There are differences in design aspects between steel and rubber linings in grinding mills. This paper describes the basic design rules for rubber liners for different grinding applications. When converting a mill from steel to rubber liners, the design must be changed from such familiar steel liner shapes as wedge bars and plates, wave liners, and ship-lap, to take advantage of the characteristics of rubber. Very little of the knowledge of the wear properties of steel can be used for the design of rubber mill liners.

The annual rainfall at Minera Yanacocha's gold mining operations in northern Peru averages 1.2 meters. The influx of water into the operations is higher than losses to evaporation and by ore absorption which results in a positive water balance. To minimize water intake and maintain a balance, some special operating procedures are required, and a system involving diversion ditches, storm ponds, heap skirting and detoxification and treatment of excess water is practiced. An operation background is also reviewed at the beginning of the paper.

It is difficult to fail if one has a great deposit, but 'great' ore deposits are few and far between. More often one hears that a mine has been 'made' rather than found. This is particularly true for industrial minerals and for gold and silver projects. Even the best ore deposit can often be improved through innovative technology, e.g. the Escondida copper mine in Chile, where a novel ammonia leaching process is yielding a fabulous DCFROI. Consider the case of a small high grade gold mine. Previous owners had found inadequate reserves to justify the capital cost of developing the mine and installing a mill. Lower grade resources had been ignored because the owners were looking only for grades that would be high enough to support a small underground mine and mill. Randol, assisted by Kappes Cassiday & Associates, determined that the ore was amenable for heap leaching. Secondly, existing drillhole data indicated a significant lower grade resource that appears to be accessible to open pit mining methods. In this case, the appropriate selection of off-the­shelf technologies has literally 'made' the mine. At the Randol at Vancouver '94 conference on Latin American Mining Opportunities, papers on innovative technolo­gies for exploration, mining, metallurgy and environmental management were presented in non-technical terms for managers and resource developers. It was surprising how few of the exploration- and finance-oriented delegates participated in these sessions. Numerous technologies were presented that could be added to one's arsenal of tricks to 'make' a mine, i.e. to convert resources into ore reserves through knowledge.

A hydraulic rock breaker was developed in Germany by Helmut Darda and uses a wedge-plug and feathers mechanism powered by a 10,000 p.s.i. power pack. During the past four years these tools have been increasingly used all over North America for secondary breaking of boulders and rock. More recently, techniques have been developed to break rock off the solid in trenches and rock emplacements where blasting is pro¬hibited or very limited. Underground operations are commencing to adopt the splitter for scaling plus including systems which can be efficiently applied to chambers and mines. Mr. Neil Duncan, who was originally scheduled to give the main part of this presentation has, during this past month accepted a position with the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board in Calgary. The board encourages its members to take part in seminars such as this but, unfortunately, due to the heavy pressure of work, it was impossible for him to attend this conference. Mr. Duncan has, however, forwarded me his notes and suggest¬ions, and using these, combined with a slide presentation, we feel that we can quickly and clearly define the operations and application of the hydraulic splitting technique as it applies to your profession and tunnelling work. The first question that most of you are asking is, "Why use a hydraulic splitter if you can blast?" A combined chemical and biological treatment for the removal of heavy metals and arsenic from a contaminated soil was studied as a potential method for soil remediation. Small scale and column tests were conducted in order to ex-amine the effect of plant-compost and Na2CaEDTA addition on a calcareous soil highly contaminated with heavy metals and arsenic. EDTA is known to be an efficient leaching agent of heavy metals from contaminated soils but has no effect on arsenic. Compost tea on the other hand contains humics that can leach several iron compounds including Fe(III)-oxides and thus can extract arsenic bound to these oxides. The action of Fe(III)-respiring bacteria D.palmitatis was also evaluated for the reduction of iron oxides and compared to simple chemical treatment in the presence of compost in small scale tests. Results indicated that the addition of compost and EDTA into soil pulp lead to the predominance of reductive conditions and the simultaneous dissolution of both heavy metals and arsenic at high percentages. The presence of D.palmitatis did not further enhance the reductive dissolution of Fe(III)-oxides by compost and EDTA as it was observed in the inoculated samples. Column tests using soil as received revealed that, although the extraction of metals seems to be a slow process, compost is an effective oxygen barrier that promotes the reductive dissolution of iron oxides and the subsequent arsenic release together with the dissolution of heavy metals by EDTA.

The mine plan for an underground longwall mine plan usually requires a longwall panel conveyor that begins operation at its maximum length and gradually shortens over the life of the panel. Current mine plans around the United States require initial panel conveyor lengths of up to 4500 m (15,000 ft) and capacities of up to 3.2 kt/h (3500 stph). Because these conveyors are constantly being moved from panel to panel, their components must be as compact and light as possible, and the design must be flexible enough to be modified as new terrain and conditions are met. In the past, when drive horsepowers or belt tensions were exceeded due to conveyor length, a new flight would be added, including additional belt storage units. In some cases, this led to as many as three flights installed in a single longwall panel. As the longwall retreated through each flight, mining was required to stop during removal of the drives and storage units. This sometimes meant several days of lost production. Intermediate drive technology was developed to eliminate this excessive downtime and still keep conveyor belts, motors, pulleys and other components as small as possible. With intermediate drives placed along the carrying side of the conveyor, belt and motor sizes are kept as small as possible, and only one storage unit is needed. Most importantly, as the longwall retreats through a booster drive station, it can generally be removed in a regular downtime slot and no additional production time is lost.

In 1991, environmental issues related to coal mining continued to be an integral part of managing a cost-effective operation. Environmental regulations and their implementation can create considerable cost burdens on operating mines. Environmental responsibilities require management decisions to be made on a whole systems approach that is comprehensive in costs and consequences. Most of the regulatory activity in 1991 that affected coal was related to reauthorization or revision of several pieces of legislation. Issues related to the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act, the Resource Recovery and Conservation Act (RCRA) and Abandoned Mine Land. Clear Water Act considerations will encompass discharge standards, wetlands issues and proposals to regulate ground water quality at the federal level. Discussion regarding RCRA includes efforts to expand regulatory authority into the area of coal mine waste. That is currently regulated by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Another RCRA consideration will be the disposal of coal combustion byproducts. Abandoned Mine Land reauthorization continues the Abandoned Mine Land tax on coal operators. This tax has been in effect since 1977. Regulatory revisions were also proposed by the Department of Interior on valid existing rights, subsidence, federal coal leasing programs and OSM's troubled Applicant Violator System. Industry officials have been critical of the revisions. A federal appeals court found that evidence supported claims by Whitney Benefits, Inc. that the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) deprived the owner of full economic use of its property. Before SMCRA's passage, Whitney established an operating agreement with Peter Kiewit Sons Co. to mine coal.

INTRODUCTION Virtually every sector of society in our country feels the impact of tunnels, either through the transportation of water, commodities, or people. The economic implications are staggering. The Committee on Rapid Excavation (1) reported that during the near future, 1968-1975, underground excavation activity will comprise 946 miles of tunnels (subways: 85 miles; underground urban highways: 123 miles; intercity highway tunnels: 210 miles; water supply tunnels: 528 miles) and 5,119 million tons of crude ore; metals: 874 million tons; nonmetals: 899 million tons; and coal: 3,346 million tons. It is estimated that the cumulative demand for underground excavation in the decade 1970-1979 will be 13 billion dollars for construction-oriented demand and 16 billion dollars for mining-oriented demand. The respective figures for the decade 1980-1989 are estimated at 22 billion dollars and 18 billion dollars. Of the many advantages claimed for tunnels (2, 3, 4, 5) the environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important. Transportation tunnels particularly for rapid transit systems, offer reductions in noise pollution and air pollution while improving aesthetics and optimizing land use (fewer problems of right-of-way and disruption of utilities). Considerable interest has been shown recently in sub-surface construction and mining (6, 7, 8). Recognizing the future demands for tunnels has led to considerable study of methods to improve rates of tunnel advance per day, safety, and the overall economics. Traditionally, production volume has been considered the major determinant of cost. As volume increases, total cost increases but unit cost decreases. This concept has been so widespread in industry that many of the tools used to analyze costs are based on production volume as the sole measure of activity and driver of unit cost-fixed and variable costs, cost-volume-price and breakeven analysis, contribution margin, flexible budgets, and others. Clearly, volume is a driver of cost. It is important in both a tactical sense (to the manager at an operating mine) and a strategic sense (as one determinant to the firm's overall cost position). However, many other factors influence costs as well, even though they have not been studied to the same extent. For example, production managers know that their costs will be reduced if the workforce does not have accidents. Safety costs are to a large extent independent of volume. Other cost components increase as volume increases, such as some environmental charges. Some costs may or may not reflect volume changes. Maintenance, for example, may appear as either a fixed or variable cost, as can operating labor in facilities that are highly automated. In the strategic sense, where the firm is selecting a strategy to pursue competitive advantage and increased profitability, all costs are variable. This reflects both the strategic intent and the long-term time frame associated with strategic positioning. Tactically, on a month-by-month basis, some costs are essentially fixed. Cost driver analysis must therefore consider the relevant time frame.

Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with the quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.

The current trend in gold ore processing is the development of lower grade or highly refractory deposits. The perplexity of treating low grade oxidized ores has been adequately addressed by heap leach technology. However, refractory gold ores are very difficult to positively characterize the gold association within the mineral matrix. Gold accompanied with refractory sulfitlc or carbonaceous mineralization can often be sub­micron In size and occur interstitially. Mineralogical examination of these ores Is difficult, expensive, and occasionally Inconclusive. Hence, the metallurgist Is given little information for the selection of processing alternatives. The purpose of this paper Is to demonstrate the use of diagnostic leach procedures to assist the metallurgist' s decision-making process to solve some of these problems. By sequentially liberating and/or leaching gold associated with specific minerals, the amount of recoverable gold in each stage can be determined. Through careful interpretation of the results obtained by diagnostic leaching, the metallurgist can devise a flowsheet for treating the ore or solve a problem at an existing plant

Blasthole drilling by todays standards is not a mature operation. In most mining appli¬cations, the blasthole drill rig is the least understood piece of machinery. Draglines, mining shovels, and haulage trucks may have more charisma, but the entire mining process starts with the drilling of blastholes to facilitate removal of the overburden and/or the primary material being mined. There are two (2) principal drilling methods them being rotary and percussion. In certain situations, percussion drilling is the most practical method, but for most applications, rotary drilling using the rotary tricone bit is the common and accepted drilling technique. While the drilling rig is on the surface and quite visible to everyone, it is really the object at the end of the drill pipe, the tricone bit, that is doing the work and drilling the hole. The rig supplies power to the bit and air to clean the hole. In addition, it must be capable of providing certain other functions and should be properly outfitted to adequately support the rotary tricone bit.

A joint research effort by Newmont Gold and Du Pont, working with Kurtis Mooney, of Tri-Combined Resources has developed a new ore-sample bag made of "Tyvek," a spunbonded olefin. "The goal was to find a bag with the best trade-off between efficient draining of moisture, minimal fines loss and compatibility with the conveyor drying process we were developing for our new assay lab," Charles Bucknam, analytical development coordinator for Newmont Metallurgical Services states. None of the available polypropylene, cotton or canvas bags had the needed combination of properties. "Our original tests in 1987 on the plastic bags we had been using showed an average loss of 5.4% of mud sticking to the bags when they were emptied into drying pans. Part of the sample was still in the bag as a residual." Tests on bags of "Tyvek" showed low residuals when the samples were dried in the bags before they were emptied, but about 3% of the fines were lost through the seams. Mooney recommended a new bag design, with fold-over seams.

Ion flotation is a process in which ions of interest are complexed with a suitable surfactant molecule. A dilute solution containing these complexes is then aerated, under which circumstance the surface-active complex concentrates at the air-water interface and is transferred to a froth. The present work describes some of the phenomenology of this process and experimental work leading up to the design and use of a pilot scale laboratory facility. Early experiments suggest that selective recovery of gold can be obtained in a manner at least equivalent to conventional CIP processing at low capital cost. Under favourable conditions, upgrade ratios of gold ions of the order of 180: l have been achieved from reclaimed residue dam water with as low an initial gold level as 0.2ppm. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal processing.

During the past twenty years, numerous advances have been made in the technologies used to pretreat sulfidic refractory gold ores. These advances have included improved equipment design, increased gold recoveries, and reduced operating and capital costs. More recently, treatment of refractory gold ores has primarily been accomplished by pressure oxidation (POX), roasting, chlorine oxidation, or biooxidation. In addition to improving the time-proven processes of pressure oxidation and roasting, new and innovative approaches to biooxidation pretreatment of both concentrates and whole ores have been developed. Selecting the appropriate biooxidation technology depends on the nature of the refractoriness in the ore, economic gold recovery, plant design operating parameters (such as desired tonnage), site climatic conditions, and operating and capital costs, as well as several other deciding factors. The objective of this paper is to outline the biooxidation processes and technologies currently available for the recovery of gold from refractory sulfidic ores, to discuss the critical factors that affect plant design and operation, and to provide the metallurgist with a practical guide to choosing the appropriate biooxidation technology for a particular ore or concentrate.

The Paddy's Flat plant of Dominion Mining Limited was commissioned in March 1988 with a design throughput rate of 700,000 tpa. The plant now treats ore at an annualised rate of over 2,000,000 tpa. The only major capital improvement to the plant has been the addition of a pebble crushing circuit. Whilst significant changes in the average hardness of the ore being fed to the plant have obviously occurred, a number of processing innovations have been necessary to enable these throughputs to be maintained. The treatment of ore types with a wide variety of physical properties has been a feature of the operation of the Paddy's Flat plant. The leaching characteristics of the ores are relatively straight forward, and it has been possible to considerably enhance the rate of gold extraction from the ore. Reserves of soft surface ore have been increased which has created the opportunity to improve the profitability of the operation by increasing throughput to considerably above the design level, without having to increase the capital investment in the plant.

Refractory gold ores or concentrates are pretreated in general by physical, chemical and biological oxidative pretreatment processes prior to cyanidation for the economic recovery of gold. The thermal treatment processes generally include fluid bed pro­cessing(!>, chemical with pressure<') or atmospheric (Caro's< ·'>, 3 Nitrox1')) pretreatment leaching and physical with ultrafine grinding!"). Roasting and aqueous pressure oxidation pretreat­ment methods have several commercial applications (Homestake, Barrick) and biological oxidation methods have recently found industrial applications in Africa. The roast pretreatment methods to treat refractory sulphide ores or concentrates transform iron sulphides generally to a porous iron oxide matrix assisting the lixiviant cyanide to effectively diffuse the calcine for cyanidation and hence with improved gold recovery. Jha and Kramer<') made an extensive review of roasting chemistty and practice to tt·eat refract01y gold ores. Industrially two stage pretreatment roasting is generally employed. During the first stage roasting is carried out under oxygen deficiency conditions to provide a low arsenic calcine, mainly magnetite and in the second stage magnetite is trans­formed to haematite under oxidizing conditions.

The Kori Kollo operation is owned by Empresa Minera Inti Raymi S.A., a Bolivian mining company. Inti Raymi is an eighty-five percent owned subsidiary of Battle Mountain Gold Company (BMGC). The remainder of Inti Raymi is held by Zeland Mines S.A., a Bolivian mining company. The project is located near the village of La Joya, approximately 220 km south of La Paz, and 40 km north west of Oruro on the Bolivian altiplano. Inti Raymi started a heap leach operation in 1985. By 1988, following several expansions, 4,000 tonnes per day of oxide ore were being treated. At this time drilling was started to delineate the larger sulfide orebody. A feasibility study for the development of this deposit was completed in 1990, and following project approval, the engineering design was started later that year. During this period orders were placed for the major items of mechanical equipment. In July 1991, Minproc Engineers Inc. was awarded a firm price contract to design and construct the 14,000 tonne per day sulfide ore process facility.

Quarrying is an important activity as it significantly contributes to the economy of a country. This activity presupposes the destruction of the natural vegetation, the removal of the surface soil and deposition of inactive materials. The lack of fertile soil in these disturbed areas is usually a problem for the plant cover establishment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the establishment of ten herbaceous plant species to inactive quarries with the use of limited amount of fertile soil. The research was conducted in the area of the quarries of the cement manufacture company ?TITAN?, Thessaloniki, Greece. On a terrace of one of the quarries, a 2 cm layer of fertile soil was placed. In early October 2007, the herbaceous species, Lolium rigidum, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Agropyrum desertorum, Phalaris aquatica, Dactylis glomerata, Medicago sativa, Medicago lupulina, Sanguisorba minor and Phacelia tanacetifolia, were seeded separately. The first results indicated that among the tested species Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea and Phacelia tanacetifolia had the highest establishment capability.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyure¬thane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft - are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners&apos; safety.
