High brightness clays are produced from Georgia kaolin by flotation. Fatty acids are used commonly as collectors for anatase, which represents the major colored impurity in the crude. This process requires activation of the minerals with divalent cations such as Ca2+, in which case proper control of the activation step is crucial to the success of the flotation process. In the present work, laboratory tests have been conducted using alkyl hydroxamates as the collector for anatase. A major advantage of using hydroxamate is that this new collector requires no activator. The laboratory tests show also that the hydroxamate collectors produce consistently better products with higher yields from a variety of kaolin clays.

This paper describes the innovative procedures employed during the construction of 3 deep shafts within the confines of New York City. The shafts, which varied in diameter from 1.8m (6ft) to 7.3m (24ft) and had an overall depth of 199m (650ft), were excavated by both mechanical and conventional methods. These were subsequently concrete lined, clad steel riser pipes installed and associated surface structures were constructed. Tricky surface rock blasting coupled with the unearthing of unexpected obstructions caused constant uncertainty during the excavation phase. In addition, the necessity of handling men and material in restricted yet deep openings required the development of a safer and more productive shaft construction procedure.

Metal sulfides are degraded via thiosulfate (pyrite) or via polysulfides and sulfur (sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite) by leaching bacteria The attack on the crystal lattice is either effected by only iron(III) ions or by iron(III) ions and protons, respectively. Consequently, different endproducts are formed. For a control of ARD-processes, these reactions need to be hown to regulate them. Experiments in percolators up to 65 m3 with inorganic compounds like fluoride, concrete, or SDS resulted in differently lasting inhibition. Microcalorimetric measurements of microbial leach activity allow monitoring of these effects with respect to active bacterial cells, and, in addition, the amount or rate of dissolved metal sulfide allowing prediction of possible endangerment by ARD.

Large deposits of natural zeolites may provide cost-effective alternatives for treatment of soil and water contaminated ) with heavy metals and radionuclides. Research on the Bikini atoll demonstrated that addition of clinoptilolite to the soil significantly reduces cesium uptake by plants. Re- search on the potential use of zeolites in soils at Bunker Hill, ID indicated only minor benefits at very high contamination levels vs. US Bureau of Mines (USBM) work on the use of zeolites for treatment of mine waste waters emphasized problems with natural waters that previous studies have not addressed. High levels of competing calcium in natural waters significantly decrease the effectiveness of zeolites for heavy metal sorption and may limit the usefulness in these applications.

Column flotation technology has a demonstrated potential for recovering clean coal from high-ash waste fines. The effect of different variables such as air flow rate, frother addition, depressant addition, percent solids and particle size on the quality of separation are discussed. Results indicate that air flow rate and depressant addition are the important variables which control the selectivity in the flotation of fine coal in a column cell. Separation efficiency achieved with column cells is significantly better than that with conventional flotation cells. Under appropriate experimental conditions with a deep column, more than 80 percent coal can be recovered in the concentrate containing 10 percent ash from waste fines containing over 60 percent ash.

Zeta potential determinations and microflotation tests (with starch, sodium oleate and flotigan EDA-B) versus pH, pCa and pMg were performed with apatite and typical silicate minerals that occur in Brazilian phosphate ores: schorlomite, diopside, quartz and micas. Unlike quartz and micas, schorlomite and diopside were depressed by cornstarch during anionic flotation with sodium oleate (pH 1 9). The selectivity of the separation apatite/quartz and apatite/micas by flotation with sodium oleate was adversely affected by the presence of calcium (pCa) and magnesium (pMg) in flotation pulp. Solubility/cation exchange capacity of micas is an important source of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the system.

A new super-large 100 m3 (3500 A3) pneumatic mechanical flotation cell is now available to meet future mineral processing challenges. Several innovative design concepts represent a marked departure from conventional flotation cell designs. The radial discharge from the pump action rotor and the overhung vane type stator is contained in a conical bottom cylindrical tank with no dead comers. Peripheral launders collect froth overflowing the entire circumference of the tank and these launders are of a hexagonal design permitting cells to be nested together in a honeycomb fashion. This new flotation cell is powered by a custom designed hydraulic motor package that provides infinite speed control in individual cells and a soft start under load

Performance of belt conveyors, service life of belts and mechanical elements can be radically improved if the automatic adjustment of the belt speed movement is made in such a way, that the unit load over the conveyor length be constant and close to the rated one under random input freight traffic. Such an adjustment is possible when the system of a controllable thyristor electric drive on the basis of induction squirrel cage motor is used. Computer-aided adjustment of the belt conveyor movement is effected via bicontour digital control of the main drive in order to redistribute loads when the loading of conveyor and contour of the control of tension drive are changed. The system envisages control and condition monitoring of the conveyor electromechanical system, as well as metering of electrical power and the amount of conveyor freight. The results of the simulation of speed control of the conveyor belt are given in the report. Mathematical model of the conveyor electromechanical system describes the movement of the belt with cargo and the tension drive. The input cargo traffic is assumed as stationary ergidic random process with the assigned characteristics. The solution of the problem of the synthesis of a closed-loop control system, the structure and parameters of adjustment, the conditions of asymptotic stability of the control back-up system and the condition of minimization of mean square error of shadowing are also given in the report. Microprocessor controller is used to realize the function of the adjustment unit. Under this control system standard mode of conveyor operation, different modes of start-up, operating mode with decreased speed when transporting people, service and emergency braking of a conveyor and some other modes are realized. The digital model of a conveyor as an instrument for decision making in case of emergency is used in those modes. MASTER TEXT Long-standing practice of belt conveyor operation in mines of Russia has proved their inefficient use with 40-70% capacity and 20-25% availability factor. It is associated with unreasonable power intensity and reduction of service life of mechanical components, and as a result, with the growth of total transportation costs. Low efficiency of conveyor application can be explained by the extremely irregular distribution of conveyor freight traffic. Usually, the width of a conveyor belt is identified in accordance with the possible maximum traffic value, engine power capacity for long-term operation under rated loads. However, actually a conveyor often runs without any load and its average load in most cases is lower than the rated one. The problem can be eliminated by way of the adjustment of the operational mode of a conveyor according to an actual input freight traffic via belt speed control providing for the conveyor regular linear load which is nearly equivalent to the rated one. Experimental research into freight traffic under working conditions of the operating underground and open-cast mines proves the fact that the actual freight traffic can be adequately presented through the model of stationary random function of time, for ex- ample, as a J (t) continuous random Gaussian process that is modulated with a G(t) elementary pulse flow:

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The use of membranes for the treatment of Acid-Mine-Drainage (AMD) water has been a 35 year mining industry quest that has only recently produced commercial scale Zero-Liquid-Discharge (ZLD) plants. The process of development of the membrane treatment of AMD has been defined by the water treatment industry’s efforts to control gypsum scaling of the membranes, an artifact of the concentration of calcium and sulfate ions on the concentrate or “brine” side of the membranes. Improved anti-scalants, changes to membrane surface geometry and a lowered permeate flux rate were all part of solving the calcium sulfate (gypsum) scale formation problem. Whether used singly or as part of a multi-stage membrane treatment process, the production of “left over” membrane concentrate or brine, in any volume large or small, was a second barrier to adoption of the method by the mining industry. The two identified “final brine” treatments were a) solar evaporation ponds and b) mechanical evaporators. Brine disposal by solar means is typically site limited to flat terrains or high net evaporation locations. Mechanical evaporation-crystallization is applicable at all sites but, typically, at onerously high ownership and operating costs. Miwatek, a South African water treatment start-up, has entered the mining AMD ZLD marketplace with two new, pilot-scale tested, processes, both of which are predicated on the innovative treatment of a reasonably concentrated AMD and neither of which produces a final brine that requires disposal. In the Miwatek Brine Treatment, MBT, method the membrane brine is caustic pH adjusted and de-calcified precedent to passage through a second membrane plant. The caustic is generated on-site by a lime treatment of the second-membrane concentrate. The first- and second-stage permeates are blended for discharge. The process usually yields no “final brine” for disposal. In the Miwatek Ettringite Treatment, MET, method a low pH first-stage membrane brine is lime treated in two or three steps in the presence of aluminum in a way that metal hydroxide and calcium sulfate solids are formed and purged from the system. Sufficient aluminum is often present in the feed water to, with judicious recycling, enable operation of the lime-aluminum treatment without the purchase of outside aluminum reagent. The first-stage membrane permeate is blended with the lime-aluminum treated membrane concentrate for discharge. The indications are that the method can comfortably meet the low 250 -500 ppm SO4 discharge water quality standards that have most recently been proposed in South America. The process yields no “final brine” that requires disposal. Projected own-operate costs for the MBT and MET systems are less than the estimated costs for all identified alternative treatments."

Introduction It is the morning after and there is one monumental hangover among many, if not most, of the oil companies that invested in mining in the past decade. How an oil company looks at mining depends on the time period. A few years back, around the time of investment, they were probably looking at a balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild. Many of their commodity prices already increased two-, three-, or fourfold, with no end in sight. There was a need to invest their earnings someplace before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace needed to be an industry where their own management skills could be applied. In mining there was an industry amazingly similar to their own. Both worked with nonrenewable natural resources, dealt with the same types of government agencies, and had the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. Oil executives saw mining as an industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own. They also saw how a generous ration of the capital and management skills, so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry, could be used to great advantage. But, looking at mining through the eyes of an oil company today, this is what might be seen: • An industry that has been spectacularly unprofitable for the past few years; • An industry of many commodities, any of which can go bad on short notice for protracted periods, for a variety of unpredictable and uncontrollable reasons, or for no reason at all; • A labor-intensive industry, often beset by labor problems. And with only limited potential for further economic mechanization or automation in today's primitive mining environment; • An industry confronted with external, foreign, and political problems, with no reasonable expectation of near-term relief; and • An industry that does not appear to have many "up" periods in its immediate future. And, there is little chance for either big, fast bucks or long periods of large, steady earnings. What Went Wrong? The visions of a few years back seemed as correct then as today's viewpoints seem to be now. What happened to change these views? What went wrong? The simplest and easiest answer is that if the economy was normal back then, nothing would have gone wrong. This is an easy answer but, unfortunately, probably incorrect. Let us take a broad overview. Certain events enabled and prompted oil companies to invest heavily in mining. These same events were major factors in precipitating the worldwide recession that has grievously injured mining and has brought those mining investments into disrepute. A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining's continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

In today's economic environment, Canadian mines can ill afford to neglect their ventilation systems as they can consume 30- 40% of the electricity used in underground mines. In addition, Canadian mines can incur significant heating costs. For mines to be their most cost efficient they must embrace existing and emerging technology to optimize the use of their air; namely, maximizing its work in diluting and removing pollutants, limiting leakage, and avoiding the unnecessary consumption of costly fan pressure all the while ensuring the health of their workforce. Furthermore, in Canadian mines which are heavily dieselized there is great interest within the industry to convert from a rigid quantitative approach to ventilation, based upon engine size, towards a more flexible qualitative approach that provides credit for Clean engine technology" and permits ventilation supply to be driven and based upon pollutant demands. In the future, there is even the possibility that ventilation will only be required to supply oxygen to diesel equipment as the underground hands-on workforce is replaced by surface workers and tele-operation. Such changes will allow mine operators to minimize their electrical usage and operating costs, for in its simplest form the cost of running a fan is proportional to the quantity3; therefore, reducing current ventilation demands or limiting increases brought on by more stringent legislation, can produce very significant cost savings. CANMET, through ventilation surveys and use of its modern 3D-CANVENT ventilation simulator, have been demonstrating to the mining industry how ventilation can be optimally delivered at reduced costs. El-Equip with their leaky-feeder communications and MultiVENT monitoring and control system have facilitated mines to control fans and hence costs, and also monitor such ventilation parameters as pollutant concentrations. These two parties are now combining their efforts to develop an integrated air management system which will be demonstrated at CANMET's Experimental Mine Val D'Or, Quebec. With such an air management system, the ventilation engineer will have: 1) a simple to use simulator to design and test ventilation scenarios; 2) remote controls of fans, doors and regulators to implement changes; and 3) real-time monitoring of airflow, pollutant concentrations, and both vehicle identity and location to show whether changes are necessary. It is only when all three are available, that a mine's ventilation system can be operated at minimum cost.

Gold is commonly associated with copper minerals, particu­larly in the more geologically recent rocks of Northern Australia, Chile and the Pacific Rim. Traditionally, oxidised copper-gold ores are selectively mined and processed for gold by cyanidation, ensuring that levels of reactive copper in the ore are kept low to minimise cyanide consumption; whilst sulphide copper-gold ores are floated and gold is ultimately recovered as the by-product from copper smelting and refining (La Brooy, 1992). Very few process­ing options exist for treating copper ores which cannot be selec­tively mined or floated, and for treating floation tailings which often contain significant gold (Muir et.al.,1989). The ammonia-cyanide leach system stands out as a unique method of selectively extracting gold without copper using economic levels of cyanide (1-2 kg/t NaCN) and ammonia (1-5 kg/t). Although first patented in 1904, it proved difficult to control and predict per formance with different ores. However, recent research and development in Western Australia by Ruane (1991), Hayes and Corrans (1992), La Brooy et.al.(1991), Muir et.al.(1993), Muir and La Brooy (1993), has led to an under­standing of the mechanism, and the commercialisation of the process at the Paris Dump (W.A.), Akjoujt (Mauritania), and in the Eastern Transvaal (Laxen,1994). Efforts are now underway to pilot and develop a tailings treatment plant at Telfer following successful laboratory trials. To date, process optimisation has relied on trial and error and large numbers of tests covering a range of conditions. Thus the results are specific to the ore. At Murdoch University, process optimisation is now focused on measuring and control­ ling Eh, pH, NH3 [Cu(II)], and Cu-CN species at the optimum levels identified from the recent mechanistic studies. In this way, the optimum composition required to process any ore should be readily established and maintained.

Introduction Trapper mine is a dip-line strip coal mine, located about 10 km (6 miles) southwest of Craig, CO. The mine provides the Craig Generating Station, operated by Colorado-Ute, with about 2 Mt (2.3 million st) of coal annually. The Trapper mine is situated on a hillside that climbs in elevation from 2 to 2.5 km (6500 to 7400 ft) at average grade of 15%. The coal seams dip at about 16% down-grade and they outcrop near the top of the hillside. They exceed maximum stripping depth in 1 to 1.7 km (3500 to 5500 ft) of pit length. Stripping in the three existing pits is performed with three Page 752 23 m3 (30 cu yd) walking draglines. Two of the pits are currently being cast blasted. Until the active cut, the Derringer pit was cast blasted only where the lower mined seam exceeded stripping capabilities and the pit was a single seam operation. Now, a 9-m (30-ft) interburden bench has been incorporated into the stripping plan. This bench protects the first seam of coal from shear when the overburden is cast blasted. The cast blasted section of the 1.6 km (53,000 ft) long pit has been increased from the 457 m (1500 ft) casted previ¬ously to 1 km (3500 ft). High speed films show the coal losses due to shear of the blast are minimal. The pit width in Derringer pit is 61 m (200 ft). This is necessary for efficient spoil side stripping of a relatively thin interburden in the two-seam section of the pit. The Enfield pit is entirely cast blasted. The single seam pit is 46 m (150 ft) wide, 1.1 km (3600 ft) long, and varies from 15 and 46 m (50 and 150 ft) in overburden depth. "On underground construction projects, effective Quality Management is essential for ensuring facility durability, life cycle performance and low maintainability. Furthermore, follow on contracts also rely on an effective quality management system for interface congruency. An effective Quality Management System (QMS) is also essential in mitigating risks and meeting schedule and budget performance objectives. For the past 15 years Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority’s Link Light Rail extension has successfully completed over 10 miles of twin bore tunneling and associated underground features including cross passages, deep sump structures and shafts. After the completion of each segment, lessons learned have successfully been implemented to improve the quality of delivered projects. This paper presents the Sound Transit QMS with regard to a number of project elements of tunnel construction projects, with specific focus on quality performance of slurry wall construction, TBM tunnel excavation assessment, segment production and segmental lining installation, and other associated construction features. A collaborated total QMS will be presented in this paper that will serve as a guide for successful implementation of Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes. INTRODUCTION Implementation of a robust Quality Management System reduces defects, errors and omissions, identifies and addresses nonconformance in a timely manner and increases stakeholder confidence in the project. In fact and effective QMS helps ensure that optimal project outcomes are realized both in terms of project delivery and life cycle performance. The two key components of QMS are quality control and quality assurance. Quality Control (QC) is the procedure implemented to achieve a certain level of quality and ensure that products, processes and services meet specific requirements. Quality Assurance (QA) activities are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the quality control measures and ensure that the QC process is working. A team obligation that recognizes that quality is built into every aspect of a project is the basic concept of a successful QMS."

Over the past several years, computerized financial models have been an important part of Newmont's strategic planning process. Two applications will be discussed in this paper: a general purpose financial model of Newmont, and a detailed operational/financial model of Magma Copper Company. Newmont?s general purpose financial model was developed using Lotus 1-2-3. It was designed to aid management in assessing the financial consequences of investment and financing decisions associated with long-term strategic planning by simulating the consolidated effect from individual transactions. Not only is the model capable of assessing the sensitivity of specific decisions to changes in the external economic environment (i. e., commodity prices, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates), it can also evaluate the effect from operating and financial decisions, including changing production levels and cost structures at individual operating units as well as simulating several types of transactions, including equity and debt issues, acquisitions and divestitures. The analysis of Magma Copper Company required the development of a detailed operating and financial model of the Company. The model was developed using IFPS in the corporation?s UNISYS (then Burroughs) B7900 mainframe computer and included separate pro forma financial statements for each of San Manuel-Pinto Valley's mines and concentrators, as well as Magma's smelting and refining operations. The outcome of this analysis was the decision to merge Magma Copper and Pinto Valley Copper Corporation, and to recapitalize the new corporation in order to provide funds for a retrofit and expansion of its Arizona smelter and expansions of its refinery and SXEW facilities.
