The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. 1. INTRODUCTION It gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 30th International Conference of Safety in Mines Research Institutes. I would also like to bid a special welcome to all of the international delegates who have travelled to Johannesburg to take part in what surely be a most rewarding session of deliberations. As you come together over next four days, you will have a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and information on strategies and practices for the implementation of sustainable patterns of development. The objectives of this meeting are both timely and far-reaching, as countries around the globe work towards the sustainable use of the world resources. Each of you brings a high level of expertise to these deliberations. I know that you will make the most of this opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities to highlight the most innovative and technologically efficient methods of social protection in order to ensure an increase in the quality of life, health, safety and living environment for the peoples of the Africa. Our country, although endowed with an immense and diverse array of mineral deposits, is perhaps best known in the mining industry for the fact that it is the world’s biggest producer of gold. Although South African gold production has declined over the past years and the industry faces serious problems, it is a myth that the South African industry is moribund. There is a new energy coursing through the South African producers which will ensure their powerful presence for many years to come, based not only on their domestic production but also and probably increasingly on their external operations. Africa features prominently in the latter category.

Empirical equations established for estimating the rock strength of the working face based on the cutting forces of a tunnel boring machines (TBM) are further examined and discussed with respect to the dominant factors affecting TBM performance. Constants in the equations are related to TBM-specific parameters such as excavation (tunnel) diameter, cutter diameter, and cutter distance. The relationship between the constants and the TBM specifications is examined in this study on the basis of data collected at ten tunnels, and it is found that the constants are most strongly influenced by the cutter diameter and tunnel diameter. Zur Schätzung der Gesteinsfestigkeit an der Arbeitsfläche ermittelte empirische Gleichungen, die auf den Schneidekräften von Tunnelbohrmaschinen (TBM) beruhen, wurden weiter im Hinblick auf die vorherrschenden, die Leistung der TBM beeinflussenden Faktoren hin untersucht und diskutiert. In der Gleichung enthaltene Konstanten werden zu den TBM-spezifischen Parametern wie Auschachtungs- (Tunnel) Durchmesser, Schneidendurchmesser und Schachtlänge in Beziehung gesetzt. Die Beziehung zwischen diesen Konstanten und den technischen Daten der TBM wird in dieser Studie auf der Basis der bei 10 Tunnelbauten gesammelten Daten untersucht. Dabei wurde gefunden, dass diese Konstanten am stärksten von den Durchmessern der Schneiden und der Tunnel beeinflusst werden. Cette étude examine et discute les équations empiriques permettant d'estimer la résistance de la roche attaquée aux forces de coupe des tunneliers dans le cadre de l'étude des facteurs dominants affectant les performances des tunneliers. Les constantes de ces équations concernent les paramètres spécifiques des tunneliers comme le diamètre d'excavation (du tunnel), le diamètre du couteau et la distance de coupe. Cette étude examine le rapport entre ces constantes et les caractéristiques techniques des tunneliers d'après des données collectées dans dix tunnels et elle conclut que ces constantes sont principalement influencées par le diamètre du couteau et le diamètre du tunnel.

On the basis of in situ study of pillar loading at different sites, an attempt is made in this paper to visualize the development of mining induced stress under varying geo-mining conditions. Field study demonstrated interesting interaction between size of pillar and nature of roof rock mass under the influence of increasing dimension of the excavation. Stiffness of pillars/overburden, extraction ratio and depth cover are observed to be the important parameters for the estimation of mining induced stress over the pillar. These parameters influence, both, the value of ultimate induced stress (vertical) and its range of influence ahead of the face line. Further, it is observed that the change in width/height (w/h) ratio of a pillar has got considerable influence over the nature of mining induced stress over it. Impact of highly dynamic nature of mining induced stress over the natural supports is observed to be the most serious factor for the safety of working under a hard and massive roof rock mass. On the basis of these observations, a conceptual model of interaction between the natural support and overlying strata is discussed in the paper. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Aufgrund ist in situ Studium von Säule Beladung an verschiedenen Stellen, ein Versuch in diesem Papier gemacht, die Entwicklung des Bergbaus vostellen sich, Spannung unter Änderung von Geo Bergbau von Bedingungen hat veranlaßt. Feld Studium hat interessante Wechselwirkung zwischen Größe von Säule und Natur von Dach Felsen Masse unter dem Einfluß von Vermehrung Dimension des excavation vorgeführt. Steifheit des Säulen Overburden, Herausziehung Verhältnisses und Tiefe sind beobachtet bedeckt, die wichtigen Parameter für die Schätzung des Bergbaus zu sein, Spannung über der Säule hat veranlaßt. Diese Parameter beeinflussen, beide, der Wert allerletzter veranlaßter Spannung (senkrecht) und sein Bereich des Einflusses voraus von der Gesicht Linie. Weiter ist, es beobachtet, daß die Änderung in Breite Höhe (W H) Verhältnis einer Säule beträchtlichen Einfluß über der Natur des Bergbaus erhalten hat, Spannung hat darüber veranlaßt. Schlag sehr dynamischer Natur des Bergbaus ist Spannung über den natürlichen Stützen beobachtet hat veranlaßt, der ernsteste Faktor für die Sicherheit des Arbeitens unter einer harten und massiven Dach Felsen Masse zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Beobachtungen, ein begriffliches Modell der Wechselwirkung zwischen der natürlichen Stütze und der überlagernde strata ist im Papier diskutiert. RESUME: En se basant sur dans l'étude de situ de chargement de pilier aux sites différents, une tentative est faite dans ce papier pour envisager le développement de creuse la tension persuadée sous varier de conditions de geo creuse. L'étude de champs a démontré l'interaction intéressante entre la taille de pilier et la nature de masse de rocher de toit sous l'influence d'augmenter de dimension de l'excavation. La raideur de piliers overburden, la proportion d'extraction et la couverture de profondeur est observée pour être les paramètres importants pour le jugement de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus le pilier. Ces paramètres influencent, les deux, la valeur de tension persuadée ultime (vertical) et sa gamme d'influence en avant de la ligne de face. Plus, il est observé que le changement dans la largeur hauteur (le w h) la proportion d'un pilier a reçu l'influence considérable par-dessus la nature de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus il. L'impact de nature extrêmement dynamique de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus les soutiens naturels est observé pour être le facteur le plus sérieux pour la sûreté de fonctionnement sous une masse de rocher de toit dure et massive. Ion exchange is considered to be an effective technology for the removal of various impurities from cobalt advance electrolytes. With the correct choice of resin, ion exchange can consistently remove the required impurities to the levels for the production of high-grade cobalt metal. Although ion exchange was in the past used primarily for nickel removal, more recently it has been also considered for the removal of copper, zinc, and cadmium. Generally, granular ion exchange products are used, but Mintek is currently evaluating ion exchange fibres for a number of applications, including the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolytes. Fibrous ion exchangers have major advantages compared to granular resins in that they have significantly higher reaction rates, and wash water volumes could be limited. Granular and fibrous ion exchangers were evaluated and compared for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte. A synthetic electrolyte containing 50 g/L cobalt and 50 mg/L copper was used for the test work. Equilibrium isotherms, mini-column tests, and split elution tests were done. The results were used to size a full-scale operation to treat 100 m3/h of electrolyte. The potential cobalt losses or recycle requirements were estimated, and data to calculate indicative operating costs for each adsorbent was generated. This information was used for a techno-economic comparison of granular and fibrous ion exchange systems for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte.

The position of Australia as a continuing long-term supplier of mineral sands, and their upgraded products, has been reinforced with the discovery of the extensive mineral reserves in the Murray Basin, an area covering parts of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. A major impurity in the Murray Basin is chromium, mainly present in ilmenite concentrates as individual chrome spinel grains. Magnetizing roast treatments are being evaluated as a means of removing the chrome spinel impurity from the ilmenite and as a result of the roast and magnetic separation treatments, the chrome spinels can be expected to be concentrated in the non-magnetic reject fractions. It is from these fractions that attempts were made in this study to recover a chromium-rich product by magnetic fractionation and by application of flotation. The high gauss non-magnetic rejects from the roasting of a primary and a secondary ilmenite fraction were magnetically fractionated to obtain a product with 40.5 and 28.7 per cent Cr2O3,respectively. From the high gauss non-magnetic reject from the roasting of a primary ilmenite, flotation produced a chromium-rich product assaying 29.5 wt per cent Cr2O3at 69.0 per cent recovery. In another test a magnetic fraction assaying 32.9 wt per cent Cr2O3was floated to yield a chromium-rich product with 39.7 wt per cent Cr2O3at 96.4 per cent recovery. X-ray diffraction patterns of all the products indicated that the spinel concentrated was a ferroan magnesiochromite with rutile, ilmenite and hematite as impurities. Since all products were from a single pass, further processing can be expected to remove the impurity minerals and yield higher grade products. The material produced from the Murray Basin ilmenites in this study had similar compositions to commercial chromite ores, except for titania levels that were much higher. The high titania levels were due to residual rutile in the products, but it is expected that this can be removed with further processing. The mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin are scattered over a wide area and the amount of chromite that may be produced from each of these deposits is unlikely to be sufficient to support an export market. Consequently, any chromite produced in the Murray Basin will most likely need to be processed locally to value added products for a niche market such as chemicals production. LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. Design and development of the world?s largest flotation cell was completed in 2002. This was the first 257 m3 flotation cell installed in the mineral industry and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells. This cell has a 50% increase in volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO® Smartcell? flotation machine. In the next few years it is anticipated that 257 m3 flotation cells will be incorporated into rougher-scavenger flotation circuits in many more world class copper sulphide concentrators. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No.250 Smartcell? flotation machine was installed at Minera Los Pelambres in the front of Row 1 in the existing rougher flotation circuit. This cell is followed by nine No. 130 Smartcell? flotation cells. After the successful development phase, this unit has been incorporated as part of a row of No. 250 Smartcell? flotation machines at Minera Los Pelambres. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No. 250 flotation cell, and present a case study of the in-plant equipment testing. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulphide concentrator.

This study investigates the feasibility of using waste iron slag, the by-product from a mineral sands processing works, in road construction. The study includes the different options investigated for the treatment of a leachate that is produced during the cooling of the iron slag, prior to processing. It also reviews the reasons for choosing the current treatment option that is being trialed. Cooling the iron slag with water results in the formation of a leachate with a high pH and high sulphide concentration. This leachate can seep into the ground and, over time, it will contaminate the ground water. A system was designed to collect and treat the leachate to prevent contamination of surrounding natural water sources. Numerous leachate treatment options were investigated to find cost effective method of treatment After cooling, the iron slag is passed through an iron recovery plant and the unsaleable product is placed on a dumpsite. Rain percolates through the dumpsite, which can result in the formation of a leachate that can contribute to a contaminated plume. After extensive testwork, it was found that the dumpsite, which was leached of contaminants, could be screened and used as a G5material (specifications in Table II) in road construction. The initial challenge was to establish that this material was environmentally safe for use in this particular application. Approval from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) was required for the testwork and then for the long-term use of this material in the construction industry. The following challenge involved establishing a market for the material. Construction companies in the area were reluctant to change to a new product that was not naturally occurring. The economics of this project are extremely sensitive to transport costs and hence only projects within a specified radius can be supplied with the Black Top Gravel (BTG). This project is not are venue generator, but it does save the money that would be required to manage the dump, and it reduces the closure costs.

The Quaternary Age aeolian dune sands of the Sibaya Formation on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast are well known for their heavy mineral content. Although ilmenite, rutile and zircon are the economically important members of the heavy mineral suite, many other nonsilicate minerals such as monazite, xenotime, chromite, magnetite, and spinel that are normally considered to be eitherun common or even rare are also present and these sands provide a unique opportunity to study such complex minerals. Monazite is the general term used for a complex series of rare earth phosphates dominated by lanthanum, cerium and neodymium with monazite-Ce, monazite-La and monazite-Nd recognized as distinct end members of the solid solution series. In addition to the elements indicated by the simplified formulae (LaCeNd) PO4monazite can also accept significant quantities of other elements from the lanthanide and actinide series (Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy,Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Th, Pa, U, Np). The monazite grains in the Sibaya Formation occur as both composite grains, composed of two or more distinct mineral phases, and homogeneous grains. The net physical properties of the composite grains, and their response to magnetic and electrostatic separation methods are related to size and composition of non-monazite component. However, the homogeneous monazite grains also display significant variation in their physical properties related to their chemical composition.

Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.

Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well known and established process. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+ in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: 1. SX-1: Standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6-8 g/L Cu and 50 g/L H2SO4. 2. SX-N: Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3 etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to 10 g/L. 3. SX-2: Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100-150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility in Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory scale, the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX-2 2-3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with Alamine based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 & SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E=2S for SX-2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

'Increased underground extraction of coal' was the theme selected for the 1981 mining vacation school, which was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in January and February. The response of the industry to the invitation to register was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged between 26th January and 13th February. In terms of the total number of delegates, some 225 actually attending, the school can be described as the most successful ever organized by the Institute.

In this paper, we present a sensitivity study for the numerical modelling of hydromechanical coupling around a shaft in partially saturated claystone. Two representative constitutive models have been used: an elastoplastic damage model (IDEPLML) and an elastic perfect plastic model based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion (H&B). A series of comparative studies have been performed with respect to main parameters involved in coupling process (mechanical, hydraulic and hydric properties). The emphasis is put on the evaluation of induced plastic, damaged and failed zone due to excavation and drying process. Dans ce papier, nous présentons une étude numérique paramétrique du comportement hydromécanique couplé d’une argilite partiellement saturé, lors du creusement et de la maintenance d’un puit L’étude paramétrique porte à la fois sur le type de modèle et sur les principaux paramètres (mécaniques hydrauliques et hydriques) intervenant dans le couplage. L’accent est principalement porté sur l’évaluation des zones plastifiées autour de l’ouvrage lors de la désaturation. In unserem Beitrag geht es um eine digitale parametrische Untersuchung über das hydromechanische Verhalten eines teilweise durchtränkten Tons beim Abteufen und dem Betrieb von Schächten. Die parametrische Analyse konzentriert sich auf den Modelltypus und auf die wesentlichen bei der Verbindung wirksamen Parameter, d.h. die mechanischen, hydraulischen und hydrologischen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Bewährung der plastifizierten Bereiche des Bauwerkes während der Austrocknung.
