In recent years, diminishing supplies of high grade ores and increasing consumption of mineral and metal products have demanded high efficiencies in extraction processes. The rising cost of energy has influenced plant operating policies. Rather than merely processing as much ore as possible, other process factors are being considered in process analysis, with energy consumed per ton of product produced taking on increased importance. Alternate processes and more efficient plant design may satisfy part of the demand placed on the mineral processing industries. However it is expected that the improvement of existing operatives will be responsible for most of the gains in efficiency in the short term. Even slight improvements in process efficiency lead to significant cost saving. Grinding, for example, is an inherently energy-intensive process. Grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high and it is essential that circuits run as efficiently as possible. In flotation plants, low-grade ores demand optimum recovery of valuables to maintain overall metallurgical efficiency. The use of modern data, treatment methods and systems analysis provide the means to achieve many goals, previously beyond reach. The design of more efficient plants and the evaluation and. improvement of existing plant operations constitute the general area of process analysis. Process analysis can be used to identify the capacity available in a process unit in some cases. In other cases, the goal may be to investigate alternative equipment configurations for an existing plant for possible improvement in efficiency. This goal is virtually impossible to achieve using plant data alone. A simulator of the process units involved can provide an excellent basis for performing the required process analysis.

Lamproite occurs in two locations in southeastern Kansas that are in close proximity to each other. In both locations, the lamproite is restricted to north- east-elongated, ellipsoidal depressions measuring about 3 mi by 1.5 mi. At the surface and in the shallow subsurface, lamproite occurs as sills that were intruded into Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks consisting of shale, limestone, and minor sandstone. Isotopic age determinations by Zartman and others (1967) indicate that the lamproite was intruded during the Late Cretaceous (88-91 my). Drillholes for hydrocarbon exploration down to a depth of about 1,400 ft (top of the Mississippian) and numerous shallow drillholes (mostly 200-300 ft) by the Kansas Geological Survey in the northern portion of Silver City dome helped to understand the structural complexity and extent of the near-surface sills. Numerous radial faults showing small apparent vertical offsets limit the lateral continuation of individual sills. Concentric faults are believed to mark the edge of the depression. Wagner (1954) mapped the geology of Silver City dome in considerable detail and recognized a northward dipping, 120-ft-thick, lamproite sill exposed at the surface along the northeastern edge of the dome. The upper 40-50 ft of the sill weathers olive-brown and has a soft, clayey consistency in which only the phlogopite mica is recognizable. The weathered material has been mined by Micro-Lite LLC since 1982 from the exposed sill in an open-pit that measures about half a mile extending in an east- west direction. The bulk of the material, about 98%, is used as an additive in mineral supplements for cattle feed.

Critical components of any Carbon-In-Pulp or Carbon-In-Leach system are the carbon retention screens. One popular design of carbon retention screen is the "NKM" or "Nor-Kai" unit that was developed in South Africa based on units from there and Australia. OSNA Equipment has been manufacturing "NKM" style screens in North America since 1989. OSNA has sold approximately 200 individual NKM screens to date, equipping more than 20 gold leaching plants in the Americas and the Southwest Pacific.

This paper summarizes several chemical purification methods used for producing high-pure industrial minerals These methods, mainly including alkali melting, acid leaching, oxidation-reduction bleaching, are respectively used to eliminate the impurities such as silicates in graphite and diamond, ferric oxides in quartz sand or other valuable silicate minerals, colouring impurities in kaoline, barite and other minerals which are required to have a high-whiteness. The fundamentals of the chemical purification methods and some practical examples in China are introduced in the paper.

Simultaneous dissolution of mercury along with gold occurs during cyanidation of gold ores. A method has been found for the efficient removal of mercury from the gold cyanide solution by treating with dithiocarbamates which form stable compounds with mercury. The mercury concentration in the leach solution can be brought down to low levels by adopting this treatment. Furthermore, it is also possible to stabilize the mercury in the ore heap itself by addition of this reagent so that mercury does not dissolve in the cyanide solution during heap leaching. Only trace amounts of mercury were detected in the pregnant solution obtained from a heap treated with dithiocarbamates. In this paper, process parameters are discussed in detail.

Mineral carbonation is the reaction of carbon dioxide with mineral silicates to form solid, carbonate compounds. The carbonate ion holds carbon in a low energy state – lower than in carbon dioxide. Thus the reaction of carbon dioxide to produce mineral carbonates captures the carbon in a stable, solid form. The University of Utah is investigating the carbonation of silicate minerals by mechanochemical processing, which has the potential of being much less expensive than other methods. Tests to date have shown that a marked change takes place in the lizardite variety of serpentine after 15 to 20 minutes of intense grinding in the presence of gaseous CO2. Further testing is in progress.

Since the start of this decade, our society has attached great importance to matters concerning environmental protection. Currently, most mining operations use the cyanidation process in working gold deposits. While this process is efficient, the dangerous aspects of cyanide are delaying the development and marketing of cyanidation in underground sites. There is a growing need to consider installing an underground leaching system that will make the processing of low-grade gold ore profitable by reducing certain major operating costs (transportation, crushing and grinding). Underground leaching is performed in two ways. The first way is in-site or underground and the second way is in-situ. CANMET (Harrison et al.), in collaboration with Dennison Mines, developed the underground leaching of uranium. This process is used commercially. Copper, salt and sulphur are recovered by in-situ leaching (Jacobson and Murphy). The recovery of gold and silver is under development (Van Staden and Laxen).

A mine's productivity can be significantly increased by using physical and chemical methods to increase the bulk density of newly mined coal. Increases in coal bulk density allows greater amounts of coal to be placed in ships, barges, railroad cars, trucks, shuttle cars and scoops. Increased bulk density can help increase productivity by increasing throughput of container-based, materials-handling systems. Small, easy-to-achieve changes in mining operations are required to obtain the increased productivity. This article deals with chemical methods used to increase coal bulk density. The results and discussion are based on experiments performed in the laboratory. Research at the University of Kentucky using a chemical method shows that an increase of about 15% in bulk density can be achieved using typically small quantities of commercial reagents. This increase in bulk density can produce a proportional increase in the productivity of a mine.

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. Therefore, it is well suited for removing trash, roof bolts, wood, and pyritic balls that are common in Illinois Basin coal. The -75 mm (-3 in.) coal is conveyed from the rotary breaker to

"Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has applied risk analysis methods to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis as applied to mine impounded water illustrates what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first. INTRODUCTION Impounded water, and high water content wastes, at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (5.4 million yd3 released), the Mt Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (5.8 million yd3 released), and the Smarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (78 million yd3 released) has renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originates not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes, and flooded underground mine workings. Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984 the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. Reclamation operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of one hundred years. Many of these facilities were constructed using engineering design and construction methods which would not be considered good practice according to present day standards. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations, and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved. BOR has also applied risk analysis to evaluate and reclaim inactive and abandoned mining and industrial sites. The application of risk analysis methods in the mining industry is not new, the methodology was transferred to the mining industry more than 15 years ago as discussed in ICOLD Bulleting 121 (ICOLD, 2001), yet failures persist. This paper is meant to convey the lessons learned from BOR’s use of risk analyses in its work on mine sites."

There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan's low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America's industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US' performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

Most of those involved in the mining industry are aware of the negative feelings that the well-informed citizens of this country, also known as the American public, have for the industry. As noted in an issue of Mining World News, “The general public perceives mining as dirty, noisy, destructive and belonging somewhere else.” The same theme was raised at a conference in Scotland in July 1991. It was noted there that mining has an unattractive public image around the world “as dirty, dangerous work that pollutes and degrades the environment.” Why is this? Why does mining have such a bad rap? I’m afraid that some of the blame rests with the mining industry itself - both in the past and in the present. Hopefully, we can do something about this in the future. And hopefully, the information here will help the reader to spread the word to offset the negative messages being issued almost daily by industry foes. I hope this will become more than just the words of another miner talking to miners and their friends. In the past, belching smokestacks and polluted streams and waterways were common sights. Today, the negative results of mining operations can also be seen in the form of waste dumps, leaked acid mine waste water and dust blowing from tailings piles. Some will argue that mining did nothing illegal in the past, and that all the regulations in force at that time were carried out to the letter. That may be so. The fact remains, however, that mining did these things, and the evidence is very clear in many parts of the country. It is visible to the well-informed citizens, in spite of the fact that many mine sites have been cleaned up and new technologies, such as flash smelting, dump leaching, pressure leaching and bioleaching, have greatly overcome many of the pollution problems. What is not so visible is the importance of the mining industry in our daily lives. Not long ago, knowledge about our non-renewable mineral resources ranked low on the list of qualifications for being a well-informed citizen. Events during the past two decades have changed this scenario. Politicians, writers, newscasters, economists and administrators, as well as the ‘public,’ are expressing opinions and forming judgments on oil company profits, desecration of landscapes, waste disposal sites and pollution by the extractive industries.

SCOTT COULTER: Thanks, Eric. Thank you all for coming. Our first speaker today is Claude Bazin. Claude received a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1980 from Laval University in Quebec. He worked for a short time in a mineral processing plant and then returned to Laval to complete graduate studies in the field of process modeling and control. He obtained his master's degree in 1983 and his Ph.D. in 1990. In 1987 he joined Brunswick Mining, New Brunswick, as research metallurgist and subsequently process control engineer. In 1990 he joined Helzfield Mines, New Brunswick, as senior metallurgist. In 1991 he accepted a position of professor at the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, a position he is still holding. He's a member of the CIM, TMS, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Claude's topic today is "On-Line Material Balance for Flotation Plants." INTRODUCTION CLAUDE BAZIN: During the last two decades, the on-stream analyzer (OSA) has gained the stat& of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant (Leroux and Franklin 1994), and its application to oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. The OSA assays are sent to the flotation operators via an operator console or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee 1991) implemented in a distributed control system (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one could ask, "Could we get more from the OSA?" Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements for process optimization (McKee 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2-product formula (Wills 1992, p. 124). The 2-product formula is sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al. 1993). Least squares algorithms provide a robust alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring 1992). This paper presents some applications of a recursive least squares algorithm that provides real-time estimates of the mass flow rates within a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow rate measurements.

The Campbell gold operation of Placer Dome Inc. produces an arsenopyrite-sulfide concentrate that must be treated by roasting, biooxidation or pressure oxidation to obtain high gold recoveries. Pressure oxidation is a proven process that also meets Ontario's stringent environmental regulations. A comparison of biooxidation and pressure oxidation was completed early in 1990. Placer Dome selected pressure oxidation as the preferred process to replace the roaster. The commercial plant design was based on technology supplied by Sherritt Gordon. In July of 1991, the existing roaster operation was shut down and a new pressure oxidation plant was commissioned. The Campbell Red Lake Mine, in Balmertown in northwestern Ontario, is the first plant in Canada to use Sherritt Gordon's pressure oxidation technology to recover gold from a refractory ore body. A similar process has been used at Sao Bento in Brazil since 1986. The Porgera complex in Papua New Guinea also uses Sherritt's technology. At the Campbell Mine, gold occurs as either free gold or is encapsulated with sulfide minerals, mainly arsenopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. These sulfide species are recovered from the ore by crushing and grinding to 80% -75. µm (200 mesh), followed by flotation. About 40% of the gold in the ore is recovered by gravity separation. The remainder reports to the ground slurry feed to flotation. The flotation concentrate averages about 55 to 60 t/d (60 to 66 stpd). A typical analysis is shown in Table 1. Before the installation of the pressure oxidation plant, the flotation concentrate was treated in a two-stage, fluid bed roasting circuit. Roaster off-gases passed through two parallel sets of cyclones, followed by electrostatic precipitators. Arsenic trioxide was captured in a four-chamber baghouse before the gas was discharged to a stack. The arsenic trioxide was sold or conveyed to an underground storage vault. The roasted calcine was fed to a gravity separation circuit and then subjected to cyanide leaching. Gold was recovered from the filtered leach solution in a Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation circuit.

Recent investigations conducted by Federal, State, and industry organizations suggest that significant coalbed gas resources may exist in the Cretaceous and Paleocene-Eocene coal beds of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain. Exploration efforts have focused on three areas which are in south Texas, north-central Louisiana, and south-central Mississippi (Figure 1). Coal-bed gas production is currently underway in south Texas and in north-central Louisiana. In Mississippi, several test wells have been drilled but no data are available on their production potential.

INTRODUCTION Rock bolts are one of the most common mine support systems in use today with approximately 90 to 95 million used annually in the nation's coal, metal and non-metal mines. By far the largest majority of these are steel bolts with mechanical expansion shell anchors. Many theories have been advanced to explain the ground control achieved through the use of rock bolts. Most of the theories are applicable to a specific set of circumstances, geology, geometry, rock properties and in-situ stresses. Examples are those which relate the beam building or strata-hanging theories of ground support used in the rectangular openings of a coal mine(l). In tunneling and most metal mining, either circular or horseshoe shaped openings are normally used. Here, bolts may be used to develop a radial stress around the opening, which adds stability to that opening, or merely pin blocks of rock back into more stable ground so that they cannot slip. In most cases, the bolts are torqued to a specified value to seat the anchor and to achieve the pre-load or tension that is desired. To be effective, however, this tension cannot be lost through bolt slippage or creep frequently caused by blasting, moisture attack or raveling of the rock surrounding the drill hole, etc. Furthermore, in soft rock or in oversized holes, sufficient anchorage cannot be achieved with the mechanical anchor, and in very brittle rock the concentration of forces produced by the expanding anchor might cause a crack to propagate from one drill hole to the next. On October 27, 1972, ground was broken for the first section of the Second Avenue Subway, a two track underground rail system that was to extend from the south end of Manhattan at Broad Street, north to the Harlem River at 126th Street, a distance of eight miles. This ground breaking was the culmination of 67 years of planning for an east side subway in Manhattan. Following the successful opening of New York City's first subway on October 1904 there was a mass planning for additional subways throughout the City. In 1905 approval was requested of the Board of Estimate for a First Avenue route and Third Avenue route. The Third Avenue route was approved but when action was not taken to start construction, the approval in accordance with the conditions under which it was given was withdrawn. Further reports and plans for an east side subway, usually to be constructed on Third Avenue, were issued in 1920, in 1922, in 1924, etc. Those of us who had worked on the Sixth and Eighth Avenue subways in the thirites and early forties left to join the armed services of World War II in the expectation that we would return and start work on designing and constructing that east side subway. The reason that much of the thrust in those years was to construct on Third Avenue was that there was a Third Avenue "EL" and business interests of the City were in favor of its demolition. This demolition was accomplished in 1955 so one of the incentives to construct on Third Avenue was removed; but an east side subway was always part of the master plan of the City.
