The Strawberry tungsten mine is in the Jackass Mining District, in an isolated portion of eastern Madera County, near the southeast corner of the Yosemite National Park. The deposit was discovered in 1941, and production started in 1943 when the mill was completed. With the exception of 1946 and 1947, production has been continuous. The area in the vicinity of the mine is granite containing islands of sedimentary beds highly altered by metamorphism that resulted from the intrusion of acid igneous rock. Schoelite occurs in almost vertical lenses of tactite between the limestone and the granite.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the S02 leaching of MgO from high-MgO-bearing Florida phosphate concentrates. The S02 was effective in leaching some of the MgO from three phosphate concentrates; flow rate of the S02 and leach time were major factors in determining the amount of MgO leached. Calcining the samples, then grinding to minus 200 mesh, and elevating the leach temperature gave only small increases in the amount of MgO leached. The research also showed that some of the MgO was so intimately associated with the phosphate mineral that it could not be removed by S02 leaching. This amounted to about 0.6, 0.7, and 1.0 pct MgO in three leached residues. The calculated heads for the three concentrate samples averaged 1.4, 1.1, and 1.5 pct MgO, respectively, before leaching.

This paper on methods and costs of mining at the Westside mine, in the Tri-State zinc-and lead-mining district (Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma), is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. Methods and equipment used in drilling, loading, and underground transportation have changed radically since the latest Bureau of Mines publications2/ on mining methods in the district were published more than 20 years ago. More efficient methods and machines have been developed in order to maintain low operating costs in the face of rising labor and supply costs and lower grade ore. The rate of conversion to mine mechanization was disappointing at times; local conditions required the development of special equipment, and available rock-moving machines had to be remodeled and strengthened.

The Bumpus Cove area is in Unicoi County, Tenn., about 9 miles south of Jonesboro and 5 miles northwest of Erwin. Iron and lead ores were mined in the Bumpus Cove area before the American Revolution. The production of those metals continued intermittently until 1916. In 1850 this area was the most important producer of iron in the South. In 1911 several carloads of zinc ore was recovered from old dumps and shipped to Missouri smelters. In 1913 systematic mining of zinc ores was begun and continued until 1916. After that year, mining again became sporadic and continued so until discontinued in 1943.

Many gold-bearing ores throughout the Western United States contain small quantities of mercury. The presence of mercury not only decreases the gold-loading capacity of the activated carbon, but complicates the fire refining of cathodes and creates a potential health hazard. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods to limit mercury extraction during gold ore leaching and to remove mercury from cyanide leach solu-tions. Mercury dissolution was reduced from 40 to 10 pct by decreasing NaCN concentration from 20 lb to 0.34 lb per ton of solution at a pH of <11. When 0.1 lb CaS per ton of ore was added to a leach slurry, mer-cury extraction was reduced from 27 to 0.4 pct. Less than 0.5 pct of the mercury was solubilized when <0.1 lb CaS per ton of are, along with lime and NaCN, was added to a simulated grinding circuit.

This report is a description of equipment and test procedures used by the Federal Bureau of Mines in laboratory studies on the explosibility of dusts. The principal tests concern ignition temperature, minimum explosive concentra¬tion, minimum electrical energy for ignition, limiting oxygen concentration, pressure, and rates of pressure rise. As new materials often present unique problems, variations in the general procedure and special tests performed are indicated, The general procedures for handling a dust sample from its receipt at the laboratory to the preparation of the report are described. The repro¬ducibility of the respective tests are shown. A brief history of laboratory studies on dust explosions by the Bureau of Mines and a description of current equipment and test procedures used are presented in this report. Its purpose is to facilitate interpretation of data previously published and those proposed to be published on the numerous mineral, agricultural and industrial dusts that have been studied. Through understanding and interpretation of the laboratory data obtained for the parameters of explosibility, preventive measures can be adopted for alleviat¬ing the hazard of dust explosions arising in manufacturing and processing industries.

Electrooxidation of cinnabar mercury ores (HgS) was investigated as a means of providing an effective and economical hydrometallurgical technique for extraction of mercury from its ores, particularly those too low in grade to allow economical metal recovery by retorting or furnacing techniques. Oxidation was accomplished by electrolysis of ere slurried with brine. Cinnabar was dissolved by oxidation of the insoluble sulfide to soluble mercuric salts. The mercury ion in a brine solution forms a stable tetrachloro complex. Typical laboratory experiments required I to 7 hours of electrolysis at 35-percent pulp density in a brine solution that contained 4 to 20 weight-percent sodium chloride (NaCl). Power consumption ranged from 10 to 50 kwhr/ton of dry ore. Mercury extraction values between 90 and 99 percent were obtained with all of the ores investigated. Subsequent mercury recovery from leach solutions was readily accomplished by precipitation on zinc. Pilot mill experiments in a 100- to 200-lb/hr extraction plant are in progress to quantify power and reagent requirements, and extraction and recovery data obtained to date closely parallel those obtained in the laboratory.

Like many gem materials, amber has a colorful history which may be traced through the writings of the ancients and the ornamental relics discovered from time to time. Like few gem materials, however, it is distinctly useful in products whose value has no connection with the gem industry. Long prized for its beauty, amber was fashioned into articles of jewelry and ornaments to please the fancy of ancient rulers and to find a place among treasured pos- sessions in their tombs; it has been used by adherents of various creeds for rosaries and other religious symbols; and although still sold for these pur- poses it also lends itself to such commercial purposes as raw material for varnish. Amber is only on the border-line of the mineral kingdom; actually it is of vegetable origin, having been formed as resin from trees of the conifer family that existed during the Tertiary period. It is the hardest of the fos- sil gums. The United States produces no amber, although a few occurrences are known. Most of the world's supply comes from East Prussia, where it is ob- tained from both land and sea. For many years pieces of amber were gathered from the Baltic by fishermen and deep-sea divers; and although about 10 per- cent of the Prussian amber is still recovered from the sea, most of the out- put is mined from open pits on the Samland Peninsula.

"INTRODUCTION The primary object of this investigation was to determine changes in physical and chemical properties of subbituminous lump coal while in storage for 8 months in a typical residence and to demonstrate how this fuel may be stored without degradation or spontaneous combustion. The second object of the study was to determine how the stored coal performed in a hand-fired furnace operated under practical conditions.The investigation revealed that if care is exercised in placing sub-bituminous lump coal in a closed bin, no significant slacking or degrada¬tion occurs, no hazards arise, and over-all indicated efficiencies of about 65 to 69 percent can be obtained under practical,firing conditions that the average home owner can meet.Owing to the war emergency, much attention is being given to the proper storage of coal, and campaigns are being conducted to increase the quantity of coal being stored to relieve transportation and production overloads. Ordinarily, coal dealers do not recommend storage of subbituminous coal in homes owing to deterioration of the coal and to possible hazards from spontaneous combustion. This practice has grown from some troubles that have been experienced, which can be traced to improper preparation, improper bins, and poor technique in placing coal in a bin. There is no good reason why subbiturninous lump coal cannot be stored safely in homes."

The Andover-Sulphur Hill iron mines in Sussex County, N. J., have a production record extending over 100 years. The last production recorded was about 1880. These mines produced high-grade ore of two types: Bed ore (hematite) and blue ore (magnetite. Some sulfides (lead, zinc, and copper) were found underlying the iron deposits. Data as to size and grade of these sulfide bodies are very sketchy, Toward. J. Hewitt of Elizabeth, N. J., lessee of the Sulphur Hill mines from 194045, prospected for lead, zinc, and copper. .His Only production was several hundred tons of low-grade iron ore, which was crushed and used as heavy aggregate to make concrete blocks for ship ballast. In October and November 1942 made a magnetic survey of this area and bored six-diamond-drill holes with the dual objective of prospecting for sulfides and testing for extensions of the iron-ore deposits indicated by the magnetic survey. In 1944, an iron-mining company examined this property and diamond-drilled seven holes Between December 1949 and March 1950, the Bureau Of Mines in search of sulfide deposits, bored three additional diamond-drill holes. Two of these were on the Sulphur Hill tract and one on the adjoining Tar Hill tract.

Mullite is a substance of prime importance in ceramic technology . Despite this fact , its thermodynamic properties have received little attention . A Bureau of Mines literature survey disclosed the absence of lowtemperature heat capacity data , the absence of an experimental entropy value for 298.15 ° K , and the lack of heat content data beyond the temperature range from 298° to 576 ° K. Data supplied in this Bureau report fill these gaps in the thermodynamic knowledge of mullite . According to equilibrium phase studies of Aramaki and Roy ,3 the mullite phase melts congruently at 2,123 ± 15 ° K , and the equilibrium crystallinephase composition extends from Al Si2013 to Al6.8 Si₂ Q4.2 . The results in this report are for the stoichiometric composition , Al Si¿Qз . • Heat capacity measurements were made over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K , and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated . The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines developed induction slag melting process is of concern to members of the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of CaF2 inclusions on the properties of titanium and its survival rate during melting. The data were obtained from single induction-slag-melted ingots prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct and also with 2- and 1-pct additions of CaF2 slag. The results of this effort showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H, but these materials are much more notch sensitive in fatigue than normal Ti-6A1-4V alloy titanium. First and second vacuum-arc remelts of single-induction-slag-melted ingots fragmented and increased the number of inclusions, while reductions in the amount of flux resulted in an upward trend in the spatial distance between pores in an x-y plane.

The Bureau of Mines studied airblast from surface mining to assess its damage and annoyance potential, and to determine safe levels and appropriate measurement techniques. Research results obtained from direct measurements of airblast-produced structure responses, damage, and analysis of instrument characteristics were combined with studies of sonic booms and human response to transient overpressures. Safe levels of airblast were found to be 134 dBL (0.1 Hz), 133 dBL (2 Hz), 129 dBL (6 Hz), and 105 dB C-slow. These four air- blast levels and measurement methods are equivalent in terms of structure response, and any one could be used as a safe-level criterion. Of the four methods, only the 0.1-Hz high-pass linear method accurately measures the total airblast energy present; however, the other three were found to adequately quantify the structure response and also represent techniques that are readily available to industry. Where a single airblast measuring system must be used, the 2-Hz linear peak response is the best overall compromise. The human response and annoyance problem from airblast is probably caused primarily by wall rattling and the resulting secondary noises. Although these will not entirely be precluded by the recommended levels, they are low enough to pre- clude damage to residential structures and any possible human injury over the long term.

"This paper discusses the evaluation and application of a portable parked-vehicle tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA). The EMA consists of an exhaust dilution system and a portable instrument package. The EMA instantaneously dilutes and cools a sample of exhaust with compressed nitrogen or air at a known dilution ratio, thereby presenting it to instruments as it is presented to personnel in the surrounding environment. The operating principles and governing equations of the EMA are presented.A computational method is presented to determine the engine operating and performance parameters from the exhaust CO2 concentrations along with an assumed engine overall volumetric efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. The parameters determined are fuel / air ratio, mass flow rates of fuel, air and exhaust emissions, and engine brake torque and horsepower. These calculated engine parameters are used to characterize engine load when performing EMA in-field tailpipe sampling without a dynamometer, and to detect deteriorated engines.Evaluations of the EMA by comparison of diesel tailpipe measurements with those made using laboratory-grade instruments showed that the EMA measurements are accurate and reproducible. The results also show that the EMA is capable of detecting emission concentration changes resulting from engine faults. Calculated engine operating and performance parameters correlate and compare well with laboratory-measured values.The EMA in-field engine loading and tailpipe sampling procedures for parked vehicles are presented, and results of the EMA field measurements are also presented. Low coefficients of variation for repeat EMA tailpipe measurements on diesel-powered haulage vehicles in four underground mines indicate that the EMA in-field engine loading and tailpipe sampling procedures are reproducible.An analysis of EMA tailpipe measurements for three haulage vehicles in one mine shows that the EMA can: 1) identify haulage vehicles that emit excessively high pollutant concentrations, and 2) provide data needed to evaluate and determine the efficiency and effectiveness of tailpipe emission control devices.Finally, recommendations for a proposed commercial EMA system are presented. This commercial system would overcome many of the adverse features of the prototype EMA used in these tests."

As part of a program to devise alternative technologies for producing alumina from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay to form basic aluminum chloride solutions. Bench-scale experiments were conducted for single-stage batch leaching with AICl3 solution and three-stage countercurrent leaching with substoichiometric HCI. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous pilot plant flotation tests on a complex calcareous fluorspar ore from Cave-in-Rock, Ill., to determine the technical feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates by the sodium fluoride-calcium lignin sulfonate-fatty acid method of concentrating fluorspar previously developed by the Bureau. The continuous flotation tests, treating about 150 pounds of ore per hour, produced fluorspar concentrates assaying 96.4 percent CaF2; 90 percent of the fluorspar was recovered.

A generalized flow diagram is presented in Figure 1, which shows the relationship of major model functions. This chart does not necessarily represent the anatomy of the computer program, but is designed to illustrate the informational interchange between major model functions. The related flow-charts-and computer program are listed in Parts I and II, Appendix A, respectively. Mine Car Stations The mine car stations are the activity centers for the model. The locomotive logic structure is designed to provide these stations with adequate cars and to clear them of car buildup. The model is designed to simulate a three stage haulage situation which suggests the need to differentiate station levels by type numbers. These are: a) TYPE 1 stations - mine cars are loaded here; b) TYPE 2 stations - intermediate stop and storage for mine cars; c) TYPE 3 stations - all mine cars that are stored here leave mine; and d) TYPE 4 stations - mine portal. TYPES 1, 2, and 3 have all loaded cars assigned to an ascending TYPE as their next destination. In input, if single stage haulage is designated, TYPES 1 and 3 do not exist, and if two stage haulage is called for, TYPES 2 and 3 are absent. "In Part 1 of this paper, published in the August 1995 issue of Natural Resources Forum, a review of several mining disasters around the world established the complex nature of their causation and their catastrophic effects. The involvement of human beings, either through acts of commission or omission, was highlighted. In Part 2, a discussion of the various approaches to disaster control, mostly as practised in the USA, is presented. A systems approach to disaster prevention incorporating elements of hazard identification, mine design, emergency response and post-emergency audit is presented.In the USA the role of government in the affairs of its citizens is continually growing. This role is intended to ensure an unimpeded pursuit of happiness and prosperity by the population and to curtail actions which are restrictive or harmful to the citizenry. The passage of a legislation is an indication that it has been decided through the established process that the activities covered by the legislation should receive appropriate consideration. The enactment of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (The 1969 Coal Act), the Mine Safety and Health Amendment Act of 1977 (The 1977 Mine Act) and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (The 1977 Surface Mining Act), was specifically intended to further the role of government in the health, safety and environmental affairs of the mineral industry.Currently, the federal government's responsibilities for mine safety and health are divided among three agencies: the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the US Department of Labor, the Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the US Department of the Interior and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (National Research Council, 1981). MSHA is responsible for issuing and enforcing mine safety and health regulations, for training miners and for responding to mine emergencies. The Bureau of Mines is responsible for conducting research on mine safety and on the technological means for reducing health and safety hazards in mines. NIOSH conducts research relating to miner health, and together with MSHA, tests and certifies devices used to detect hazardous materials in mines and protective equipment used by miners. NIOSH also plays a public health role in that its activities in mining include health hazard evalua¬tions, general mining surveillance as mandated by law and medical surveillance including coal miner X-ray and autopsy programmes. MSHA shares with the Bureau of Mines the responsibility for integrating R&D results into operational practice. MSHA implements R&D results either by incorporating them into its own operations or by rule making that requires new practices or equipment to be adopted by the mining industry. In many instances, the Bureau's R&D results have been adopted by the mining industry without rule making."

During 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 19,700 acres that included the Fish Creek Mountains WSA (Wilderness Study Area), 15 miles southwest of the Salton Sea. Two United States Gypsum Co. claim groups in the WSA have more than .20 million tons of inferred gypsum reserves. These high-grade, surface and near-surface gypsum deposits are an extension of a gypsum bed that has been mined continuously since 1922. The Waters prospect in the central part of the WSA has large quantities of limestone suitable for many commercial uses. Sand and gravel is plentiful in the WSA in alluvial fan and ancient shore-line deposits. Limestone and alluvial deposits are not economic because similar material is closer to potential markets. No evidence of energy minerals or geothermal resources was identified in the WSA. A portion of the eastern Fish Creek Mountains WSA is leased for oil and gas exploration. United States Gypsum Co. holds eighteen unpatented placer claims in the northwestern part of the WSA. No other mining claims or mineral leases were identified in the study area. No mineral production is known from within the WSA.
