In underground coal mining many excavated openings have a relatively short projected life span. To ensure safety for men and materials at a minimum cost over the projected operating life, only pillars for overburden support and roof bolts for support of the openings are used extensively. Mining activity constantly changes the geometry of the mine producing load changes on the structural support members of the openings that often induce unstable deformations which can lead to roof falls or pillar failures. The paper describes how simple deformation measurements can be used to design primary and supplementary roof supports and to predict roof falls and possibly pillar bumps. Specifically, bed separations in the roof measured directly with the help of borescopes and calculated from differential convergence data are used to optimize bolt links or support requirements for chemical stabilization of mine roofs. Roof falls are predicted on the basis of admissible values for cumulative convergence between roof and floor, convergence rate, and the change of the rate of convergence. The pillar extraction operations convergence anomalies detected from contouring identify bump prone pillars, while convergence and pillar dilation determine the yield zone in a pillar to verify pillar softening and de-stressing. According to a 2000 NIOSH report, about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in coal mines in the USA. Most coal mines have conditions that are conducive to corrosion of the rock anchor and ancillaries (such as plates), yet the effect of this on the performance of the anchors has not been adequately researched and its effects are not understood or quantified in the USA. There is considerable research into corrosion in civil engineering applications on surface and underground but the corrosion of coal mine rock anchors is not necessarily the same because: ? In underground civil structures, water ingress is usually stopped as part of the construction process. ? Many rock bolts in mines are only partially resin grouted leaving part of the reinforcing member exposed to corrosive conditions. All cable bolts in coal mines are only partially resin grouted. ? Even when mine bolts are fully grouted, shrinkage cracks occur and the rock stresses can change due to adjacent mining that can cause the resin column around the bolt to fracture further under external shear or tensile stresses. Most coal mines therefore have ideal conditions for bolt corrosion.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCI. Precipitation of the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

Nearly three decades of intense research, corresponding with a period of unparalleled discovery and the advent of scientific advances and hypotheses of ore formation, has resulted in a great body process-focused research concerning how ore deposits form. The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. The process of discovery is still referred to as search and exploration budgets are heavily weighted toward exploration drilling.

Rare-earth elements have some unique properties that are used in many common applications, such as TV screens and lighters. In the 1970&apos;s, rare-earths began to be used in a new generation of magnetic materials that have very unique characteristics. Not only were these stronger in the sense of attraction force between a magnet and mild steel (high induction, B), the coercivity (He) is extremely high. This property makes the magnetization of the magnet body composed of a rare-earth element alloy very stable, i.e., it cannot easily be demagnetized.

In a recently completed research project for the U.S. Bureau of Mines - Twin Cities Research Center, a computerized costing procedure for uranium in situ leach mining was developed by the NUS Corporation. This costing procedure, termed a cost model, employs a process engineering approach for estimating total project costs as well as equipment and manpower requirements for uranium in situ leaching operations in either Texas or Wyoming. 80th capital and operating costs are generated by the model along with the overall production cost/pound U3O8 subject to a known rate of return. Conversely, rate of return on equity can be solved for, subject to a given price of yellowcake. During the course of the research effort, this cost model was applied 50 typical site conditions in Texas and Wyoming. Sensitivity rests were conducted for numerous key parameters to determine the cost influence attributable to incremental changes In parameter values. The results of these sensitivity tests along with a description of the in situ leaching cost model have been documented as Bureau of Mines, Mineral Research Contract Report No. J019912, "Cost and Sensitivities Analysis for Uranium In Situ Leach Mining," dated March 1981.

"A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. Magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) was observed in the product, and its mechanism of formation is proposed using phase equilibrium data and a predominance diagram.IntroductionMagnesium has an excellent combination of low density and high strength. These properties have increased worldwide demand for and use of magnesium. Two major processes are used in the commercial synthesis of magnesium metal. The first method is electrolytic reduction and the second is thermal reduction using Pidgeon process. These processes can be classified as traditional techniques, but there are numerous emerging technologies that aim at reducing the production cost of Mg, its environmental impact and energy consumption. Thermal plasma processing is one emerging technique that has great potential in all the abovementioned key areas of magnesium production.Traditional reduction techniques. Two major reduction techniques, namely electrolytic and thermal reduction, have been used in the commercial production of magnesium. Electrolytic reduction is typically carried out in electrolytic cells from magnesium chloride (obtained from seawater or well and lake brines) (Tripp, 2009). The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modi tying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identity and quantity operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP&apos;s ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

The Candelaria copper-gold mine is located approximately 25 km south and east of Copiapo in Region III, Chile. The original concentrator was designed to treat 28,000 t/d (30,800 stpd) of chalcopyrite-bearing ore through a circuit consisting of a single 11.0 m (36 ft) diameter SAG mill, two ball mills, conventional rougher and scavenger flotation, column cell cleaner flotation, and ceramic disc filtration. The plant was commissioned in August 1994 and quickly reached capacity and expected levels of metallurgical performance. In May 1996, a decision was made to double the capacity of the concentrator by the addition of a second line of equipment. The expanded facilities were commissioned in October 1997, less than 18 months after the decision to proceed, and well within the budget. The original concentrator facilities were replicated or duplicated as much as possible, however, a number of important equipment changes were made to take advantage of industry developments since the original concentrator was designed. These included the use of Eimco 120 m3 (4,200 ft3) cells for rougher and scavenger flotation and the installation of a Svedala VTM -800 Vertimill for regrinding. This paper describes the rationale behind these changes and explores the reasons for the success of the project.

Historically, mica usage has been low because of limited availability; as a by-product of many small processors, who have lacked motivation for extensive R & D. The discovery of a 30 million ton deposit of 85-90% pure phlogopite, when existing markets are only 300,000 tonnes annually, forced the search for large volume new markets. Increasing costs of energy, petrochemicals, plastics and glass fibers, and environmental constraints on asbestos usage, have led to new opportunities for mica as a reinforcing filler. Extensive research and developments; in beneficiating, processing and treating mica, has been necessary to satisfy these new markets.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia currently operate a 600,000 t/d mining and 125,000 t/d milling operation in the remote highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The isolated location and generally difficult working conditions make for challenges not encountered in most North American operations. In spite of this, the mill technical groups have been able to develop and maintain a highly effective level of plant wide automation. This has been achieved through the appropriate selection of available technologies and the implementation of innovative management practices. This paper provides an overview of the control systems currently installed and focuses on those practices which have resulted in the long term success of process control at Freeport.

"INTRODUCTION Brutally honest mining executives will tell you that “safety is job #1 but.. dollars are also extremely important”. When economic times are tough, as they are now in mining, it can feel like you need to choose between safety and cost control. Leading edge companies know that it is excellence at both that provides the best performance. FLUID POWER SYSTEMS Fluid power systems are ubiquitous in mining – longwall systems, continuous miners, drills, haul trucks and excavators, etc. And fluid power systems are getting more powerful and using higher pressures to move greater volumes and achieve higher productivity. Average operating pressures in mobile equipment has been rising to 450 bar (6,500 psi) over the last decade. With increased system pressure comes ever increasing levels of stored energy. Stored energy that, if released in an uncontrolled fashion, can do tremendous harm to people and things.Fluid power systems are composed of pipe, flexible hoses, pumps, valves and actuators. They are filled with fluid (mineral oil or fire-resistant) to transmit power to where it’s needed for performing work. With time and use fittings can loosen, component performance diminishes and hoses wear and tear. In hostile environments, like coal mining, hydraulic hoses can fail in as little as 2 years according to DGUV (umbrella association of German Accident Insurers), maybe sooner in some particularly challenging environments. FLUID POWER SYSTEM SAFETY While appearing simple and benign on the surface, fluid power systems, particularly such systems on mobile equipment, have many potential hazards. Hazards that most workers aren’t aware of – particularly young, new hires. And those hazards that can quickly turn deadly. During the past couple of years, including at last year’s SME Conference, I talked to a wide variety of mining people about high pressure fluid injection injuries. Some people, often with little or no field experience, never heard of it. But, people with mine operations / maintenance experience were almost always aware of such injuries.Some had even seen it happen right in front of them. But most claimed it didn’t happen all that often. It just wasn’t seen as a problem!"

The paper presents increasing importance of mineral secondary and waste raw materials in the minerals management in Poland. Definition of mineral secondary and waste raw materials is proposed, according to current Polish law. On this basis, sources of various types of mineral waste raw materials are analysed. The special attention is paid to the wastes from mining and processing, wastes from power plants, and wastes from steelworks and other smelters. Other types of waste and secondary materials, such as metallic containers, glass containers, batteries, metallic wastes and scraps, are also taken into account. Analysis of sources of such materials is shown together with the main directions of their economic use. Available sources of information on manufacture and use of the mentioned secondary and waste raw materials are also analysed. Finally, for a wide range of waste materials, their current and expected significance as substitutes for some industrial and construction minerals in Poland is given.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies to evaluate dust control technologies on deep cut continuous mining sections. These surveys have been conducted in different mines using various mining methods, face ventilation systems and dust control systems. The surveys typically consist of respirable dust sampling combined with a time study of mining activities. Measurements of dust control and operational parameters are also made. Critical elements identified for controlling respirable dust in deep cut mining systems include controlling intake dust, dust collector capacity, face ventilation quantities and velocities, positioning of workers, work practices and selection of equipment. This paper discusses how the dust surveys are conducted in deep cut mining sections and how these surveys are used to identify specific dust generating sources.

An interactive mine ventilation simulation software program (WIPPVENT) was developed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The WIPP is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research and development project located near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The facility is designed to provide a permanent, safe underground disposal of U.S. defense generated transuranic waste in bedded salt. In addition to its regular functions, the underground ventilation system is engineered to prevent the uncontrolled spread of radioactive materials in the unlikely event of a release. To enhance the operability system, Westinghouse Electric Corporation has developed an interactive mine ventilation simulation software program (WIPPVENT). While WIPPVENT includes most of the functions of the commercially available simulation program VNETPC (copyright © 1991 Mine Ventilation Services, Inc.), the user interface has been completely rewritten as a Windows ® application and screen graphics have been added. WIPPVENT is designed to interact with the WIPP ventilation monitoring systems through the site wide Central Monitoring System.

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska&apos;s abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.

An investigation of several trace elements distributed among sulfide minerals from deposits located in the southeastern United States was conducted. The deposits investigated are distributed within both the Blue Ridge Province and the Piedmont Province, which are contiguous geographic provinces. Twenty five deposits were examined;&apos; eleven in the Blue Ridge Province and fourteen in the Piedmont Province. Figure 1 shows the locations of deposits investigated. In the deposits investigated, the mineral phases examined were pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These phases were chosen because of their relatively widespread occurrence, although no pyrrhotite was seen in the Piedmont Province. A total of 116 polished surfaces of ores were prepared, and mineral phases were collected from these surfaces for analysis. Samples were analyzed for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. A total of 372 analyses were made. Trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following standard procedures. In this study, trace elements are defined as those elements which are present in the mineral but which do not affect the chemical formula for that mineral. Lead is considered as a trace element only in ores where little or no lead sulfide could be identified as a distinct mineral phase.

Talc is used as an essential ingredient in a variety of plastics applications ranging from polyester body patch compounds through polypropylene automotive, appliance and household furniture components to high performance parts made from liquid crystal engineering resins. This paper focuses on polyolefin applications, the three-tier market for talc in polypropylene, the effects of various tales in typical compounds and trends in each market segment. Emphasis is given to emerging markets, examples of which are polypropylene compounds that mimic higher cost resins, and polyethylene films. Customer requirements for tales for these purposes are discussed.

A technology for producing liquid fuels from oil shale at prices competitive with crude oil prices is a necessary but not exclusive prerequisite for the development of a shale oil industry. Many other factors will affect the timing and the rate at which oil shale is commercially developed. Among the more important are: governmental policy concerning oil shale and oil resources (including the Outer Continental Shelf) that are under Federal control; oil import policy; Federal taxation of shale oil production including depletion allowances; regulatory practices; competition from other energy sources, both synthetic and natural; Federal treatment of factors affecting competing energy resources; and present legislation under which the public resources must be leased. Significant changes in any of the foregoing factors could have a controlling effect on the timing and rate of oil shale development. The effect of changes in each of these factors is evaluated.
