Flotation columns have been readily accepted for use in most sulfide flotation plants; however, recently columns are being used in many other areas. Recent improvements in design methodologies have overcome many operating problems and led to improvements in metallurgy. In addition, physical improvements in column design have simplified their operation while leading to better control. The Turbo-Air External Bubble Generator has provided a method for bubble size control and variation in air holdup and carrying capacity. These have enabled commercial operations to improve grades and recoveries by optimizing performance.

Part 2 of this article continues with a discussion of features that distinguish contemporary investment analysis in mining from earlier methods. Part 1 traced the evolution of evaluation methodology from the traditional and discounted cash flow methods to the present. Quantitative investment models of the past 20 years played an important role in mine evaluation, but a new integrated approach to mine investment decision-making is now developing because of growing economic, technical, and political uncertainties. One of those uncertainties -inflation-was discussed in Part 1. Increased Risk At a time when mineral production technology and analytical evaluation tools have never been more sophisticated, it may seem anomalous to claim that mining ventures are riskier. Whereas technical risk has, indeed, been notably reduced, business risk the chance of a major loss due to market factors-has increased. This has been caused by two factors: the rapidly rising capital requirements of new projects and increasingly unpredictable future economic conditions. These difficulties are compounded by the long lead times of large, new mining projects. Rising Capital Requirements A $100 million investment is no longer considered to be a large mining project in most cases. For a large metal mining project, the total cost of the concentrator alone can exceed $100 million. Amoco Minerals' Thompson Creek molybdenum mine being developed in Idaho will cost over $350 million, for a relatively modest sized (23-kt/d or 25,000-stpd) ore operation with no extraordinary features. For a major grass roots copper operation producing blis¬ter or refined copper, the capital requirements are billions of dollars, not millions. Project costs are higher for two reasons. One, the projects themselves are larger; and two, the capital cost per unit of production is rising rapidly. Projects are larger because lower grade ores, yielding smaller margins, must be mined in greater volume-particularly in view of the high fixed costs of modern technology. When analysts contemplate any capital project, an important consideration is the minimum economic size of the facility. This is the smallest size that can be built and still be competitive on a total unit production cost basis. In the conventional copper smelting business, for example, a production rate of at least 91 kt/a (100,000 stpy) of blister copper is about the absolute minimum for reducing unit fixed costs to competitive levels. Clearly, many variables affect the minimum economic size of a mining facility, but with few exceptions that size continues to grow. Unit capital costs of new mining projects also are continuing to rise. The accompanying table shows that the capital costs in primary copper production have risen faster than the cost of living. Of particular note is the capital charge of over $1.70/kg (77411b) required for a new, fully integrated facility in 1981. Thus, the mid-1982 copper price would not even cover the cost of capital for a new copper producing complex without considering the direct operating costs for such a facility. The breath-taking costs of new mining projects are caused by factors such as increasingly complex technology, the rising social costs of creating attractive living and working conditions for employ¬ees, and the expenditures re¬quired for environmental protec¬tion. For whatever reasons, how¬ever, unit capital costs in mining continue to exhibit staggering growth rates. Future Economic Conditions Risk is not only a function of the size of the potential loss-an im¬portant measure of which is the capital intensity of mining dis¬cussed above-but also of the like¬lihood of incurring the loss. It is here that the ever increasing lead times of mining projects and the glaring limitations of economic forecasting are so important. In comparison to nearly all other in¬vestments, mining has more capi¬tal at stake for a longer period of time before commercial uncer¬tainty is resolved by distant eco¬nomic conditions that are subject to high forecasting errors. A sobering example of the pre¬ceding points occurred with the Lakeshore copper mine in south¬ern Arizona that Hecla Mining Co. undertook to finance and manage in 1969. The project was a joint venture of Hecla and the El Paso Natural Gas Co. and included two mines-one producing oxide ore and a second in the sulfide zone¬and a complex processing facility producing both electrowon cop¬per cathodes and copper precipi¬tates. Mineral liberation modeling can be traced back to the early work 0fA.M. Gaudin up through more recent population balance modeling by R.p. King, J.A. Herbst and G.T. Adel. A more micro-scopic look was taken at the University of Utah in the form of the J.E. Sepulveda and J.D. Miller Pargen model which permits the creation of an arbitrary shape, multiphase particle made up of discrete grains. Recent work on image analysis and tomographic analysis by J.D. Miller and C.L. Lin have laid the experimental ground work for model validation, but until now it hasn't been possible to include the necessary physics of the particle stressing process to allow the development of a 'ffirstprinciples"mode1 which does not presuppose a "mode” of liberation (e.g., random or by detachment). Recent developments in discrete grain breakage (DGB) modeling now make a generalized physics based model feasible. This paper describes current work that is being done to develop a physics based discrete grain liberation (DGL) model. Two-dimensional and three dimensional simulation results exploring the effects of particle size, phase properties and loading type are presented. Relationships between energy based liberation efficiency, degree of random liberation and material properties are identified.

With some exceptions, minerals may be acquired on the unappropriated public lands by one of three methods: (1) mining claim location under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) mineral lease under the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920; and (3) sale contract under the Mineral Materials Act of 1947. Leasable minerals such as oil, gas, coal and phosphate are specifically designated as leasable in the Mineral Leasing Act so the method of acquisition is clear. As a general rule, metallic minerals are acquired by mining claim location. However the nonmetallic minerals, most of which are industrial minerals or gemstones, present a more difficult problem. These minerals are acquired either by mining claim or a sale contract depending on their chemical composition, physical properties and the use to which they are put. The Act of July 23, 1955 (30 U.S.C. 61 1) provided that uncommon varieties of sand, stone, gravel, pumice, pumicite or cinders are locatable; whereas, common varieties of such minerals may only be acquired by a contract of sale. The widespread location of mining claims to appropriate such deposits has caused many land management problems. Federal court and Interior decisions offer the most useful guidelines in determining the most appropriate method of acquisition.

The centrifuge which will be reviewed in this dis¬cussion is the continuous solid bowl typo. As there are presently approximately 2000 of these units operating in our country, and about 200 of these in use in the coal industry, I expect that most of you are acquainted with its operating principle. How¬ever, for those who are not familiar with the machine a brief introduction is in order. The continuous solid bowl centrifuge was first successfully marketed, worldwide by the Bird machine Company in 1934. The successful development of this unit was based primarily on the invention of a drive mechanism to properly control the differential speed between the two rotating elements. This centrifuge was introduced into the coal industry immediately following the second World War. Today there are five or six additional firms' selling this machine in our country, and approximately twenty others in Europe, England and Japan.

United States Steel's Cumberland Coal Operations is located in Greene County in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The mine and related facilities have been in operation since September of 1977. Production from this mine, U. S. Steel's first commercial coal mining venture, will eventually reach a level of 2.72 million mt of clean coal per year and is totally committed to electric power generation. Cumberland is a slope mine in the Pittsburgh seam and is mined by continuous mining machines and longwall. The coal from the mine is trans- ported by belt to the surface, taken through a rotary breaker for initial preparation, and stored in raw coal silos. It is then processed through the preparation plant and taken to a clean coal silo where it is held for train loading. Cumberland Mine operates its am 28.16 km railroad to transport the coal to the Monongahela River. The unit train consists of thirty-one 90 mt cars. The coal, once loaded on barges, is then shipped to the customer. Cumberland Mine is one of the most modern coal preparation and unit train loading systems in the nation. The preparation plant is de- signed to receive coal from the silos at a rate of 720 at per hour. The +6.35 mm material is screened out and cleaned in a Daniels heavy media vessel with two 3.35 m weirs. Minus 6.35 mm material is fed to sixteen #88 Deister concentrating tables. The cleaned coal from this circuit is dewatered, and all effluents from the mechanical dewatering report to the classifying Cyclone sump for classification through ten 35.6 cm cyclones. The cyclones overflow material (-150 mesh) is processed through two banks of three 8.5 m3 Denver D.R. flotation machines. The cyclone underflow pro- duct (28-1 0 mesh) is processed in two banks of 5 six 2.83 m Denver Sub A machines. The clean flotation product is then dewatered in Bird screen bowl centrifuges, blended with the other clean coal size fractions, and the total plant product further dewatered in a thermal dryer.

The petroleum refining industry makes extensive use of catalysts for the conversion of crude oils into more usable products such as gasoline, fuel oil and gas, aromatics, and others. Catalysts used for hydraprocessing contain cobalt-molybdenum or nickel -molybdenum, although there are catalysts that also contain tungsten. During hydroprocessing, nickel and vanadium are deposited on the catalysts, eventually rendering them inactive. The refiners are then confronted with the problem of disposing the spent catalysts. In the past, landfilling was a common method of disposal and it is still practiced in some countries. Other refiners prefer to stockpile the spent catalysts at the refineries until the price of metals warrants their sale to metal reclaimers. This practice, however, poses environmental problems to the refineries for storage and disposal of spent catalysts. Other types of catalysts are amenable to regeneration. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, and alumina from spent hydroprocessing catalysts by Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and to review the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate for pressure leaching of spent catalysts.

Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a cooperative arrangement between a component or raw materials supplier and a manufacturing customer. The supplier must analyze his own manufacturing process and determine, predict, and control those variable elements in the circuit which affect finished product characteristics according to the customer's specifications. The results include: control of fluctuations in product characteristics to a narrow range, close communication between supplier and customer, and an increased responsibility for quality control placed on the supplier. In the mining and. processing of airfloated kaolin some unique problems arise with the SPC concept: 1) The SPC system was designed for manufacturing facilities that did not have to deal with natural variations in their raw material; 2) The airfloat process is relatively simple and offers limited opportunity to change processing steps or "fine tune" a circuit for special product needs; 3) Determining adequate sampling frequency for a plant which processes hundreds to thousands of tons per day is statistically difficult; and, 4) Due to the variety of customer industries served, different SPC programs must be set up to deal with widely varying specifications. For airfloated kaolin, SPC is "in line" process control, not after the fact "quality" control. The emphasis must be on statistically valid sampling of the kaolin ore and complete monitoring of its path through the beneficiation circuit.

Lack of visibility from cabs of the large haulage trucks used in open-pit mines has become a serious safety problem. This Anaconda research program was conducted to develop a low-cost system for alerting haulage truck operators of the presence of small vehicles in their blind areas. Several systems, developed and tested to help solve this problem, are summarized and evaluated in this paper. As the size of the haulage trucks used in large open-pit mines has increased, so have the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup tucks and cars become concealed within these blind areas and, thus, become a serious safety hazard. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 150-ton haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are those at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. It is within these areas of "no visibility" that numerous small vehicles over the years have been crushed by the large haulage trucks at various mine sites. Although the occupants in most instances, have escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed, injuries and deaths have occurred. The accidents, in most cases, were attributed to negligence or carelessness on the part of the driver of the smaller vehicle, but the problem of limited visibility still exists, and a solution is needed.

In September of 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) published final regulations that effect owners and operators of underground storage tanks (USTs). These regulation include stringent technical requirements for owners and operators of USTs containing petroleum and certain hazardous substances. The technical requirements effect both new (those installed after December 1988) and existing USTs and include notification; performance and operating standards; release detection, reporting, investigation; release response and corrective action; and closure requirements for out-of-service USTs. The USEPA also published final regulations regarding financial responsibility requirements for owners or operators of petroleum USTs in October of 1988. These regulations require owners or operators of petroleum USTs to demonstrate financial responsibility for the costs of corrective action and compensating third parties for bodily injury or property damage caused by releases from petroleum USTs. Like thousands of other industries, the mining industry must become thoroughly familiar with these new regulations in order to properly manage their UST systems, ensure compliance, and understand other ramifications imposed by these regulations.

The San Manuel oxide ore reserve ranges in depth from being exposed on the surface to lying 1000 ft. beneath a conglomerate layer all of which is confined in the subsidence zone of an active sulfide block caving operation. Present day recovery of the oxide copper values is either by open pit mining-dump leaching, or in-situ leaching of the oxide ore using dilute sulfuric acid solutions and solvent extraction/electrowinning processing of the pregnant leach solutions. Future plans are for continuation of leaching with expansion of reserves and increased processing rates. The state of the mining industry and copper in particular has not been good for a number of years. All of the producers that are still operating have made major adjustments in order to remain competitive. Magma Copper Co. is no exception.

The necessity to protect the environment can limit mining activities and make some areas less attractive for the prospecting and exploration of mineral deposits. In Poland, the main environmental factors that restrain Irumng are: 1. Regional A Protection of the landscape B. Protection of ground water from contamination and depletion 2. Local A Conservation of fertile soils B. Conservation of forest resources C. Preservation of natural, cultural, and historical monuments The regional factors listed above that can limit mining are presented on a map of Poland. These data, combined with maps of known and potential mineral deposits, make it possible to delineate general levels of limitation for various mining-related activities varying from "no existing environmental limitations" to "no allowed industrial activity" As an example, a compilation of such data is presented for lignite exploration and mining in Poland. Lignite deposits occur within Upper Paleocene to Upper Miocene clastic strata at depths ranging from a few to 300 m. The thickness of the lignite is generally a few meters, but can locally reach over 100 m within grabens. As a result, the overburden-to-lignite thickness ratio varies from less than 1 to over 20. Within the same Tertiary strata, and within overlying Quaternary strata, several aquifers exist that produce good quality water that may be contaminated or depleted during lignite mining. The protection of these ground waters is the main factor limiting lignite mining and should be addressed in mining and environmental policy and planning.

INTRODUCTION Early in the morning of July 16, 1979, there was a breach in the earthen retaining dam of a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation's (UNC's) Church Rock uranium mill. The acidified liquid and tailings slurry spilled through the damaged portion of the retaining wall into an arroyo that is a tributary to the Rio Puerco river system. The Rio Puerco runs through Gallup, New Mexico, and eventually crosses the New Mexico-Arizona border (Fig. 1). On its way to Gallup, the Rio Puerco and its tributaries pass through land with a checkerboard pattern of ownership, with portions owned or leased by the Navajos, individuals, the Bureau of Land Management, and the State. In terms of tailings liquid volume (3.6 x 108L; 94 million gal), the UNC spill ranks as one of the largest. The mass of solids released in the slurry (10.0 x 105 kg; 1 100 tons) appears to be close to the median for accidents of this kind, however [U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), 1979]. The UNC first opened its Church Rock uranium mill in 1977 on land adjacent to acreage belonging to the Navajo tribe. The mill, which is next to the UNC Church Rock mine, is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) northeast of Gallup, New Mexico (Fig. 1). Gallup, a town of 18 000 people, is the closest population center. The region surrounding the plant site is sparsely populated by Navajos, at a density of approximately 5.8 persons/km2 (15 persons/sq mile). The UNC mill and mines employ approximately 650 persons, and the adjacent Kerr-McGee uranium mine employs about 300. The UNC mill normally processes 3.2 x 106kg/day (3 500 tons/day) of uranium ore, depositing the acidified tailings slurry in a series of three earthen holding ponds. The tailings ponds are located east of the pipeline arroyo that feeds into the Rio Puerco approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the southernmost tailings dam. The liquid portion of the tailings slurry evaporates in the ponds; hence, under normal conditions, there is no surface flow from the holding ponds to the arroyo. Both runoff from the plant site after heavy rains and possible seepage from the tailings ponds may deliver radionuclides to the arroyo-river system, however. The dam across the southernmost tailings pond was considered to be in keeping with the state of the art. However, the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division (NMEID) had warned UNC about dangers of locating the pond over a heterogeneous geological formation. The state Engineer's Office approved of the site only after UNC agreed to strict design criteria. Others have pointed to dangers of constructing earthen dams for impoundment of uranium mill tailings (Carter, 1978). Causes of the dam break were multiple: the UNC mill filled the tailings pond to a level that exceeded permit criteria; the tailings pond was lined improperly; the dam was constructed using clay that was compacted excessively, resulting in cracking and subsequent seepage; and the unstable substrate beneath the dam permitted differential settling. The UNC Church Rock mine has continuously released dewatering effluent into the pipeline arroyo at a rate of 88.3 L/sec (1 400 gal/min) since 1968. Before 1975 this effluent was not treated; after 1975 it received precipitation treatment for removal of Ra-226. Radionuclides are also released into the river system through the dewatering of the Kerr-McGee uranium mine 1.6 km (1.0 mile) north of the UNC mill. During usual mining operations, approximately 227 L/sec (3 600 gal/min) are released into the pipeline arroyo and subsequently into the Rio Puerco. The Kerr-McGee mine began continuous release of dewatering effluent in January 1972. In 1974 Kerr-McGee began Ra-226 precipitation treatment of its dewatering releases, but NMEID data indicate that treatment has often been incomplete. The effluent from both mines has been responsible for transforming the downstream portion of the Rio Puerco from a sporadically dry riverbed into a continuously flowing stream and has contributed to the current levels of background radiation along the river system (Table 1). This paper will summarize the postspill monitoring efforts and relate the assessment of this spill to the general question of evaluating the health effects of nuclear fuel-cycle wastes. The data pertaining to the measurement of radionuclides in the Church Rock environment and the radionuclide concentrations in animals will appear in forthcoming reports. CHURCH ROCK HEALTH EFFECTS ASSESSMENT APPROACH The initial health effects evaluation involved identifying the radionuclides that were released into the river system from the tailings pond. Table 1 lists the State of New Mexico maximum permissible radionuclide concentrations for liquids released to unrestricted areas, the typical tailings liquid concentrations, and postspill river water concentrations. The tailings liquid contained comparatively high levels of Th-230, Ra-226, Pb-210, and Po-210--all of which, according to postspill river water samples, had exceeded the state maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) at one time or another. After the radionuclides in the tailings were identified, pathways through which humans could be exposed were clarified. 15.1 INTRODUCTION The mine development process, as discussed in Chapter 2, is a series of data gathering and analysis steps. As the mine development process proceeds, information about the geology, mineability, and metallurgy of a particular deposit is continually generated, along with environmental information regarding project permitting status. As data are obtained, checkpoint evaluations are typically conducted to determine the economic viability of the particular deposit. Although the project evaluation process was discussed at length in Chapter 2, a brief review of the process is presented here to "set the stage" for the discussion on economic analysis of heap leach projects. Figure 15.1 (MacKenzie, 1980) presents an overview of the sequential process of mine development. Once the deposit is discovered or acquired, an initial delineation program can be undertaken to expand the project's geologic, mining, and metallurgical data base. At the end of this initial program, the direction of the project is evaluated. The company can either abandon the project, postpone it, develop and mine it, or gather additional data in hopes of improving the project's economic viability. If the company continues gathering data, then another decision point and evaluation will be required. This process may continue until the company either decides to postpone the project or develop and mine it. A project may be postponed indefinitely, typically in hopes of improved metals prices. Certain holding costs, such as land or royalty payments, may be associated with postponement. In general, once a company goes through two evaluations, the project is less likely to be abandoned. For this discussion, it is assumed that the company will undertake initial, second, and third delineation programs to gather sufficient geologic, mining, metallurgical , and environmental data to justify a positive production decision from the second or third economic evaluation. The objectives of the first delineation program will be to confirm and expand upon the available information about the deposit. During the second delineation program, development funds should be directed toward identifying the critical project items (i .e., ore reserves, mineralogy, mineable grade, metallurgical recovery, etc.) that must be resolved before making the production decision. This second economic evaluation can be used to determine which metallurgical concept will be applied to the project: heap leach or a traditional agitation-type leach plant. If the proper work has solved key project concerns in the second program, a production decision may be made from that evaluation.

The San Miguel Mine is owned by San Miguel Electrical Cooperative, Inc. and operated by Atascosa Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. This multiseam, single-zone lignite surface mine is located near Jourdanton, Texas, 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of San Antonio. Lignite extracted from four closely-spaced seams is used to fuel the 400-MW San Miguel Power Plant. Recovery depths range from 7 to 37 meters (25 to 120 feet). The mine began stripping operations in the spring of 1980 and now produces approximately 2.5 million tonnes (2.8 million tons) of lignite annually. Atascosa Mining Company is responsible for production, maintenance, engineering, and management services. Production responsibilities include topsoil removal, overburden removal, lignite mining, spoil pile regrading and topsoil replacement, as well as ash disposal and construction and maintenance of water retention and diversion facilities.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

The Tower Mill has proven to be a grinding machine with a demonstrated application flexibility. Variations in applications have proven to be numerous. This mill was originally intended for fine grinding applications. Subsequent testwork and installations have demonstrated the mill can be utilized in place of ball mills as secondary mills. The following lists a few of the circuits tested: 1. Tower Mill secondary receiving feed from a primary SAG mill grinding stage. 2. Tower Mill as tertiary grind unit following a rod mill/ball mill. 3. Tower Mill as secondary grind unit following a primary ball mill. 4. Tower Mill as a limeslaker. 5. Tower Mill grinding as a primary unit taking limestone crusher discharge. Applications demonstrate the mill is energy efficient and is sensitive to the following consideration: 1. Circuit chosen. 2. Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.

"Organic smoothing additives are used to produce dense, thick, high-quality cathodes in copper electrowinning. Glue had been used traditionally and is still used in operations that do not employ solvent extraction to produce the electrowinning electrolyte. With the advent of solvent extraction–electrowinning, guar started to be used and remained in use for many years as it does not affect the phase disengagement in solvent extraction. Recently, however, guar has been replaced by less-expensive saccharide- and polyacrylamide-based additives. This paper is the first of a series of four papers that examine saccharides and polyacrylamides as new additives for copper electrowinning. A review of previous research related to copper electrowinning additives is presented here, along with a selected review of additives in other copper electrodeposition systems.IntroductionThe recovery of copper from solution by electrowinning was first practiced in the early 1900s, but it was the combination of solvent extraction with electrowinning (SX-EW) in March 1968 at the Ranchers Bluebird Mine (Kordosky, 1992) that changed the landscape for the electrowinning process. Most copper electrowinning capacity is now associated with solvent extraction, though some copper is still won directly from leach solutions (Robinson et al., 2013). The ability to produce high-purity copper cathodes from SX-EW has taken the continued improvement of SX-EW technology over the past more than 40 years.One of the technologies that has seen improvement is that of the organic smoothing agents used during the electrodeposition of copper in the tankhouse. These organic additives are added to the acidic copper sulfate electrolyte during electrowinning to improve the smoothness, brightness and density of the copper cathodes. The organic additives that are presently in use are different from those used in 1999 (Jenkins et al., 1999). Over the past decade, many tankhouses have replaced the use of guar-based organic additives with those derived from other saccharides. Until now, there has been no comprehensive publication in the open literature on the behavior of these additives during copper electrowinning."
