One function of mining is to supply oil shale of the required grade and characteristics to surface retorts. The mining methods must he safe, efficient, and environmentally acceptable. Although the Bureau of Mines no longer conducts research on methods of mining fossil fuels, including oil shale, its many years of activity in that field resulted in a significant body of findings. This article summarizes some of these findings, with respect to oil shale mining. The large areal extent of Green River formation oil shales and the diversity of geologic, hydrologic, topographic, and other conditions, preclude the use of any one single mining and waste management technique. Instead, in most instances, methods and equipment will be chosen to meet site-specific conditions. Such methods include conventional surface mining (open-pit and strip), underground mining (room-and-pillar, sublevel stoping, caving) and in situ extraction (true in situ from surface drill holes and modified in situ from underground retorts containing rubblized oil shale). Combination or hybrid systems may prove suitable. Both surface and underground backfilling of spent shale waste may be practiced. Tremendous amounts of oil shale must be mined, processed, and the waste shale properly disposed of in order to meet projected industry production goals. For example, about 1.4 tons of oil shale averaging 117 L of shale oil per ton are required to produce one bbl of oil. A plant with a daily production of 8 dam' (50 000 bbl) of oil would thus require some 68 kt of raw shale daily. This is more than the average daily production from any underground mining operation.

Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and surficial evaporite brine. Those advantageously located now supply world markets. Materials of similar grades and magnitude, but less favorably located, will come into production as present sources are depleted and markets expand. Some of these potential supplies have been explored, and are reserves in the sense of known availability and quality. Reserves herein are of two classes, those proved by close drilling and assaying, and those of only probable status because their scale and grade are unsystematically indicated. Possible resources include similar materials whose bulk can only be inferred on indirect evidence. All figures apply to total materials in the ground. No allowance is made for losses in mining, evaporation, beneficiation, or chemical processing.

The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: 1) as a diverse group of fine-grained minerals, 2) as a rock term, and 3) as a particle size term. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that comprise it; therefore, the definition must be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine grained material comprised largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates comprised mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many definitions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic, e.g., halloysite and flint clay. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on various grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 pm. as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 pm. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term clay for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or argillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally understood by those who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material, and it has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial minerals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1988, 1989, and 1990 productions according to the US Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1992). As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodities, each having somewhat different mineralogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. In this section these commodities are organized as follows: 1) bentonite, 2) common clay, 3) hormites, and 4) kaolin. Fuller's earth is discussed in both the bentonite and hormite chapters. Fuller's earth is a term based on use, and both bentonites and hormites are sold as fuller's earth. The overlapping is particularly evident where both bentonite and non-bentonite fuller's earth are used for the same purposes or products, such as in drilling mud, bleaching or clarifying fats and oils, and carriers for insecticides and fertilizers. Kaolin, ball clay, halloysite, and refractory clays are grouped together because they consist mainly of minerals of the kaolin group. 1. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) is a computer based model whose objective is to quantify the risks of hard rock tunneling in terms of cost and time to completion. The main feature of the TCM is the simulation of the tunnel construction. The simulation makes it possible to incorporate in the time and cost computations the effect of uncertainties in geologic conditions and in productivity rates and costs. The cost and time computed with the TCM will be in form of distributions that allow a quantitative risk assessment. The TCM will be useful as an estimating tool permitting the estimator to rigorously relate uncertainties of individual factors to the end result. The TCM will also make it possible to evaluate technological innovations and to identify problem areas in existing technologies. The TCM consists of three interacting submodels: the geologic submodel, the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator. The goal of this paper is to describe the geologic submodel, whereas the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator will be described in the following paper by Moavenzadeh et al. First it will be shown how interactions between the geologic submodel and other parts of the TCM will impose certain requirements on the geologic submodel. These requirements, which relate primarily to the description of geologic conditions by a set of problem-oriented parameters and the quantification of uncertainty associated with geologic conditions, will then be discussed. INTRODUCTION Over the past several years, Ford, Bacon & Davis Utah Inc. (FB&DU) has been involved in research, development, and engineering activities concerning uranium mill tailings; specifically of interest in this paper are efforts in radon gas exhalation and surface flux attenuation measurements, environmental influences on radon fluxes, and basic research into radon gas behavior. Our projects have included measurements of effectiveness of specific cover material in attenuating radon surface fluxes from mill tailings, characterization of the parameters in cover materials and tailings that influence radon exhalation, long-term tailings stabilization planning, determination of the effects of moisture on radon emanation and diffusion from ores, and determinations of baseline radon fluxes. Our efforts have been sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Tennessee Valley Authority, the commercial uranium industry, and we are presently engaged in efforts for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Much of the material presented in this paper is taken from our published reports on radon flux attenuation and tailings stabilization (Macbeth et al., 1978; Nielson et al., 1980; Rogers et_ al., 1980; Thamer et al al., 1980). CHARACTERIZATION OF RADON GAS EXHALATION One dimensional diffusion theory based on Fick's laws is the basis for the modeling of radon gas migration through large quantities of porous tailings and cover materials applied over the large areas of tailings piles. The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is linited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized.

Under sponsorship of the USBM and later of the DOE, a new type of rotary rock drill has been developed by The Bendix Corporation. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. This drill allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. The paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal mining, metal/nonmetal mining, and for general civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

Recycled materials are increasingly being used in road construction to supplement natural aggregate derived from crushed stone, sand, and gravel. An understanding of the amount of substitution that is taking place, its economics, and factors affecting the level of substitution is useful in estimating the potential for recycling and in assessing the total supply of aggregate. While U.S. consumption of recycled aggregates from crushed concrete is estimated to have increased 160 percent between 1994 and 1996; it comprised less than 5 percent of total aggregates consumed in 1995. Construction waste supply is regional, and is determined by infrastructure decay and replacement rates. Aggregate recycling rates are greater in urban areas where infrastructure is being replaced, natural aggregate resources are limited, disposal costs are high, or strict environmental regulations prevent disposal. Recycling is expected to increase as construction contractors attempt to save on transportation, disposal, and new material costs. Aggregate producers include recycled material as an option to consumers in order to prolong the life of their reserves and improve their range of products. Recycled aggregates can be a supplement for natural aggregates in selected applications, but their use should be evaluated locally based upon relative cost, quality, and market factors Because aggregate recycling is often affected by local and regional transportation systems, disposal and tipping fees, resource supply, the market for specific products, and municipal support, costs for three representative fixed site operations of different sizes were modeled. Under study conditions, all were found to be profitable, but highly dependent upon local tipping fees and market prices, which can differ significantly by location. Smaller operations were found to have different operational dynamics, often requiring creative marketing or incentives to maintain profitability.

This paper describes the design, equipment selection and onshore fabrication of the largest facilities module ever installed in a single lift in the Gulf of Mexico. Measuring 35.5 x 70.1 x 21.3 m (110 x 230 x 70 ft), the three operating level structure houses Frasch process sulfur mining equipment and weighed nearly 49 million N (5500 tons) during lift. An operating weight of over 74 million N (8300 st) combines with bridge reactions acting on the in-place module and results in a total operating vertical load on the supporting platform deck of about 107 million N (12,000 tons). A Vierendeel truss structural system was selected for framing the module to allow maximum equipment access and routing flexibility for complex, insulated large diameter process piping. Research and finite element analysis of crimp plate siding behavior in shear was carried out during selection of siding type for the module. An interactive design sequence was carried out that incorporated in-place operational criteria, onshore fabrication considerations, complex process equipment requirements, plus load-out, ocean transport and offshore lift analyses. Project schedule dictated that design, procurement and fabrication be fast-tracked with parallel activities accelerated to the maximum extent possible. Design and construction of this largest and most complex module was done concurrently with 52 other components of the project including jackets, decks, process and living quarters modules as well as two 122 x 22 m (400 x 72 ft) sulfur tankers. Total tonnage of steel structures for the project exceeded 90.7 kt (100,000 st). The 5 kt (5500 st) mining module proved the viability and costeffectiveness of larger modules than commonly used in Gulf of Mexico waters. This technical advance can be matched with economic opportunity for other large-scale offshore installations.

Approximately 10 to 20 pct of exhaust aerosol mass from diesel equipped vehicles operating without exhaust controls is attributable to particles in the 1.0-10 µm size range. Recent in-mine measurements suggest that, in addition to reducing overall exhaust aerosol mass concentrations, the use of waterbath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) may significantly reduce the concentration of diesel exhaust particles larger than approximately 0.5 µm aerodynamic diameter. This implies that a measurement system that discriminates between diesel and mineral dust aerosols on the basis of aerosol size would have different accuracies depending on use of a water scrubber. To test this hypothesis, laboratory measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine diesel exhaust aerosol penetration efficiency through a water scrubber as a function of size and engine operating conditions. Size distributions were determined using a Micro-Orifice, Uniform Deposit Impactor. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO x, O2 and gas-phase hydrocarbon concentrations were also measured. No significant effect was found for these gases other than a slight decrease in NOx emissions. The water scrubber served as a moderate aerosol control with reductions in mass concentrations of about 29±9 pct under most conditions. This reduction occurred for particles less than 0.2 µm and greater than 0.6 µm aerodynamic diameter. Coal dust aerosols are mostly larger than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter. With use of a water scrubber, separating the aerosol into two parts, greater and less than about 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter during sampling, results in collection of diesel and coal dust aerosol accurate to within 10 pct. Without a water scrubber in operation, such a sampling protocol would only be accurate to approximately 15 pct.

Anyone with geothermal experience can readily attest that geothermal operations are a natural extension of oil and gas operations. A geothermal company and an oil company need the same type of people to do the same kind of work. In the geothermal industry, geologists and geophysicists define prospects through surface geology, analysis of surface seeps, magnetics, gravity, and resistivity surveys - techniques similar to those used in the petroleum industry. In addition, shallow (250-ft) temperature gradient holes often are used in geothermal operations. Landmen take geothermal leases that are patterned after oil and gas leases. Exploratory drilling is done with the same drilling contractors and same drilling rigs, with minor modification. Drilling foremen and drilling engineers share the same objective of making the most hole, in the shortest time, at the least cost, with a proper completion. Petroleum engineers test the wells, design the completions, determine the reserves, make economic calculations, work with the tax assessor, and manage the reservoirs. Production engineers build roads, locations and pipelines, install gas/liquid separators and meters, and operate production and injection facilities. A contract to sell steam to a public utility is required. Various governmental regulations, permits, environmental concerns, and public affairs pose similar problems in both industries. Also required of both are top management people who are acquainted with geologic risk, prepared to accept million dollar dry holes, willing to bid competitively at lease sales, and able to invest large sums based on a technology not yet fully proven. Successful geothermal development requires in-depth financial ability similar to that required for petroleum development. A high capital investment is required early for leases, geological and geophysical work, and exploratory and confirmation drilling. After

With high expectations and promises, computers were introduced to the mining industry in the late 1950s and 1960s. Applications spread in the 1970s when capabilities began to catch up to early promises, and people within the industry began to see the benefits of using computers in business and engineering. The 1980s have seen a wide acceptance of computers, both large and small, and the use of computers is accelerating throughout the industry. Computers have changed dramatically over the last 25 years. The power of some microcomputers matches the capabilities of main frame computers from less than 10 years ago. The variety of software on these micros exceeds what is available on many larger computers today. Changes over the next 10 years are likely to be greater than those of the last 10 years. Making use of available computer technology while trying to cope with the rapid changes in this industry will take much effort within mining. To take advantage of existing computers, consider and evaluate: project needs and applications; professional, administrative, and support personnel; computer software and technology; and computer and related hardware. Note that this list is in the order of decreasing importance. These categories are also presented in the order for which organization and solutions should be provided to get the most out of computers. To start with a computer and go up the list has cost many mining companies needless expenditures, wear and tear on personnel, and frustration. It is assumed for this article that the need for computer tools is self evident. You can do without a computer by using the appropriate techniques (manual methods) with any required shortcuts plus a lot of personnel time. Indeed, several companies are doing that as a "solution" to what to do with their excess engineering personnel in these lean times. However, the future may be better served if some of these people could be prepared to handle the applications and technology presently available. People and Problems To present the factors related to turning the computer into a productivity aide, it may be enlightening to examine some common people problems that reduce productivity. The most valuable resource any mining company has is its mining professionals. And, particularly with computers, people either make the successes or create the barriers, not the machines. The following list of people problems (syndromes and complexes) has been amply observed during some 23 years of the author's experience with computers and their applications in mining. Home Grown Syndrome - "Nobody else can really understand my problem or provide `exactly' what I need to solve it." While there may be some truth to this syndrome, it would be an unusual project that cannot be handled with existing solutions for at least 75-80% of the needs. Having a base to build on will also speed the development of any remaining needs. It does not seem justified to start all over for a new application, even if "our problem is unique." Not Invented Here Syndrome - This "justification" for the continued existence and budgets of some groups has various forms: "It wasn't done here so it obviously can't do the project the way I think it should be done"; and, "If it wasn't invented here, it obviously

An overview presentation of the fast-track start up of Cerro Colorado, a new copper heap leach project in Chile's Atacama' desert. A brief explanation 'of location of the property, exploration history, geol-ogy, reserves and development are presented. The overview includes mining, crushing, agglomeration, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning recovery process. Challenges and requirements specific to heap leach systems will be addressed and analyzed. A detailed description will be given of the mobile heap leach conveying and stacking systems used in the building of heaps for on-and off-pad operations.

Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.

Working places in underground mines are formed by digging. The main feature of underground working places is that they are surrounded by rock. Digging through rock, which is main operation of mining, generates great reacting force. In many cases, supports are required to maintain a roof. Working places change their location with progress of mining operation. Therefore, for automate the work in such environment, a locomotive mechanism which can endure great reacting force, can support effectively the roof and floor, and has high moving performance in rough environment, might be required. In narrow underground environment which is surrounded by rock, it is possible to generate great fixing force by means of a jack which is set between the roof and floor or both side wall it is usual to apply a jack as anchor post for fixing machinery or reacting force. Self advancing supports widely used in long wall faces in coal mines could be said an example of locomotive mechanism with propping up fixing method. However it is difficult to say that ordinary self advancing supports have enough adaptability for various condition of the roof and floor. New locomotive method for underground working place 'Swing Phase Locomotion' is proposed. It is achieved by mechanism based on frame type support and synchronous control of jacks. Furthermore, to achieved high adaptability to various conditions of the roof and floor, another walking mechanism has been developed. The mechanism employs propping up jack as its legs.

US Borax began exploration in southeast Alaska in the summer of 1971 with a staff of two, Barry Watson and Jackie Stephens, based in Spokane, WA. After several years of prospect examinations in the islands west of Ketchikan, AK, and with the able assistance of prospector-pilot Kenny Eichner, Jackie Stephens proposed and organized a boat-based, helicopter-supported, stream sediment sampling program to explore the western contact of the Coast Range intrusive complex on the mainland. The rationale for this included: the extension of known mineral trends from Canada into southeastern Alaska along favorable geologic zones; the western contact area of the Coast Range intrusives with metasediments and metavolcanics was a favorable target for metals exploration as shown by numerous small prospects. Knowledge gained from mineral exploration of the island areas indicated that they were well mineralized, but already well explored, and that the known mineral potential was probably present in subeconomic quantities (Brooks, et al.). Publications of the US Bureau of Mines and other scientific agencies were gathered and every prospect within the southem southeastern Alaska area was plotted. This in itself lent a tremendous amount of knowledge to the total exploration program. US Borax's McLean Arm copper property on Prince of Wales Island was drilled and dropped while this compilation of data was proceeding. We found that many companies had followed one another around the island areas, but little or no exploration had been done on the west side of the Coast Range, and that many explorationists flatly stated that the west side of the Coast Range was barren of mineralization. In summary, although some of the shoreline and near shoreline areas of the mainland had been explored, no organized boat-helicopter exploration program had been done along the favorable western zone of the Coast Range Intrusive complex. We decided to use a boat as a floating hotel for the crews that were to be helicoptered into the back country from tidewater for our initial stream-sediment sampling program.

Gold mining has undergone a massive revival in Australia within the past decade. With very few exceptions, these operations are involved with the development of deposits which have been previously and partially worked by underground methods. In most cases, current operations have involved the open cut mining of near-surface remnants or low-grade hanging wall and footwall mineralisation. A growing number of mines are, however, progressing to the development of underground workings either as extensions of existing open cuts or as "stand alone" projects. These operations vary in scale from the Kalgoorlie operations of North Kalgurli Mines Limited and Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to the small scale "gouging" operations of individuals and partnerships. The individual production rates rarely exceed 200 000 tonnes per year, primarily because of the magnitude of reserves or the style of access available for rehabilitation. The narrow-vein mines were initially re-opened using the traditional methods, in particular shrinkage stoping and cut-and-fill stoping. As a result of experience gained in various ground conditions, certain variants have become popular. This paper investigates the fate of the traditional methods in Australian practice, and reviews some of the recently applied variants. This involves not only a perusal of current practices, but also an assessment of the influence of recent technological development on the economics of narrow-vein mining. Some consideration is also given to the effects of previously employed stoping techniques on efforts to access remnant blocks in the re-development of old mines.
