A mathematical model, based on first-order kinetics, is derived to describe batch settling data. The model is used to predict the settling behavior of solid suspensions under different conditions. The potential benefits of this model to solid-liquid separation processes are discussed.

This paper examines the viability of using the QEM*SEM automated scanning electron microscope for the determination iron sulfide and calcite volumetric percentages. The analytical reliability was verified by comparing elemental abundances calculated for fourteen samples using the QEM*SEM volumetric percentages and appropriate mineral compositions and elemental abundances determined by standard laboratory procedures. The abundances were comparable, thus demonstrating suitability of this technique for evaluation of the acid neutralization and generation potentials of mining wastes.

This paper presents the precise definitions of a number of commonly used subsidence parameters. Using an integrated approach, the parameters were determined for 110 subsidence cases collected from major US coal fields. Attempts were made to establish empirical formulae for the parameters. The results of this study indicate that some traditionally held concepts should be changed.

The paper describes the arrangements for the casting, curing and handling at the casting yard, of the concrete segments for the lining of the UK half of the tunnel, and the plant used for the handling of these linings at the construction site. An outline of the tunnel boring machines being used is given, with particular reference to lining handling and erection, and the extensive muck disposal systems installed. Collophane, cryptocrystalline fluorapatite, is examined as a substrate for plant water and wastewater remediation. The attenuation of Fe3+, Cr3+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ is presented as a function of metal ion concentration, amount of collophane, initial pH and conditioning time. TCLP results for Pb2+ contaminated collophane are presented. Mechanisms of adsorption for divalent and trivalent species are suggested. The specification of the prime mover of an autogenous-semiautogenous mill involves an analysis of the likely operating conditions within the mill and the choice of a nominal operating speed. For variable speed mills, the operating range for mill speed has to be defined so that mils power-torque requirement can be matched by the motor power-torque capability. This paper describes how thin relationship can be influenced by ore grindability.

Three-dimensional finite element modeling (3-D FEM) was performed to analyze the safety factors of stump pillars, 5.5 m x 5.5 m, under a cover of 63 m using the Modified Drucker-Prager Theory. The results showed that they were safe. This was substantiated by underground observations. But the safety factors predicted by three commonly used pillar design formulae showed otherwise. This paper discusses the modeling details and analyzes the difference between 3-D FEM method and traditional pillar design formulae.

Failure to achieve the planned production rate at new mines and mine expansions has a major adverse impact on a project's economics. A study of 60 steeply dipping tabular deposit-type underground mines showed that 35% of the mines did not achieve their production goals. An empirical formula based on the geometry of the deposit and expressed as a rate factor is applicable to select a production rate for this type of deposit. The formula is: Annual production rate = Rate factor x Rate multiplier. The appropriate rate multiplier for each category of deposit thickness and the associated risk can be used to select an appropriate production rate.

The conveyor housing's corroded, exposed metal- deck was cleaned and cocooned to prevent renewed corrosion, at less than the cost of replacing the structure. And the process did not require operations to shut down. That was the result for Akzo Salt at its mine under Lake Erie's Whiskey Island, just off Cleveland, OH'S north coast. The exposed metal deck was on the underside of a covered, outdoor conveyor used to load mined road salt into boats.

Some attempts were made to recover gold from aqueous systems using immobilized persimmon tannin. This adsorbent adsorbed gold from solutions containing hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) with high efficiency, whereas there was minimal adsorption from solutions containing gold (I) sodium thiomalate and sodium dicyanoaurate (I). The adsorption of gold was rapid, and was affected by the pH of the solution, temperature, external gold concentration and amount of adsorbent. Adsorbed gold was easily desorbed with 1 M thiourea solution, indicating that immobilized persimmon tannin can be repeatedly re-used for the recovery of gold using adsorption-desorption cycles.

A method for removing nickel and vanadium contaminants from spent HDS catalysts involves pretreating the catalyst with H2S followed by extracting the metals with an acidic solution of ferric ion. The ferric ion solution alone removes significant amounts of active ingredients, cobalt and molybdenum; however, by pretreating with H2S, the extraction becomes more selective for removal of Ni and V.
