The Olympic Dam deposit was discovered in July 1975 with the intersection of 38 m (125 ft) of 1.05% copper in diamond drill hole RD 1. A further eight holes were drilled with only marginal encouragement to November 1976 when RD 10 cored 170 m (558 ft) at 2.12% copper and an economic discovery was confirmed. The discovery of Olympic Dam is an excellent example of the application of broad-scale scientifically based conceptual studies to area selection combined with the backing of an exploration management willing to support its exploration scientists in testing their ideas with stratigraphic drilling. It also illustrates the persistence required in mineral exploration. The project began in 1969-1972 with the development of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model suggested that the alteration of continental-type basaltic rocks could release copper into solution from which it could be concentrated in favorable stratigraphic positions. In mid-1972, this concept was applied to a review of the Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic rocks in South Australia aimed at defining targets for stratigraphic copper deposits.

"We could blow that damned fort out of existence if we could run a mine shaft under it!," claimed one Union soldier eyeing Bobby Lee's Petersburg defense line protecting Richmond and Jeff Davis. Puncture the line, take the hill behind, and the Confederate capital would celebrate Yankee jubilee, 1864. That was June. At 4:15 am, July 30, mine boss Henry Reese, sergeant, 48th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, gingerly entered the mine, dark and muddy. Something had gone wrong. The mine, set to go off at 3:30, hadn't exploded. It had to be checked. The main mine gallery, 1.5 m high x 1.4 m wide (5 x 4 ft) narrowing at the top to 0.6 m (2 ft), forced Reese into a tuck run. Some¬where up there in that 155 m (511 ft) stretch running 6 m (20 ft) under the rebel works, moisture may have doused the charge. Or maybe a fuse splice went awry. Or maybe there was live fire steaming like a locomo¬tive towards 3.6 t (4 st) of black powder. Perhaps now Reese wished this sprint was shorter. For the mine boasted a record break¬ing distance in military annals. Lieut. Col. Henry Pleasants Credit goes to Lieut. Col. Henry Pleas¬ants, commander of the 48th, who overheard the soldier's claim for what a mine could do. In peacetime, Pleasants had been a railroad engineer working on the Sand Patch Tunnel. He later switched to mining, working for the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. He even married the daughter of the editor of The Miners Journal. Grieving over his wife's early death, Pleasants plunged into the ven¬ture of war. This Union officer took the mine idea to the brass. Headquarters was less than enthu¬siastic. "The chief engineer of the Army and the rest of the regular Army wiseacres said it was not feasible," Pleasants wrote to his uncle. The pros scoffed, ticking off a list of horribles: No mine has ever gone that far, men will suffocate and be crushed, the rebs will countermine, the men will be trapped. Still, Pleasants eked out a signal to proceed. In the meantime, the miners of the 48th had commenced to dig anyway. It was like the 48th to proceed against the odds. The 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers The 48th had been recruited from Penn¬sylvania's Schuylkill County, anthracite coal mining country. The mines had been torn with strife over wages. Strikes and rioting were prevalent. Murder was not unknown. This "Buckshot" resistance centered in Pottsville, PA. It forced the governor to call in troops. Coal was in high demand to run the war machine. Pennsylvania operators worried that a military draft would stir up violence, closing the mines altogether and further shift¬ing business to emerging Illinois mines. Men lit out for the western gold fields in the tens of thousands. Secret societies bred in the mining camps invited draft agents to dance at the end of a rope. Jobs threatened by cheap, victorious South¬ern labor were one warning intended to get immigrant miners interested in the war. Operators gave miners time off to help de¬fend Philadelphia during Lee's thrust to Gettysburg. Even so, the draft spawned new violence and troop intercession. Soldiers were not welcome. The dust had barely settled when into this Pennsylvania "minefield" marched the 48th on a recruitment drive. The 48th had been in Lexington, KY on guard duty. When it came time for the regiment to pull out, the townspeople had prevailed upon authorities to extend the regiment's stay. Finally ordered to move out, the 48th was feted by a hanky-waving, tear-dropping send-off to the lyrical lament Auld Lang Syne. And Kentucky fancied itself to be rebel. Striding smartly into the Pennsylvania coalfields, the 48th attracted 400 recruits and marched off under regimental colors specially made by the proud citizens of none other than Pottsville, PA.

Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (1), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profitability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus minimum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12). Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-lowgrade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). INTRODUCTION The radiological health significance of thorium-230 stems from its tendency to separate from the uranium238 parent, concentrate in bone tissues, and to subsequently irradiate the radiosensitive tissues lining the bone surfaces and the bone marrow. Indeed, thorium-230 may be the radionuclide which contributes the major dose following intake of natural uranium (Hartley and Pasternack 1979). This is reflected by the most recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, which specify the limits shown in Table I for the annual intake of radionuclides by occupationally exposed workers (ICRP 1979). Because of the greater toxicity and different metabolism of thorium-230, monitoring only for uranium-238 does not satisfactorily identify the possible hazard from thorium-230 nor does it provide any real indication of the metabolism or biodynamics of these two radionuclides. Thorium-230 has a half-life of 80,000 years and can be detected by direct counting of the alpha particles or photons emitted during its transformation to radium-226. The 4.69 and 4.62 MeV alpha particles are distinctive and specific indicators of thorium-230 and are emitted with abundances of 76% and 24%, respectively. The principal photon, a 68 keV gamma ray, is emitted in only 0.37% of the transformations and is, therefore, not useful for low level measurements. The other photons emitted have even lower yields, or, in the case of radium L x-rays, are non-specific and, hence, useless for quantification. High sensitivity measurements of thorium-230 currently are usually accomplished by wet washing of the sample substrate, quantitative chemical separation of thorium atoms, and, finally, direct measurement of the alpha particles emitted from a massless deposition. This procedure is complicated, expensive, and time-consuming, and subject to interferences from uranium, other actinides, and other thorium isotopes. Recently, the feasibility of low-level measurement of thorium-230 by neutron activation analysis (NAA) was demonstrated (Kathren, Desrosiers and Church 1980). Two principal variations of the NAA method were used in this study: 1) instrumental NAA technique and 2) post-irradiation radiochemical separations (RCS). Instrumental NAA procedure is a nondestrucive technique which is preferred because of its simplicity. The procedure is as follows: after irradiation with a known neutron fluence, the samples are transferred to a clean container and quantitative gamma spectroscopy performed. With the radiochemical separations procedure, the sample is initially treated as in the instrumental technique. However, after irradiation, a known amount of "carrier" is added to the sample. The element(s) of interest are then separated from the rest of the matrix by distillation, precipitation and extraction techniques. The resulting sample, now free of interferring elements, is then ready for gamma-ray analysis. The use of a "carrier" is to determine the loss of element-of-interest during the chemical separations process. The neutron activation cross section of thorium-230 has an epicadmium resonance value of 1,010 barns (Mughahghab and Garber 1976) and a thermal neutron cross section of 23 barns. The 25.52 hr thorium-231 produced releases two photons of significance: an 84 keV complex, (6.5% yield) and 25.6 keV (15% yield) (Lederer and Shirley 1978). The 84 keV complex is particularly useful for quantification since neither natural uranium, thorium, their daughters, or activation products emit photons in this region. However, the higher yield of the 25.6 keV photon may result in increased sensitivity if there are no other photons of similar energy emitted by other radionuclides in the sample. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Thorium-230 standard stock solution was prepared from a pure sample of the oxide purchased from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From this stock solution a series of samples were prepared for irradiation in the TRIGA Mark I reactor at Reed College. Various dilutions were prepared as well as thorium-230 spiked urine samples. Irradiation times varied from 1 to 54 minutes in a neutron fluence rate of 1.84 x 1012 n/ cu m-sec. The neutron spectrum was abundant in thermal neutrons, having a Cd ratio of approximately 10. Treated urine samples were also analyzed by the NAA instrumental method. Analysis of untreated urine samples was not possible due to the high background

Ieropigi Fe-Ni deposit is located in northern Greece, in Kastoria?s prefecture near Albania?s borders. A laterite profile exposed by opencast mining and placed near the basement of the mine was chosen for sampling. Ten samples, representing ?pure? Fe-Ni ore, ophiolite-bedrock, ?red? ophiolite and ?enriched? ophiolite were collected, based on macroscopic observation. The samples were analysed by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD) for the determination of the mineral phases. Iron and Nickel concentrations of the same samples were also determined by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methodology. The Fe-Ni ore samples consists predomi-nantly of hematite, goethite, chrysotile (serpentine), saponite and quartz. ?Red? ophiolite samples consists mainly of chrysotile, hematite, quartz, calcite and small amounts of paragonite and goethite. Bedrock and ?enriched ophiolite samples are comprised of chrysotile, hematite, calcite, quartz, nontronite, paragonite and sepiolite. The Fe content ranges between 13% and 49% in Fe-Ni ore samples and between 7% and 10% in ophiolite samples. The Ni content ranges between 1% and 3% in Fe-Ni ore samples and between 0.3% and 4.5% in ophiolite samples (the higher content is observed in the so-called ?enriched? ophiolite). A correlation between Fe-Ni concentrations and mineral assemblages is being attempted in order to evaluate the nickel-rich mineral phases. It is shown that the nickeliferous minerals are serpentine, hematite, goethite and saponite.

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. Mr. Richard Hoppe, Senior Editor of Engineering & Mining Journal, in an article of the February, 1979, issue, entitled "Winning the Battle Against Bad Ground", said, "In hardrock mining operations in the western U.S., particularly underground uranium mines where exceedingly difficult ground is common, no roof support system has been accepted more quickly than the Split Set friction bolt invented by Dr. James J. Scott and developed by Ingersoll-Rand Co." This paper describes how Friction Rock Stabilizers function and presents technical data to show the uniqueness of the Friction Stabilizer system. A prototype remote placer drill (RPD) has been designed and successfully tested in the offshore gold district of Nome, AK. The RPD system is unique in its design and in the cooperative support that was provided during its development by industry, academia and government. The RPD was conceived as a low-cost, rapid drill sampling system for the reconnaissance of marine precious metal placer deposits. The drill functions as a counter- f lush system. It incorporates a dual wall casing and a rotating percussion bit driven by way of a drill rod through the central eductor casing by a heavy duty pneumatic rock drill. The cost of drill sampling in the exploration of marine precious metal placers has traditionally been high due to the technical difficulties imposed by the environment and the remoteness of the sampling target. The objective was to reduce capital and operating costs of a drilling program through the development of a portable system incorporating drill compoments having a high power-weight ratio that could be deployed from work vessels of opportunity. A principal design requirement was to operate the system remotely from the sea floor with only flexible connections to the surface. This includes cable for deployment and retrieval and hoses for air supply and sample recovery, thus making the drill system semi-independent of the vessel's sea-induced motion. The prototype RPD underwent full operational test off Nome, AK in late summer 1988. It was deployed from the landing door of a modified LCT vessel, and rigged for a single pass of 5 m (16.5 ft). More than 50 holes were drilled in a wide variety of bottom materials typical of the off shore Nome submerged beach placers. The prototype RPD proved to be an overall success, recovering representative samples throughout the section in all but the heavy boulder ground. Compared with a conventional drill system on board that was assigned to a production drilling system, the RPD was capable of reliably sampling moderate ground less than 6 m (20 ft) in thickness, using a smaller crew and operating in higher sea conditions.

Anionic conditioning of phosphate ores prior to fatty acid flotation is a critical step that determines the selectivity, recovers and, hence, the economics of the process. However, the chemical mechanisms operating during this conditioning step are not very well established. In this work, a comprehensive surrey of plant practice was conducted. Then, adsorption on flotation feed and francolite were studied under simulated plant conditions. Different adsorption mechanisms were found to be dominant under laboratory and plant conditions. In plant water, there was sonic physisorption of oleic acid on phosphate flotation feed and francolite, in addition to chemisorption. However, in distilled water under laboratory conditions, only chemisorption was detected. Fuel oil reduces the residual oleic acid in solution after adsorption, which explains the beneficial role of extender in phosphate flotation. The dissolved species in solution arising from the flotation feed or plant processing water are shown to clearly play a major role in determining the adsorption of oleic- acid on the substrates. The study also specifically demonstrates that, for the results to be used commercially, it is important to conduct the tests under plant mixing conditions and with the same plant water chemistry.

Spherical or oil agglomeration has been recognised for many years as a possible process for the recovery of mineraVmetal values. BP has investigated the potential of spherical agglomeration for a number of minerals as have other workers. Testwork has also been carried out by both BP and others on the selective agglomeration of fine coal. The spherical agglomeration of both minerals and coal depends on the use of an immiscible liquid e.g. a hydrocarbon which is added to a suspension of the solids in water. On agitation the oil is distributed over oleophilic/hydrophobic surfaces and particle impact allows inter-particle liquid bridges to form causing agglomeration. It is also possible to enhance the oleophilicity of the material to be recovered by the use of collectors similar to those used in froth flotation.

Introduction Geologic ore deposit models are key to any exploration program. In the search for ore deposits, the geologist first tries to understand the genesis of known ore bodies. During reconnaissance and evaluation of a prospect, a valid exploration model of a known ore body can help the explorationist focus on critical geologic attributes of the target area. Exploration models can conserve exploration funds that might otherwise be spent collecting data not critical to delineating an ore body. This article examines the benefits of using models, factors to be considered in developing models, and examples of the way recent models have evolved. New exploration concepts and techniques are developed in response to increased competition in the mining industry. New techniques can give an exploration group a slight edge that may translate into a discovery. Mine geology staffs may find previously unlooked for extensions to the ore body by applying new genetic concepts. When all appropriate techniques are applied to exploration and mining efforts, greater efficiency and increased profits may result. Before the 1950s, scientists speculated on the genesis of ore deposits and other natural phenomena. But they presented their results as if universal and final, even though they applied to only a few deposits. Because it did not provide sufficient criteria to distinguish the genetic processes, the classic conflict between hydrothermalists, epitomized by Lindgren, and nonhydrothermalists did not help the minerals explorationist much. Important information about individual ore deposits, such as age of the host rocks and mineralization, composition of the mineralizing fluids, and separation of mineralizing and nonmineralizing events in the paragenetic sequence, could not be gathered with past equipment and methods. But these early concepts of ore genesis contained excellent empirical observations, perhaps the most useful parts of these hypotheses. Through the years, prospectors have found most of the ore deposits in the world using direct observations and their collective empirical wisdom - an empirical model. The geologist's contribution becomes increasingly important after the more obvious surficial ore deposits have been discovered. In Europe and North America that time has arrived. With the introduction of sophisticated equipment and matching techniques in the 1950s in geochronology, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, and computers, many previously equivocal genetic questions can be resolved. This proliferation of highly technical data has allowed the construction of many well-founded genetic models.

Contaminant transport of mine and mill tailings is controlled by the hydrologic flow regime and the geochemical mobility of the contaminants. Contaminant' mobility is primarily determined by chemical reactions occurring within an interface zone between the tailings and soil The large geochemical differences between tailings and groundwater create a disequilibrium in the groundwater with respect to the soils when seepage from tailings enters the groundwater. Precipitation and dissolution reactions involving the major chemistry occur to return the perturbed system to chemical equilibrium between groundwater and minerals. Retardation of trace elements depends upon the chemical character of the groundwater and the adsorption substrates. In the case of uranium mill tailings, the mobility of contaminants is controlled primarily by precipitation/dissolution reactions which neutralize the pH, modify the Eh (redox potential), and produce highly adsorptive substrate for retardation of trace elements.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell Mine at Balmertown, in the Northwestern corner of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The mine operates at 1500 stpd and produces in excess of 300,000 oz of gold annually. Recent changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10-15 % increase in gravity recovery. The circuit changes responsible for these improvements will be the focus of this paper.

Each year, about 45 Mt (50 million st) of flotation tailings are discarded in Florida phosphate operations. These tailings only contain about 4% of the phosphate in the ore. However, more than half of the phosphate in the tailings is concentrated in the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size fraction at grades of up to 20% P205. Many phosphate producers have attempted to solve this problem by floating the +425 µm (+35 mesh) flotation feed separately. However, phosphate recoveries in these circuits are typically only 60%. For seven sampled phosphate operations, the phosphate content of the +600 µm (+28 mesh) fatty acid tailings ranged from 15% to 25% P205. In every case, the +600 µm (+28 mesh) fatty acid tailings was higher in grade than the overall flotation feed. Attempts to efficiently recover this coarse phosphate have apparently been unsuccessful at these seven phosphate operations. Recovery of this coarse phosphate would provide an additional 900 kt to 2.5 Mt (I to 2.7 million st) of phosphate annually and add an additional year to the reserves of these important deposits. A typical central Florida phosphate matrix is composed of three different mixtures of minerals. The +1.18 mm (+ 16 mesh) portion is chiefly phosphate pebbles and is beneficiated by sizing. The -106 µm (-150 mesh) portion contains virtually all of the clay minerals and is discarded in the hydrocyclone overflow. The -l mm +106 µm (-16 +150 mesh) material is a mixture of quartz and phosphate minerals.

Precious metals exploration is increasingly involved with concealed, deeper-seated gold-silver deposits which exhibit considerably more challenges to the geologist than near-surface, oxidized ores. Thus, cost-efficient, rapid and more detailed target selection and definition will be crucial for gold-silver exploration in the 1990s (Kral, 1990; Woodall, 1992). Although new developments in geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques have made significant contributions, the powerful capabilities offered by alteration mineralogy continue to remain untapped in many cases

The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties agreeing to a decision, and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. A law was then passed requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading fi¬nancial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation. One hundred-fifty years before cor¬porate surety bonds, outcrops near Richmond, VA, were being mined. These surface mines became under¬ground mines. Today, both are still being used to obtain a leading energy source, coal. Since that time, more than 5956 km2 (1.47 million acres) of coal mined lands have been reclaimed in the US (Coal News, August, 1987). More than 25,000 state and Federal mining permits cover¬ing 14,164 km2 (3.5 million acres) have been issued during the last 10 years. Coal production has exceeded 7.2 Gt (8 billion st). More than 5665 km2 (1.4 million acres) of mined land has been reclaimed by active coal mining opera¬tions and 267 km2 (66,000 acres) of abandoned mined lands have been re¬claimed by others. Reclamation bonds were freely writ¬ten in the 1970s. So why are they almost extinct today? Contract bond losses have been severe in the past several years, sureties reporting losses exceed¬ing 110%. But the same proof is not provided on coal reclamation bonds. A surety bond is generally required when one party has an agreement with another party, and that party wants a guarantee from a third party that a job will be completed according to the terms and conditions of a written contract. In the case of a reclamation bond, the surety company (surety) is the financial party. It extends the credit and a guarantee to the obligee (the State, Commonwealth, or Office of Surface Mining) that the principal (the coal operator/company) will complete the terms and conditions of the contract (the rules and regulations governing mining and reclamation). The Surety Association of America defines a surety bond as an agreement providing for monetary compensation should there be a failure to perform specified acts within a stated period. Webster's Dictionary defines surety in the following ways: "l: the state of being sure; 2a: a pledge or other formal engagement given for the fulfillment of an undertaking and; 3b: one who has become legally liable for the debt, de¬fault, or failure in duty of another." Banks never make accommodation loans. Either the loan is good or no loan is made. Surety companies feel the same way about surety bonds. In fact, the average person does not realize the dangers of becoming surety for another. How does a surety determine if a company is worthy of receiving surety credit? How is a coal account under¬written today for an obligation that may not be released for many years? When a surety company executes a reclama¬tion bond, it financially puts its name behind the coal company and its guaran¬tee that should the coal miner default on the obligation, the surety will fulfill the contract. How is the surety to determine if a coal company may still be in business five, 10, 20, or 40 years from today?

It is imperative that the hydrogeologic frame- work and the ground water flow systems of a Potential mine area be investigated prior to initiation of mining. Such investigations are necessary so that potential mine water inflow problems can be anticipated and controlled. Obvious difficulties can arise if large inflows of ground water occur in underground workings. Costs of water removal and disposal, if not foreseen and included in economic planning, can severely limit or eliminate profit from a mining operation. Safety problems associated with large inflows are an additional potential problem. The inflow of water into a mine necessarily alters the associated ground water system. The inflow also may impact nearby surface water regimes, depending upon the interaction of the surface water and ground water systems. The inflow of water into a mine inevitably causes a decline in the ground water levels in the vicinity of the mine. This decline may be restricted to a small area or it may extend a considerable distance, depending upon the hydrogeologic properties of the associated hydrostratigraphic units. A decrease in surface flow will result if the area of ground water level decline intersects a stream or spring that is hydraulically connected to the ground water system. Mine inflow problems historically have been evaluated after-the-fact. Premining hydrologic investigations only recently have been initiated. Brown's (1977)* report on anticipated hydrologic impacts of oil shale mining in the Piceance Basin of Colorado is an example of premining hydrologic planning. Observed difficulties inherent in designing a data collection network and then utilizing the data to predict mine inflow have led us to the preparation of this manuscript. This manuscript reflects a two-phase effort. The first phase describes and develops analytical and numerical techniques for mine inflow prediction. Emphasis in this section is placed on the selection and application of data collection techniques and data analysis procedures. The second phase applies the prediction technique(s) developed during phase 1 to two existing mines. The objective of phase 1 efforts is to evaluate the hydrologic variables associated with surface water systems and ground water systems that can affect the inflow of water into an underground mine. Subsequently these variables are incorporated into predictive techniques for estimating underground mine water inflow and its effect on associated ground water and surface water systems. The specific objectives of phases 1 and 2 are to: 1) Determine the hydrologic parameters required for predicting underground mine water in- flow and the potential effects of the inflow on surface and ground water systems. The hydrologic parameters represent both premining and past initiation conditions. 2) Outline methods for obtaining the necessary input data for the predictive techniques in pre- mining and post initiation periods. 3) Present existing numerical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow including assumptions Ad required input. 4) Evaluate existing numerical techniques previously tabulated based on their applicability to mine water inflow prediction. 5) Attempt to develop analytical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow. 6) Develop, through modification of existing models, a general mathematical model as a numerical technique for predicting underground mine water inflow and the resultant effects on surface and ground water systems. 7) Apply the predictive techniques to two existing mines selected for this purpose. 8) Compare the predicted inflow rates to measured inflow rates at both mines. 9) Compare predicted impact on district hydrology to observed impacts where possible. 10) Evaluate the predictive technique.

[Introduction] Section 122 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, Public Law 9595, directed the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, to review all relevant information and determine whether emissions of radioactive pollutants into ambient air will cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health. In August 1979, EPA published a preliminary report on assessments of public health impact resulting from emissions of radionuclides into air from a broad spectrum of major source categories (1). A section of this document presented a theoretical analysis of the radioactive airborne emissions from several non-uranium mines including iron, copper, zinc, clay, limestone, fluorspar, and phosphate. Since 1978 EPA's Las Vegas Laboratory has been gathering field data on actual radionuclide emissions from these mines to support the earlier theoretical analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of those field measurements in comparison with the assumed values for the theoretical analysis. Data were presented in EPA's preliminary report on both gaseous radon-222 and particulate uranium-238 emissions from non-uranium mines. Most of the emissions data were rough estimates based upon the uranium content of the ore. Preliminary data from a few field studies were also used. Although both the theoretical and field studies by EPA were concerned with radon-222 and radioactive particulate emissions, this paper will concentrate only on the radon effluents. Radon from mines seems to have the greatest potential for possible health effects due to radiation. Data on particulate emissions are presented in other technical reports (2-5). [Theoretical Study] The theoretical emission data are presented in Table I. The estimates for the iron, zinc, and clay mines are based upon preliminary measurements taken by the Las Vegas laboratory. The estimates for the other mines were made assuming that 20% of the total radon-222 in the ore was released during the mining process and the radon release rate from the exposed ore surface was a factor of two greater than that resulting from mining. [ ] Dose assessments for radon from these mines were carried out using model facilities located on generic sites (1). The AIRDOS-II computer code (for estimating dispersion of airborne pollutants) with some minor modifications was used to determine working level exposures to a maximally exposed individual and a regional population. A conversion factor for risk/WL-year(O.021 fatal cancers/person-WL-y) was developed primarily from information on uranium miner exposures (6). This computer code and conversion factor were then applied to the assumed emission rate of radon-222 from each type of mine to develop estimates of working levels, lifetime risks and number of fatal cancers. A summary of this data is presented in table II. [ ] The highest estimated number of cancer deaths per year of operation is 0.05 cancer deaths or 1.0 death due to radon during the 24 year life of a phosphorous mine. For comparison, EPA estimates that underground uranium mines would cause .03 cancer deaths per year of operation in a regional population(1). [Field Study] As a followup to the theoretical study, EPA's Las Vegas laboratory began making measurements in 1978 of actual emissions of radon-222 and radioactive particulates from mine vents at several facilities for each of the industries listed in Table I and II. They were intended to verify general information and radon emissions from EPA's theoretical estimates.

The quantitative evaluation,of quartz and other minerals in acid-insoluble residues from carbonate rocks and other industrial mineral products derived from sedimentary and low-grade metamorphic rocks is difficult. Commonly there are a dozen or more minerals present, and the suites vary from sample to sample. Because of these factors, either the absorption coefficient must be determined on a sample to sample basis or an internal standard must be used. Internal standards in general use are unsatisfactory. For example, [A1203] is often present in product samples because of ceramic grinding elements used in their production; CaF and LiF have peaks which overlap or nearly overlap mineral peaks in the samples. A careful evaluation has shown that magnesium aluminate (synthetic spinel) works particularly well as an internal standard for these types of samples. Not only does it have few, strong diffraction peaks which do not overlap, the peaks are in the same 28 region as the minerals, usually quartz and silicates, for which quantification is desired. Spinel also consists of equidimensional particles without prominent cleavages; this promotes a random orientation of the minerals in X-ray diffraction mounts. In addition, spinel can be used to correct for loss of diffracted-beam intensity due to thin sample preparations which are often unavoidable.

In recent years drivage advance rates in the UK have in- creased from 35m per week in the 1980's to 100/150m per week possible today. These extended rates of advance have resulted in an increase in the potential methane, dust and heat generation at the drivage face. In order to disperse this additional pollutant load requires an increase of fresh air at the face. Although advance rates have changed, current auxiliary ventilation practice has not. UK mining law requires that the fresh air must be delivered to within 5m of the face. This has lead to the wide spread use of overlap auxiliary systems, since a pure forcing system set at this distance would lead to excessive airborne dust. UK mining law does not at present consider on-board mounted exhaust scrubber fans to constitute an effective overlap fan within mechanised drivages. In an attempt to determine whether working conditions could be safely and economically improved within mechanised drivages, a series of preliminary full scale gallery trials were con- ducted. A summary of the principal findings of these trials are presented together with an outline of a series of representative CFD simulations, scale model experiments.
