An extensive drilling and laboratory testing program indicates that diagenetic dolomitization of the Oligocene Sombrerito Fm. limestone, southwestern Dominican Republic, is detrimental to the usefulness and quality of the potential construction aggregate resource. The first part of this program was the collection, photographing, and geologic logging of diamond drill cores to allow lithologic subdivision of the strata into potential quarry layers. The primary lithostratigraphic units are: I (youngest) approximately 10 m of white, dense marine limestone; II, approximately 5 m of white, interbedded dense and chalky marine limestone; III, 2+ m of tan, chalky calcitic dolomite. Unit I has been often altered by lateritic weathering and/or dolomitization; Unit II is often altered by dolomitization. The quarry layers were individually crushed, by core, into coarse aggregate sizes for chemical and physical (specific gravity absorption, MgSO4 soundness, sand equivalent, and LA degradation) analyses. The non-weathered units decrease in coarse-aggregate yield and quality with depth and dolomitization. Dolomitization typically causes about 5% lower yield of coarse aggregate, a sand equivalent of about 20 units below the original value, an increase in absorption of about 3%, an increase in the LA of up to 13%, and a decrease in the average 5-cycle MgSO4 soundness by about 17%.

Auriferous sulfide ores often contain very finely disseminated gold and other precious metal particles inside the sulfide crystals. The encapsulation of precious metal particles gives rise to the refractory nature of such ores to current extraction methods. As a result, these fractions are frequently lost in the tailings. The purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of pretreating these refractory tailings with bioleaching before employing standard extraction techniques such as cyanidation. Leadville gold ore tailings containing auriferous pyrite were first concentrated by froth flotation. The pyrite concentrate was treated for different periods of time with 12 weeks adapted thiobacillus ferrooxidans before cyanide leaching. The bioleaching of the concentrate before cyanide leaching increased the gold extraction from 32% to 95% and that of silver from 48% to more than 98%.

The Georgia kaolin District is the world's largest producer of kaolin. Georgia production tripled from 2,344 million metric tons in 1964 to 7,570 million metric tons in 1994. Development of the Georgia kaolin industry can be traced to the mineral resource, the adoption of innovative process technologies, and the market growth for kaolin. Georgia kaolin is an abundant and high-quality resource that shows a range of advantageous properties. Technical developments in wet processing, delamination, and calcination allowed production of high-value products. The application of kaolin pigments to the paper industry provided a market that could absorb rapid growth.

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained for the design and development of mine water control systems. Geologic, hydrologic, geophysical, biological, and chemical data must be gathered for use during all stages of mine development. Models allow the geohydrologist to use these data to predict the amount of ground-water inflow, the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, equipment needs, and dewatering schedules. Stratigraphic and lithologic changes, faults, recharge and discharge areas, and aquifer parameters should be incorporated into the model to design and develop an effective mine water control system.

An unusually pure grade of rutile and several grades of aplite rock are produced in a unique mining and mineral dressing operation in Hanover County, Virginia. The ore body is an aplite rock of gnessic structure, having a sari ace exposure extending over several hundred acres, heavily leathered and containing rutile, ilmenite, and other titanium and iron minerals. The physical nature and mineral composition of the ore body has permitted the use of a relatively economical and unusual processing circuit. The flowsheet was designed to take full advantage of the remarkable liberation of the minerals at relatively coarse rinds. It permits flexibility in changing the product mix, and maintains high levels of purity in both rutile and aplite rack. The mineral processing is discussed in some detail below.

A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

1. INTRODUCTION In this section, precious metals are defined as gold, silver, and the platinum group metals comprised of platinum, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium. If the first three years of the 1970's are the criteria, gold, silver, and platinum seem destined for a bright future. Gold advanced in price from the historic figure of $35 established in 1934 to over $100 per oz (1973). For the five years 1966 to 1970, silver consumption exceeded production by about 50%. The silver price appears to be definitely on the uptrend, and a price of over $3 per oz seems probable. On this basis (at 1964 costs) the United States has an estimated 5 billion oz of unmined silver. The fresh burst of interest in platinum with a surge of renewed price strength (end of 1972) is due to the activity in the automobile emission control area, where platinum re¬mains the front runner in the catalyst area. Some international financial experts believe that governments will not rush into reform of the monetary system, and "Special Drawing Rights" (SDR's) will gain increased standing as international mone¬tary reserve assets. Gold will continue to be reviewed as the ultimate store of value and will remain the global monetary base. Devaluation of the U.S. dollar caused by imbalance of import payments over ex¬ports is the basic reason that the price of gold will likely remain above the $90 per oz figure for the balance of the 1970's. Gold and silver usually occur intimately associated, and recovery methods are often closely related; however, they were assigned sepa¬rate chapters, because the major production of each metal is from ore deposits classified as either gold or silver. For example, the gold ore occurrences in South Africa, the world's leading gold producer, have a ratio of gold to silver of approximately 10 to 1. The ores at the Homestake Mine, Lead, S.D., the largest U.S. gold producer, are predominantly gold with a ratio to silver of approximately 5 to 1. Silver in each example is a byproduct. By this same classification, the largest U.S. silver producers are the silver ores of the Sunshine, Galena, and Lucky Friday mines in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. However, the largest single-mine silver producer in the Free World is the Kidd Creek Mine at Timmins, Ont., where the occurrence is with sulfides of copper, lead, and zinc. Thus, the major gold production of the world is derived from those ores classified as gold ores; whereas, less than one-half of the silver production is from silver ores, and only a small percentage of the silver production is from gold ores. 2. GOLD Gold, the noblest of metals, has been mined for thousands of years. Its chemical symbol, Au, is derived from the Latin "aurum," meaning "shining dawn." A precious substance because it is one of the rarest metals, it has unique physical properties: it does not tarnish; it exceeds all other metals or alloys in malleability and ductility; it is a good conductor of electricity and is one of the most nonreactive metals. Its greatest strength is its indestructibility. It is the only metal mined at depths exceeding 10,000 ft. Since the early 1800s, its chief role has been as a medium of exchange, providing the basis for interna¬tional trade. In the past 15 years, however, gold has emerged as a useful industrial commodity. This role has been fortified by the estab¬lishment of a two-tier pricing system which maintains monetary gold prices at an established U.S. Government price, with industrial gold being priced higher by the free-market system. Occurrences and Production Native gold furnishes most of the world's production, since gold forms stable natural compounds with few other elements. Neverthe¬less, the metal is widespread with traces of it found in seawater and in the ashes of plants and animal material. Next to the native metal, the tellurides have been the most important gold-bearing minerals; these include calaverite, krennerite, slyvanite, hessite, and nagyagite. Native gold is invariably alloyed with more or less silver, but it is exceptional to find any other metal in the alloy. It is found in veins associated with quartz, calcite, alunite, other gangue minerals, and with various sulfides. Sulfide minerals in order of frequent associa¬tion are: pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, tetrahe¬drite, and pyrrhotite. Small amounts of metallic gold are commonly disseminated through such sulfides. When considerable amounts of silver occur in gold, the mineral electrum is formed. In a few deposits, gold and mercury form natural amalgam. Native mercury is formed by weathering from cinnabar and other mercury minerals. Among the minerals sometimes mistaken for gold, pyrite, marcasite, and especially chalcopyrite may be men¬tioned. The flakes of biotite and other micas, especially when partially oxidized, also may imitate it closely. World gold reserves never have been estimated carefully. Esti¬mates indicate that present world reserves approximate I billion oz, of which about 60% occurs in South Africa and 20% in the USSR. World gold output is dominated by South Africa which produces two-thirds of the world's production from reserves that are adequate to maintain existing output levels. South African gold output comes from approximately 50 large underground operations that mine and mill 70 to 80 million tons of ore annually to recover 30 to 32 million oz of gold. The USSR is the second largest gold producer, followed by Canada and the United States (see Table 1). Gold production in the United States and Canada rose to high levels in the 1930's, following the increase in price from $20.67 to $35 per oz and with an abundance of good labor due to depression in other industries. Production of over 10 million oz in 1940 was behind only that of South Africa. World War II caused a precipitous drop in gold output due to the imposition of War Production Board Limitation Order L-208 issued in October 1942, which caused over 9,000 gold mines in the United States to shut down, most of which never reopened. The U.S. Treasury, which suspended purchases of newly mined gold in 1968, had been the sole buyer of U.S. produced gold since 1934. This created the two-tier pricing system, and in March 1972 the President signed into law a bill authorizing a $3 increase in the official price of gold to $38 per oz. In February 1973 the President ordered a second devaluation of the dollar, amounting to about 10% which raised the official price to $42.22 per oz. The advantages derived from the use of pellet burdens in blast furnaces are so great, that hematite ores are being converted into pellets in greater quantities each year. The conversion of these ores into pellets appears on the surface to be relatively simple. In reality, this is not so. Serious difficulties are encountered in drying these pellets that do not exist in the drying of taconite concentrate pellets. The ores that present problems are goethite and earthy hematites. Green pellets prepared from these ores have very law shock temperatures, 200-600° F. The shock temperature of a green pellet according to our definition is the highest initial temperature to which a green pellet may be exposed without suffering decrepitation. Decrepitation may involve spalling, fracturing or total disintegration. The poor shock properties of these green pellets result from the inability of the vaporized water to escape freely and easily as it is formed with¬out affecting the integrity of the pellet. As a consequence, the pellets must be carefully dried prior to induration. This careful treatment is costly. The slow drying process restricts productivity and requires larger furnaces than desired. The use of an additive to elevate the shock temperature of the green pellets would increase productivity. Bentonite is used in some pellet plants to improve balling but it raises the shock temperature only slightly. Nalco became interested in the shock temperature problem because of its activity in the development of organic pelletizing aids for taconite concentrates. The findings reported here are an outgrowth of our experimental work on the development of shock temperature additives.

The Pb-Zn-Ag deposits within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic strata of central Colorado (Leadville, Gilman, Aspen, and others) occur principally in Late Mississippian karst-solution features within dolomites and, to a lesser extent, limestones. Several un- conformities within the Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks and the subregional dolomitization of the Leadville (Mississippian) Formation that occurred during the Late Mississippian resulted from recurrent uplift of elements of the Ancestral Sawatch, Gore, and Front Range areas within central Colorado. Uplift of these areas also strongly influenced the details of the extensive karst topography that developed during the Late Mississippian. In particular, uplift of the Sawatch Range area caused paleovalleys from 300-600 ft deep to form on the karst landscape. The pattern of karst-solution caverns, sinkholes, cutters, channelways, and breccia-rubble zones was strongly controlled by incision of surface drainages and the strong northeast-trending Mississippian joint system. These subterranean karst-solution features and breccia-rubble soil [ ] zones are the primary controls of the location of the Pb-Zn-Ag ore deposits in these rocks. In the Leadville and Aspen districts, the deeply incised paleovalleys occur immediately adjacent to the principal areas of mineralization. Pennsylvanian deposition of a thick terrigenous and evaporite sequence occurred within central Colorado in response to actively subsiding extensional basins and adjacent high-relief uplift areas. Hot brines developed within the Pennsylvanian strata, migrated laterally to, and moved upward vertically along, basin- margin faults during continued Pennsylvanian subsidence and deposition. These metal-rich brines migrated into karst-solution features within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic dolomites and limestones, principally within the Leadville Formation, in basin- edge uplifted locales where the Pb-Zn-Ag minerals were precipitated. Field relationships, mineral assemblages and paragenesis, fluid-inclusion data, and isotope studies suggest that the metals and brines were derived within the Pennsylvanian sedimentary sequence and that the ore minerals were deposited under different temperatures and at different depths from deposit to deposit. Chemical reaction with the carbonate cave sediment and wallrock, cooling of fluid temperatures, and mixing with meteoric ground waters were the probable combined causes of mineral deposition in the karst-solution features. Late Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusive activity has subsequently modified some of the primary Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in local areas.

[There are significant quantities of anthracite silt deposits in Pennsylvania, known as 'liver silts" (l,2). These contain from 20 to 55 per cent of non-combustible materials, the major portion of these impurities being clay slimes. Both the anthracite coal and impurities are mostly of extremely fine particle size. The utilization of these raw silts in power-plants faces such serious problems as, handling difficulties causing plug-up in equipment, disposal of enormous ash-residue, and corrosion. These problems may be solved by upgrading the raw silt with a cleaning process, which will be capable of removing most of the clay slimes and electrolytes.]

The mining, beneficiation, and processing of phosphate rock in the Florida phosphate district constitutes a large portion of the southeastern mining industry. For example, 1973 production is reported to have been approximately 35 million tons of phosphate rock (Guimond and Windham, August 1975) and production has increased to over 45 million tons in recent years. The 1973 activity involved the movement of approximately 127 mil lion tons of material. From the hydrologic standpoint, this mining and beneficiation requires the dewatering of ore horizons, pumpage of large quanitites of water for mining and processing operations, and the entrainment of immense quantities of water in waste slurries. Also of significance is the fact that the cited 1973 production involved the disruption of approximately 3200 curies of radium and over 6000 curies of uranium. Much of this material reported with waste products, with the potential for contamination of area ground waters. However, natural removal mechanisms active within the area have generally been effective in preventing significant contamination of the ground-water resource.

The effectiveness of pre-reinforcement as an immediate stabilization measure as well as its contribution to the permanent stabilization of a tunnel were studied through the use of physical (Figure 1) and numerical models (1). Physical models were designed for the investigation of two pre-reinforcement systems: first, reinforcing far ahead of the main excavation (Figure 2); second, spiling reinforcement ahead of the face (Figure 3). In both cases, the use of reinforcement was responsible for permanently stabilizing an otherwise unstable opening. Data from the physical models were used to calibrate a numerical model from which additional information on long term behavior, methods to account for the capacity of a pre-reinforcement system, and the mechanisms involved were ascertained. These studies indicated that pre-reinforcement can stabilize a rock mass effectively as it reduces deformations and thereby deterioration due to strain softening, provides rock mass confinement leading to increased available strength, and maintains rock arch continuity allowing for increased tangential stress in the immediate vicinity of the opening. Field studies verified the capacity of spiling reinforcement to restrain initial deformations.

Two recently published papers describing the use of psychological tests for selection and placement of coal mine personnel have created considerable interest within the Coal Industry, one paper, published in the April 1957 "Mining Congress Journal," entitled "Personnel Evaluation and Training," discusses the use of tests by the Christopher Coal Company, The second paper, published in the "West -Virginia Coal Mining Institute's 1957 Report" and in the September 1957 "Coal Age," entitled "Testing to Select Better Personnel for Coal Mining Today," outlines Hanna Coal Company's test and selection procedures. Since these rather detailed sources are readily available, and to avoid repetition of the material in them, we will confine this paper to a very brief review of the essential steps already taken by these companies and a more extensive look at newer material. Briefly, the Personnel Managers, Mr. Harold L, Durrett and Mr. Albert M,. Rowe, of the Hanna Coal Company and Christopher Coal Company, in conjunction with Dr. Quin F, Curtis, Head of the Psychology Department of West Virginia University, developed two different groups oftests for coal mine personnel, The first group oftests was designed to assist in the selection of supervisors. These tests of the supervisory group were "The California Short Form Test of Mental Maturity - Advanced Series," which gave an I.Q. rating, and the second test is known as "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory," which measures several personality characteristics, These tests must be given, grade, and interpreted by a person trained in psychological testing. As a result of testing all of Christopher's supervisory employees (seventy in number) by this method, and then comparing the individual results with the individual ratings of the foremen on the job, a so-called foremen's scale was developed. If this resulting foremen's scale had been used to select the foremen who were rated as, the best men in on-the-job performance, it would have correctly identified seventy-four percent of that group.

Even though wet processes were used in coal preparation plants prior to 1941, dewatering coal was not a problem then because the finer sizes were uneconomical to recover and were considered waste. However, during the war years the scarcity of raw materials necessitated the utilization of every pound of natural resources and coal plants began seeking an economical mans of recovering fine coal. Early efforts to this end concentrated primarily on centrifugal dewatering devices. Such equipment produced good results but was relatively expensive. In 1944, a method was devised utilizing a vibrating screen fitted with a profile wire deck rather than the standard woven wire cloth deck. This machine came to be referred to as a dewaterizer. Results obtained with the dewaterizer approached those of the centrifugal equipment, but at a lower capital cost, Their use reduced either the number of centrifugal units required to follow the dewaterizers or the required energy input to heat dryers, In some cases they eliminated the need for any further dewatering equipment.

Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains eight miles north of the City of Santa Cruz and inland from the coast, lies a typical beach sand consisting of quartz and feldspar grains of the Santa Harguerita formation of the middle tertiary age, Reserves of over twenty-five million tons of this sand form the deposit presently being harvested by Pacific Cement & Aggregates, a Division of Lone Star Cement Corporation. The deposit ranges from 350 to 700 feet above sea level and varies from two percent passing a 200 mesh screen to ten percent retained on a ¼ inch screen (see Figure '#l) In 1929 the first sand plant went into operation at this site. It was replaced by a new plant in 1937. This plant continued operation until the middle of 1965 when replaced by the modern plant described in this paper.

The relationship of various genetic classifications of graphite, their properties and general applications are reviewed. The classifications being amorphous, flake, high crystalline (vein) primary synthetic graphite and secondary graphite. The properties discussed are size, carbon, sulfur, ash content, general chemical analysis and degree of graphitization of each type. The major sources for natural and synthetic graphite powders are discussed in addition to factors which govern the cost as well as the supply. The economics of graphite are basically determined by the consumer and the end application. Graphite is a strategic mineral and is on the government stockpile list.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.
