Bio-treatment of uranium contaminated soils from Fernald using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated. The experimental results showed that extraction of uranium upto 99 percent from soils were obtained with 10 percent pulp density suspension and with addition of iron (3000 mg/l) after bio-remediation time of seven days. Application of the results to industrial practices is discussed.

A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

Information will include operating companies, mine locations, ore grade, and chemical analysis, geological environment, and production capacities. General comments will be made on the distribution of production and its relationship with major consuming regions. The pattern for the future will be assessed, including potential new producers, changing specifications and industry structure.

A high effective method using a hammer mill, a column pneumatic separator and an electrostatic separator was studied for recycling copper from waste printed circuit board. The factors influencing the copper liberation degree and following separations were discussed. Two different physical separating methods were compared and discussed. Experiment results show that a well-controlled impact action can produce a satisfactory degree of copper liberation at a relatively coarse particle size. Around 90% copper recovery from printed circuit board for coarse particle size can be achieved by using a combination of electrostatic separation and pneumatic separation.

The indicator random function formalism allows a common coding of hard numerical data, constraint intervals, and soft qualitative information as prior probability distributions. The soft kriging algorithm allows interpolating these priors into posterior probability distributions of the unknown. The curse of ?negative kriged grades? is solved. The consideration of additional soft information, whenever deemed necessary, becomes possible within the framework of well-proven kriging techniques.

The appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt an X-ray CT analyzer for the determination of coal washability was developed and successfully tested for well-characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed X-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically, the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined. In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. Producing a sound plant design for a major project requires hundreds of engineers and many drawings. Economical accomplishment of this task is based upon careful and orderly organization of the design team so that at all times there is a complete and workable staff but at no time a surplus of costly talent. This paper will describe the various stages in the development of plant design which normally follow the laboratory and pilot plant investigations discussed in other papers today. An outline of the procedures used in the assembling of a project design group, within an established engineering organization will be presented. Actual procedures may vary according to the size and character of the plant, the special requirements of the owner, and the make-up of the engineering organization performing the design, but most of the points covered will be found to be basic to any plant design project.

At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

The Lake Merced Transport tunnel is 18 feet in diameter and 1.6 miles long constructed within dune sands, beach sands, and the Colma Sand Formation. It runs beneath highway right-of-way from an existing pump station near the shore of Lake Merced to a point near the Pacific Ocean, where it will connect with the existing transport/storage tunnel. The final tunnel lining was originally designed as a cast-in-place concrete lining to be constructed within steel ribs and wooden lagging initial support. The contractor opted to use a precast concrete segmental initial lining thus requiring a redesign of the final lining. The redesigned lining incorporates composite action from the initial lining thereby eliminating the need for outer steel reinforcement. A computer model was used for analyses which included operating conditions, ground and construction loads, and possible effects of liquefaction and earthquakes.

Cyprus Sierrita is a major producer of copper and molybdnum from its Sierrita and Twin Buttes open pit mines south of Tucson, Arizona. Both pits were started in the late 60's and are in excess of 1500 feet in depth. Sierrita has utilized a Cat 992C Remote Controlled Loader since January 1993. The loader was justified to increase SAFETY and PROFITS at Sierrita. It has exceeded all expectations. As of June 1993, it had produced additional profits totaling more than $1,500,000.

In the real world of coal mining, the bottom line for almost every support project decision is economic (i.e., what is it going to cost?). Up to this point, I have discussed the methods to improve the performance of typical support projects by better installation, materials, and techniques, thus lowering the impact of the bottom line cost. In this chapter, 1 shall explore what costs are relevant in mining construction, and how these costs are developed. The chapter centers around two major discussions: (I) developing cost accounting techniques, and (2) cost-estimating procedures for support construction. Each focuses on the fundamentals of practical cost considerations necessary for decisions on construction projects underground. Since cost accounting, economics, and investment planning are all subjects which warrant complete discussions on their own, this chapter will focus on distilling the important concepts required by a planning engineer into an easily understandable presentation.

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50 percent of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15-percent reduction in energy usage (kwh/t). These improvements have been made through optimization of grinding efficiency and use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory testwork and computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been increasing focus on environmental and social impacts of the extractive industries, climate change and resource scarcity. The concept of the circular economy aims to replaces the “take-make-dispose” economic model with one that eliminates waste of all kinds and is restorative by design. Such closed-loop systems implicitly aim to reduce the quantity of primary extracted materials entering the economy, thereby affecting supply and demand dynamics, hence mining industry economics. For the metals industry, the ability to engage in, or adapt to the circular economy can be heavily affected by industry structure and geographical factors. Eco-efficiency initiatives that reduce waste and environmental impact may help the mining and metals industry align with some of the goals of the circular economy. This paper focuses on base metals, and explores case studies in copper, lead and zinc. It analyzes primary and secondary metal production, and recycling. It examines company structures and how these affect engagement with the circular economy. CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2012) describes the circular economy as “an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design”, which “replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with restoration”, and “aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems, and, within this, business models”. The concept is systems focused. For materials such as metals, a series of loops are considered, including maintenance of devices, reuse, refurbishment and recycling. Potential methodologies to achieve circular economy outcomes include disassembly and reassembly of manufactured goods, leasing rather than buying major appliances, and converting to renewable energy sources. The circular economy is partially aligned with the principles of eco-efficiency, which relate to reducing the environmental impact per unit of a material produced. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METAL PRODUCTION Base metals (copper, lead, zinc and nickel) are essential ingredients in modern economies and are key commodities produced by the global mining industry. Metal production can be categorized as primary or secondary. Primary metal comes from the processing, smelting and refining of metal content extracted from ores, while secondary production comes from metals recovered from recycled streams (e.g. recycled lead-acid batteries, copper wire scrap, etc.). Metals are stored in natural, anthropogenic in-use and anthropogenic waste stocks. An example of the stocks, flows and processes associated with global copper extraction and use is shown in Figure 1."

Procedure for approval by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers of a new source of aggregate is in three phases. Phase 1 consists of an investigation of a quarry or proposed quarry by district geologist and laboratory geologist and/or petrographer. The quarry face or suitable outcrop is logged in detail or, if exposures are poor, cores may be taken to determine whether further investigations are warranted. Phase 2 consists of thorough laboratory testing. Cores and crushed material are subjected to a number of acceptance and quality tests for soundness, absorption, abrasion, reactivity, and other properties. Petrographic analysis is also made. Phase 3 is a physical and economic study of the site and involves determining quantity of stone avail- available, amount-and character of overburden, condition of haul roads and distance to rail shipping point, plant flow sheets and capacity, aggregate sizes produced, and approximate price of material at plant.

The objective of any business is to maximize the value derived from the commodity produced. There is a point where additional expenditure does not return a value sufficient to justify the additional expense. The treatment of high acid consuming copper ores is a perfect example of this principle in which the relationship of acid consumed to the percentage of Copper extracted is vital to the economic value of the final product. This paper describes a method of evaluating column leach test data to determine the economic optimum conditions for leaching high acid consuming copper ores. The effect of acid consumption on the net economic value of the Copper extracted is very significant in the case of high acid consuming ores. The focus of this paper is the relationship of acid concentration in the raffinate, and acid cure dosage to the economic value of a leach cycle.
