The Bureau of Mines investigated flotation methods for recovering fluorite and byproducts from two samples of the Fish Creek deposit in Eureka County, NV. The preferred method for tre.ating a fluorite-beryllium sample included (1) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (2) desliming at 20 um, (3) muscovite flotation, (4) silicate flotation, (5) sodium hypochlorite wash of silicate concentrate, and (6) beryllium rougher and cleaner flotation from the silicate concen-trate. Laboratory results showed that over 94 pct of the fluorite was recovered in a recleaner concentrate containing 98 pct CaF2, Beryllium flotation produced concentrates containing in excess of 5 pct BeO with recoveries over 70 pet. The preferred method used for a fluorite-mica sample consisted of (1) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (2) desliming at 20 um, and (3) mica flotation using an anionic-cationic collector system. Laboratory results showed that 84 pct of the fluorite was recovered in a recleaner concentrate containing 96 pct CaF2, Mica flotation produced a concentrate containing 95 pct mica at 85-pct recovery.

"Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM. These data indicate that PAF can affect the secretory activity of pulmonary phagocytes and the ability• of type II cells to detoxify foreign compounds (Bureau of Mines Grant - G1175142).INTRODUCTIONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acetylsn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to Mediate a broad range of biological activities (1-3). Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue (4), secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytes (5), airway constriction (6), pulmonary edema (7), and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (8,9).PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin (10-13). Therefore, PAP may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of PAF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type II epithelial cells."

Because several new and unusual synthetic minerals were found in the system MgO-MgF₂ - SiO2 with Li * , or Nat a similar system with Geo₂ replacing Sio , plus Lit was investigated . In addition to the expected compounds of germanium , Ge - fluor - hectorite and a Ge - fluor- chrysotile were synthesized . Protoamphibole was not observed . Data are given for 69 compositions prepared in the system MgO- MgF₂ - Ge02 at 6.94 percent LiF .

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, ore-dressing tests were made on three samples procured by Bureau of Mines engineers from two properties in southeastern Juah County, Utah, each of which is known by the name Black Jack. To avoid confusion, the tests will be described under the names of the owners Kendall-Duvall and the Empire Mines.None of the samples were amenable to ore dressing for the production of high-grade manganese sinter.Ores from the Kendall-Duvall deposit represent an interesting metallurgical phase of low-grade manganese occurrence, as the occurrence of manganese as silicate (braunite) automatically governs the extent to which they can be beneficiated by mechanical methods of treatment. As less than 50 percent of the total manganese was recoverable by complex methods of treatment in a 40- percent-manganese sinter, attempts were made to recover most of the manganese in a low-calcite, intermediate-grade product that might be acceptable for subsequent metallurgical treatment. By selective flotation of calcite and manganese, up to 68 percent recoveries were obtained in plus 20-percent manganese products..No encouragement can be given for successful ore-dressing of Empire ores as represented by samples received for testing, as no products were obtained that would meet minimum marketing specifications. Empire ore contained only 1 percent lime and might be high enough in grade (19 percent manganese) for direct hydrometallurgical treatment."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale beneficiation tests on a sample of corundum gneiss from Montana to devise a method for beneficiating corundum for use as a substitute for refractory-grade bauxite. A flotation process utilizing petroleum sulfonate as the collector in an acid circuit was devised. Results showed that two flotation schemes each produced a concentrate exceeding the national stockpile specifications for calcined bauxite. From a feed containing 28 pct corundum concentrates containing up to 92.5 pct alumina (A1203) were produced with a corundum recovery of 78.5 pct.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. Magnetic susceptibilities were determined by the Bureau of Mines fur 19 cobalt- and nickel-bearing minerals and for a suite for synthetic cobalt-nickel diarsenides analogous to the rammelsbergite and safflorite series. Relations between susceptibility and composition were found to be nonlinear for both impure natural minerals and pure synthetics.

The Hopper-Feeder-Bolter (HFB) is a prototype multifunctional machine designed to improve productivity by minimizing continuous miner place changes. It is designed primarily to work beside a two-pass continuous miner, bolting on one side and then place changing to bolt the other side while simultaneously providing a surge car and lump breaker located directly behind the continuous miner. Surface testing was conducted at the Bureau of Mines Mine Equipment Test Facility (METF) to evaluate overall system performance and reliability. Tests were conducted to evaluate place changing, tramming, lump breaking, roof bolting, drawbar pull, conveying, temporary roof-support (TRS) capacity, lighting, and noise. Surface test results indicate the HFB is ready to be tested and evaluated underground in a production mode.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of research to develop a process for recovering additional beryllium from a commercial mill waste product, fluoferrate leach residue. Forty-five percent of the total beryllium in the leach residue was recovered in a beryllia product assaying over 98 pct Be0 by a process comprising (1) leaching with 1 N sulfuric acid, (2) adjusting the acidity of the leach liquor to pH 2, (3) extracting the beryllium with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (EHPA), (4) stripping the loaded extract with sodium hydroxide solution, (5) boiling the sodium beryllate strip solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide, and (6) calcining the beryllium hydroxide. Calculated reagent requirements per pound of Be° recovered by a proposed flowsheet were 28.1 lb sulfuric acid, 0.04 lb flocculent, 0.15 lb EHPA, 0.06 lb isodecanol (IDA), 0.22 gal kerosine, and 6.3 lb sodium hydroxide.

Blast induced stress waves, propagating along the surface of a drift of an underground hardrock mine, were recorded and analyzed. Resistance strain gages, accelerometers and a velocity pickup were used in making the measurements. Although a full face blast was recorded, the stress waves were initiated by single borehole blasts for the majority of the project. A special instrument trailer was designed, constructed and utilized during the project. A reliable strain wave transducer was developed for measuring the stress waves propagating on the drift surface. A correlation study between strain and acceleration signals for P-waves was made which agreed well with theory. The use of stemming was found to reduce strain and acceleration magnitudes as predicted.

The Explosives Division of the United States Bureau of Mines makes certain laboratory and field investigations that deal with explosions, explosives, ignition, and combustion, together with many related problems, such as the cause and prevention of fires, and certain fundamental scientific questions bearing upon the determination of the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying some of the important phenomena encountered. Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. This paper reports experimental determinations by the Bureau of Mines of compressibility factors to 4,000 pounds per square inch absolute (p.s.i.a.) for helium at temperatures from -10° to 130° F. and for 16 helium-nitrogen mixtures at 70° F. This information is needed for computing accurate discharge volumes and is necessary for determining an average-density value for use in orifice-meter formulas. In thermodynamic calculations, several functions of the compressibility factor with pressure and temperature are required. The data in the original publications (6, 8)5 of this study have been reexamined and have been given a more comprehensive treatment. The recalculated compressibility factors are higher by approximately 0.2 percent because in the earlier work a linear relationship between the compressibility factor of helium and pressure was assumed.

Viable domestic mineral industries are essential to the economic health of the United States and the well-being of its citizens. The charts in this publication reflect developments significant to the Nation's mineral industries during 1975. Last year was a year of reduced activity for the Nation's mineral industries. Although the value of the country's total mineral output rose, for example, the overall production and use of many minerals fell. At the same time, the industry experienced lower profits and higher debt/equity ratios. These and other adverse effects on many segments of the Nation's mineral industries resulted from the overall decline in domestic and international economic activity.

This report contains information on the cells or containers used to hold a known small depth (usually 1 mm. or less) of the dust-containing liquid from impinger, 5/6/ filter-paper,7/ and other samples collected from the air while the particles revealed by a microscope (equipped with a 16-mm., 0.25- or 0.50-N. A. objective and ordinarily used with axial light-field illumination) are counted in order to obtain an index of the concentration of dust in the sampled air. Information is given on such subjects as the kinds of cells available, kinds used, actual depths of cells, and construction of simple, inexpensive cells. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Ketchem Dome tin prospect in east-central Alaska to evaluate the tin resource. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration of the tin-bearing minerals. The tin mineralization consists of cassiterite (Sn02), which occurs as grains disseminated in a greisen (quartz-mica) matrixo A bulk sample from the largest and best-developed greisen vein exposed at Ketchem Dome contained 0.51 pct Sn. Concentration of the cassiterite by gravity table methods resulted in a product that contained 56 pct of the tin at a grade of 41.4 pct Sn. The mineralization exposed at Ketchem Dome is typical of greisen found in the area and elsewhere in interior Alaska.

The basic mining law of Cuba is contained in the basic Spanish mining decree having the effect of law December 29 , 1868. This legislation has remained substantially unchanged , with the exception of a few minor administrative changes made by the present Government . These changes provide for the register of mines , oil wells , and operations of such nature , and also provide for the keeping of records showing the value of minerals taken out . By Royal decree of April 17 , 1883 , the law of mines enacted for the Peninsula ( Spain ) on July 6 , 1859 , and the General Bases of December 29 , 1868 , were declared in force in Cuba . In order to encourage the mining of iron org , in 1883 the Crow of Spain issued a royal decree to the following effect.

This report describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Samples of coals from Upper and Lower Freeport and Upper and Lower Kittanning beds having estimated minable reserves of 50-million tons or more were studied by the Bureau of Mines. Cambria County coals rank either as medium-or low-volatile bituminous. A preparation study indicated that all coals tested in this county, except one sample from the Lower Freeport bed, were responsive to cleaning and would yield a product with satisfactory chemical properties for metallurgical coal. All coals tested from Cambria County yielded strong coke; however, they expand excessively when carbonized singly, and should be used only as minor constituents in metallurgical coking blends when carbonized in slot-type ovens.

The heat contents of the sesquioxides of erbium, holmium, thulium, and ytterbium (Er203, Ho203, Tm203, and Yb203) in the cubic crystalline form were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. The erbium and holmium sesquioxides gave regular heat content-temperature curves. Thulium sesquioxide had a minor thermal anomaly near 1,680° K, with a heat absorption of 310 cal/mole; similarly, ytterbium sesquioxide had a minor anomaly near 1,365° K, with a heat absorption of 150 cal/mole. The heat content results are presented in both tabular form (at 100° intervals) and in algebraic form. Entropy increments, corresponding to the tabulated heat content results, also are listed.

This Bureau of Mines study reviews current and proposed methods of extracting copper from sub-mill-grade ore by leaching. The amount of copper produced by hydrometallurgy has increased dramatically in recent years and will probably be about 200,000 tons per year by 1970.
