Up until the past couple of years, thermal coal dryers were only used to dry midwest and eastern United States bituminous coals. These dryers were primarily installed at coal preparation plants to freeze proof the coal and lower the transportation costs per BTU. Today thermal coal dryers are being specified to dry western sub-bituminous and lignite coals for these and other reasons brought about by the intense interest in coal gasification and liquefaction. One reason for drying western coals ahead of a coal gasification plant is the elimination of surface moisture which would prevent efficient sizing of the coal, since feed material size consist is very important in most commercial coal gasification processes. Thermal dryers are being proposed for liquefaction processes because of the need for a feed material containing approximately 4% or less total moisture Future coal gasification processes may also need to reduce feed material moisture content.

The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar» filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product. Lab and pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70\ -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20\ are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press. Currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 Series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50\ to achieve these results.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.

A synthetic fiber manufactured by one chemical company has been treated by another chemical company to produce a cloth fabric capable of performing ion-exchange functions. Only a few delimiting parameters have been established. This paper will discuss briefly the highlights of a functioning ion-exchange cloth. Throughout the paper this fabric will be referred to as "Fabric Z".

Understanding ore variability is a key factor in the geometallurgical analysis of a deposit and is beneficial to process development and mine planning. Ore variability is a function of the mineralogy of a deposit, in terms of both ore and gangue minerals and their textural relationships. This study integrates optical microscopy and quantitative mineral analysis to characterize the mineralogy and texture from 13 samples from different lithologic units at the Bingham Canyon Mine. The analysis identified several parameters, such as modal mineralogy, alteration assemblages, distribution of mineral phases and alteration assemblages and microfracture and void space distribution. These parameters can have an impact on the materials’ behavior during processing. This study demonstrates that quantitative mineralogical analysis can provide detailed information for improved understanding of ore variability.

Hydrodynamic investigations in exploratory boreholes and grouting holes are conducted for the purpose of obtain¬ing information about the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic section to be intersected by the proposed underground workings. The information obtained from the investigations provides the basis for calculating the hydrau¬lic coefficients of fractured permeable rock, the dimensions of the anticipated grout isolation curtain(s) around the un¬derground workings, the number and location of grouting holes, the injection pressure modes, and also the volume(s) of grout that will be required (Anon., 1976, 1978). The following data on each aquifer are obtained from the investigations conducted in monitoring and grouting bore¬holes and the analysis of the results: 1) the top of each hydrostratigraphic unit, 2) the thickness of each unit, 3) the ground water fluid potential distribution in each unit, 4) the coefficient of permeability, 5) the piezoconductivity, 6) the fracture porosity, 7) the geometry of the fractures in the rock, 8) the elasticity-compressibility coefficient of the fractured rock, 9) the chemical composition of the ground water, 10) the direction of flow of the ground water, and 11) the expected inflow rate of water into the shaft, drift or tunnel. STG uses its DAU-3M type flowmeter to conduct in¬vestigations of directions of flow in vertical, inclined and horizontal drillholes. The DAU-6 instrument is used to de¬termine the direction of flow of ground water in each frac¬ture or fractured aquifer. Various singular and double DAU type packers are used for pumping and for injection studies (tests) and for flowmeter investigations. Normally the instruments enumerated above permit in¬vestigations to be conducted in each separate aquifer with¬out reinforcing the holes with casings. On the basis of these investigative data, both the hydraulic properties of unfractured rock and the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock are estimated. Dual porosity rocks require special attention because they tend to segregate the grout. 3.1 FLOWMETER INVESTIGATIONS IN BOREHOLES The STG flowmetric methodology is based on the mea¬surement of the ground water flow rate through the borehole by hydrostratigraphic interval after the disturbance of the hydrostatic equilibrium in the "hole-aquifer system" (after pumping or injecting). The relationship of the head changes to the discharge into or from a particular hydrostratigraphic unit obtained during the tests serve as the basis for calcu¬lating the hydraulic properties. Flowmetric investigations facilitate the determination of the number of aquifers, their depths, their thickness, the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock and the magnitude and direction of the flow of ground water. 3.1.1 FLOWMETER HARDWARE STG conducts flowmetric investigations in boreholes using its DAU-3M-108, DAU-3M-73, DAU-3M-57 and DAU-3M-44 instruments.' They have respective external diameters of 108, 73, 57 and 44 mm. The type of flowmeter selected for use depends on the borehole geometry and the technological scheme for carrying out the investigations. Boreholes with a drilling diameter of 76-93 mm are inves¬tigated with the DAU-3M-73 flowmeter; boreholes drilled by bits with a diameter of 112 mm and more are investi¬gated using the DAU-3M-108 flowmeter. The DAU-3M¬108 and DAU-3M-57 instruments are used for flowmetric investigations with a packer. 3.1.1.1 The Downhole Sensor The sensor design of the DAU-3M-73 hole flowmeter is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the DAU-3M-108 instru¬ment is similar to the design of the DAU-3M-73 instrument. The frame of the flowmeter sensor shown in Fig. 2 consists of a casing, an upper and lower centering mount and two rings to which the guiding rods are attached. The upper rods are built into the connector bushing; the lower rods are built into the coupling sleeve. The borehole cable is attached using a half-coupling, a packing ring and a constriction nut. Thus, the frame of the flowmeter sensor is made so that the free passage of water to the impeller is facilitated along with the necessary rigidity. The primary moving component of the flowmeter is the double-bladed impeller, which rotates on cobalt-tungsten pivots and agate thrust bearings. Special extended air cham¬bers protect the supports of the impeller from the action of the borehole fluid which may contain fibrous and abrasive particles. The air located in the chambers shields the sup¬ports from direct contact with the borehole fluid when the sensor operates in a borehole. Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera project started in June 1995. Concentrate production began early in the third quarter of 1997. The project is situated in northwestern Argentina. Alumbrera is being developed by Minera Alumbrera, which is owned by MIM Holdings of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom of Canada (25%). Alumbrera is Argentina's first modern copper mine. This article outlines the key process- and plant-layout features that were incorporated in the Alumbrera concentrator design. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity-gold circuits in both the primary and the regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

Modelling of industrial sulphide flotation based on data collected in several flotation plants is discussed. A mechanistic approach is used in which it is recognised that flotation is a two stage process with concentration occurring both in the pulp and in the froth. The important features of the model, which is a kinetic model, are – 1. for each particle species there is a range of flotation rates which corresponds to the range of particle sizes, 2. the flotation rates of the liberated gangue particles which have no hydrophobic properties are dependent on the flotation rate of water and are controlled by variables such as the air and frother addition rates, and the pulp level, 3. as an approximation the valuable sulphide particles may be regarded as being present in two groups with high and low flotation rate constants, 4. increase in the addition rate of collector tends to increase the proportion of sulphide particles which are in the high flotation rate constant group. The actual flotation rate of each group of particles is a combination of an "inherent" flotation rate and a flotation rate which is dependent on the flotation rate of water, at particular air and frother addition rates and pulp levels there is a physical limit to the rate at which particles can be transported into the concentrate and this is recognised in the

"Tantalum, a heavy metal with characteristics such as superconductivity and high terminal resistance, nowadays is the most efficient material for production of capacitors, which are essential for production of small electronic applications like notebooks and cell-phones. It is one of the strategic resources for information societies. With supply extracted from Central Africa (Congo / DRC), China, Australia, and Canada, it can serve as an example for sustainability efforts in the management of non-renewable resources in Developing Countries, Newly Industrializing Countries and Industrialized Countries alike. The paper analyzes the life cycle of tantalum in its environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The first section highlights the importance of tantalum, showing a demand-driven market. The second section analyzes current and future supply. The third section tackles environmental and social impacts of tantalum mining in different legislations. The fourth section especially deals with the Case of the Democratic Republic of Congo since companies have been accused of participating in a civil ‘resource war’. Section five will draw conclusions for sustainable resource management. Written in an interdisciplinary manner, the article has a bearing on economics, especially on resource economics and new institutional economics, as well as on geography. It deals with questions such as security implications of physical scarcity in rapidly growing markets. In doing so it can, firstly, be shown that information exchange in combination with reputational risks lead to a shift in extraction activities from a Developing Country (DRC) to an Industrialized Country (Australia); i.e. a ‘race to the bottom’ does not take place. This, however, does not mean that market mechanisms work properly since information exchange (especially with China) is incomplete, moral hazard still prevails, and inadequate institutions hamper development processes in an exporting country like Congo. Any sustainable resource management for tantalum not only should foster gathering and exchanging better information on environmental and social impacts, but also incentives for upstream metal recycling in industry as well as support for governance processes in Developing Countries"

This is a description of the efforts of a research project intended to demonstrate methods of alleviating pollution from coal mine refuse piles and slurry lagoons. These are mainly derelict barren sites. Some are burning and some are vulnerable to wind erosion which causes air pollution. Some occupy valuable land near metropolitan areas. They are an integral part of the landscape of the Appalachian and Midwestern Coal Fields. They are important in the light of growing civic awareness of the great general problem of waste disposal and environmental improvement. In the V-shaped valleys of the Pocahontas Region, they continue to be piled higher and higher. In flatter topography, they tend to form broad, flat ridges. Some contain more metal forms than others and some have a minimum of metal, but weather to a fine talc, which chokes streams with a fine particle suspension. Most are burning or have burned, but burning or weathering, most all are sources of pollution to the atmosphere and to adjacent waterways. This demonstration project is being carried out at an abandoned mine near the town of Du Quoin in southern Illinois. It is jointly sponsored by the Truax-Traer Division of Consolidation Coal Company and by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration of the Department of the Interior. The site area is a refuse pile and slurry lagoon, each of fifty acres. It is hoped that basic data from this study will be generally applicable to other sites and will provide a basis for rational and efficient engineering design of future reclamation projects. Most refuse piles have extremely long term capabilities to produce highly potent acidogenic oxidation products typifying the more serious aspects of acid mine drainage contamination. Numerous sites remain where the abandoned mine no longer discharges acid waters, but its associated refuse pile continues to generate significant quantities of acid and other oxidation products even after many years.

The WTBAL computer program for evaluating material balances for minerals processing flowsheets was developed at the MRC and has been in general use for a number of years. This paper reports on two enhancements to the basic MTBAL routine. The original program accounted for errors in the process measurements and used estimates of measurement variability to calculate stream weights. Unfortunately, the estimate of measurement variability was fixed over all streams. In the enhanced version of MATBAL, named IMTBL, the program equations and their solution procedure have been modified to allow the estimated variability in a process measurement to vary from stream to stream. The .second enhancement involves making MTBAL interactive. As such, the user now prescribes his information in an easy-to-use fashion in a conversational mode via a terminal. Finally, an assessment of the feasibility of implementing IMTBL on microcomputer systems will also be reported.

This paper mainly presents geotechnical aspects of a vehicular underpass that was built across under one of the busiest highway in Hong Kong. The underpass, in a section comprising an upper arch and invert slab, is approximately 6.2 m high at crown and 15 m wide at the base level with 40 m in length. The construction inevitably requires the underpass to be built using tunneling techniques to keep the overheadroad traffic uninterrupted. The paper will describe the design of temporary support for the tunnel excavation that was provided by an arch formed with horizontal pipes, which were installed using the pipe ramming method. The pipes arch was then supported by steel ribs founded on rock or mass concrete. Permanent lining design consideration was also discussed. Results of numerical modeling of the soil-structure interaction using the 2-D computer code FLAC will be presented. The predictions have been compared to the monitored results during construction, which indicates the prediction is in reasonable agreement with the measurement in the light of ground movement. The construction challenges will also be discussed in the paper.

When John F. Kennedy made this statement, I am sure he was not thinking about the valuation of limestone reserves. However, it is certainly applicable. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the discomfort of thought (i.e., the analytical and methodical process performed by a reputable professional) builds the foundation for an opinion that provides assurance as to the value of a property. In its final form, a valuation is nothing more than an opinion. The credence of that opinion is directly proportional to the knowledge of the appraiser and the efforts and judgment extended in developing said opinion. Presented herein are the methodologies for formulating a defensible opinion. Before detailing the valuation process, an overview of the limestone industry is presented along with some historical parameters relating to the industry. Secondly, the most widely used valuation methodologies and a brief discussion of each are presented. Two case studies are then presented, which review actual valuation studies. The paper concludes with how the valuation process should be published in a report format that is defensible from a legal standpoint, bankable from a financial standpoint, and decipherable from a layman's standpoint.

5.1 INTRODUCTION Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for exploitation of low-grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successfu1, ore must exhibit certain characteristics, as previously discussed in Chapter 1. Primary among the necessary ore characteristics is that the ore must have good permeability after being crushed or treated and stacked into heaps if uniform distribution of the cyanide leach solution is to be achieved. Gold and silver ores containing excessive amounts of clays or fines generated by crushing are some of the most difficult to treat successfully by heap leaching. The presence of excessive amounts of slimes (generally classified as minus 50-micron or 270 Tyler mesh sieve size particles) in the heap leach feed will slow the percolation flow of the leach solution, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap, causing the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than to penetrate the ore heap. The problem of heap leaching ores containing fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the ore heaps, because natural sorting of coarse and fine material occurs during these steps (Johanson, 1978). This phenomenon results in a concentration of ore fines at the center of individual ore piles and a concomitant concentration of larger rock fragments on the lower slopes and base of the piles. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off prior to installation of the sprinkling system which delivers the leach solution, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. The segregation results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. As a consequence, the leach solutions follow the path of least resistance, percolating downward through the coarse ore regions and bypassing or barely wetting areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective utilization of marginal gold and silver resources through heap leach processing requires the development of new methods in order to achieve more uniform size distribution during ore heap preparation and better slime control during leaching.

The Chuquicamata mining and metallurgical complex is the main division of CODELCO-CHILE. Its comparative advantage in the world of primary copper producers had deteriorated severely and, consequently, its top management launched an extensive modernization plan. This paper shows how Chuquicamata recovered its position as a low-cost copper producer and is now well positioned to face the end of this century, as far as competitiveness is concerned. It also shows the company's vision for the )(XI century. Given the volume of its ore reserves, one possibility is expanding the sulfide production line capacity, while in the case of the oxide production line, ore reserves are limited so that there is a need to maximize the effectiveness of both organization and technology use. A final consideration has to do with the balance of supply and demand. Most observers of the copper market agree that supply is growing faster than demand. On the other hand, copper is facing severe environmental problems, especially in the piping business, plus the usual threat of substitution. Nevertheless, copper producers are making very weak efforts to defend the market and increase copper consumption through the promotion of new uses of the metal. This issue is crucial and must be considered if copper producers want to maintain a profitable market.

Introduction Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies under the influence of an electric field. Electrostatic separation is effected by adjusting those forces acting on particles due to the electric field as well as co-acting forces such as gravity or centrifugal forces so that the different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Electrostatic separations can be broadly defined as being either electrophoretic or dielectrophoretic. Electrophoresis is the separation of charged particles in an electric field, whereas dielectrophoresis is the separation of neutral particles in an electric field1. Examples of an electrophoretic separation can be found with sepa¬rations that use corona charging (ion bombardment), contact charging (triboelectric) and conductive induction. Dielectrophoresis motions are due to the stress and repositioning of charges, i.e. polarization of a neutral particle when exposed to a non-uniform electric field. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high-tension, electrodynamic or ion bombardment separations. These are the most prevalent in use today in mineral processing. Dielectrophoretic separation of most minerals is based on differences in dielectric constants of the solid species and usually requires the use of expensive intermediate dielectric fluids. Dielectrophoresis has not been employed for industrial mineral separations, though its effects pose interesting possibilities1, and pilot-plant units developed by the U.S.B.M. are available for testing2. Our discussion will be limited to the three forms of electrophoresis found in commercial practice. Typical Industrial Separations Typical industrial applications of electrostatic separation are: 1. Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. The directions for ventilation control are often given in linguistic styles such as "if the airflow rate measured is small, a high value of rotation on a local fan should be chosen." In order to control the underground climate using a computer instead of a human being, both the reliability of data values measured underground and the application of human recognition of data values are required. The efficiency of data transmission is dependent on a method of checking a signal which is changed by mixing noises resulting from cases of electrical and mechanical damage to cables. In the study, fuzzy reasoning is adopted to choose a checking method for underground conditions from a normally operating state to an emergency. Fuzzy reasoning is applied to control airflow rate under the linguistic control rules given. It is shown that an effective series of linguistic control rules derived by fuzzy-sets theory is available in ventilation control when used in conjunction with an air velocity sensor, a computer and a local fan with thyristor control. Moreover, a system to make an optimum series of linguistic control rules for ventilation control is introduced.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The repository is located at a depth of 655 m in the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation, 40 km east of Carlsbad, NM. A key component in the design of the WIPP repository is the installation of concrete structures as panel seals in the intake and exhaust drifts after a panel has been filled with waste containers. The DOE has proposed several panel closure design modifications to the EPA. EPA approval of the changes is required since the details of the designs are specified in EPA’s final rule as a condition for WIPP certification. The Environmental Evaluation Group, in its role of providing technical oversight on the WIPP project, has evaluated the proposed modifications. An analysis of this evaluation is discussed.

Off-highway truck purchasers know the amount of tonnes, pounds, kilograms, etc, a truck will carry. However just because a truck is rated at 240 tons may in no way correlate to what that truck will actually carry. Two numbers define the carrying capacity of an off-highway truck: 1. The weight carrying capacity of the truck; 2. The volume carrying capacity of the truck. These two numbers must be in sync or the amount of payload carried will vary from the carrying capacity of the truck. Currently the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard J1363 January 1985 defines the volumetric carrying capacity of an off-highway truck. However as is well known in several South American countries, the SAE standard overrates the truck’s effective volumetric carrying capacity 15% to 20%. This paper presents a method for measuring “effective” body volumetric carrying capacity, resulting in a truck body for carrying the targeted load, matched to the loading equipment that interacts positively with the truck chassis.
