The materials used for the construction of buildings contain natural radionuclides of the U238 and Th232 series and are ? 50% due to land radioactivity. Another component of natural radioactivity is K40, with ? 40%. The presence of these radiopollutants in the final products (i.e. bricks, concrete) due to body irradiation is by two pathways: external irradiation and internal irradiation. External irradiation is due to gamma radiations emitted by Pb214 (RaB) + Bi214 (RaC) from the U238 series, by Ra228 (Mezothoriu I) + Ac228 (Mezothoriu II) + Tl208 (ThC??) from the Th232 series and by the K40 radionuclide. Internal irradiation is due to inhalation of radon (Rn222) and Rn220 (Tn) plus short life descendents (Po, Pb, Bi), radionuclides which are present in concrete. A fraction from radon present in concrete enters into a house leading to internal irradiation by inhalation. In Romania, the maximum concentration of radon allowed for new buildings is 200 Bq/m3.

It is hypothesized that the Hotelling valuation principle (HVP) can determine the value of developed gold reserves using simple methods and easily obtainable data. This paper reports the results of an empirical test of this hypothesis. The model for the HVP is given by [V R=Cp-0(1) or V - CP-0' R(2)] where p = current spot price of gold per oz, [c] = average extraction cost of gold per oz, V = current market value of the gold in the ground (dollars) and R = gold reserves (oz). Using publicly available data from North American gold companies, we obtained data for V, R, p and c, and we ran a simple linear regression using Eq. (1) as the definition of the dependent and explanatory variables. By examining the value of the coefficients of the resulting regression equation, we can draw conclusions as to whether or not the HVP can be confidently used as an estimator of the value of developed gold reserves.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. Red mud has been reported as a potential resource for lithium. To investigate the leaching behavior of lithium, a lithium-rich red mud was neutralized with hydrochloric or oxalic acid and then leached with acetic acid. When red mud was neutralized using dilute hydrochloric acid, about 58 to 60 percent of lithium was leached with 25 percent acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min, while more than 95 percent of sodium and 85 percent of calcium were dissolved in the leachate solution. When oxalic acid was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lower lithium leaching efficiencies of about 42 to 47 percent were observed. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the same conditions. In this study, 25 percent (v/v) of acetic acid at 85 °C for 60 min was demonstrated to be the optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid-neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results are useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

Introduction During the past decade a major objective of the process industry has been to use digital computer technology to improve plant operating efficiencies. This objective implied some form of optimization, a concept that has various interpretations depending on the view of the prospective user. For the purpose of this paper, optimization of a process plant is defined as the establishment and setting of plant operating conditions that maximize some mathematical yield function, i.e. maximum profit, minimum residue, etc. Analysis of these objectives and the available design and implementation techniques led to the conclusion that digital computer and optimization techniques are not the stumbling blocks, but rather the development and derivation of the mathematical models of the unit operations and process plants to be optimized. Such models should not only describe the optimized (steady-state) objective, but also how one steers to this state (control algorithm). Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the skills associated with the design and operation of process plants, the development of suitable models by a single discipline, such as the process control engineer, was found to be not only difficult but often impossible, due to budget and human resource limitations. To over-come these limitations, a computer aided design (CAD) tool has been developed. It aims to provide a productivity tool to the various disciplines, at the same time coordinating the technical input from each. The system described is but the starting point in an evolutionary development of a tool that, with use, is becoming more efficient and cost effective to use. Development has become an application engineering activity rather than the preserve of the computer specialist. Project phasing The development of a mathematical description of a process plant requires coordination of information from conceptual design to operation management. The activities required to build and operate a process plant are divided into four basic chronological activities or phases. These activities are often undertaken by different organizations and disciplines. As a result, continuity is often lost with the resultant loss of critical design data. The major activities are considered to be: conceptual and flowsheeting; detailing around the P & ID; building and commissioning; and plant operation. The CAD system described provides a design tool to be used for each of these activities, as well as providing continuity between the activities and the disciplines involved. The heart of the system is the dynamic simulation of the flowsheet. Each of the activities will be discussed, leading to two simple examples that demonstrate the use of the simulator. Figure 1 shows a schematic format of the various activities and the path followed by the dynamic flowsheet simulator in the life of a project. Flowsheet development The prime requirements in the design and develop¬ment of a process flowsheet are • selection of the correct unit operations to achieve the most economic (capital and operating) beneficiation of the specified reserve ; • the sizing of the unit operations to achieve the desired results, as a function of the projected feed rates etc., to handle the time related (dynamics) of the process; and • the production of a set of engineering documents showing the drawn and labeled flowsheet with an equipment list and process specification for each of the unit operations. The question may well be asked at this stage why dynamic flowsheet simulation should be considered when steady state modeling has been found to be adequate to date. With the increases encountered in the cost of capital, one often cannot afford the luxury of designing around the compounding worst case technique. Further, a more accurate design of the control surges can be achieved. No information is lost in that the steady state solution is in fact a subset of the dynamic model. In generalized state space modeling, the differential equations describing the process dynamics are illustrated in the following matrix notation: XDOT=A.X+B.U(1) Y =C.X+D.U(2) where XDOT describes the set of first order derivatives of the system state Vector, and X- is the system state Vector; A - is the system matrix operator which in the general nonlinear case is both a function of X and time ; U- is the process input vector; B - is the input mapping matrix; Y - is the set of observations; C - is the output mapping matrix which maps X - onto Y; and D- maps the input onto the observations. Thus, by time integration of the system dynamic equations, described in (1), the dynamic trajectory away from any set of initial conditions can be deter¬mined. Further, by finding the conditions at which XDOT = 0, the steady state solution can be determined.

Oklahoma is the only; state in the nation that is currently producing iodine. The iodine is extracted from iodine-rich natural brines being pumped from deep wells drilled into Pennsylvanian sandstones in the Anadarko basin of northwestern Oklahoma. Woodward Iodine Corp., started in 1977, was the first plant in the United States built for iodine recovery since the 1930s. At present, three companies are operating four iodine-producing facilities in northwestern Oklahoma. The combined production of these facilities, 1,321,000 kg in 1997, is about 26% of the U.S. annual consumption. Iodine is present in concentrations ranging from less than 100 ppm (parts per million) to as much as 1,560 ppm in brines in various Paleozoic strata in the subsurface of northwestern Oklahoma; these concentrations are exceptionally high, and are well above those of any other known brines in the world. Strata with the highest iodine content in the area (Mississippian limestones) have low permeabilities, and thus would yield only small amounts of brine. On the other hand, the lower Morrow sandstones (Lower Pennsylvanian) have a relatively high permeability and are capable of yielding large quantities of brine that average 300-350 ppm iodine. The Morrow brine reservoir was deposited in shallow-water-marine and intertidal-shelf environments and now is buried 6,000-10,000 ft below the land surface. Production is localized to Morrow channel deposits confined to an Early Pennsylvanian paleovalley that is 1-2 mi wide, is about 70 mi long, and is referred to informally as the "Woodward trench." All three companies are producing iodine-rich brines from Morrow sandstones in three different parts of the Woodward paleovalley, and one of the companies also is extracting iodine from oil-field brines coming from several petroleum reservoirs near Dover, about 80 mi east of Woodward. The basic extraction method employed by Woodward Iodine Corp. was used in Louisiana and California operations in the late 1920s. This method is commonly called the air-stripping process. Lower Morrow brine containing dissolved sodium iodide is pumped to the plant through a series of pipelines, where by-product natural gas is separated and processed. The brine is then acidified and subsequently oxidized with chlorine to convert the iodide to iodine. The iodine is air stripped and reabsorbed with sulfur dioxide and water, converting it to hydriodic acid, or process liquor. The process liquor is then processed, using chlorine once again, to crystallize the iodine as a solid. This is then melted and frozen to form a solid product, which is packaged in 110-lb (50-kg) drums and shipped to end users throughout the world.

The feasibility of maintaining equipment location, personnel location and vital statistics in surface and underground mining operations has increased with advances in radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The paper addresses the use of this technology, relatively new in the mining industry, to track surface equipment in mine pits, loading points, and processing facilities. Specific applications are discussed including a simplified and a complex truck tracking system and an automatic pit ticket system. The paper concludes with a discussion of the future possibilities of RFID technology in mining, such as monitoring biofeedback of personnel (heart and respiration rate, body temperature, exertion level, etc.) repetitious movements to study work habits, and logging air quality via personnel sensors.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of West Papua, Indonesia. Present production from PTFI’s DOZ Underground Block Cave Mine is approximately 40 thousand tonnes per day (ktpd). This paper describes the design process and recommended ventilation infrastructure necessary to expand the DOZ Mine reserves and to increase sustained daily production above 50 ktpd. The enlarged footprint will feature longer production panels of up to 650 m in length, more active draw points, a second large gyratory crusher, and additional men and mobile equipment. The increased ventilation capacity will be achieved through the development of new, dedicated ventilation drifts, and primary Underground exhaust fans.

A 32-channel warning system for high working level, fan operation, and airlock-doors has been constructed. The working level monitors have a microcomputer for accumulating the pulses, converting to working level, and triggering an alarm at a variable set point and at one working level. The system also detects when underground fans lose power or air doors are open. The system can detect changes in air velocity which indicate surface fan failures or changes in the ventilation system. Using this alarm system, the ventilation engineer will be alerted prior to excessive levels of radon daughters being reached so corrective action can be taken.

Subsurface construction projects are risky ventures and the decision to deliver a project using the Design-Build model does not eliminate those risks. Differing site conditions, inadequate design, and delays will continue to plague some projects. The Design-Build procurement model, however, presents a broad opportunity to allocate those risks much differently than in the familiar Design-Bid-Build model. Starting with a philosophical approach to risk and reward, this paper discusses the continuum of possible risk allocation strategies. It concludes with a proposed optimum strategy in terms of the project’s overall economic efficiency, and points to the dispositive contractual provisions that serve to contour the risks.

Based on current sedimentation theory an on-line thickener model was developed and coupled with an extended Kalman Filter to obtain additional information such as the compression zone level and concentration, a corrected underflow concentration, the inventory, and some rheological information. The on-line model was installed and tested for robustness for periods up to three days in an industrial environment giving good results. Emphasis was given to signal processing and selecting the appropriate input variables for filtering. The analysis of the thickener from a phenomenlogical point of view provides for better operation, establishes the limiting operating conditions, and assists in the design of control strategies.

In 1998, a group called Kentuckians for the Commonwealth filed an Administrative Petition with the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet to designate 8,903± hm2 (22,000± acres) on Black Mountain, which contains the state's highest point, as unsuitable for mining. A fast track legislative process was triggered that could have "taken" 91 Mt (100 million st) of coal reserves or, in the alternative, imposed severe restrictions on mining. Even with all parties represented by reasonable individuals, this process can be extremely cumbersome and expensive. The legal and technical preparation for this unusual hearing process as well as issues and strategies of the negotiated resolution are reviewed

This paper describes the shield excavation of twin transit tunnels, through soft ground, in downtown Seattle. The tunnels are 6.5 m (21.25 ft) diameter and 1525 m (5000 ft) long. Initial support consisted of expandable precast concrete segments, followed by a final lining of cast-in-place concrete. Waterproofing was provided by a PVC membrane installed between the initial support and the final lining. During the course of the excavation a variety of methods were used to control the ground and limit settlement. These included deep wells, vacuum well points, eductor wells, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, jet-grout underpinning, and extensive instrumentation.

"Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) have been widely used in underground coal mines in the U.S. for the detection of fire in the belt entry and monitoring of other ventilation-related parameters such as airflow velocity and methane concentration in specific mine locations. In addition to an AMS being able to detect a mine fire, the AMS data has the potential to provide fire characteristic information such as fire growth (heat release rate) and exact fire location. This information is critical in making decisions regarding fire-fighting strategies, underground personnel evacuation, and optimal escape routes. In this study, a methodology was developed to calculate the fire heat release rate using AMS sensor data for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and airflow velocity based on the theory of heat and species transfer in ventilation airflow. Full-scale mine fire experiments were then conducted in the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) Safety Research Coal Mine using an AMS with different fire sources. Sensor data collected from the experiments were used to calculate the heat release rates of the fires using this methodology. The calculated heat release rate was compared with the value determined from the mass loss rate of the combustible material using a digital load cell. The experimental results show that the heat release rate of a mine fire can be calculated using AMS sensor data with reasonable accuracy. INTRODUCTION Fires at different stages generate different gases and smoke toxicity hazards. When fires occur in underground mines, a significant amount of toxic gases and smoke enter the mine ventilation system and are carried throughout the mine ventilation network, increasing the hazard potential for personnel even if far away from the actual fire. Although fires that develop to the point of rapid flame spread pose imminent hazards, fires in their smoldering, pre-flaming stages can also contaminate the mine atmosphere with debilitating levels of smoke and toxic gases. The most important parameter for evaluating the fire hazard in mines is the heat release rate (HRR), which is directly related to the rate at which heat, smoke, and toxic gases are produced and transported by the ventilation system, and provides an indication of the time available for escape or firefighting [1]. The HRR is also an important input parameter to mine fire simulation models. Measuring the HRR of an actual fire can be a difficult task. Early experimental measurement of HRR focused on the heat output as represented by the temperature of the product gases. In ASTM E1321 (LIFT test), an array of thermocouples was positioned in a duct which captured all gaseous combustion products to measure their average temperature. This approach assumed the flow is adiabatic, which is never a reality. Significant progress on measuring HRR was made when Huggett showed that, for most common materials containing C, H, O, and N, the average heat release per unit mass of oxygen is 13.1 MJ/kg O2 [2]. Thus, the oxygen deficit is a measure of the HRR in the flow that the duct captures. This approach is termed oxygen consumption calorimetry (or the oxygen consumption method), and is widely used in the fire protection community."

Derivatised 2,4-diketopyrimidine groups have been anchored to planar gold surfaces as self¬-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for chemical and photochemical studies. Three derivatives, 5-methyluracil (thymine), 5-trifluoromethyluracil and 5-nitrouracil, were chosen for the specific moiety present at position C-5, which can exert strong or weak inductive effects on the adjacent aromatic ring. The measured acidity constants decrease from 5-methyluracil to 5-nitrouracil as the inductive properties of the group at C-5 position increase. When grafted to the surface the acidity constants increase, albeit still adhering to the expected inductive trend. The functionality also exerts an influence on the surface wetting properties. Surface wettabilities indicate that the orientation of the pyrimidine groups at the surface occurs so that the C-5 position has a direct effect upon the surface chemistry. Upon dimerisation the surface contact angles increase signifi¬cantly. At pH 11 the contact angle changes reflect that the dimer has a higher pKa than the monomer. The monomer surface is deprotonated at this pH while the dimer surface is partially deprotonated, leading to changes in contact angle of up to 22 degrees. Large changes in contact angle were observed for 5-nitrouracil which were independent of surface charge and were appar¬ently due to conformational changes alone. Electrowetting of three fluoropolymer surfaces by electrolyte solutions was studied with the sessile drop method. The electrowetting curve (contact angle/potential) is analogous to the elec¬trocapillary curve (surface tension/potential) and may be described by a combination of the Young and Lippmann equations. We demonstrate that for some specific surfaces a systematic deviation occurs at positive potentials. This departure is attributed to double layer effects, namely the adsorption of hydroxide and halide anions. pH, ionic strength and polymer composi¬tion can all influence electrowetting behaviour.

INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice. The Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada, commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable affecting the structural characteristics of the calcine, which in turn affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature has been closely monitored since October 2000. The original design temperature was 550° C. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500° C resulted in a gold recovery increase of more than six percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an ?intelligent? process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures, thus obtaining high gold recoveries of 92 to 93 percent. Under these conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease in gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g., porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.
