Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate(DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromite rejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

PZH (Pan Zhi Hua) Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation, the biggest steel company in southwest China, has been using titanium-vanadium-magnetite as the main raw materials for blast furnace iron making processing for over 30 years. One of the problems that has a negative affect on the blast furnace operation is slag foaming. Based on the chemical components of the blast furnace slag-bearing higher TiO2, the foaming properties were studied. The TiO2content, which is calculated according to the total titanium content in all the forms of titanium compound in the slag, in this research is 30% weight per cent. Different forms of titanium compounds have different actions on the slag foaming behaviour that depends on the reduction condition in the blast furnace. The relationships among slag foaming performance and the binary alkalinity of the slag, the content of CaF2, MnO in slag, and the amount of gas injected in slag are investigated. The results show CaF2 and MnO have a stronger anti-foaming affect on the slag, even in the lower percentage. Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

One of the valuation approaches applied to Advanced Exploration Areas and Pre-Development Projects is the so-called ?in situ Mineralization Method? or the ?Yardstick Method?. This method is based on the concept of a known undeveloped Mineral Resource being worth a certain fraction (the ?Yardstick?) of the contained commodity value (?metal in ground?), using commodity prices ruling at the date of valuation. The Yardstick value is derived usually from an average market-based figure obtained from an analysis of recent transactions and is expressed as a monetary value per ounce or per tonne. It maybe modified to accommodate the quality (e.g. grade) and category (e.g. confidence level) of the Mineral Resource/Reserve involved and the time, effort and expenditure expected to be involved in bringing the project to fruition. Some eighteen recent and relevant transactions were analysed, allowing the following general conclusions to be reached: ? a Yardstick with which to value undeveloped PGE mineral resources is likely to range between 0.5% and 2.5% of the in-ground contained metal value ? the expected method of mining (especially with regard to mining costs) and the grade of the mineralization both have a strong influence on the Yardstick ? the status (classification) of the Mineral Resource has some influence on the Yardstick and ? the ruling price of platinum and the regional location of the deposit appear to have insignificant influences on the Yardstick.

The waste-heat boiler is used within the Sulphide flash smelting process as the main dust and energy recovery unit. The large volume of off-gas discharged from the flash smelter is at a very high temperature (1350°C) and contains a significant dust load that subjects the downstream waste-heat boiler to tough and demanding conditions. The boiler cavity is especially prone to dust accretions, fouling, and corrosion caused by accumulation of molten particles and precipitation of sulphuric acid. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied within a qualitative study to model the flow and heat transfer distribution throughout the waste-heat boiler. The commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.2.16, was applied to a modified waste-heat boiler (23 m ×11 m ×5.4 m) within the Outokumpu flash smelting process. This investigation focuses on the geometric modifications to the typical boiler design, which includes elevation of the ceiling, placement of flow-obstructing baffles and radiation plates parallel within the flow path. Also investigated were various boiler operating conditions such as the circulation of process off-gas, air leakage from the dust discharging hoppers and variation in inlet gas composition. The geometric modifications had the desired effect of increasing the volumetric utilization and therefore enhancing heat transfer between the boiler surface and the gas stream and dust segregation. Introducing circulated off-gas at a rate of 20 m/s and at a 45° angle to the front of the waste boiler further enhanced cooling while reducing the high impact of the furnace-uptake gas-stream on the boiler ceiling. The placement of radiation plates was found to be very effective in enhancing the heat transfer surface and distributing gas flow within the boiler. Anisotropic behaviours of OhshimaOshima granite were investigated by carrying out uniaxial compression tests, together with observations of microcracks under an optical microscope. The elastic modulus tensor of Oshima granite at 10 per cent strength,E10, were calculated using theoretically formulation of elastic modulus tensor in terms of the second-rank crack tensor for pre-existing open microcracks. Furthermore, with the assumption of orthorhombic elasticity, the nine moduli of Oshima granite E10were determined by uniaxial compression test. Twenty-onemoduli of samples, calculated without assuming any symmetry, also showed orthorhombic features. Direction of the symmetry axes agreed well with the orientation of preexisting cracks. Comparison of crack tensor-based formulation results with the experimentally determined one show that the anisotropy of elasticity of Oshima granite is caused by pre-existing open microcracks, not by pre-existing healed microcracks and also crack tensor formulation can be used, as a first-order approximation at least, to describe the anisotropy of Oshima granite induced by pre-existing open microcracks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das anisotrope Verhalten des Oshima-Granits wurde mit Hilfe voneinachsigen Kompressionstests und durch die Betrachtung von Mikrorissen unter einem optischenLichtmikroskop untersucht. Das Elastizitätsmodul von Oshima-Granit bei 10 Prozent Kraft E10wurde berechnet, indem man die Formulierung des Elastizitätsmodultensors, ausgedrückt alsRisstensor zweiter Ordnung theoretisch auf bereits existierende Mikrorisse angewandt hat.Außerdem wurden die neun Module des Oshima-Granits unter der Annahme orthorhombischerElastizität E10mit einem einachsigen Kompressionstest bestimmt. The widely employed IPCC models for the release of methane from underground coalmining operations are reviewed, and put in the context of the South African National Communication on greenhouse gas emissions. Then attempts to calibrate the model via measurements on South African coalmines are described. These attempts failed because it rapidly became clear that the IPCC model, involving methane adsorbed by the coal and released (a) by the depressurization of the strata caused by mining, (b) from the broken coal and (c) from coal remaining in roof, floor, pillars or goaf after mining, was not valid. Instead, measurements showed that the methane release was very variable, sporadically falling to zero. Carbon dioxide concentrations were monitored at the same time as methane, and followed methane concentrations. An alternative model was developed, in which methane was largely displaced from the coal and held in fissures, cleats and pores, which, when intersected by mining, released methane into the ventilation stream. In a key test of this hypothesis, methane concentrations around a continuous miner were monitored both during operation and after shutdown. Even during operation, methane became undetectable. It is hypothesized that heating of the South African coal-seams during the emplacement of the igneous dykes that cut so many of the seams caused displacement of the methane from the coal into the pores. This fissure-held methane, or free methane, is released rapidly once a pathway through the coal into the mine atmosphere is established. In contrast, methane adsorbed in the coal, and measured as the seam gas, desorbs relatively slowly. Measurements suggest that on average about 50%of the adsorbed methane is lost one day after mining. By that time, the coal will have left the mine, so that the remaining seam gas will be released to the atmosphere outside the mine. Attempts to measure methane emissions from surface coal-mining operations showed very little detectable methane. Coal from surface operations, which was milled and exposed to atmosphere, adsorbed gas from the air. It is concluded that methane release from surface operations is probably less than 3Gg/a. It is estimated that the total methane release from the coalmining industry amounts to about 72 Gg/a, as opposed to the National Communication estimates of 323 Gg/a in 1990 and 317 Gg/a in 1994. However, there are large errors associated with these estimates, and it is recommended that the methodology outlined in this report be extended to as many mines as possible to reduce the errors that are inherent in the physical processes underlying the release of methane from South African coalmines.

The thermal state in submerged-arc furnaces (S.A.F.) producing ferro alloys is important for the conditions of both the grade of alloy produced as well as specific energy consumption. The temperature profile in the S.A.F. is affected by the endothermic chemical reactions and the rate of gas evolution. The gas evolution commences at about 900 C due to the reduction of iron in the ore. A first-principle-based 2-D model has been developed to predict the temperature profile in the furnace. In this study, four ores of different grades have been considered in order to simulate the thermal profile in the S.A.F. The influence of the composition of the ore on the thermal profile and its significance in rationalisation of charge distribution to optimise the process are discussed.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese containing stainless steels. Gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activity of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600°C which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600°C. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient repression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600°C. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Mining Engineering) degree This report investigates the optimization of a raiseline in order to open up the ore reserve quicker. The project was carried out at Mponeng Mine (an Anglogold shaft formerly known as Western Deep Levels 1 Shaft and South Mine, in Carletonville). The project was divided into two focus areas namely: ?To design an optimum layout of a raiseline, which includes the scheduling of all activities for the establishment of the infrastructure. Consideration was given to the blasting practice, mining cycle, orepass placement and slusher positioning. Two designs were carried out on the above basis. ?The design of a ledging operation/practice to match the optimized layout of the raiseline. The ledging cycle design involved a thorough investigation into the possible use of drill rigs, Electronic Delay Detonators (EDD) blasting technology, longer drilled holes, Threshold Blasting (THROB),and water jet cleaning.

Electrochemical measurements are presented on electro-deoxidation of silica in molten calcium chloride at 900°C, with porous silica pellets as starting material. Measurements during pre-electrolysis (to remove water from the melt) showed electrochemical noise, which is consistent with the evolution of hydrogen. Throughout, the dominant anodic reaction appears to be CO2formation, based on the observed potential at the anode, and measured anode wear. Because of the presence of dissolved CaO in the melt, some of the CO2 candissolve in the melt; the resulting calcium carbonate formation was confirmed by electrolyte analysis after reduction runs. Reduction of dissolved CO2 at the cathode is likely to contribute to the background current during the reduction process. For the electrode and cell configuration used here, most of the over potential arises from polarization of the anode, and ohmic potential drop in the electrolyte.

The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

Carbothermal reduction of manganese oxides and manganese ores in the solid state was studied in hydrogen, helium and argon at different temperatures, ore compositions and carbon to manganese oxide ratios. Wesselsore (South Africa) and two grades of the Groote Eylandt ore (Australia) with different level of impurities were examined. Ores were characterised by XRD, X-ray fluorescence, optical microscopy and scanning electronmicroscopy. Isothermal and temperature programmed carbothermal reduction experiments were conducted in a fixed bed reactor in a vertical tube furnace, with on-line monitoring of gas composition by the CO-CO2 infrared sensor. The reduced samples were characterised by XRD, SEM and LECO analyses. Extent of reduction was calculated using data on the off-gas composition, and LECO carbon and oxygen contents in the reduced sample. Manganese oxides in the ore were reduced to a-Mn and carbides Mn23C6 and Mn7C3 depending on the carbon to ore ratio. Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as residues merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps. For example, a process has been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glassy slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser)the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial. Tests were conducted on samples of rutile, titaniferous slag and ilmenite; each sample was mixed with coke and chlorinated in a bubbling fluidized bed at 1000°C. Profiles of the rates of chlorination of species were constructed from chemical compositions of the bed residues at different durations. From the start FeO and MnO are chlorinated quickly and all but entirely in a fraction of the time it takes to chlorinate all the TiO2. When the level of FeO is significant, as in slag and ilmenite, FeO is chlorinated faster than TiO2is. In these oxides, there is an inverse relationship between the rates of chlorination of FeO and TiO2during this first stage; the relationship, moreover, correlates linearly with the initial percentage of FeO in the oxide. We identify three stages in the chlorination process; a first, in slag and ilmenite, when FeO is being chlorinated; a second, when TiO2is most readily chlorinated; and a third, towards the end, when the levels of TiO2are reduced to those of other species. Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. The mould flux plays a crucial role in the continuous casting operation of steel due to its multi-functional assignment as lubricator and heat flux controller. In reality, the commercial fluxes can fall short of the expectations of the operator. In such cases, the performance of the mould flux reduces production throughput in the casting machine. This paper presents the results of a study of two different commercial mould fluxes in continuous casting of steels. The results of online sampling during casting, as well as off-line measurements in the laboratory, are presented. Mould flux powder and slag samples from the caster have been characterized with respect to melting behaviour, interfacial tension and thermal diffusivity, using various measuring techniques. An experimental technique has been developed in order to simulate the melting behaviour of a flux in the mould, which has been found to be useful for qualitative studies. A cross-sectional view of different powders reveals that up to four different material layers may exist in the bed: a loosely packed powder layer, sintered layer, semi-solid layer and liquid slag layer. It is found that the melting rate of the mould flux is dependent on the liquid slag layer thickness. Thus, in a continuous casting operation the melting rate is likely to be non-uniform with position in mould due to the difference in liquid slag layer thickness. Mould slag composition is found to be influenced by the starting powder for as long as 30 min, representing a large part of the first heat casting time.
