This paper describes the basics of regulatory control implementation including some practical guidelines for instrumentation installation, operator interface design, loop tuning, and continuous loop performance analysis. Tuning and analysis techniques are illustrated by step-by-step industrial examples. A small investment in basic control pays dividends in better overall plant performance and provides a solid foundation for advanced control efforts such as expert systems.

Diagnostic leaching tests provide a good indication of gold deportation in its various occurrence phases. With the results of these tests, possible flowsheets for difficult ore treatment can be established for further evaluation and plant operation can be optimized. The use of this technique can be extended, including heap leach evaluation and complex copper-gold ores. The results on the use of diagnostic leaching tests in gold ores from Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) are presented and discussed, as well as the methodology to select steps and interpret results used at CVRD Technology Center (Sutec).

Despite the severe drought conditions that reduced farm requirements for industrial mineral products, most industrial minerals markets in 1988 continued their growth or, at worst, remained flat. Earlier projections of output declines did not materialize in most segments. Preliminary estimates of demand in Europe and Asia show strong growth for most industrial minerals. Profitability in industrial minerals in North America was best in those minerals that had a significant export market or were not strongly regional. Growth and price trends in the more regional industrial minerals markets in the US such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, and cement, more closely followed the broadly disparate regional economic conditions. For example, sand and gravel and crushed stone grew strongly in the Pacific Coast and northeastern markets but not as much as in the Southeast. Total growth for sand and gravel in 1988 is projected at about 3% above 1987 levels. Combined production is up about 27 Mt (30 million st) to 2 Gt (2.2 billion st). Following the relentless trend of foreign acquisition of US cement companies (currently about two-thirds are owned by foreign interests), several aggregate operations have been purchased by foreign companies. Notable among these in 1988 was the acquisition of Rinker Materials Corp. by CSR of Australia. The acquisition of this Florida-based aggregate and concrete operation will expand the current holdings of CSR in the southeastern US, with operations consolidated under the Rinker logo. In addition, Pike Industries of New England and J.L. Shiely Co. of Minnesota were significant aggregate producers that were acquired by foreign firms. New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon Products, was acquired by a subsidiary of Cementes del Norte of Spain. Dravo continued to expand its influence in the lime and limestone markets. It became the major supplier of construction aggregates on the inland river system with its purchase of Cyprus Minerals' limestone aggregate operations in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. Although lime production continued to grow from 14 to 15 Mt (15.7 to 16.7 million st) in 1988, lime imports decreased for the fifth consecutive year to 145 kt (160,000 st). In the more export-oriented industrial minerals markets, performance was generally very good for 1988. Soda ash enjoyed an excellent year, with its price up to $102.50/t ($93 per st). This reflected the tight market situation for soda ash, particularly in late 1988. Soda ash production in 1988 was 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st), reflecting the industry's improved efficiency. Particularly significant was the increase in caustic soda prices that led to increased substitution by soda ash. The export market remained at 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st). Phosphate production recovered to the 42 Mt (46 million st) level, a 12% increase despite a soft export market. The price, however, remained soft throughout the year. W.R. Grace sold its interest in its Florida phosphate mine and its phosphoric acid complex as part of its divestiture of the agrichemicals business. The strengthening of the major producers has continued as lower cost capacity has been idled. Future permitting of phosphoric acid facilities and development of reserves will be necessary to maintain current production levels beyond the mid- to late 1990s. Despite new developments worldwide in the titanium minerals market, strong demand has continued to apply pressure to price, with concentrate and slag prices going up. The demand for high quality slag as feedstock for pigment production has resulted in process improvements in South Africa (Richard's Bay) and in plans by Canada to import high quality ilmenite by 1991 to produce a 90% TiO2 slag. Although growth in industrial silica sand applications was small in 1988, concentration in the industry continued. Unimin continued to acquire silica operations. Unimin is now the nation's leading producer of granular silica. The end users of silica have consolidated further. Owens-Illinois purchased Brockway Inc., a leading container glass producer. Three companies now control 75% of the container glass industry. ECC continued to be an aggressive purchaser of industrial minerals operations throughout the world. It acquired Cyprus Minerals' calcium carbonate business as well as two operations in Italy. In addition, ECC continued its aggressive acquisition of kaolin (Australia) and aggregate producers. 1988 was a good year for industrial minerals markets worldwide. More importantly, though, it was a year that showed continuing consolidations of reserve ownership in the industry around the world. Barite AN. Castelli, Baroid Drilling Fluids Inc. US mine production of barite decreased 9.4% during 1988. Consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 37.9%. Imports are estimated to have increased by 21.2%. World mine production decreased by 9.8%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 4.6%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported ground barite during the first 10 months of 1988 increased from $37.16/t ($33.71 per st) in 1987 to $37.92/t ($34.40 per st), according to Bureau figures. Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 72% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 69% of US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The other 31% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. Integration and synthesis of mine-site topography, geophysical, and geochemical data yields both two- dimensional and three-Amensional perspective models for the May Day mine located in the Cement Creek drainage near Silverton, Colorado. Induced polarization, geophysical data are spatially registered with geochemical data acquired from drill hole cuttings that are contoured m three-dimensional space, thereby permitting determination of the most metalliferous and sulfur rich zones of a waste pile. This spatial modeling application was developed to be a visually intuitive tool to aid in mine waste reclamation.

This paper describes the application of the Graphics Assisted Under Ground Engineering (GAUGE) software to a 2-layered room and pillar hard rock mine. The graphics- assisted mine modeling and mine planning capabilities of GAUGE are demonstrated. The system uses polygons to model the room and pillar mine design and displays the model in plan view on the graphics screen,. The planning engineer interactively specifies areas to be mined in the medium or long term. The system calculates and accumulates tonnages and grades for the user-specified areas based on the layer being mined and the particular unit operation (drifting, widening or benching).

Short-hole horizontal degasification systems have been utilized in Island Creek's Virginia Division mines since 1986. These systems remove methane from the coal seam in advance of longwall mining. Without an in-seam methane drainage program, methane liberation rates from the longwall faces may exceed 0.47 cu m/s (1,000 cfrn), requiring 47 cu m/s (100,000 cfm) of air for adequate dilution capability. Optimization of the degas systems has enabled methane liberation levels and the associated ventilation requirements on the longwall faces to be reduced by 50 to 80 percent. Since the inception of the first degas system at the Virginia Pocahontas No. 6 Mine, Island Creek has developed an overall methane drainage program designed to maximize gas production and minimize ventilation requirements for methane dilution. Gas production from the degas systems is affected by four main design criteria: (1) hole location, (2) hole length and spacing, (3) collection system capacity, and (4) time available for drainage. Drilling equipment and materials for the gas collection system are selected to meet the necessary criteria while minimizing manpower requirements. Benefits gained from reducing methane liberation rates from the longwall faces are fourfold: (1) improved safety due to lower methane concentrations in the face area, (2) fewer production delays caused by excessive methane concentrations, (3) lower fan operating costs resulting from reduced air requirements, and (4) enhanced worker comfort resulting from lower air velocities and less dust generation.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has developed a data acquisition system to continuously monitor radon, working level, absolute pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. Data have been taken in intake and exhaust drifts, working stopes, and sealed-off areas of positive and negative ventilated uranium mines. Radon emanation rates, ranging from 1.7- to 12.2 x 2 10-l4 Ci/cm /sec were determined in four mines. The ratios of short duration, primary fan shutdown time to radon normalization time were 1 to 2 and 1 to 4, respectively, for-negatively and positively ventilated mines. Blasting and slushing caused radon increases of 160 and 67 percent, respectively.

Some basic terms used in cost management and accounting include: - Cost. A sacrifice made to acquire goods or services, measured by the price paid. Technically, the sacrifice is called a cost until the benefits from the goods or services have expired, at which time the sacrifice is called an expense. In this text, the terms "cost" and "expense" are used interchangeably. - Revenue. An increase in the value of the firm resulting from the sales of goods and services. - Income. The excess of revenues over costs for a specified period. The term is often used with modifiers to indicate specific quantities on an income statement (e.g., pretax income; net income). - Activity. A measure of production work. Traditionally, physical production volume (tons of ore or units of product) has been used as the measure of activity. Other measures include direct labor hours, equipment operating hours, and quantity of materials or supplies consumed. - Responsibility center. A segment of an organization that is responsible for a specified set of activities. In mining, individual operating divisions can be treated as responsibility centers, known as profit or cost centers. Departments within a division are generally treated as cost centers. - Cost center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of cost. - Profit center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of profit (revenues and costs).

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed an inflatable feed-tube seal (IFTS) for high-expansion foam generators. The IFTS is a lightweight, portable, rectangular inflatable bag that can be used by firefighters to rapidly seal large openings, such as those in underground mines, and to simultaneously provide a feed-tube for a high-expansion foam generator. Thus allows fire fighting foam to freely flow to the fire site and control or extinguish the fire. Studies indicated that a high-expansion foam plug will travel 183 m (600 ft) down an entry with a 4.5% rise in elevation, before leakage of foam from around the inflatable partition.

This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

The minerals barite (BaSO, -barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO, -barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds, whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modem industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry, which in 1990 consumed about 90% of the world's production of 4.9 Mt as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid called mud that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite is found throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity-filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase because of the world's need for oil and gas. Geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite, desirable as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals, is much less common and abundant than barite.

This paper describes the development of the underground mining methods employed for narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were the chief underground mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The cut-and-fill methods and the benching methods are briefly reviewed in the paper. The benching methods and technologies have been continually evolving and one of the recent achievements is a multi-lift benching method. The multi-lift benching method is described in detail.

"The future of mining will be characterized not only by the application of modern technology, but also by the harmonization of economic, environmental and social issues. These areas set major future challenges which are complex and demand extensive knowledge. As an example, mining of highly complex orebodies for the supply of often critical raw materials, needs to consider technically demanding and cost-intensive extraction issues. The amount of tailings, which need to be stored, increases with the amount of ore mined. Therefore, the negative impact on environment and society increases. Hence mining becomes expensive with regard to all three aspects: economy, environment and society. In view of a sustainable mining practice this challenge should be used as an opportunity. The positive impact should be maximized for present and future generations. The objective is to create and use the mining openings in an optimum way related to sustainability. The approach of Blue Mining, which focuses on energy and ergonomics in the field of Sustainable Development, enhances the closure planning by recommending subsequent usage of such openings for energy storage. The approach fosters among others the implementation of the 7th Goal for Sustainable Development defined by the United Nations with the assurance of access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The usage of underground storage increases the stability of solar and water power usage, which are otherwise unreliable. Blue Mining embeds these issues in the main planning effort long before groundbreaking. This approach involves experience from past and current projects. This paper introduces the concept of Blue Mining with respect to post-mining utilization of a mine for energy storage. Methods and perspectives are presented with examples covering best-practices and lessons-learned."

In April 2012, work started on one of the most ambitious construction projects of Austria?s ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG ? the New Semmering Base Tunnel. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the 27.3 km (17 mile) tunnel through the Semmering range will cut the journey time on the south railway connecting Lower Austria and Styria. Before con-struction can begin at the entrance portal and tunnel bores, the work concentrates on the above ground sections with the clearance and excavation of the entrance ramp site. The slope is currently being excavated by the Baubeteiligungsge-sellschaft m.b.H. BBG-GRAZ. The cut face is shored up with shotcrete and permanent self-drilling anchors produced by Minova MAI, an economical bolting solution for softer rock formations. After completing the surface construction work, the twin-bore, single-track tunnel will be cut through the Semmering by conventional and continuous excavation beginning in 2015. Once completed, the New Semmering Base Tunnel will be one of the longest rail tunnels in Austria. It will act as a vital link on the route crossing Europe?s heartland from Northern Germany to Italy, which currently has to climb the steep Semmering pass between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag on a historic mountain railway recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The old route imposes considerable limitations on heavy freight trans-port, and passenger trains have to slow down to a speed of around 50 kph (31 mph). The New Semmering Base Tunnel will bypass this bottleneck and cut 30 minutes off the journey time between Vienna and Graz. It represents a particular advantage for freight traffic, since the new route?s minimal incline of 8.4 percent removes all obstacles for even heavy freight trains.

In any filtration, it is primarily the filter medium (cloth) and cake filtering properties that control the type of filtration equipment used and filtration conditions. The advent of new types of filter cloths, such as the membrane cloth discussed in this paper, can result in significant changes in filtration techniques and areas of application for filtration. For many suspensions, for instance, conventional filtration is uneconomic compared to gravity separation or not filtering at all (as with product recovery from dilute streams) because the solids are very fine, are hard to retain and build up filter pressure rapidly, and once retained are hard to remove. As a result of the developments discussed here, this is no longer the case. This technique and the use of the membrane filter cloth is well established. This filtration is currently being used for white liquor filtration in twenty-four mills worldwide in the chemical recovery step of the kraft process for producing paper pulp where it is replacing gravity thickeners in new plants. Filters up to 1000 sq. ft. (100 sq. meters) are filtering large volumes of solids from hot caustic solutions. The filtration materials and techniques discussed in this paper open the way to new methods and applications for filtration in the mining industry. It is not the intention of this paper to give a vigorous analysis of the different separations, but to outline some of the ways in which this filtration technique might be used in the mining industry.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." The Upper Diamond Fork Project, as part of the Central Utah Project Completion Act, conveys water six miles from the existing Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Diamond Fork Pipeline. During design, a Value Engineering team proposed a single-tunnel alignment that would be less destructive on the environment and might have a lower life cycle cost than the proposed design of two tunnels connected by two pipelines on steep hillsides. A decision was made to include this option in the bid process as a design-build alternative. The bid for this option was the lowest and a contract was awarded. During the TBM excavation a segment of tunnel wall caved in containing large quantities of water saturated with extremely high levels of hydrogen sul?de (H2S)gas (measured at 380 to 520 ppm in the air). The Central Utah Water Conservancy District (District) in consultation with Obayashi/Clyde (Contractor) quickly developed anew plan to finish the system by incorporating parts of the original tunnel/pipeline concept and re-bid the remainder of the project as a Phase 2 Design-Build contract.
