The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. The purpose of this paper is to inform members of the coal producing and consuming community about techniques used by The Carter Mining Co. to control product quality at a large surface coal mining operation. During the early years of mining operations, coal quality received adequate attention but the company's main emphasis was to build up its production rate and minimize mining costs. While these goals are still of prime importance, coal quality has received additional attention in recent years. An objective that no coal shipment should exceed any contract or company-imposed coal quality specification has been successfully met. To implement this guideline, geology and coal quality modeling procedures were improved, in-pit drilling and blending programs were refined, and detailed shipment procedures were developed.

Under special circumstances, electrical energy can successfully replace chemical ex­plosives for blasting rock. High pressure plasma can be generated in the confines of a drillhole, by a powerful electrical dis­charge. The energy level can be adjusted to replicate the effect of a high explosive. The main difference is the almost total ab­sence of gas generation with electric blast­ing. Once the rock fractures, the small amount of matter used for generating the plasma rapidly cools off and regains its former volume. High speed film studies clearly show, that the initial speed of blasted rock fragments is the greatest, no further gas propelled acceleration takes place .. Figure 1, shows a typical electric blast of an oversize boulder of quarzite in an open pit mine.

Widely available silver and arsenic bearing concentrates can be smelted to produce a discardable slag, a base metal speiss, and a crude silver button which is easily separated from the other phases after solidification. This paper discusses the development of a novel process as an alternative to existing nitric acid leach methods for the production of high purity silver from the raw silver button. Direct electro-refining of the raw silver anode in a sulphate medium is integrated with downstream purification and recycling modules that are customized to allow efficient recovery of silver and saleable by­products. The test results, flowsheet alternatives and process details are presented and discussed in terms of overall technical feasibility, economical viability and environmental compliance considerations.

This paper examines the process options available for treatment of "refractory" gold ores. As more and more of the easily leached oxidized gold ore zones are exhausted, the pressure is on to find more economical ways of treating refractory gold ore deposits. Historically, refractory ores were generally concentrated, e.g. to make a flotation concentrate that could be roasted. A major development is taking place in the USA in which ores from which gold cannot be concentrated well by flotation are being treated using whole ore oxidation processes prior to cyanidation. Refractory gold ore treatment processes are generally expensive to install and operate. Thus, for a refractory gold ore project to be economically viable, the grade must generally be higher than for free milling gold ores.

The problem of surface subsidence over abandoned mine lands is becoming more common due to the development of housing in suburban areas of abandoned mined lands. Subsidence can induce damage to estate properties, engineering structures and the environment. Houses, buildings, roads and utility pipelines may be fractured or broken or may collapse due to subsidence. The ground surface may be depressed and sink gradually or suddenly. The surface and subsurface water flow may be disrupted causing a change in flow pattern or depression of the water table. However, techniques for predicting abandoned mine subsidence are not yet well developed. Presently, one cannot predict when and where mine subsidence will occur. People have to wait until it occurs and then apply a suitable measure to remedy the damages.

FMC Gold Company start.ea processing ore at their Paradise Peak Mine in 1986. Gold, silver and mercury haye been produced from the Merrill-Crowe milling circuit and from heap leaching. There are three heap leach circuits, Paradise Peak, Ketchup Flat and County Line. The Paradise Peak and Ketchup Flat heap effluent solutions are routed into the zinc precipitation plant which is associated with the mill for recovery of the precious metals. The County Lne hea lech circuit is a stand-alone operation, again with a zinc precipitation recovery circuit. The mill was shut down in May, 1993 due to depletion of ore reserves with the remainder of the heap leach ore due to be placed on the leach pads by late summer of the same year.

In this paper, a semi-qualitative methodology is presented and then applied to an aluminium extrusion industrial facility in order to perform an initial environmental assessment. The results of the assessment enable an improved understanding of the environmental performance of the facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. Following, the application of case-specific sustainability indicators related with the areas of significant environmental concern, leads to a more comprehensive sustainability assessment. The applied two-step approach offers a quick and reliable environmental assessment and help focusing on the most environmentally problematic areas. Moreover, the follow-up of the specific indicators seems to be appropriate for the improvement of the environmental performance of the examined industrial facility.

The handling of radioactive waste deposits from factories that produce chemical fertilizers is a difficult problem, but has a great significance for soil quality and for the environment. The Romanian legislation has produced law and normative acts concordant with EU regulations for prevention and protection, and also for environmental contamination control with radionuclides. The soils and agricultural plants in the vicinity of phosphogypsum deposits are radioactively contaminated; the annual variability of the respective radioactivity values is demonstrated by annual records. Residual radioactivity monitoring determines the presence of radioactive ions in the soil and cultivated plants: wheat, maize, sunflower, as well as the spontaneous flora. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that ecological restoration works must be executed for degraded soils due to impacts of radioactive materials.

This work concentrates on investigating the development of a geotechnical classification method for the Greek soils, which can readily provide a rough but usable estimate of the main strength parameters of the soil. It is expected that such a system will be useful to the structural engineer for either checking the laboratory results or for providing a direct estimate in cases where no tests have been conducted. The method provides strength parameter values by relating classification or physical parameters of various types of soils and/or in situ observations of geological and physiographical nature to the strength parameters, such as, cohesion, angle of internal friction, compressibility, modulus of elasticity, etc, by means of a statistical approach and the extraction of empirical formulae.

There are about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of discarded dolomitic-limestone tailings from the Gays River lead/zinc mining operation in Nova Scotia currently stockpiled in a tailings pond at the mill site. Neutralization effectiveness similar to an agricultural grade limestone and low contents of residual metals make the tailings a potential source of soil conditioner material for the local market. However, the fine particle size, 98% passing 147 pm (about 100 mesh), and a moisture content of 20% make their handling, shipping, and application to soils difficult. The tailings were agglomerated into small hard pellets with various amounts of soil nutrients, moisture content less than 13%, and pH values ranging from 6.5 to 8.7.

The US Bureau of Mines is using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis to investigate the bonding mechanisrn that occurs during the dewatering of clay slurries. High-molecular-weight polymers are used as flocculating agents in these processes. This investigation presents the results of an FT-!R study of calcium-exchanged montmorillonite treated with polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). Both thin film and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopic techniques were employed to study this clay polymer system. Results suggest PAM is adsorbed to the clay via the nitrogen atom of the polymer. A waterbridge is involved in the bonding between the clay at d PEO. Evidence also suggests that PEO may be adsorbed directly onto the surface of the clay.

Bacterial pretreatment was evaluated as a process for enhancing gold recovery from a refractory ore from Newmont Cold's Cold Quarry deposit. This ore is refractory due to sulfide locking of the gold and preg-robbing carbon. The microbe Thiobacillus ferrooxidans effectively oxidized the sulfide component of the ore, but the preg-robbing carbon continued to be active. Thiourea was examined as an alternative to cyanide for extraction of the gold from the biooxidized ore. The thiourea, coupled with CIL, was effective for gold extraction resulting in up to 89% gold recovery for the sulfidic-carbonaceous refractory ore. The thiourea gold complex appears not to be bound by the preg- robbing carbon of the ore when in the presence of recovery carbon (CIL)

This paper deals with the mining techniques employed at Canada Tungsten's northern Canadian operations, particularly with respect to their effect on productivity, safety, and stability of relatively large underground openings. The ore body was originally mined commencing in 1974 using conventional pneumatic jumbos in a topslice and horizontal benching room and pillar layout. Pillar stability became an increasing problem as mining progressed, leading to a re-examination and ultimately a conversion of mining method. Rock mechanics considerations and the effect of extraction rate on ground control costs and conditions are analyzed. Other areas discussed concern the results acheived through the use of large diameter I.T.H. drills, radio remote controlled L.H.D. units, and a unique system of hydraulic backfill placement.

Experiment shows that the microbial degradation of pyrite does not necessarily proceed stoichiometrically. Under some conditions sulfur is oxidized preferentially leaving something approaching iron in composition; under others, the pyrite is converted almost to elemental sulfur. A kinetic model for the process based on three elementary biochemical reactions can explain these observations. The diffusion of sulfur along grain boundaries and dislocations in the solid pyrite uncouples the oxidation rates of sulfur and iron from the requirements of stoichiometry. This mechanism also explains qualitatively why bacteria adsorb preferentially at dislocation sites on pyrite surfaces, why they form "pits" at these sites, and why amorphous pyrite is more readily degraded than pure crystals. It has been discovered that water insoluble alcoholic solutions of alkyl hydroxamic acids serve as selective collectors for the flotation of phosphate mineral resources (Miller et al., 2000). The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the results from single stage bench scale flotation experiments for feed material from plants in Florida, North Carolina, and Utah. In the best case, from experiments with low grade (5% P20,) coarse feed (16 x 35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95% was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31% P20,. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collectors as is evident from a comparison of the respective grade/recovery curves.

Introduction Many gold and silver ores are refractory to conventional processing technologies. Thus, precious metals recovery is uneconomic. These resources can consist of ores, flotation concentrates, mill tailings, and other reserves. The refractory nature of these materials can be ascribed to such components as iron sulfide minerals, silica minerals, tellurides, organic compounds, and sulfosalts. Precious metals locked within iron sulfide minerals account for a large number of refractory gold ores. These minerals consist principally of pyrite or arsenopyrite. They must be oxidized to liberate the encapsulated precious metal and allow its contact with the leaching agent. Carbonaceous gold ores represent a unique class of refractory precious metal ores in general. Not only does gold encapsulation by iron sulfide minerals occur (Hausen, 1985), but these ores also contain organic matter that interferes with gold recovery by cyanidation. Direct interference can be attributed to either occlusion of gold within organic matter or formation of a stable gold-carbon complex. The magnitude of this problem is debatable. Wells and Mullens (1973) examined two carbonaceous gold ores and found no association between the gold and carbonaceous material. A more common problem is indirect interference, whereby the aurocyanide complex formed during cyanidation is sorbed by the native organic matter and is not available for recovery. This phenomenon is referred to as "preg robbing" (Osseo-Asare et al., 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1984). Guay (1981) summarized various methods that can reduce preg robbing during processing of carbonaceous gold ores. However, some are not applicable to carbonaceous ores that have significant amounts of gold locked in iron sulfide minerals. Several methods exist for oxidizing iron sulfide minerals and rendering refractory precious metal ore amenable to conventional recovery processes. These include various embodiments of roasting (Jha and Kramer, 1984; Brown, 1984; Arriagada and Os-seo-Asare, 1984; Smith, 1986), pressure oxidation (Muir et al., 1984; Beattie et al., 1985; Thompson, 1986; Weir et al., 1986; Argall, 1986), and chemical oxidation (Scheiner, 1971; Jackson, 1983; Van Weert et al., 1986). Each process has been successfully used for refractory precious metal ores. In many instances, however, their use is precluded by capital and operating costs relative to the value of the ore. An alternative to these methods is microbial pretreatment - a biological process whereby iron sulfide minerals are degraded and the liberated precious metal values can be recovered by conventional technologies. Bioleaching refractory precious metal ores is a relatively new concept compared to roasting and chemical oxidation. It is rapidly becoming established as a viable pretreatment alternative. Numerous studies have been conducted in the laboratory and on a pilot scale (Yudina et al., 1979; Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Pol 'kin et al., 1985; Marchant, 1985; Livesey-Goldblatt, 1985; Gibbs et al., 1986). Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can be equal to or better than roasting or pressure oxidation in terms of product recovery and process economics (Fridman and Savari, 1983; Livesy-Goldblatt et al., 1983; Karavaiko et al., 1985; Gilbert et al., 1986; Hackl et al., 1986). Bioleaching's main drawback is that pretreatment requires days rather than hours. This can lead to excessive operating costs for difficult-to-treat ores. My reaction when first asked to present this paper was; "What could I possibly say that would hold the audience?s attention for 15 minutes? What could I offer that anyone familiar with the Nevada Barite Industry wouldn't already know?" Well, quite frankly I can't. The industry has certainly been anything but exciting for the past 10 years and, in fact, quite depressing. The challenge, for those few of us left in it, has been to keep it alive. At times it has felt like a doctor must feel with a terminally ill patient. All I can do is recap the past ten years, review the present state of the industry, and offer a few personal opinions and observations as to where I think we are headed.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin trend comprises over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 50 million ounces of gold (Fig. 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are four major deposits; Post, Betze, Bluestar, and Genesis, plus numerous smaller deposits (Fig. 2). Betze is located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines; Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property; and Post on both Barrick and Newmont property.
