Simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments on a pyritic ore from Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, were carried out. Mineral characterization, agitated leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic tests results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted in a temperature range of 40 to 80 °C, an oxygen pressure range of 87.5 to 200 psi, and cyanide concentration range of 0.8 to 1.2 weight percent in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. Dissolution rates of 81 to 86 percent were achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 weight percent NaCN and processing time of one hour.

Comments The venerable straight-line equation Y = Bx + A is again being rediscovered, but this time by economists, mining engineers and geologists. Two economists, William Sharpe and Harry Markowitz, from the University of Chicago and Stanford University, respectively, won the 1990 Noble Prize in economics by showing that the price of individual stocks can be related to the Dow Jones industrial average (DJIA) using the straight-line equation. According to Bill Chidester, Investment Analyst, Scientific Investment, Sharpe and Markowitz strongly emphasized the role of the beta (B) value while considering the alpha (A) value to be "pretty unimportant." Chidester claims that alpha is the "mystery" value that causes individual stocks to behave independently of popular stock-market indices, such as the DJIA. For many years, mining engineers and geologists have routinely called alpha the "nugget" or surprise element in geostatistical analyses in which a designated distance (x-axis) is related to the variance of the grade (y-axis). Because the influence of the independent variable (distance) over the dependent variable (grade variance) is ideal when alpha is equal to zero, any increase in alpha represents a loosening of influence or control within the relationship. This can be good news or bad news - good news if you are an economist sorting out off-trend stocks and bad news if you are a mining engineer trying to predict sulfur in a coal seam. With many mining trends, such as those involving the relationship of distance to the variance of grade, a mathematical relationship can be formed. In geostatistical analysis, the point where a mathematical trend ends is known as the sill. If the difference between the variance of grade at the sill and at alpha can be determined, then an estimate of the relative control for a given distance can be obtained by comparing the sill value to alpha. The extent to which alpha approaches the value of the sill provides an indication of independence or loss of trend. The alpha concept may find application with distance, time or fluid problems. The point of change can be either a change in trend or the trend limit. However, even without a clearly defined point of change or trend limit, increasing alpha values always infer loss of trend. Alpha analysis should be regarded as a valuable tool when sorting out many sets of mining data. The application of this user-friendly concept to reserves, material transport, fluid flow and other areas has been, and will continue to be, the basis of many important past and future developments in mining and geology.

This paper presents a comparison study done at VTT's new pilot plant facilities in Outokumpu, Finland, for chromite ore. The ore was ground in a rod mill -, a ball mill - and high pressure roller mill - ball mill circuit in the capacity range of 0.5 - 3.0 t / h. The main grinding characteristics are discussed and the quality of the products are compared from the mineralogical point of view. The benefits of high pressure roller mill comminution for further mineral processing of chromite is also discussed.

INTRODUCTION During the last few years, several new ventilation developments have attracted the interest of mining engi¬neers. Some of these developments are applicable pri¬marily to hard-rock mining, while others are more applicable to coal mining. STOPPINGS Parachute Stopping The parachute stopping is a new type of quick-erect stopping that is intended for temporary use in hard-rock mines (Kissell, Thimons, and Vinson, 1975). As shown in Fig. 1, the stopping is shaped very much like an ordinary parachute, with a canopy of impermeable fabric that is sewn to regularly spaced straps running to a common point. To erect the stopping, the straps are attached to a fixed anchor point such as a roof bolt, and the edge of the canopy is lifted into the moving air¬stream. The airstream pops the parachute canopy into place, and the differential air pressure across the stop¬ping holds it in place, forcing the fabric against the walls, roof, and floor of the mine opening. The principal advantage of the parachute stopping is that it requires only a few minutes to install, making it a great time-saver for emergency use or for day-to¬day changes in ventilation during the production cycle. However, the parachute stopping does require some minimum air velocity to lift it and some minimum differential pressure to hold it in place. For a fabric weighing 0.27 kg/ m2 (8.0 oz per sq yd), the minimum air velocity is about 0.5 m/s (100 fpm), and the mini¬mum differential pressure is about 0.05 kPa [0.2 in. water gage (WG) ]. There is always some air leakage around the stop¬ping, mainly depending upon the extent to which pipes or other obstructions encumber the airway and prevent good sealing. Leakage of a few cubic meters per second (a few thousand cubic feet per minute) can be expected, unless foam is used to improve the seal at the edges of the canopy. Quick-Fix Blowout Stopping The quick-fix blowout stopping is a variation of the parachute stopping (Thimons and Kissell, 1976), and it is used in the proximity of blasting operations. This type of stopping is designed to be blown out easily by the blast forces, and it may be reinstalled quickly and easily. The long high-strength straps of the parachute stopping are replaced by groups of short straps that tear easily. These straps are attached at six equally spaced locations around the perimeter of the canopy. To erect the stopping, one strap of each of the six groups is fastened to the mine wall, roof, and floor by using spads, by setting pins with a powder-actuated gun, or by tying the straps to some firm anchor point. Once the straps have been attached, the differential air pressure across the stopping, which must be at least 0.025 kPa (0.1 in. WG), forces the stopping perimeter against the mine walls, thus creating the air seal. It is the self-sealing feature of this stopping that makes it a significant time-saver. Only a few attachment points are needed; in many cases, four attachment points are sufficient, since the stopping naturally tends to form a seal with the airway surfaces. When nearby produc¬tion blasting exerts excessive forces on the stopping, one or more of the straps tears away from its attachment point, protecting the stronger canopy from damage. Damage-Resistant Brattice The damage-resistant brattice is a stopping that is designed for use in mines such as salt and limestone mines where the differential pressures are low and the roof is relatively flat. As shown in Fig. 2, the damage-resistant brattice consists of a series of brattice panels that are hung vertically and joined by Velcro® connections. When the brattice is subjected to strong blast forces, the Velcro® connection peels apart and allows the panels to open without incurring damage. The Velcro® connections can be resealed by hand within a matter of minutes. Such damage-resistant brattices have withstood the blast effects of 318 kg (700 lb) of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosive detonated as close as 91 m (300 ft) from the brattice. Ordinary brattice cloth is used for the panels, with a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® hooks sewn along one edge of the length, and a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® pile sewn along the other edge. Both the hooks and the pile are sewn onto the same side of the brattice cloth. The resulting Velcro® seal formed be¬tween adjacent panels is perpendicular to the brattice itself, and the leading edge of the seal can be directed either toward or away from the blast forces; the brattice works equally well in either case. To hang the brattice, panels of brattice cloth about 0.9 m (3 ft) longer than the height of the airway are cut from a 1.8-m (6-ft) wide roll. The additional 0.9 m (3 ft) of brattice cloth allows 0.3 m (1 ft) for attachment to the roof by means of a board, with 0.6 m (2 ft) for forming a good air seal at the floor. Each brattice panel is wrapped once or twice around a 51 X 102 mm (2 X 4 in.) or 25 X 76 mm (1 X 3 in.) mounting board that is 254 to 305 mm (10 to 12 in.) shorter than the width of the panel. Air-supported belt conveyors-conveying systems that replace troughing idlers with a film of air-were a revolutionary concept when introduced in the 1970s. But high installation and operating costs limited their application. Now, system refinements have led to successful applications, even under the challenging conditions of mines and process plants. In this presentation the author will discuss the latest developments in the engineering of these systems, including the ability to retrofit existing transfer points with modular air conveyor components. Air conveyor applications and limitations in mineral-handling operations will also be examined.

In a study using butyl diglyme as an organic extractant, essen­tially complete extraction of gold from chloride leach solution was achieved. The extraction kinetics are so fast that the process could be completed in 30 seconds. Except for iron, co-extraction of other ionic species was insignificant. Co-extracted iron species were successfully scrubbed from the loaded organic using 10% HCl solution. High grade, >99.9%, gold was recov­ered from the loaded organic using 5% oxalic acid solution as the stripping agent at a temperature of 70°C to 80°C. Over 99% of the organic-loaded gold was stripped from the organic phase. The butyl diglyme extractant is being tested on a variety of gold-bearing feedstocks. Presented here are results obtained from two gravity concentrates.

Water & Earth Technologies, Inc. (WET), Habitat Management, Inc. (HMI) and Chevron Mining, Inc. (CMI) together developed a solution for reclaiming steep southwest facing slopes in mining Area 12C that have historically been prone to excessive erosion, low vegetation establishment and continuing maintenance. Area 12C is located in the east wing of the Chevron McKinley Coal Mine, 27 miles northwest of Gallup, New Mexico, on Navajo Nation land administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Mining in this area was completed in May of 2007. Challenges encountered for this reclamation project included the need to reclaim graded material on a slope of 18-35% with southwest facing aspect, the presence of undisturbed rock outcropping that needed to be avoided during reclamation, the operational need to limit bulldozer pushes and the inability to import or export additional materials for construction. Two different reclamation alternatives were considered for Area 12C. The first alternative would use a traditional reclamation approach including three levels of draining terraces designed to convey water on a 3% slope to a single riprapped down drain. Terracing and down drains have been used to reclaim areas with similar terrain conditions elsewhere at the McKinely Mine and have failed to adequately control erosion (Williamson 2006). Terrace overtopping and down drain blowouts have been issues in maintenance and functionality for the mine. Maintenance routines consist of cleaning out terraces where they have filled in with sediment and repairing damaged or blown out terraces and down drains.

The Hai-Shan No. 1 Coal Mine, located in northern Taiwan, is one of the typical coal mines on the island which, limited by natural condition, are mostly small in scale. With the advancing longwall method, the mine is now winning a seam, 80 cm thick, at a 32° dip, with a working depth of 824 m below surface. The annual output is about 50,000 mt of clean coal. At the working gallery, the virgin rock temperature may go up to 46°C, difficult to be brought dam to n acceptable level: because .of the tropical climate with high intake temperature and high humidity. Besides, at this depth, the intake air that goes down the long inclined shaft generates considerable heat due to autocompression. The mine is ventilated by a set of axial-flow fan with 38 m3/S of intake air at 2.2 KPA WG. With this volume of air, the temperature at the working-face is usually above 30°C WB. Appreciable lowering of the temperature is not expected even with an increased volume of ventilated air. For this reason, decision has. been made to try the installation of a pilot underground refrigeration unit near. the lowest gate road to cool the intake. air. from 32°C WB to 28°C WB which seems acceptable to on-the-spot workers exerting heavy physical labor. The experimental unit is designed for carrying away a total heat load of 90 Kw. The capacity of the unit is 200 Kw. The unit consists of a compressor, an evaporator, a condensor and a motor. The heat rejection is done in a cooling tower. Chilled water is circulated from the evaporator to the cooler by insulated pipes. The cooler consists of 90 Kw-coils with two fans and forces air by flexible ducting onto the working face. This paper examines mainly the effect of this additional reduction of working temperature, on working efficiency of the workers. Another aspect of this experiment is to evaluate the overall economy of underground refrigeration in small-sized coal mines under tropical condition. The success of such an experiment may lead to wider application of refrigeration to render many of the deeper mines economically workable.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines is conducting an assessment of mineral resources in the 36,800 km2 Mimbres Resource Area, southwestern New Mexico. Included in the assessment is a literature-based evaluation of sand and gravel that utilizes third party geologic information. The USGS has developed a method based on existing 1:500,000 scale geologic maps supplemented by remote sensing, statistical models, and point data such as test hole or pit records. The method defines the areal extent, quality, and quantity of aggregate.

The regional geological setting and nature of the serpentinized ultramafic rocks are described. It is postulated that lateritization started in Miocene time. Repeated uplifts led to at least four physiographic cycles and to the development of a mature lateritic soil profile. Complete profiles are subdivided from top to bottom as follows: Zone A - chocolate-brown limonite; Zone B - ochre-brown limonite; Zone C - soft serpentine; Zone D - hard serpentine; Zone E - serpentinized peridotite; Zone F - ultramafic rock. Zones A and F rarely attain ore grade. Canga is conspicuously absent. Rocky ore of Zones D and E amounts to 40%, limonite ore of Zone B to 25% of total ore reserves. Nickeliferous serpentine is the major crystalline phase in Zone C. In this zone and deeper, crystalline quartz occurs, particularly in fracture zones where nickeliferous cryptocrystalline quartz is of ten accompanied by garnierite.

Recent advances in virtual reality (VR) have resulted in major opportunities for improving the safety training of mine workers, supervisors and managers. VR has the potential to expose mine personnel to hazardous situations in a safe, highly visual and interactive manner. Customized simulations of mine layouts, dynamic operations and mine environment can be set up, and mine personnel can be allowed to move around the virtual mine, making decisions at key points. The consequences of both correct and incorrect decisions can be immediately fed back to the trainee.

More than two thousand abandoned mines within the Animas watershed in Southwestern Colorado are being prioritized for remediation by the Animas River Stakeholders Group (ARSG). Phased collection and assessment of information progressed from large scale to site specific. Prioritization was based on existing or potential environmental impact and technical feasibility of remediation as measured by dissolved Cd, Cu, and/or Zn in the discharge; indicators of habitat degradation; aquatic life in streams; cumulative impacts at the point of compliance; cost effectiveness; treatiblity/feasibility; and cultural and historic preservation.

Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are reexamined to compare the prospects of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

Permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established for gaseous pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and some gas-phase hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, as yet, no PEL recommended for diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA), nor is there a standard method for sampling this aerosol. The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size-selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in underground coal mines that use diesel equipment. The mine mean DEA concentrations for the five mines surveyed, determined with the PDEAS in the haulageway, was 0.89 mg/m3 with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3. DEA contributed 52 % of the respirable aerosol at this location. In three of the mines filter samples were collected for DEAassociated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biological activity determinations. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust. In general, the PAH and biological activity levels were similar for all three mines, and indicate that up to 25 % of the haulageway concentrations may be contributed by outby diesel vehicles. Measured concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. INTRODUCTION Diesel exhaust contains pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and gas-phase hydrocarbons, as well as DEA. Much of the health-related concern focuses on DEA and associated organic compounds (Watts, 1992a). A wide variety of these PAHs have been identified and some are known carcinogens and/or mutagens. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has proposed new PELs for these and other contaminants (MSHA, 1989). MSHA has also published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a separate PEL for diesel particulate (MSHA, 1992). The U.S. Bureau of Mines has collaborated with the University of Minnesota to develop and field test a PDEAS. The PDEAS is a three stage sampler based on the MSA' personal respirable dust sampler. It utilizes a respirable cyclone preclassifier followed by a 0.8 µm cut point impactor and afterfilter operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min. Respirable aerosol greater than 0.8, µm in size is collected by the impactor while DEA, less than 0.8 µm in size, is collected by the afterfilter. Hence, gravimetric analysis of the afterfilter permits measurement of DEA concentrations. This development and laboratory evaluation of the PDEAS were described previously by Cantrell (1990) and Rubow (1990). During field tests of the sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in continuous miner sections of five underground coal mines that use diesel haulage equipment. These air quality measurements included levels of selected PAH and biological activity associated with DEA collected in the intake and haulageway areas of three of the five underground mines, and CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 in two of the mines. The objectives of this paper are to present the DEA and associated pollutant concentrations measured in these mines and to assess the impact of diesel face-haulage equipment on underground mine air quality. MINE DESCRIPTIONS The mines used for the PDEAS evaluation were designated J, K, L, N, and 0. Mines K, N, and 0 are located in the Western United States, while mines J and L are located in the East. Each mine produces high volatile, bituminous coal with shift production levels varying from 500 to 2000 tons/section. Seam heights varied from 1.5 to 3.0 m. Mines K and N use continuous mining to develop longwall panels. The others are strictly room-and-pillar operations using continuous miners. The number and types of diesel-powered vehicles used at these mines were described by Watts (1992b). Mines J, K, N, and 0 use diesel power to assist in a wide range of activities in addition to coal haulage. These included road maintenance, personnel and materials transport, lubrication, and welding. Mine L used only three diesel-powered shuttle cars to haul coal. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS METHODS Aerosol Measurements Aerosol samples were collected in the mine portal area, the clean air intake to the continuous miner section, the haulageway one crosscut inby from the feeder breaker and belt, in the return airway, and on selected personnel. The haulageway sampling site was located near the point where the diesel-powered shuttle cars turn around to dump their loads. Additional respirable and DEA samples were collected and have been reported by Haney (1990).

This paper describes two new gas diagnostic techniques which have been used successfully to determine: 1) the combustion status of underground mines which have been sealed due to fire (Littol1 Ratio); and 2) the location of fires in abandoned, underground mines or waste banks (Kim Ratio). The Litton Ratio makes use of the rate of change of CO, calculated on both an air-free and methane-free basis, from mine gas samples and compares these values with those expected from a normal, combustion-free environment. The Kim Ratio uses the concentrations of total hydrocarbons, C2 ?C5, less the methane, to arrive at ratio values which increase as combustion intensity increases. The details of these two new techniques, their application to real situations, and their limitations will be discussed.

Everyone knows the importance of careful handling of explosives. Even so, the point is on occasion all too graphically driven home. Witness the recent blast at a Utah explosives plant that killed five people. Part three of this series on explosives discusses transportation, storage, handling, and destruction. Federal, state, and sometimes local regulations govern the many steps involved in transporting, storing, and handling explosive materials. Regulations minimize personnel exposure to hazardous material and insure that the explosives remain stable and usable.

This paper presents a theoretical tool used to analyze gold recovery problems at Dee Gold Mining Co. The first step in addressing the problem was realizing that lower gold extraction was linked to high silver grades, and could not be correlated to either the carbonaceous or sulfidic content of the ore. Analyses of metallurgical testwork, blasthole, and mill recovery data demonstrated that decreases in gold extraction correlatP� well to increases in silver extraction. Figure 1 illustrates this for 1991 mill operations. This was the starting point for the work described in this paper.
