Geological and hydrological conditions in the strata overlying the Salado Formation vary considerably in the Carlsbad, NM, area. The first four shafts sunk at International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (IMC) property have been located in competent and essentially dry conditions, while other shafts on adjacent properties have had such adverse conditions that ground freezing has been chosen as the water and ground control technique for shaft sinking. At the location of the IMC No. 5 shaft there has been extensive erosion and salt dissolution in the Rustler Formation, leading to collapse of some zones of the strata. Both ground freezing and pregrouting were considered as alternative methods of stabilizing the extremely poor ground conditions and controlling the potentially very heavy water inflows. It was decided that pregrouting the shaft was feasible and would offer substantial cost and time saving over a ground freezing technique. This paper describes the pregrouting techniques used and illustrates the requirement for flexibility in a grouting program so that it can be modified to reflect any new or additional information obtained during the progress of the grouting.

"Replacing the aging roadway access to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, thereby ensuring traffic safety and robustness in case of seismic occurrences, provided an opportunity for major design improvements as well as the development of a parkway that would include the construction of four new tunnels. With an eye to the future, the Doyle Drive replacement project aimed to meet the highest standards for environmental stewardship beyond regulatory requirements. Understanding that lighting equipment is the tunnel‘s subsystem that uses the most energy, the operator was looking for a sustainable solution to light the tunnels. An Intelligent Lighting Control System (ILCS), designed specifically for road tunnels, was acquired to individually control the almost 2000 luminaires lighting the four tunnels. This paper will show the results in terms of energy and operational savings generated over the nine months of operation between the commissioning and the conference in April 2016. INTRODUCTION Electrical & mechanical (E&M) equipment represents an average of 10 % of a tunnel total construction cost. Once the civil infrastructure completed, E&M equipment drives the main part of the expense during a tunnel useful life. Table 1 below describes the impact of various types of energy consumption and their cost impact in tunnels of less than 500 m. It is clear that lighting is the sub-system that requires the most energy. A good lighting strategy is the key to reducing energy consumption due to lighting and a viable solution that will bring important savings in tunnel operations.With a price of $0.14/kWh in California and a planned increase between 3% and 6% per year during the period 2013-2040, the tunnel operators could not afford to overlit the tunnels—particularly when they have to operate it for the next 30 years. However, they also need to maintain the right lighting level to ensure driver safety all the time. The Presidio Parkway project includes the Battery tunnels, which are 240 m (790 feet) and 230 m (750 feet) in length, and the Main Post tunnels, which are 280 m (920 feet) and 315 m (1030 feet) in length."

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. Economic open-pit and surface mining often call for ever increasing volumes of lower grade materials. So it is important, often critical, to develop precise expense and production estimates for the large electric mining shovels now in use. An electric shovel's basic application is to "shovel up" material, starting at ground level with the dipper moving up into a working face or bank. It's impractical to dig below ground level with a shovel, except briefly or in unusual circumstances. The shovel working face is "the bank," whether the material is dug from natural bed or blasted. The shovel's digging attachment, the boom and dipper handle, is built in standard and long range configurations. A standard digging attachment is normally used for loading into haulage equipment. The long range attachment is normally used for side or hack casting to a spoil pile. It is also used fir loading into haulage equipment placed above shovel ground level, as in some coal loading applications. Shovel clipper size and hauler capacity should he matched so that a hauler can he loaded in three to four shovel work cycles. Five cycles is usually the limit of good practice. If fewer than three cycles are required, the hauler is too small. More than five cycles indicates possible excess harder waiting time for loading, or shovel waiting time for too few haulers. Full dipper loads, including the last dipper or ''pass, " are essential for economical shovel and hauler match. Consistent need for a final partly full dipper to fill the hauler shows an improper match between the two.

A dust concentration meter has been developed with Australian coal industry support for the measurement of total airborne dust concentrations capable of causing explosions in underground coal mines. The instrument, The University of Queensland Dust Meter (UQDM), measures the effective dielectric constant of a mixture of coal dust and air that is drawn between the plates of a capacitor, the capacitance of which is measured by a ratio-transformer bridge and synchronous detector system. This technique measures small changes in capacitance to approximately 1 part in 106. The unique design of the capacitor sensor permits a precise volume of coal dust and air mixture to be sampled. This arrangement overcomes difficulties inherent in optical dust measurement. The meter is portable, battery powered, incorporates data logging and has intrinsic safety approval. The operation of the meter is discussed. The system is designed to monitor dust concentrations along a coal mining face and provide concentration profiles leading to the development of suppression strategies. If data from underground tests are available, the meter's potential to contribute to establishing safe working conditions underground will be discussed. Other areas of potential application of the measurement technique are also examined.

Several aspects of the capture of hydrophobic dust particles by droplets in sprays have been studied. The particle capture depends on several sub-processes involving collision, adhesion and engulfment. The collision events between dust particles and a single droplet were observed with a high speed motion analysis system to determine the influence of a surfactant on the capture process. In the adhesive process it was observed that the dust particles are collected at the surface of the water droplet to produce a rigid film at high dust loadings. In the presence of the surfactant, however, the particles were engulfed inside the droplet keeping a fresh surface on the droplet available for capture of more particles. A theoretical analysis is presented to take into account the role of contact angle on the penetration of particles into droplets. A significant increase in collection efficiency was observed with decrease in droplet size.

Newmont Gold Company is the largest producer of gold in North America. Accurate resource estimates are critical to planning the mining in a year of over 90,000,000 t (100,000,000 tons) of mill, leach and waste grade material, from which over 47 t (1,500,000 oz) of gold are recovered. Resource estimates are updated frequently to take advantage of new drilling, improved geologic understanding and additional production reconciliations. At Newmont Gold, indicator kriging is the primary method being used to create resource estimates. Indicator kriging (IK) is a well accepted method of resource estimation; however, many details of the IK process which are critical to producing a useful resource estimate have not been well documented. An IK model must have several characteristics in order to be a useful resource estimate: the model must take into account geologic features of the mineralization; model creation cannot require too .much time; the model must accurately reflect the effects of selective mining; the model must be stored in an easily accessible format; and the model must be useable with a variety of cutoff grades. This paper will show how Newmont Gold implements the IK process in order to achieve these goals.

Cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters affecting project cash flow. Its sensitivity is due to the number of other parameters that are correlated with any change in its value. Changes in cut-off grade, average grade and ore tonnage vary and they in turn can affect such parameters as capital and replacement costs, recovery, life of the project and operating costs. Perhaps one of the best definitions of cut-off grade is that of Taylor (1), "... any grade that, for any specific reason, is used to separate two courses of action, e.g. to mine or to leave, to mill or to dump ... . Obviously the most likely specific reason is one governed by economics, involving the return of investment and sufficient profit to motivate development and mining of the deposit. In this paper the cut-off grade is defined as that mining limit which will maximise the economic return for a projected mining venture. The following brief literature survey indicates that when computing the optimum cut-off grade there is a need to be able to directly compute the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) or Net Present Value (NPV), as economically as possible, while allowing for parameter dependencies and variation in project structure.

I. INTRODUCTION The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is a regional water and sewerage authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to the Metropolitan Boston area. The MWRA was created by the Massachusetts Legislature as an independent authority in 1985 following the filing of a lawsuit in federal court to correct the pollution of Boston Harbor resulting from inadequate and inadequately maintained sewerage facilities. Immediately upon its creation, the MWRA began to tackle treatment plant issues, including addressing the need for a secondary treatment plant, planning for ceasing ocean discharging of sludge, and making interim repairs to the existing, antiquated treatment plants. The MWRA's initial activities led to a court-ordered schedule for construction of a single new primary and secondary treatment facility, for development of sludge management plan focussed principally on reuse, and for completion of a short term program of repairs to existing facilities. Once a schedule for completing these activities had been negotiated, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a plaintiff in the federal court case, asked that the MWRA take "responsibility" for controlling discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) within its service area. The cost of transportation of industrial minerals frequently is higher than the cost of the product. When a mine, industrial-mineral plant, or customer is served by a single railroad, because of the lack of competition, that railroad may in- crease rates and/or reduce service so that the economics of that mine, plant, or customer are affected adversely. Transloading of industrial minerals from rail-to-truck or truck-to-rail to improve economics and sales of product is not a new concept. However, transloading to create competition and reduce freight costs or to improve service is a relatively new concept brought on by the recent mergers of many of the main-line railroads, both in the eastern and western United States. For example, in 1998, with completion of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe (BNSF) and the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific mergers (UPSP), the western United States has only two main-line railroads. The industrial-mineral producer, to reduce the cost of transportation or increase the level of service, must evaluate potential transloading opportunities in light of higher prices and reduced service brought on by reduced railroad competition. This paper discusses industrial-mineral transloading and examines the case history of the Tucker Hill perlite project in southern Oregon. The Tucker Hill project is a classic study of industrial-minerals transloading where the project would have failed without the transloading.

The White River Shale Oil Corporation (WRSOC) is developing a prototype oil shale facility on Federal Lease Tracts Ua and Ub located in northeastern Utah. This paper covers the successful driving of 1,525 m (5,000 ft) of dogleg downgrade decline with a 70-ton Paurat Roadheader mining machine and a conveyor muck-handling system. Ground support is with rock bolt and shotcrete; welded wire mesh is optional. The Upper Decline of 3.89 m by 8.69 m (12.75 ft by 28.5 ft) was mined through the Uinta Formation sandstones and shales in 210 days. The sandstones have a compressive strength in the 48 MPa (7,000 psi) range with a few bands of shale up to 137.8 MPa (20,000 psi). Green River Formation dolomitic marlstone with some sandstone lenses was mined in the Lower Decline 3.89 m by 5.64 m (12.75 ft by 18.5 ft) in 175 days. The Green River marlstones are tough massive formations ranging up to 206.8 MPa (30,000 psi). Roadheaders for use on steep slopes must be modified to accommodate the particular problems associated with mining downdip. The paper concentrates on the application of Roadheaders to steep slopes and the problems of mining tough materials such as marlstone. The paper also shows the advantage of using the method of excavation on long drives.

This paper presents detailed information on the genesis, formation, and industrial utilization of Yaylacik magnesites. Tectonically, the study area is located within the Tavsanli Zone, immediately south of the Izmir-Ankara suture in western Turkey. The geologic setting mainly comprises ophiolitic melangks basics, and ultrabasics associated with very rich magnesite deposits and lacustrine sediments. The ophiolitic unit tectonically overlies the schists and carbonate rocks. The presence of glaucophane and lawsonite indicates a low-temperature/high-pressure metamorphism. The ultra- basic rocks, which exhibit cumulate composition, have been mostly serpentinised and represent the oceanic floor of the Yaylacik ophiolite. Basic intrusives consist of dolerite and diabase, and they show the characteristics of within-plate dolerites. The magnesite occurrences are commonly observed in block, stockwork, lens, and vein forms and were deposited within the serpentinites. In most magnesite samples, secondary quartz/chalcedony formations are observed as fracture fillings due to the highly effective tectonic movements. Field surveys and microscope studies reveal that magnesites had been formed by the metasomatic alteration of serpentinites. Chemical analyses show that, although MgO content of the magnesites varies from 43.41% to 50.48%, Fe203 and CaO are lower than 1%. Silica contents are as high as 5.52% in a few samples. Although Yaylacik magnesites are not suitable for making basic refractory bricks, they are widely used as caustic-calcined magnesite in a variety of applications, including animal food, artificial fertilizer, chemical (acid neutralizer), medical and pharmaceutical, and water treatment.

Measurable physical characteristics of placer deposits include geological, geomorphological, sedimentological and mineralogical features which produce the complimentary ingredients with which one can formulate an economic evaluation of these complicated deposits within the confines of a well established geological model. Heavy mineral suite composition and character will change downstream from the provenance area and will compliment the related depositional environment. Careful attention to gold particle characterization during the exploration phase can indicate new source additions, enhance deposit evaluation methods and greatly assist in maximizing metallurgical efficiencies. Failure to recognize and measure these important features very frequently leads to frustrated and unrewarding placer evaluation goals. Increased general acceptance of sedimentology in the gological appraisal of ore bodies has progressed into the science of clastic sedimentalogy using measurable parameters to evaluate minable units. This branch of geology has developed as a tool in locating, defining, and mining alluvial concentrations of valuable heavy minerals. The repeatedly successful application of this valuable tool in conjunction with other classical geological methods can be directly related to the development of a geological model which formulates the distribution of detrital gold. This use of multiple geological techniques permits the transfer of routinely derived data to management. Standardized nomenclature permits the transmission of uniform information thereby promoting credible property evaluation. This approach enables organizations to critically assess large numbers of potential mining targets for definitive feasibility studies. Sedimentology must play an integral role in the evaluation of any alluvial deposit. Searles Valley is located approximately 125 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Basin and Range Province. Occupying the lowest part of the valley is Searles Dry Lake Playa, which is about 9 miles long and 7 miles wide. Three major subsurface evaporite horizons have been identified and are termed from bottom to top, the Mixed Layer, Lower Salt and Upper Salt. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of runoff from the eastern Sierra Nevada during Quaternary time. The saline beds are generally brine saturated with the important ions being sodium, potassium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride and borate. These ions are present in the brines in various concentrations and have combined to form the minerals halite, hanksite, trona, nahcolite, burkeite, borax, thenardite, sulfohalite, glaserite and others. North American Chemical Company selectively pumps the interstitial brines to feed their chemical plants located on the western edge of Searles Lake. Minerals have been mined since 1873, beginning with borax and trona scraped from the surface. Brine processing began in 1914 with potassium chloride and borax recovery. Expansions have added sodium sulfate and soda ash to the product mix. Currently, dredging of trona ore is also taking place.

In flotation processes the structure of the froth phase contains a wealth of information regarding the behaviour of the plant. Various structural features of the froth phase provide an indication of the froth viscosity, froth stability, mineral content, bubble size, etc., which can all in turn be related to the performance of the plant. In this paper the application of machine learning techniques to exploit information from digital images of the froth phase of industrial flotation plants is discussed. This includes both connectionist techniques to identify control decisions necessary to maintain optimal operation of the plant, as well as symbolic methods, such as induction techniques. Both approaches are used to classify froth structures based on statistical features derived from digitized images of the froth surfaces. It was found that backpropagation algorithms perform significantly better than either non-incremental or incremental induction. Backpropagation algorithms requires significant user input in order to optimally train the neural network as opposed to induction, which requires little user input. In contrast to back propagation, decision tree induction produces easily understandable decision trees which can be incorporated into a rule base or an expert system. Finally, incremental induction provides a simple means to smoothly and continuously adapt induced rules to follow changing process conditions.

Cement plants in the central Hudson River valley utilize limestones of the Helder-bergian Series of the Lower Devonian. Chiefly calcilutites, calcarenites, and cherty calcisiltites, these rocks represent progressively deeper environments, from lagoonal to neritic, with scattered reef deposits. Stratigraphic continuity is marked, and a layer-by- layer analysis shows strikingly constant chemical compositions. The structural picture varies from flat-lying and relatively unfaulted beds on the northwest, through gently folded and faulted beds on the north, to complex overturned beds with closely spaced imbricate faults on the south. Operating techniques are simpler in the north, where grade control is effected chiefly by the initial layout of the faces. In the south, grade control requires flexibility and frequent adjustment of faces or scheduling. A system of quarrying along strike has been developed, grade being computed from a cumulative foot-per cent graph of the critical oxides in each mappable layer. Balancing shovel production among the many faces is simplified by comparing production requirement ratios with ratios of the various types of rock in each face. Drilling and blasting limits are geologically controlled if warranted, or large blasts embracing several rock types are shot and the resulting pile of broken rock is staked along shovel limits.

Risk can generally be defined as the possibility or chance of a loss corresponding to uncertainty. Analysis is the process for examining the components and relationships of a complex system in order to determine the impacts of its variables. Risk analysis is therefore a course of action taken to analyze multiple variables of a system that is subject to speculative outcome. When risk analysis is applied to mine development, it becomes the means for assessing and measuring those parameters that contribute to economic viability. Mining can be a risky business. It is composed of an assortment of factors that contribute to its financial outcome. Of these factors, the most consequential output is the net present value (NPV). Applying risk analysis in mine development can identify those factors having the most significant impacts and applying limits to those impacts. Mathematical computer modeling using Monte Carlo techniques is available and can be customized to suit specific mine development ventures. Essentially, those parameters that are not fixed values can have input variability. Rationally deduced engineering estimates should be the basis for determining the initial values applied as inputs in the models. Risk analysis therefore provides the user a means to identify, rationalize and assess the risks in mine development in an informed, calculated, and unbiased format for making economic decisions.

In reference to the section "Excess pyrite," the author discusses difficulties in separating chalcopyrite from pyrite. A technique does exist, and has been used commercially, for the flotation, separation, and recovery, if desired, of both chalcopyrite and pyrite. The method was described in Mining Engineering, March 1966, "An Improved Flotation Method for Cornwall Sulfides." While it was not used on a porphyry copper ore, it was used on a chalcopyrite- pyrite-containing ore and might well have application. Both sulfides, chalcopyrite and pyrite, were floated simultaneously using xanthate as a collector and MIBC frother to produce a cleaned sulfide product. This concentrate was then thickened and conditioned at high solids with aeration and lime to a pH above 12.0 for a period of 1.5 to 2 hr. A supplemental suppressant, such as cyanide, could be used if necessary to sharpen the subsequent separation; however, it was not required at Cornwall. The conditioned sulfides were floated with two stages of cleaning to produce a high- grade chalcopyrite froth product and a pyrite sink product barren in copper. The separation at Cornwall gave a 28.6% Cu grade chalcopyrite product and a pyrite analyzing 0.06% Cu. A desliming step on the raw ore initially used at Cornwall for a period of time was later discontinued. Advantages to be found in using a strong sulfide collector, such as a xanthate, is the rapid flotation it induces and, generally, an ability to float at a coarser grind. A following regrind circuit could be used to give maximum liberation and produce a clean sulfide concentration. The "differential" separation is concerned primarily with grade and with assuring a barren pyrite for maximum recovery.

INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170' litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

In April 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded the first contract for rapid machine excavation of a water conveyance tunnel . Since then the Bureau has excavated seven tunnels with a total length of over 190,000 feet utilizing rapid excavation tunneling machines. Tunnel bored diameters have varied from 9' 0" to 20' 10" (See Table #1) and tunnel lengths from 5,000 feet to 67,000 feet. Driver and cutter units varied from 43 rolling teeth and eight rolling discs mounted on a rotating head driven by five 200 HP 23,000 volt electric motors to 20 discs and one tricone unit mounted on a rotating head driven by two 100 HP 440 volt motors. All tunnels were driven with a laser beam guidance system governing both line and grade. Trailing conveyors and rail haulage systems were used to dispose of the excavated material. Approved Bureau of Mines diesel locomotive engines for waste trains were prevalent power sources supplemented by battery units on some projects. Sandstone, conglomerates, agglomerates, siltstone, shale, and granite were the geological formations encountered, with sandstone and shale the preponderant material . Tunnel support systems utilized were structural steel ribs; rock bolts and metal plates; and shotcrete, or combinations of these. Progress varied from 51-1/2 feet to 154 feet per working day for three shifts, depending on rock material and supports required. One contractor established a record rate of advance of over 400 feet in one day, 1,905 feet in one week, and 6,848 feet in one month. Such diversified experience in underground machine excavation methods presented an excellent opportunity to observe, analyze, and evaluate associated environmental health problems.
