Thiohydrometallurgical systems including thiosulfate, thiocyanate and thiourea have been stud- ied as alternative liriviants for the leaching of gold. Research and development of thiohydrometallurgical technology has been prompted by environmental concerns with the use of cyanide and problems associated with the processing of difficult-to-treat ores. These thiosystems have some chemical similarities, enabling gold to be leached in a practical oxidizing environment. However, the solution chemistry of the thiosystems is complicated due to instability of the thioreagents and many other reactions which occur during the gold leaching reaction. In this paper, interference reactions of selected metal ions and sulfide minerals are examined in order to understand important aspects of solution chemistry which control the stability of the thioleaching reactions. Applications using thioreagents as lixiviants for oxide and refractory gold ores are presented.

This paper describes the impact of natural ventilation pressure (NVP) on the Nuclear Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico (WIPP). The WIPP site is a U.S. Department of Energy underground facility for the disposal of low level radioactive transuranic defense generated waste. Because the facility is designed for the storage of nuclear waste, special design considerations are necessary to ensure containment of potential radioactive releases. The main design considerations which influence the ventilation system are the requirements of separate air splits for mining and storage operations and of air filtering before atmospheric discharge in the event of a radioactive release. The leakage between the two air splits must always be from the mining area to the storage area. The transient effects of natural ventilation pressures, caused by seasonal and diurnal surface temperature changes, impact the ventilation characteristics throughout the facility. This paper discusses the measurements taken to quantify the changes in NVP and the engineered systems designed to mitigate against the effects of NVP.

Research has shown that excessive soil compaction is detrimental to the establishment of trees in reclaimed soils. Dry bulk density and penetration resistance are two soil parameters that can be used to indicate the level of compaction in reclaimed soils. It is believed that reclamation practices that minimize soil compaction will produce better results when forestland is the intended postmining use. The University of Kentucky has developed reforestation test cells on reclaimed soils at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky to test this hypothesis. Each test cell has been planted with various species of trees. Since 1997, data have been collected at these test cells for soil average dry bulk density, average penetration resistance, average depth to refusal and average survival rate of trees. These data have been correlated to determine the relationship between soil compaction and tree-survival rate. It is believed that these two soil-compaction parameters may ultimately be used to predict tree-survival rates on reclaimed surface mined lands.

This paper details the development of a functional work index that characterises the relationship between the energy that is imparted by a Roller Press into materials, against the resultant size reduction achieved. Such a Roller Press work index is necessary for this new grinding technology to differentiate it from Bond's grinding work index, and to clear up confusion that arises with such a comparison to Bond. The energy usage in a Roller Press does not follow Bond's "Third Theory of Comminution" but rather Rittinger's theory of new surface creation. The relationships for such a work index have been developed from the viewpoint of an equipment manufacturer with the hope that they will be of assistance to the minerals industry in the design of grinding circuits incorporating Roller Press comminution. The work index contains modification factors that reflects the effect of oversize, fines, moisture. closed-circuit operation and roll surface characteristics on the energy verses size reduction relationship. It has evolved from the results obtained from testing of a wide range of ore and mineral types that include bauxite, coal, kimberlite, limestone, iron and chrome ores, base metal and gold ores. The results show that even for such a diverse range of materials, they all demonstrate similarities of behaviour when comminuted in a Roller Press.

The chemical, oil, semiconductor, mining, and paper and pulp industries, as well as most other modern industries, are rapidly expanding the range of measurements used to characterize raw materials, process steps, intermediates, and final products. In addition, process variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow become more and more numerous, providing extra information on the state of the process. However, no matter how many sensors are added, the underlying sources of variations that drive the process behavior remain constant. On the other hand, the measuring frequency of these data has increased from once a day or once an hour to once, ten, or even hundred times a minute. This gives masses of data that are swelling in both directions (more variables and more observations). These data need to be properly stored, managed, and analyzed to provide diagnostics about the state of the process as well as an understanding of the relationships between different parts of the process and the product properties. Projection methods such as PCA (principal components analysis) and PLS (projection to latent structures) compress process data to informative summaries of the original variables. These can be shown on line, providing an efficient, graphically oriented suite of diagnostics regarding the "health" and performance of the process. The power of these methods is illustrated by two examples of industrial data in the mining industry.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. Ground water can pose major engineering and environmental problems to the new generation of large, deep gold mines currently being developed throughout the world. It is important that the potential magnitude of these problems be assessed early in the planning of such projects and that any necessary dewatering and environmental remediation programs be designed at least preliminarily in the feasibility stage. The assessment should begin with acquisition of hydrogeologic data during exploration drilling and be followed by carefully designed and analyzed aquifer tests. Once a sufficiently detailed conceptual hydrogeologic model has been defined, state-of-the-art numerical models should be used to estimate ground-water inflows to proposed pits and underground openings, to design and evaluate the potential effects of various dewatering schemes, to define specific environmental impacts, and to predict pore pressures in highwalls relative to slope stability. The modeling results will indicate which method(s) of dewatering will be most effective both technically and economically. If wells are used, it is imperative that they be as hydraulically efficient as possible. There are new methods of drilling and completing dewatering wells that can help assure maximum efficiency.

The Çayirhan coal basin is located 124 km (77 miles) west of Ankara,Turkey. With approximately 520 Mt (570 million st) of lignite reserves, the Neogene Çayirhan basin is one of the important coal districts of the central Anatolia region. The Çoraklar formation consists of crossbedded sandstone, channel fill conglomerates, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and volcanoclastic pebblestones, which are fluvial in origin. The lower and upper lignite seams occur, respectively, in the lower and the uppermost parts of the Çoraklar formation. The lignite deposits are in the Çayirhan and Koyunagili portions of the Beypazari Neogene basin. The Çayirhan coalfield consists of lower and upper lignite seams. The lower lignite seam does not outcrop at the surface. Its lateral discontinuity and relatively low sulfur content, plus sedimentologic and stratigraphic features of the associated sediments, indicate a fluvial origin. Thus, the lateral spreading and geometry of the lower lignite deposits were controlled by the channel, flood plain and well drained marshes of a fluvial system. The mining method employed at Çayirhan is the fullymechanized, retreat, working longwall with caving system. Due to ventilation, haulage and tectonic conditions, panel lengths from 0.6 to 1.7km (0.4 to 1.1 miles) are chosen, and 220-m (720ft) face lengths are used. The annual coal production is 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st).

INTRODUCTION In both the United States and Canada, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been promulgated by Federal and/or Provincial Legislatures. This paper focuses on the regulations pertaining to reserve reports required by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). SEC RESERVE FILINGS Reserve reports made to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission are the only reserve reports which are directly regulated by the United States government. The requirements for SEC reserve reports are set forth in the filing forms as shown in Appendix A, from Item 17A of SEC Form S-18. These reporting requirements, which are intended to protect the investing public from inaccurate or misleading claims, are primarily oriented to S-1 or other filings for new stock issues but must also be followed for annual 10K reports which must be filed annually by U.S. public corporations as part of the Corporate Annual Report. These undertakings require independent audits of reserves, mine designs, plant facilities and a general economic evaluation of the planned or existing operation as part of the backup documents for filing. An ore reserve is defined by the SEC as "That part of a mineral deposit which could be economically and legally extracted or produced at the time of the reserve determination". Generally, production planning is concerned with the best use of fixed resources to determine a production schedule for one or more production units supplying one or more markets. Production scheduling determines when each production unit will be used and its production level. However, the production scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of existing or new production units and processing facilities. Normally, mine location allows only a limited choice; processing plant types and locations are considerably more flexible. This paper presents a generalized multiperiod MIP model as an aid in determining the mine production schedule and the processing plant types and location to satisfy multiple markets. A brief description of MIP and how it has been applied in the mineral and other industries is discussed. A complete description of the model with an application to a coal preparation plant system is presented.

INTRODUCTION The need for substantial advances in underground excavation technology has produced considerable research activity on a wide variety of concepts under a variety of Government funded programs. One goal of this "Rapid Excavation" effort has been the development of a means to apply the well-known virtues, both technical and economic, of the drill and blast method in a continuous process. The spiral blast concept, aimed at this specific goal, has been funded for initial studies (1) by the ARPA Rapid Excavation Program and, for the experimental work reported herein, by the Department of Transportation (2). The economy enjoyed by the drill and blast method stems from two factors: explosive energy is relatively cheap; and this energy is released so as to cause rock fragmentation largely through tensile failures. The relative ease and efficiency of tensile rock failures have long been recognized. The drill and blast process of course cannot be truly continuous since drilling and blasting (and other necessary functions) simply are separate, distinct operations. Although some surface explosive work has been done to avoid the need for drilled blast holes (3) it does appear that the high performance associated with explosive excavation requires placement of the explosive beneath the rock surface. This paper describes studies of blasting pattern which, in simplest terms, replaces the occasional heavy blast of conventional practice with frequent, much smaller blasts. A new method developed for the estimation of the activity of Ht in mixed sulfate solutions is described and examples of application of this method to the system H2SO4-ZnSO4-FeSO4-Fe2(SO4)3 from 298 to 473 K are offered. The method makes use of an "extended Debye-Hiickel" type of equation that was originally put forth by Das for pure H2SO4 solutions at ambient temperature. The treatment of mixed sulfate solutions was made possible by combining that equation of Das with a speciation algorithm which calculates the abundance of all species formed. The developed method, which also takes into account ionic strength and temperature effects, was used to generate hydrogen ion activity and speciation data for all possible acid/metal sulfate pairs of the system H2SO4-ZnSO4-FeSO4-Fe2(SO4)3. Finally, under the light of the reported data, specific examples of hydrometallurgical reaction systems are analyzed in terms of thermodynamics or kinetics. In particular, the systems discussed are: hydrometallurgical precipitation of hematite, solvent extraction of Fe(III), acid leaching of zinc ferrite, and oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) by O2(aq).

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which enables completely new designs of conventional shell and tube configurations. This article explains the principle and application of this self-cleaning heat exchange technology and also pays attention to an actual case of a revamp of the severely fouling exchangers of a conventional multi-effect evaporator into a self-cleaning configuration. Possibilities for the revamp of conventional exchangers suffering from massive and very hard scale deposits are found in a variety of metallurgical processes, such as: The refining of nickel, the production of alumina from bauxite and many others.

Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is an independent, state of Florida research agency. It was created in 1978 to conduct research to enhance the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. The institute also conducts research to prevent, minimize or rectify environmental impacts caused by the industry. And it helps educate the public concerning phosphate-related technology and issues. FIPR is funded by a severance tax on the industry and is governed by a five-member board of directors appointed by the governor. FIPR&apos;s research is playing a role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. Its technology research program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. It is developing new and improved methods of beneficiation and fertilizer production. This includes new process flowsheets and on-line analyzers and process control methods. FIPR is also developing uses for the phosphogypsum byproduct of phosphoric acid production and evaluating the risks associated with its uses.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. The project development is reviewed from original testwork through circuit design, operating experience, and subsequent expansion.
