Treatment of tailings is an integral component of mineral processing. Tailings with a high clay content are a challenge for the mineral processing industry; e.g. the clay slimes produced from production of phosphate in the mid-western United States and the fine tailings produced from oil sands production in western Canada. Dispersants are a commonly used process aid, but their impact on the structure and settling properties of high clay content tailings is not well understood. The paper describes the changes in composition and bitumen release that occur when mature fine tailings (MFT) are treated with a polymeric dispersant (lignosulfonate.) Synchrotron-source computed tomography (CT) was used to obtain high-resolution 3D images of samples prepared at varying dosages of dispersant. The CT method permits a powerful visualisation of the internal structure and composition of the samples. These insights will enhance our understanding of the structural characteristics of mineral tailings relevant to solid-liquid separation by flocculation and thickening. Dr Andrew Cosgarea, Jr, Associate Director of Opera¬tions of the U.S. Mint, and Chairman of the Awards Committee of the International Precious Metals Institute, announced the IPMI award recipients for 1985. The awards were presented at the Institute's Annual Banquet in New York City on 11th June, 1985. The Distinguished Achievement Award was presented posthumously to Dr E.M. Savitsky, of the A.A. Baikow Institute of Metallurgy of the U.S.S.R., for a life-time career devoted to investigations on the properties of the platinum-group metals. Dr Savitsky investigated over 300 phase diagrams, which became the basis for the selection of alloys and the prediction of properties. He published over 300 technical papers during his career. Dr Savitsky died during the summer of 1984 while being considered for the IPMI Award. The Engelhard Henry J. Albert Award was presented to Dr Stephen J. Lippard, Professor of Chemistry, MIT, in recognition of his research contributions in platinum chemistry and its application to nucleic acids. This prize

During the past two to three years, there have been some significant Improvements to the quality of the support systems being used on South African gold mines, and the Implementation of these new developments, together with more worker awareness has been instrumental in reducing rock-related accidents, particularly in deep mines. This paper provides guidelines to mine and group personnel on how to monitor the ongoing Implementation of new technologies and so ensure the benefits that will accrue in terms of mine safety and profitability. Particular attention is given to the establishment of auditing procedures that will enable management to assess the benefits obtained from new technologies, as well as providing Improved maintenance procedures and procedures for the optimum utilization of seismic data. The areas that receive most attention include support systems for stopes and tunnels, such as hydraulic props, backfill, and rockburst-resistant tunnel support; stope and regional support layouts; mine standards; and staffing of the rock-engineering department. The minerals industry is represented through employers, employees, government, education, research, public views, and even pure political interests. The role of the Institute is to represent the mining and metallurgical profession. In this role the Institute has aligned itself with Associated Scientific and Technical Societies, the Council of Scientific Societies and the Engineering Association. The Institute is also active on the Engineering Council of South Africa.

From 19 November 1996, South African companies will be able to manage the impact their activities have on the environment in terms of international standards. The establishment of a registration scheme for environmental management systems was formally announced by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) (19 November 1996). At a function held at the SABS head office in Pretoria, Dr Jean du Plessis, President of the SABS, announced the launch of the SABS ISO 14001 registration scheme which is based upon ISO 14001, 'the internationally recognized yardstick for environmental management'.

Over 200 delegates attended the SAIMM Colloquium on Flotation, which was held at Mintek on 22nd September, 1983. In introducing the programme, the Chairman of the Technical Programme Committee, Mr Eugene Fivaz, said that an attempt had been made to strike a balance between theoretical and practical papers, which he hoped would provide something for everyone. He wished to record in advance the thanks of the Institute to S.A. Cyanamid for sponsoring the lunch, and to Bateman Equipment Limited for the cocktail party to be held at the end of the day's proceedings.

Professor Miklos Salamon, Research Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, has won the Rock Mechanics Award for 1983 of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers 'for applications of analysis to many varied practical mine design problems’. Professor D. G. Krige, of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of the Witwatersrand, received the degree of Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) from the University of Pretoria at the Autumn Graduation Ceremony in April 1981. He was honoured an outstanding engineer for his world-renowned pioneering work in the field of statistical methods of ore valuation, or geostatistics as it has become known. Metalliferous Ore Deposits A short course on the 'Evolution of Metalliferous Ore Deposits' will be held at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, from 8th to 13th February, 1982.

A comminution model and a quick laboratory milling test procedure are presented. These allow the determination of milling parameters for the - optimization of ball size and pulp density in operating mills estimation of the performance of new feed stocks in an existing mill - estimation of the expected milling performance for a new project. Information on the estimation of the size of mills to deliver specified amounts of comminution energy, and amount of expected ball, rod, and liner wear to allow cost estimates for new projects, is also included.

The National Institute for Metallurgy was the venue for a one-day colloquium on 'The Chemistry of Processes for the Recovery of Gold on Activated Carbon'. Organized by the South African Chemical Institute (Southern Transvaal Section) in collaboration with the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the colloquium attracted tremendous interest from the mining industry. Some 300 metallurgists, engineers, and chemists were brought up to date on advances in this technology made by scientists of NIM and the Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL).

The theme of the Congress was 'Resources and Technology', the intention being to highlight those basic technical aspects in the disciplines of geology, mining, extractive metallurgy, and metals technology that are required for successful mineral-based operations. The technical programme covered a fairly broad field, as is appropriate for the CMMI Congress, and was generally considered to be of a high professional standard; informative and, with the exception of some minor hitches, well-run. Parallel sessions were held in the four disciplines. All were well attended, and despite tight presentation schedules, certain valuable discussions developed.

A literature survey of methods suitable for the determination of cyanides in process streams and effluents is presented. Of the large number of methods published, 92 are examined in detail, emphasis being placed on the selectivity of the methods, i.e. the extent to which they enable one to distinguish between ionic cyanide and metal-cyanide complexes. Methods designed for the determination of 'total cyanide' (i.e. ionic cyanide as well as coordinated cyanide) are evaluated critically. Other aspects of the methods are also considered, such as sensitivity, accuracy, speed, and freedom from interferences.

Research into the ferrous metallurgy of Rhodesian Iron Age societies M. D. PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. A school on the principles and practices of ladle metallurgy, organized by the Technical Committee: Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held at the University of Pretoria from 13th to 16th November, 1989. The course leader, Professor R.J. Fruehan from the Carnegie Melon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, presented the main part of the course. Three papers were read by local steelmakers on the experience gained in the field of ladle metallurgy in South Africa. The School also included a special half day seminar on new and innovative steelmaking and casting processes presented by Professor Fruehan.

After inflation, energy is probably today's most talked-about and controversial economic issue. It is a plentiful supply of energy that has permitted each of us to live a life of convenience that is matched only by the most fortunate of the aristocracy in history.

John Keith Elers Douglas recently retired from active participation in the activities of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy after over forty years of diligent and valuable service to the Institute. This account of his contributions to the mineral industry and associated organizations is presented as a tribute to all his hard work and dedication. Mineral processing The Fourteenth International Mineral Processing Congress, sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, is to be held in Toronto from 22nd to 27th October, 1982. The theme of the meeting is 'Worldwide industrial application of mineral technology'.

Float-sink analysis has wide application in the coal laboratory. This paper evaluates the established methods used for the float-sink analysis of fine coal, and then describes a new method and apparatus that can be used for material down to a few micrometres in size. The method is rapid and accurate, and requires only a small amount of sample. The results presented show close agreement with the float-sink analyses obtained by the more classical technique using separating columns. The new centrifugal method reduces the time required for the analysis by a factor of ten.
