Weathered mine waste consists of oxidized primary minerals and chemically unstable secondary phases that can be sources of readily soluble metals and acid rock drainage. Elevated concentrations of metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are observed in deionized water-based leachate solutions derived from complex sedex and Cu-Pb-Zn mine wastes. Leachate (USGS FLT) from the Elizabeth mine, a massive sulfide deposit, has a pH of 3.4 and high concentrations of Al (16700 ug/L), Cu (440 ug/L), and Zn (8620 ug/L). Leachate from the sedex Faro mine has a pH of 3.5 and high concentrations of Al (2040 ug/L), Cu (1930 ug/L), Pb (2080 ug/L), and Zn (52900 ug/L). In contrast, higher-pH leachates produced from tailings of polymetallic vein deposits have order of magnitude lower metal concentrations. These data indicate that highly soluble secondary mineral phases exist at the surface of waste material where the samples were collected. Sulfide minerals from all sites exhibit differential degrees of weathering, from dissolution etched grain rims, to rinds of secondary minerals, to skeletal remnants. These microscale mineral-dissolution textures enhance weathering and metal leachability of waste material. Besides the formation of secondary minerals, sulfide grains from dried tailings samples may be coated by amorphous Fe-Al-Si minerals that also adsorb metals such as Cu, Ni, and Zn.

12.1-BASIC AND PARAMETRIC CRITERIA IN THE SELECTION, DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERGROUND MINING SYSTEMS STEFAN H. BOSHKOV AND FRED D. WRIGHT The criteria governing the selection of an underground mining system relate to several factors the importance of which varies with geographic location, the state of development of the industrial technology, the economic climate in the Nation and, perhaps, in the world-all these as functions of time. Thus, the best choice of a mining method depends upon sets of definable and undefinable values for numerous factors that may be considered fixed at the precise point in time. Subsequent changes in economic and/or technological developments may necessitate modification or complete revision of the existing mining system. A classification of criteria for selecting a mining system must be based on the broadest definitions. Specific cases may present simple solutions or pose very intricate questions, the answers to which are frequently based on judgment rather than explicit logically reasoned and derived results. Specific criteria may be of negligible consequence in some instances and of overriding importance in other cases. It would be foolhardy to attempt to point out, in the limited space available, all possible variations and interplay of factors, as well as to define the setting in which this interplay can take place. The reader is, therefore, referred to the case histories described in the subsequent parts of this section where actual practice will point out the variability of the problems encountered in the selection of a mining method. A popular thesis suggests that the proper approach to selecting the method of mining should be rooted in the inverse solution, whereby the limitations of the various methods in use serve as criteria to eliminate most of these methods from consideration in the specific case. This narrows the ultimate selection to one or perhaps two most appropriate methods. At this stage, a critical comparison analysis will lead to the ultimate choice. Although such a negative approach un¬questionably is valid in discarding obviously inapplicable mining systems from consideration, it falls short in defining the best system, which in practice quite often turns out to be a variation of a textbook standard, or a combination of two or more such standards. Because the deployment of capital and manpower over a long-term commitment closely follows the selection of the mining system, the decision-maker can well afford to spend a great deal of time and effort in evolving the optimum solution for the peculiarities of his specific case. Within the basic engineering tenets of economy and safety to which the design of a mining system must adhere lie numerous factors of constraint which may be grouped, somewhat arbitrarily but for ease of discussion, into several categories. The criteria that enter into the choice of a mining method derive from the following groups of factors: 1. The shape, size and spatial position of the ore deposit.

A thorough improvement in mine safety is contingent on many factors that require scientific decision-making for selection and prioritizing of important factors for safety improvement. Their analysis using an established scientific method can improve mines’ safety conditions and assist the administration for informed decision-making. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. In the evaluation index, 27 significant factors of safety are identified and categorized into 7 criteria. The proposed evaluation system analyzes all indicators according to Pakistan’s current mine safety situation and their significance for potential safety improvement in the future. Results reveal that current safety practices are outdated due to a lack of mechanization in the mining industry and minimal capability of the management to achieve the desired safety targets. Appropriate safety policies and safety education are missing in the daily working environment. The lack of overseeing the execution of safety operations and the lack of ambition and strong work ethic workers contribute to the paucity of mines’ safety conditions. The prevention and control systems to manage risks and hazard are not in place, and the working environment in mines remain difficult. Therefore, to have enhanced mine safety, important factors can be addressed in chronological order, as presented in this paper. The proposed methodological approach can be applied to other prioritization applications to analyze the indicators and determine the appropriate management strategies.

Precast concrete segments have been used in sanitary sewer tunnel design for decades. Federal mandates (reduction in heavy metals and I & I), and system design changes (increased retention times) and other factors have exacerbated corrosion problems. In an effort to combat the ever-growing effect of microbiologically induced corrosion, owners, engineers, and designers have been specifying thin-film lining systems to protect precast concrete segments. These systems have compatibility and installation issues. Chemical additives or calcareous aggregates have been utilized in precast concrete, but have only proven to retard the rate of corrosion and do not eradicate the problem. Solid cast polymer segments are stronger than precast concrete, do not require linings or coatings, are impervious to ground water infiltration, and, above all, are inherently corrosion resistant through and through.

To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m, while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m. The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined. Methane gas caused an eight-month shutdown of mining operations at the Mill Creek, Phase 3, Tunnel. The gas-related shutdown occurred as the tunnel was advanced to an approximate distance of 2,700 feet, which constitutes approximately18% of the total tunnel length. The construction of an emergency ventilation shaft, a comprehensive program of de-gassing wells and an expanded gas monitoring system were used to mitigate the gas condition. When complete, this tunnel will be utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from a portion of Cleveland, Ohio and ten suburbs. This paper will provide an overview of gas related remedial measures and explain how these measures were integrated into the project to ensure safe tunneling conditions.

Technical Papers, Mining Engineering Vol. 49, No. 12, pp. 70-75, Discussion by McIvor, R. and Fink, R. P. We must challenge what we consider to be dubious statements in the above-mentioned article. Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net-zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields, leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options for students. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that are suited to the contemporary and future mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, upskilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more. In countries like Australia, where mining plays a crucial role in the economy, the need for curriculum updates is more pressing than ever. As the mining industry evolves with new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a growing demand for a workforce skilled in these modern approaches. Recognizing this necessity, universities such as the University of New South Wales and Curtin University have taken significant steps to revamp their educational programs. By updating their academic offerings, both universities aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills to drive innovation and sustainability in mining, supporting Australia’s development as a leader in this critical sector. Moreover, the selection of topics that drive curricula update and the focus of the research institutions in mining engineering must extend beyond mere technological and technical aspects to include social and ethical dimensions. In this context, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in association with the Colorado School of Mines, has introduced the topic of humanitarian engineering (HE) in 2020. HE is a sociotechnical approach that focuses on developing engineering solutions that promote the sustainable development of communities addressing their basic needs and aiming to improve their quality of life (Menéndez-Aguado et al., 2023; Smith et al., 2023). By focusing on sustainable development, community engagement and equitable resource distribution, HE helps the industry build positive relationships with stakeholders, reduce conflicts and foster social license to operate. As the mining industry seeks sustainable and socially responsible practices, future engineers require training in this area to understand the broader impacts of their work, fostering a mindset that prioritizes community well-being and environmental stewardship alongside technical proficiency. However, developing skills toward humanitarian engineering and sustainable mining among new generations of mining professionals remains a complex task. Integrating the necessary content to prepare future engineers for the multifaceted demands of the industry into a single study program poses significant challenges. To address these complexities, modern educational approaches such as the ones integrated in the mining engineering programs at Clausthal University of Technology can be leveraged to enhance both teaching and learning experiences (Binder, 2024b; Bothe-Fiekert et al., 2023; Nowosad et al., 2024). Innovative teaching methods, such as blended-learning, project-based learning, case studies, scenario simulations and interdisciplinary collaborations, can help bridge gaps by fostering critical thinking, creativity and empathy among students. By embracing modern pedagogical strategies, institutions can better equip future engineers to navigate the evolving landscape of the mining industry responsibly and effectively.

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. I A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches I) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, 2) empirical, based on empirical design formulae, and 3) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools was addressed earlier (Basu and Kuruppu, 1995). The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing structures applicable to mining geomechnics. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis application in excavation design.

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

Many technology problems must be solved if we are to continue to produce phosphate at our current rate of consumption. The U.S. produces at least 25% of the world's phosphate, 40 million tons of phosphate rock per annum with most of the production coming from Florida. Of particular concern are improved separation efficiency and the ability to treat new dolomitic resources. Phosphate flotation technology needs include: 1. Simplification of the standard flowsheet 2. Improved recovery of coarse phosphate 3. Selective flotation for phosphate recovery from dolomitic resources Preliminary results, including tests on plant feed from Florida show that these objectives may be achieved with a new collector chemistry depending on the specific circumstances. The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the preliminary results from single stage flotation experiments both at the University of Utah laboratories and at Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) laboratories. In the best case, from these experiments with low grade (5% P2O5) coarse feed (16x35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95 % was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31 % P2O5. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collector. Based on these results it seems that a one step process may be possible for phosphate flotation and a research program is justified for the development of this new flotation strategy.

Explosions and fires originated from longwall gob due to the formation of methane-air mixture have been a severe threat to coal miner’s lives.Many numerical studies on coalmine fire and explosion hazards have focused on the airflow in roadways and mine gobs. However, most of these studies isolate the gob from its surrounding roadways, and the network analysis and the CFD method are applied independently tomodel the two classes of airflows. This approach greatly limits the ability of simulatingmine ventilation flow, especially unable to consider the effects of gob boundary conditions on air exchange between the gob and the surrounding airways. An innovative finite tube method (FTM) is developed to couple the one-dimensional mine ventilation network (MVN) and the 2D/3D gob flow field (GFF). In FTM, GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes each of which is formed by any two adjacent stream lines. These tubes, representing the gob’s field flow, connect the MVN into a new coupling network. To solve the coupling model betweenMVN and GFF, an iterative solution technique is developed inwhich the MVN analysis is used to evaluate the boundary pressures for GFF simulation and in turn the FTM feeds the GFF results back to the coupling network. Based on the FTM approach, a model for gas migration in gob has been established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion. A computer program is developed to implement the FTM simulation. An illustrative example with five flow tubes representing the GFF is created to verify the stability and convergence of the FTM solution process. A simulation example also indicates that the accuracy of FTM is improved by 12% compared with previous method. Results of an application case show that the program is capable of quantitatively evaluating the gob’s risk zones prone for spontaneous combustion and gas explosion as well as performing risk analysis for various ventilation scenarios.

The vast majority of U.S. coal preparation plants utilize screen-bowl centrifuges to dewater their fine clean coal products. In light of this popularity, researchers at Virginia Tech have engaged in a variety of laboratory and industrial field test programs to develop technological enhancements that have the potential to further improve the performance of this important solid-liquid separation process. These enhancements, which include simple design modifications and new reagent packages, have been shown to significantly improve solids recovery and reduce product moisture in several experimental trials.

This study utilized experimental and numerical simulation methods to investigate and analyze the atomization characteristics of three internal air–water mixed atomizers under different operating conditions. By comparing the research results, the effective dust control working parameters for the application of the selected atomizer in the engineering field were determined. Firstly, the atomization characteristics of the three atomizers were studied using a customized experimental system. The results indicated that nozzle 2 had a wide atomization range, a small atomization distance, and small droplet size; nozzle 3 had a narrow atomization range, large droplet size, and fast atomization speed; and nozzle 1 not only had a large atomization range but also could produce droplets of dry mist size with fast atomization speed, meeting the dust reduction requirements of the Majiliang Coal Preparation Plant. Secondly, Fluent software was used to simulate the atomization process and particle size distribution of the three internal mixed atomizers, determining the working conditions of the atomizers, the required number of atomizers, and the application angle of the atomizers in the internal mixed dust removal system. Finally, the atomized dust control system was applied on-site, achieving a total dust removal efficiency of 90.72% and a respirable dust removal efficiency of 89.75%.

The 26th international APCOM symposium, hosted by The Pennsylvania State University, was held Sept. 16 to 20, 1996 in University Park, PA. Conducted about every 18 months throughout the world, APCOM symposia focus on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. The APCOM International Council is the governing body of the symposia and determines the symposium’s locations and sponsorships. This group is composed of the nine permanent (voting) members. They include the University of Arizona, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Technical University of Berlin, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The three nonvoting members are Moscow Mining Institute, China Institute of Mining and Rudarski Mining Institute of Slovenia.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize productivity, the influence of reclamation parameters must be well understood ? which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass appraisals, and also the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, we use biomass production experimental plots on reclaimed mine sites established by the Powell River Project (PRP) for a comparative study between satellite measurements of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and inventory estimates of biomass under a variety of conditions. The PRP is a unique public-private partnership in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia dedicated to enhancing beneficial use and environmental protection of mined lands.

Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. "INTRODUCTION Shotcrete lining forms an integral part of conventional tunneling and is widely applied for underground excavations. Early strength gain of the shotcrete is a crucial aspect for ground support and safety of operatives. Strength requirements are dependent on various factors such as lining thickness, ground type, excavation size and tunnel depth. The early strength gain is typically monitored using destructive tests, such as needle penetration, stud driving or coring samples for uniaxial compressive strength testing in the laboratory. Being destructive, these tests cannot be directly performed onto the lining without causing damage that must be repaired, which is a particular problem for permanent linings. For this reason and to avoid the need for operatives to work near to exposed ground and/or fresh shotcrete, these destructive tests are often performed on panels, which are sprayed at the same time as the tunnel lining. All current testing methods are also very local, testing only a small part of the lining or a panel, which may not be representative because the temperature history could be significantly different. Therefore, these tests do not provide an accurate or complete picture of the lining strength gain. New testing methods that are non-destructive and can scan the whole lining remotely would be extremely desirable. This paper describes a new method, using thermal imaging techniques, that achieves these aims. It also discusses the real-time on-site application of the method, providing insight into the experience gained and conclusions derived. Shotcrete Shotcrete used for tunnel linings requires immediate strength development. The strength development is a direct result of the hydration reaction of cementitious materials present in it. A progressive sequence of the hydration reaction changes it from a solid suspension (typically referred to as fresh concrete) to a solid skeleton with a porous network and thereafter, into a solid with predominantly discontinuous pores (Byfors 1980). In the case of shotcrete, early strength is needed to support the self-weight and then continuing early age strength gain is required to begin to support ground loads. These strength requirements, along with other workability needs, are met by careful concrete mix design, the use of admixtures, such as accelerator and superplasticizer (BS EN 934-5 2007), and supplementary cementitious materials, such as silica fume."

A glance at the accompanying table reveals that for the first time in many years the industrial minerals field did not post significant gains in production. Gypsum, cement, sand and gravel, and crushed stone production-which are very sensitive to construction industry performance-barely managed to stay even, or in fact, declined slightly. Even barite production, in spite of increased oil and gas drilling, was off 5% in 1979 from 1978. Domestic fluorspar production continued to decline while imports, primarily from Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, rose 11%. Worldwide production of iodine (which is used primarily as a catalyst, animal feed additive, and in ink and colorants, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, and disinfectants) grew about 9% on a worldwide basis-from 10.75 Tg to 11.16 Tg. This does not include US production. The two US producers increased demand as apparent domestic production increased about 5%. Increasing energy costs and the transportation situation have had a prohibitive effect on the industrial minerals field. The critical shortage of railroad cars, according to consultant Neil Johnson, is due to several factors: • High capital investment rind interest rates needed to build new equipment, • Accidents, obsolescence, and failure to repair equipment reduced car availability, •Reduction in some train schedules due to fuel economy, and •Increased turnaround time as a result of new safety regulations. Railroad rates have increased an average of 7% per year for the past 10 years. Last year's increases were about 11.1% due to fuel costs and surcharges. Truck shipments have increased their penetration in certain areas of the southeast because of the shortage of box cars and the producers' demand for quick shipment. Some producers report a 15-20% increase in truck use. In the feldspar-mica area, which formerly made most shipments by rail, trucks are now used for about half the shipments. Marketing prices, as expected, increased due to higher costs for energy, power, labor, and supplies used in production. Estimated average price increases were about 10% which, in many cases, did not cover increased production costs. These factors-rising energy costs and the critical transportation situation-resulted in an unsatisfactory year for industrial minerals. Stanley J. Lefond Cnntrihuting Editor
