costs provided a basis for selecting optimum values for key parameters such as the blending target, production variance and in-pit sampling density. The benefit of implementing these optimized parameter values is that operational costs of sodium blending will be minimized over the long-term. At the mine where this procedure was developed, each dollar spent to increase the sampling density to the optimum value was shown to generate a $10 savings in opportunity cost.

Data from full scale marked ball tests are used to demonstrate the effects of abrasion, corrosion, and impact on overall wear rate. The predominate wear mechanism need be identified before the optimum alloy can be chosen for the grinding media. Use of high chromium grinding media often results in increased mill efficiency due to shape retention. Thus, a benefit from energy savings can result as well as a reduction in wear rate. Converting from steel to east high chromium grinding media requires close association and cooperation between producer and consumer in order to properly conduct these studies.

Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. Data is now appearing in literature that indicates many current paste fill systems in Canada suffer from plugged lines and severe wear rates. Both of these conditions suggest: design problems with the pipe distribution system, backfill composed of poorly graded material and/or possibly poor operator practices. Problems that can be prevented in the design stage, but still may be readily solvable with current technology. However, if left untreated will lead to an increasing frequency of down time. The compatibility of the distribution system with the paste fill rheology is fundamental and essential for the reliable delivery of fill. Either many mine operators are not familiar enough with the technology to provide a critical review that could foresee problems down the road, prior to construction and or North American designers are not clarifying their designs to their customers. The objective of this paper is to highlight key concepts to mine operators with the purpose of better enabling a critical review of contractor's/consultant's designs. There is a great deal of understanding about the rheology of backfill over a range of pulp densities from hydraulic slurry to dense to paste. However, outside of deep mines (especially in South Africa) neither hydraulic or dense fill distribution systems have suffered the problems of paste fill. Paste fill is fundamentally different from hydraulic fill principally in its transportation characteristics. These differences have a direct impact on the design of the distribution system. By understanding the practical implications of these differences the operator can play a more active role in their design while better appreciating how to best operate their own system.

Since the first recorded discovery of lead in southeast Missouri near Fredericktown about 1720, knowledge of the deposits has advanced in spurts as a result of outlying discoveries: 1864 Bonne Terre 1890 Flat River, Desloge, Leadwood 1948 Indian Creek 1955 Viburnum The original discoveries at Bonne Terre consisted of residual galena in clay, similar to that in the previous finds at Fredericktown. Occurrences in solid dolomite were not noted until mining of the clay pits exposed the walls of the weathered depressions. The St. Joseph Lead Co. had been established to conduct the operations and it was J. Wyman Jones, first president of St. Joe, who at that time brought about the first of the technological advances that were to occur in the district. He proposed use of the newly invented diamond drill to explore the bedrock showings, after observing the machines in the Vermont Marble Belt.

Peat has unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. These include high porosity and water retention, high absorption and adsorption properties, high buffering capacity, and it is a rich medium for microorganism activity. Peat has traditionally been used for horticultural purposes. However, in recent years, peat is increasingly being used for waste treatment purposes. This paper reviews North American literature on the use of peat for waste treatment applications. The literature indicates promising use of peat in treating municipal and on-site effluent, removal of low concentrations of heavy metals from wastewaters, and adsorption of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon pollutants.

Metal production has traditionally been a cyclical industry. 1977 in the base metals industry has highlighted that fact with a steady decline in the market place for base metals. Corporate aggregate planning is based on good forecasting and when changing conditions make that forecasting inaccurate, alternate analysis of schedules must be accomplished quickly. The computer is the only medium powerful enough to answer management's questions within an acceptable time frame. Worldwide communications networks now make it possible for the many multinational mining companies to arrive at coordinated corporate production plans based on similar basic data from several producing divisions. The Ontario Div. of Inco Metals Co., a unit of Inco Ltd., encompassed during 1977 14 producing mines, 2 nonproducing mines, 1 nonproducing open pit, 5 flotation mills, I smelter, 2 nickel refineries, 1 copper refinery, and an iron ore recovery plant. Several new mines are under development. Mine production approximates 63 500 tpd (70,000 stpd) from some 1000 workplaces. The need for longrange mine planning and scheduling is obvious and until recently has been satisfied by manual methods. However, while manual methods are often quite practical for a small number of mines, or for mines with relatively short lives, or for mines with only one mining method, the situation in the Ontario Div. is too complex and long-term to allow effective, timely planning by such methods. In 1967, a year after the first computer was installed in the division, work was begun on the computerization of the more than 30,000 borehole logs kept in the mines exploration files with a view to speeding up the assessment of mineral resources. Also in 1967 one of the first substantial systems developed on the main business systems computer was the monthly scheduling of development and production for all mines. This system encompassed tons productions per workplace, feet development per workplace, auxiliary and service activities and the requisite labor for each of these. These two dates are mentioned to show that concurrently with the acquisition of computers in the division there was an early understanding of the importance of automating mine scheduling and planning and of the potential for effective and useful computerization of such activities. In 1970, a pilot program was developed in one of the mines containing a large number of workplaces (350) to schedule the production on a network basis. Varying degrees of interest were shown by the individual mine engineers based on the complexity of the production planning problem at each mine. In an evolutionary process, mines were added to the system as its value became obvious in terms of time saving, flexibility, and accuracy. In 1975, the central mine engineering department decided that the system should be extended to all mines so that a complete division-wide long-range scheduling system would be available upon which to base development and production planning. This system would use basic ore data, allow the addition of scheduling commands, and calculate a schedule for the life of the mine. Many reports could be produced for each mine and all-mine summaries would also be available. The significance of the system can be stated in one phrase-speed, accuracy, and flexibility. Whereas in the past a long-range all mines schedule might have been done once a year, taking from two to three months, now it can be done in a day. The chief mines engineer can incorporate changes in input data and external constraints and call for a "new look" at the long-range schedule to assist him and mines production management in their decision-making processes. Using previous manual methods this could not be done quickly enough to be useful.

Mining legislation in Jamaica dates back to only 1947 when, on August 30 of that year the Minerals (Vesting) Act was promulgated. None of the exploratory and trial-mining projects over the preceding 450 years were regulated or controlled by law. It was the seriousness of the intent of the North American Aluminum Companies to establish a bauxite mining industry in Jamaica which led to the development of the first piece of mineral legislation. It is of note that the incoming mineral industrialist was more anxious than the Government to see that a legislative framework was in place. It was relevant then as it is today for good mining legislation to be in place for the Government to regulate and control the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources. It was also necessary for the industry to know their rights and obligations so that they could plan, explore and exploit with some assurance that their capital was secure. One of the main reasons that the mining of bauxite did not begin in Jamaica until 1952 was that no legislational framework existed prior to 1947. The Jamaican dollar is tied to the US Dollar at a rate of J$35.00 to US$1.

The key to unlocking value is to find opportunity where others have missed it. How does a company find value in a thoroughly explored asset? This article explores the approach taken by one company and the results it achieved from working this problem. The town of Shafter is located on a small bend in the road in west Texas' Big Bend Country. Its past emulates the glory days of so many other mining camps. A discovery was made, fortunes were built and World War II shut down the operation. The Shafter deposit continues to be one of the larg¬est undeveloped primary silver deposits in North America. Gold Fields Mining Co. recognized the area's potential in 1977 and embarked on studies to reopen and develop the district. Gold Fields spent $16 million on the Shafter project. It drilled more than 86,240 m (282,940 ft) in 475 holes, sunk two shafts and developed 1,550 m (5,100 ft) of underground workings. Today, the mothballed 447-kW (600-hp), single-drum Nordberg hoist and permanent production-type, single-compartment headframe continue to crown the shaft. Other buildings onsite house compressors, mine pumps, spare parts, drill core and other supplies. All these items look as though they arrived yesterday. By 1982, Gold Fields had completed an extensive feasibility study with ambitions to. construct a 1.36-kt/d (1,500-stpd) agitated cyanidation mill and base metal gravity circuit. Reserves at Shafter stand at 4.23 Mt (4.67 million st) grading 193.5 g/t (5.65 oz/st) silver. Gold Fields planned to produce 71.5 t/a (2.3 million oz/year) of silver at a head grade of 196.2 g/t (5.73 oz/st) silver with a 77% recovery rate. Cash costs were projected to be $5.54/oz with an anticipated initial and total capital cost of $46.2 million and $51.3 million (1984 dollars), respectively. The study assumed a silver price of $8.60/oz that has not been seen since the Hunt brothers quit buying silver. When silver prices declined, Gold Fields put the property up for sale.

INTRODUCTION The widespread use of desktop computers by an ever increasing number of people, both for personal and for business and government uses, has brought public attention to surprising stories about computer abuse. Before the advent of microcomputers in the information processing environment, hundreds of amazing misdeeds involving large computers had already been reported, most of them perpetrated by highly skilled professionals. The undreamed enlarging of microcomputer potential has steadily posed a major threat to complex mainframe computing systems, as joyful teenagers become familiar with the habit of hacking around someone else's large processing system, by means of makeshift phone communication networks, based on their intended homework for personal computers -- for the sheer fun of it. Now, the never ending capacity and speed improvement of commercially available micros has given rise to a brand new concern for society: the hazards of processing sensitive information in the powerful, but still unsafe microcomputer itself, whether or not linked to other micros or mainframe networks. This paper deals with some aspects of the problems and presents some practical hints as to enhance protection and minimize risks to sensitive and secretive information when processed on microcomputers. The physical considerations of computer security and pertinent safety precautions will not be discussed, because while essentially relevant to information protection, recommendations are well defined by processing resources suppliers and their importance is more widely recognized by users in general. Definitions and Classifications. The following definitions and classifications will be considered in this report: Information Assets: Any knowledge or information processing, storing or conveying device displayed in one's environment. It consists of two main categories: INFORMATION RESOURCES: End user's application data wherever recorded. PROCESSING RESOURCES: EDP skilled user's hardware, software, peripherals, magnetic media, communication devices, auxiliary equipment, supplies and related operational procedures. Information Protection: In a broad sense this is the set of necessary procedures to assure to the legitimate user the effective control of the operation and allow modifications of information assets, so that their physical or cognitive integrity be preserved or any unexpected loss minimized inspite of accidental occurrences or intentional actions. Classification Processes: Commonly two classification processes are used to define key terms in information protection: SENSITIVE CLASSIFICATION: Pre-defined standards for assessing the vulnerability to losses due to lack of proper processing continuity if information is destroyed, disclosed, secluded, or misused. SECRECY CLASSIFICATION: A spectrum of degrees as to the expectancy of holding exclusiveness of unique information whose destruction, disclosure, seclusion or misuse will cause a negative impact on the legitimate holder environment. Sensitive Information: Any knowledge whose destruction. disclosure. seclusion or misuse - - - implies losses to its legitimate holder. Introduction The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. Second, the classification system would allow the mining engineer to record falls routinely with little time and effort expended. This would encourage him to make observations concerning what type of roof support would work best in a given situation. Third, and probably most important, an adequate roof fall classification system is the first step toward developing a means of predicting the occurrence and extent of future falls. It was with these three reasons in mind that the following classification system was developed. The type of classification chosen reflects the background of the developer and the intended purposes of the system. Hylbert has proposed a geologic-based classification which groups falls as to structural and compositional origin. The need for similar systems is noted by Cox and by Ferm and Melton. Each of these researchers is confronted with a situation requiring a relationship between local geology and roof fall occurrence. Such a relationship would allow the prediction of the relative frequency of falls from a knowledge of local geologic features. The current research is aimed at fulfilling somewhat different requirements, as noted above. Fall geometry has been chosen as the basis of the classification system so fall type can be reported independent of local geological, environmental, and tectonic conditions. The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is the largest tunneling program in the history of the metropolitan Chicago area (Figure 1). Between September 1976 and September 1977, rock tunnel contracts having an estimated cost of approximately $420 million will be advertised. During the past six months, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) has awarded contracts for 16.5 miles of rock tunnels in diam of from 9 ft to 30 ft having a total bid price of $120,261,750. RECENT CONTRACT AWARDS Addison-Wilmette Tunnel $63,140,480 Upper Des Plaines #20 Tunnel 35,749,664 Upper Des Plaines #21 Tunnel 21,371,607 Addison-Wilmette Tunnel The first contract was advertised in September 1975. This contract, described as the Addison-Wilmette Tunnel, runs from Wilmette Harbor at Lake Michigan under the North Shore Channel to Addison Street in the City of Chicago, a distance of 10 miles. The contract calls for constructing approximately 27,750 linear ft of 30 ft ID and 24,020 linear ft of 22 ft ID unlined rock tunnels, excavation of two construction shafts, and the excavation of 32 drop shafts of various diam. Two hundred ninety-three companies were notified of this contract being advertised, 70 companies took out contract specifications and 3 companies ultimately submitted bids. "The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic application, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including particle size, density, and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. Also, typical mineral processing and manufacturing techniques are reviewed.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.
