Since the introduction of Peroxide Assisted Leach, PAL™, in the gold mining industry three years ago, seven plants in Australia and South Africa have successfully employed this process. Significant increases in the gold extraction rate are often accompanied by savings in cyanide. These applications are summarized in an overview which helps to define the requirements for a technically and economically successful PAL operation, based on mineralogical composition, operating parameters, and various design and plant features. PAL has a well-defined field of application which has to be differentiated from competitive oxygen leach techniques.

The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.

In many parts of the world, pyrite and arsenopyrite occur together in sulphide ores either as the only sulphide minerals or in conjunction with other valuable sulphides. It is desirable to produce separate concentrates of the various sulphide minerals, including pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that the contained desirable metals can be recovered economically. It is common, for instance, for gold in an ore containing both pyrite and arsenopyrite to be associated almost exclusively with the arsenopyrite. It is desirable in this instance to produce an arsenopyrite concentrate for gold recovery while rejecting the barren pyrite.

In order to reduce the heat loading in the Tilden Mine kilns caused by burning coal, which in turn resulted in rapid and significant build-upon the kiln lining, internal carbon was added to the green ball prior to balling. Intensive laboratory testing led to three short-term full-scale plant tests that were successfully conducted. Appropriate environmental permits were obtained to allow Tilden to use internal carbon on a continuous basis. Findings concerning carbon addition rates, reductions in coal use, build-up reductions, fired pellet quality, and environmental issues will be discussed.

On account of geological characteristics, Brazil is a country of large deposits of high quality kaolin, with the larger ones being located in its northern region. In the last years, kaolin beneficiation and production area is receiving great investments, aiming at a high quality kaolin production to be used in the paper industry, mainly intended for the foreign market. After the conclusion of expan- sion programs and with the advent of new production areas, Brazil is very soon expected to come in second place in the kaolin world production ranking.

The properties of activated carbon which are important for gold recovery applications include activity, capacity, wear resistance, particle size distribution and bulk density. There are experimental difficulties in attempting to simulate the plant environment in the laboratory in order to measure the above properties. However, standard tests can be set up to compare the characteristics of different carbons and to assist in monitoring the performance of carbon in CIP operations. These laboratory tests are critically evaluated and data are presented on the performance of carbon from a number of CIP plants.

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project's economic potential, if you can't finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today's price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today's dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today's project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes. I welcome this opportunity to give a Congressman's birdseye view of a subject which I believe holds great potential for the future in helping meet the needs of people, with minimal adverse impact on the environment. All mankind, not just the people in this great nation, faces the need for additional usable space. In some parts of the United States the problem arises from rapid urbanization of the surface and little utilization of the subsurface. Everywhere there is an increasing problem of insufficient space arising out of the increasing population crush and growing demands for open space, housing, water, transportation, communication, and social service. You are the technicians to whom we look for assistance in finding answers. We look to you also to provide guidance for broad policy decisions concerning underground space. I prepared for a career practicing law, but since 1952 I have been a member of the House of Representatives. In this latter capacity I deal with programs designed to help solve all kinds of problems. But, naturally, I am especially interested in the water scarcity and other environmental problems of my home state of Arizona and the arid and semi-arid areas in the West. This North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference has as its theme: "Tomorrow's Tunneling Technology Today." I have a very great interest in this potential of our underground space resource. The Central Arizona Project now getting underway in my state will consist in part of tunnels and underground pipelines to convey life-sustaining water from the Colorado River to people and lands across Arizona to the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

The boron review arrived too late for the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1993. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 958 kt (1.05 million st), yielding 526 kt (580,000 st) of B203, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Estimated value was $322 million. This level of production was about 5% less than 1992 revised production figures. The United States continued to provide essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1993 was 900 people, about the same as in 1992. That was down from 1988 levels of 1250 people. Total world production of boron in 1993 was about 2.5 Mt (2.75 million st), yielding about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of B203. World production in 1993 was about equal to revised 1992 levels. Production United States In 1993, mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals. Domestic producers, in order of quantity of production, were: • US Borax and Chemical Corp., which operates an open pit kernite and tincal mine at Boron, CA, producing boric acid and borax products, • North American Chemical Co., which produces boric acid and borax products as coproducts from chemical operations at Searles Lake, CA and • American Borate Co., which produced small amounts of colemanite and shipped from inventories from its operation in Death Valley, CA.

Since 1991, the Porgera Joint Venture has processed refractory sulphide flotation concentrate by pressure oxidation with subse­quent gold recovery from the washed residue, by a conventional leach/carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit. The capacity of the plant has been progressively increased in five stages of development. In December 1995, a third oxygen plant was commissioned, raising the total oxygen production to 750 t/d and thus allowing for an increase in the oxidation capacity of the four autoclaves. The daily sulphur oxidation rate in 1995 was 192 t/d with 99.5% oxidation, as compared to 293 t/d in 1996 with 99.0% oxidation. This paper details the performance of the pressure oxidation circuit through 1995 and 1996, and compares measured plant parameters with the original Sherritt (now Dynatec) process design criteria.

The Australian gold industry currently contributes some $4bpa to the national economy [l]. Some 40% of the total gold is produced in the region centred on Kalgoorlie known as the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. This region is the largest single centre of production with an output of some 100 tpa of gold [2]. In the Eastern Goldfields, refractory arseno­pyritic gold ore is an increasingly significant source of gold, feeding several operations utilizing bio-oxidation as the pre­carbon in pulp/leach (CIP/L) treatment process [1]. This paper desribes an alternative pre-CIP/L treatment option for use in the Eastern Goldfields based on the chlorination of arsenopyrite by chlor-alkali technology [3] using the salt resources available from saline water present in abundance in the region.

In this paper, an effort was made to get more in-sight about the parameters that can affect air sparging technique optimization. Numerical simulations were used in predicting the effects of different parameters utilizing Shell?s in house MoRes simulator. The case of using air sparging to remediate source zone is considered in this work. Different air injection scenarios using continuous and pulsed air injection techniques, with different frequencies and durations, were compared. The amount of MTBE mass removed from the saturated zone and arrived to the ground surface, through the vadose zone, was the main criterion while comparing different air injection scenarios. The simulations results showed that pulsed air injection is better than continuous air injection in removing the MTBE and that the longer the OFF time is the better the MTBE removal.

Burrier pillars in underground coal mines could eventually be subjected to a water head due to the build-up of mine water in the old workings. The water head could not only act ns a force to destabilize the pillar, but it could also cause seepage flow through the pillar and its surrounding strata. Excessive seepage flow could induce piping failure that, ill turn, could accelerate the mechanical failure process of the barrier pillars. In this paper, a finite element simulation approach was employed in the evaluation of the barrier pillars. Both the stress distribution and the seepage flow pattern in and around a barrier pillar have been simulated numerically. The effects of ground stress on rock permeability to water seepage has been taken into consideration in these simulations,

FirstMiss Gold Inc., formerly FRM Minerals, Inc., is heap leaching gold from difficult, low grade ores at the Getchell Gold Mine in Humboldt County, Nevada. A two-thousand ton per day facility is leaching material from waste dumps from old operations and from small, satellite deposits around the main orebody. A three-thousand ton per day pressure oxidation mill is under construction to treat sulphide gold ores in the main deposit. The Getchell gold deposit occurs in a wide fault zone in carbonaceous, calcareous sediments and intrusive rocks. Intense clay alteration is typical within the mineralized zones. Silicification is a less dominant alteration phase within the ore. Gold in the upper oxide portion of the deposit occurs both in a free state which is leachable and complexed in fine disseminated pyrite which is not leachable. Gold in the lower sulphide portion of the deposit is almost entirely complexed in pyrite. Abundant arsenic sulphides and variable amounts of remobilized carbon are associated with the gold mineralization throughout the deposit. The waste dump material being heap leached was derived from the upper portions of the gold deposit. The dumps contain high quantitites of fines, clays and sulphides of iron, arsenic and other trace elements. No stockpiling of low grade materials was attempted during the old mining operations, therefore, the dump material is highly variable and unpredictable. Permanent magnets are used in most electromechanical and electronic devices to convert electrical to mechanical energy and vice versa. More than fifty are commonly found in the average American home and car. A new species of permanent magnet composed of iron, neodymium, and boron has recently been developed which combines superior magnetic properties with compact size. The reduced size of the magnets has enabled significant new developments in such areas as robotics and consumer electronic, among others. The objective of the present work is to efficiently and economically separate valuable rare earth materials from the relatively worthless iron constituent in NdFeB magnet scrap. Several magnet producers have expressed interest in the development of such a process and have provided information and scrap samples to aid in research. Scrap is generated in a variety of forms from different stages in the processing stream. Pieces of magnetic and non-magnetic metal as well as sludge and ribbon from jet casting must all be treated. Beneficiation techniques have been studied and size distributions developed for the different scrap types. Slag from the casting process is resistant to crushing and may need to be embrittled first, but all other types are amenable to crushing and ball mill grinding using stainless steel balls and water. The great increase in post-World War I1 use of molybdenum was made possible by discoveries of that metal in porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits. This section documents significant porphyry molybdenum discoveries of the post-war period. The most important discovery was Henderson in Colorado. It is not only one of the world's largest and richest, but it was found by a team of geologists who defined the hood model and tested it successfully at Henderson. Under the leadership of Stewart Wallace, these scientists established a set of criteria for exploration for Henderson-type de- posits that was copied by the industry. The discovery bf vertical cylinder type porphyry molybdenum deposits was less renowned. Boss Mountain in British Columbia and then Mt. Pleasant in New Brunswick were given relatively scant notice, compared with the Henderson discovery. However, these deposits have geometrics distinct from that found in the typical hood, which directly affects their exploration characteristics. Mt. Pleasant, included in this section, is a well defined, near vertical breccia pipe. Both the Henderson and Mt. Pleasant discoveries were made by relatively small groups operating independently of the bureaucracy that characterizes large corporations. The management role in each case was one of encouragement. In addition, Wallace had the beneficial experience of working for Climax, whose objective was the discovery of porphyry molybdenum deposits. Henderson was the natural outgrowth of the exploration effort by those who studied and understood the Climax deposit.

INTRODUCTION Stillwater Tunnel construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 1973. The tunnel will be the site of an extensive program in rapid excavation research. This paper presents a progress report regarding our plans and relates the tentative decisions which have been made on how to carry out the research effort. The details are subject to revision as more input is obtained from other Government agencies interested in tunnel construction and from experts in industry and educational institutions. The objective of the research program is to bring about faster, less costly tunnel construction. This objective will be pursued through the development, improvement, and evaluation of various construction systems and investigative techniques. The need for this kind of program was recognized by the National Research Council, in its authoritative report "Rapid Excavation - Significance, Needs, Opportunities." (1) The Council advocated a federally funded $200 million, 10-year program to help meet the $69 billion market it expects in underground excavation between 1970 and 1990. The significance of tunnel construction to Reclamation is made clear by statistics of its tunneling experience and outlook. Reclamation has constructed 174 water conveyance tunnels totaling over 190 miles, Six tunnels are presently under construction which have a combined length of about 27 miles. There are on the books nine authorized, but unfunded tunnel projects totaling another 70 miles in length. Many more miles of tunnels are included in programs in various stages of investigation.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) forms when sulfide minerals are exposed to oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining, highway construction, and other large-scale excavations. Iron sulfides common in coal regions are predominately pyrite and marcasite (FeS2), but other metals may be complexed with sulfides forming chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), covellite (CuS), galena (PbS), and sphalerite (ZnS). Pyrite commonly occurs with these other metal sulfides thereby causing AMD where Cu, Pb, and Zn are mined. Upon exposure to water and oxygen, sulfide minerals oxidize to form acidic, sulfate-rich drainage. Metal concentrations in AMD depend on the type and quantity of sulfide minerals present. The drainage quality emanating from underground mines or backfills of surface mines is dependent on the acid-producing (sulfide) and alkaline (carbonate) minerals contained in the disturbed rock. In general, sulfide-rich and carbonate-poor materials produce acidic drainage. In contrast, alkaline-rich materials, even with significant sulfide concentrations, often produce alkaline conditions in water. Approximately 20,000 km of streams and rivers in the United States are degraded by AMD. About 90% of the AMD reaching streams originates in abandoned surface and deep mines. Since no company or individual claims responsibility for reclaiming abandoned mine lands (AML), no treatment of the AMD occurs and continual contamination of surface and groundwater resources results. The oxidation of iron disulfides and the generation of acidity occur through several reactions (Stumm and Morgan, 1970). The chemical equations can be found in Caruccio and Geidel (2000). If any of the processes represented by the equations were slowed or altogether stopped, the generation of AMD would also slow or cease. The equations show that 1000 Mg of rock containing 1% sulfur, all as pyrite, would yield upon complete reaction 31.25 Mg of acidity. Therefore, 31.25 Mg of 100% CaCO3 would be required to neutralize the acidity. The alkaline content of overburden determines whether there is enough neutralization potential (NP) to counteract the acid produced from pyrite oxidation. Of the many types of alkaline compounds present in rocks, only carbonates and clays occur in sufficient quantity to effectively neutalize AMD. A balance between the acid-producing potential and neutralizing capacity of an overburden sample will indicate the ultimate acidity or alkalinity that might be expected in the material upon complete weathering. Accurate prediction and control of AMD before surface mining require an understanding of three important factors: 1) overburden geochemistry, 2) method and precision of overburden handling and placement in the backfill during reclamation, and 3) the postmining hydrology of the site.

In the past mining engineers have tended to rely heavily on the advice of fan manufacturers in relation to fan equipment issues. A more adequate approach was advocated in a paper [ Wallis, 1965 ] submitted to the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress held at Surfers Paradise, Australia during 1965. At that time Mount Isa Mine were in the process of installing 3 large 6096mm (20ft) diameter vertical axial flow surface fans of an advanced type [ Mathews et al, 1967 ]. The preliminary feasibility studies prior to preparing the detailed job specification for this project were extremely thorough with the result that it was possible to include detailed information and instructions in the document, ensuring the procurement of equipment that was satisfactory in all respects. Full advantage was taken of expert services provided by external organizations during the large coordinated multi-disciplinary exercise. My continuing activity and development in relation to the technology of axial flow fans is now at a stage where all known design and performance data are accessible through CAD programs [ Wallis and Kipp, 1987 ]. The extensive calculations that were necessary in 1983 can now be carried out in a mere fraction of the time, and with complete confidence. Model testing in order to validate the fan and duct design proposals is, in my view, no longer essential. The first of the computer programs enables a mine ventilation engineer to study a large number of alternative axial fan arrangements for comparison with the centrifugal alternative. By entering the volume flow rate, fan pressure and air density, he can then with ease, and rapidly, investigate the effect of various blading arrangements, downstream evasee area ratios, and hub ratios, on fan diameter and speed, with their related attainable fan efficiencies. This procedure had its origin back in the 60s when I was advising mining companies on new fan equipment. At that time such an investigation was quite lengthy and lacked the precision and completeness that is now available within the present programs. To obtain the major benefit from these outputs, it is most important not to be disconcerted by the three very important nondimensional parameters, namely, the tip flow coefficient (LAMt), the fan pressure coefficient (Kt or Kit), and the swirl coefficient (Es and/or Ep) as these are important when assessing the various design proposals. When seeking an understanding of the role and importance of each of these variables, ample help is provided in the user manual; the design recommendations are summarized in the help screens which are readily accessible within the design programs.

In an effort to minimize cutter roof failures in longwall development entries of a West Virginia coal mine, a three-entry system was developed with the center entry arched into the strata above the coal seam. The purpose of the arched entry was to modify the horizontal stress envelope associated with the three-entry system and improve roof conditions in the adjacent outside entries. Contrary to the predictions of elastic analyses, the presence of the arched entry improved roof conditions by eliminating cutter roof failures in the outside entries. In-situ stress determinations and numerical modeling techniques were employed to quantify the impact of the arch and investigate the mechanism of stress relief associated with the arched entry. Stress determinations and underground observations indicated that the roofs of the outside entries were within the zone of stress relief generated by the arch, and that failure or movement along bedding plane discontinuities played a major role in the formation of the stress relieved zone. The numerical model incorporated horizontal joints to simulate bedding plane discontinuities. The properties of the joints were adjusted until roof stresses predicted by the model were in agreement with measured stress profiles. This process resulted in a calibrated analytical tool that could be used to evaluate alternate mining geometries.
