THIS SUMMARY appears in Minerals Yearbook volumes I and III, which cover mineral production in the United States, its island possessions, the Canal Zone, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as the principal minerals imported into and exported from the United States. The several commodity and area chapters contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operatons at or near mines.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). This survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of the methane emission and control problem in U.S. bituminous coal mines. The resultant data indicate that the emission rate for any given coalbed depends primarily on the coal production rate and on mine depth, as well as on the nature of the coalbed and the surrounding strata. An excellent correlation was found between (1) the methane emission rate and (2) the product of coal production rate and mine depth for the mines in the Pittsburgh, Pocahontas Nos. 3 and 4, and the Illinois Nos. 5 and 6 coalbeds. The highest total emission rates found in U.S. bituminous coal mines were as follows, in million cubic feet per day: Monongalia County, W. Va., 39; Marion County, W. Va., 30.4; McDowell County, W. Va., 13.1; Washington County, Pa., 11.9; Greene County, Pa., 11.4; Buchanan County, Va., 21.6; Jefferson County, Ala., 10.3; and Franklin County, Ill., 6.6.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Coaxial cable structures form the subject of substantial theoretical and experimental investigations either directly related, or which can be extrapolated, to the communications needs and environments of U.S. coal mines. Communication systems based on "guided" waves, of which "leaky" coaxial cables are one implementation, are attractive candidates for providing a range of communication functions primarily along haulage ways, and possible also within sections up to the working face. (However, there are still strong reservations as to whether a practical coaxial cable sys tem could provide sufficient communications coverage within a section. ) In this Part, we present the results of some theoretical calculations of the performance of leaky coaxial cable communication systems. We also analyze the applicability of the theoretical and experimental results obtained by other researchers to the needs of U.S. coal mines. In particular, this investigation has been focused on the utility of relatively low cost, conventional, flexible, coaxial cable at frequencies covering the LF through HF bands and extending into the lower part of the VHF band, as opposed to relatively high cost, special semi-rigid, coaxial cable* at frequencies in the VHF and UHF bands. There are three major design alternatives for coaxial cable communication systems considered in this chapter: • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with high surface transfer impedance (holes in outer conductor, e.g., braid construction). • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with repeaters (U.K. experiments). • No base station, direct communication via a coaxial cable with periodic radiative structures.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) literature on the nonmetal binary and ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements, with emphasis directed to the following nonmetals: B, C, N, O, and Si. This review examines each of these binary and selected ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements as coatings and gives some of their preparative methods, uses, and properties. A total of 259 references were found for these compounds of the nine elements. This review was utilized in the Bureau's research to provide abrasion-, erosion-, and corrosion-resistant coatings in order to conserve critical metals and protect various metallic surfaces in metallurgical, mining, and energy conversion systems.

This Part describes a mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect sys tem that permits mine paging telephones to be selectively interconnected with the public telephone system, as illustrated by Figure 1. This interconnect concept was first conceived and demonstrated in breadboard form by H. E. Parkinson of Industrial Hazards and Communications, PMSRC, as one means for providing improved emergency and off-hours communications. The third-generation prototype unit described in this Part was designed and fabricated by Arthur D. Little, Inc. This unit is a small desk-top or wall-mounted unit that connects directly to both the public telephone line and the mine pager phone line, and requires no modifications to either the public dial telephone or mine pager phones. As part of this task, ADL also built, under a very compressed time schedule, a second-generation prototype unit suitable for reliable demonstration of the interconnect concept during the Bureau's technology transfer seminar on mine communications in March 1973. * A major objective of the design of the third-generation unit described in this Part was that it be compatible with present mine pager phone systems utilizing DC voltage on the mine phone line to activate the phone loudspeakers. Therefore, this unit was designed to operate in a push- to-talk, push-to-listen mode that accommodates the inherent design differences and operation modes of the mine phones of different manufacturers. Though this push- to- talk, push- to-listen mode of operation may seem slightly unusual at first sight, we have found it is easily learned by new users. However, mine phone manufacturers wishing to expand their product lines with such an interconnect system will probably find it to their advantage to customize the design of this system to their particular mine phones, thereby utilizing the unique attributes offered by their individual product lines. This customization should not be difficult, and Section III below suggests some of the features that can be easily added to future designs. Detailed parts lists and circuit schematics for the present third-generation proto- type system can be obtained from the system manual submitted to PMSRC and placed on public file.

Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state. Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick's law. The free gas occurs in the fracture system and flows according to Darcy's law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. 1.1 BACKGROUND In many underground coal mining operations the use of electromagnetic field equipment, particularly communication systems, not only increases the overall efficiency of the mining operation but can be directly linked with mine safety considerations. The use of electromagnetic field producing equipment in underground coal mining operations can only be expected to grow. Several new communication systems have already been proposed. In addition, high-frequency producing equipments for many diverse uses in mining operations are under study. The use of these equipment in underground mining operations is hampered by the possibility of their electromagnetic fields interacting with the electric blasting cap operations commonly carried out in the mines. Such interactions can have at least two results bearing directly on mine safety: o premature initiation of the cap, either in its normal shot location or during hookup or transportation; o dudding of the cap so that normal firing operations do not cause irritation; thereby leaving unexploded high explosives after normal firing. Since the consequences of a premature initiation could, particularly in coal mines operations, result in catastrophe involving human life, the overall approach to prediction of possible hazard must be, as far as possible, of a "worst case" nature. Carbonate minerals constitute a major fraction of the oil shale in Colorado's Green River Formation. Quantification of carbonate minerals is important for the characterization of oil shale, particularly because of their thermal activity in production of oil from shale. The carbonate minerals found in this oil shale are nahcolite (NaHCO3), dawsonite [NaA1(OH)2CO3], dolomite [(Mg1-xFx)Ca(CO3)2], calcite (CaCO3), and ferroan [(Mg1-xFex)CO3]. Although carbonate minerals can be removed by acid extraction from the balance of the oil shale, direct determination of carbonate minerals is complicated by the occurrence of the same cations in more than one mineral. A method for assigning the acid-soluble cations to the individual carbonate minerals was developed from two assumptions based on oil shale geochemistry: (1) Calcite and ferroan do not occur together, and (2) the ratio of iron and magnesium is the same in dolomite and ferroan. These assumptions were tested by the Bureau of Mines by applying the technique for assigning cations to 219 samples from the saline section of the formation. The reported carbonate mineral amounts were compared statistically with X-ray diffraction peak heights, verifying the cation assignment method.

Physical beneficiation, leaching, and solvent extraction investigations were made to recover a high-grade thorium oxide product from Bald Mountain, Wyo., conglomerate. The monazite in the Bald Mountain deposit contains 8.8 percent Th02 and, therefore, is higher in thorium content than the usual domestic or foreign monazite. A sample of composited drill cuttings for the study contained 4.3 pounds of monazite per ton of are. The work showed that the monazite, although unusually fine grained and friable, could be concentrated by tabling and magnetic treatment to yield a product assaying 5.65 percent Th02 with a recovery of 61 percent of the thorium. Subsequent decomposition of the concentrate by treatment with sulfuric acid and solvent extraction of the resultant solution with a primary aliphatic amine yielded a thorium oxide product of 99-percent grade.

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

"INTRODUCTION The producing iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette and Menominee in Michigan, the Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. The accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year owing to stockpiling underground ore during the winter, or nonshipping, season but closely approximate each other over a period of years. This information circular supplements, combines, and continues the data contained in Information Circulars 7321 3/ and 7410 4/, including statistics for 1946 and 1947.Whereas the title ""Accident Experience"" is used for uniformity and logical indexing throughout this report, ""injury"" will be used as a general term to apply to disabilities of all degrees.During the 8-year period 1940 to 1947, inclusive, 619,054,023 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 5/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 117,828,939 tons, or 19.03 percent of the total, and employed approximately 9,260 men. Minnesota shipped 501,225,084 tons, or 80.97 percent of the total, and employed an approximate annual average of 12,260 men. The tons produced and shipped per man employed in Minnesota is much greater than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

The characteristics of gas-phase detonations were observed in 20 instrumented firings within earthen tunnels, in 100 such detonations in a 24-in-diam by l63-ft-long steel pipe, and in about 200 smaller scale firings. Most of the fuels studied were representative hydrocarbons--acetylene, propane, gasoline, and a roughly equimolar mixture of methylacetylene, propadiene, and propane. In a pipe with two closed ends, the detonable limits were demonstrated to be very nearly the same as reported limits of flammability. The side-on impulses (pressures integrated over 200-msec intervals) were shown to be the same function of concentration regardless of whether deflagration or detonation had occurred. In a pipe with only the initiation end closed, the impulses of all fuel-air systems tended toward the same level when averaged over comparable ranges of fuel concentration; the lower pressures with saturated hydrocarbons were nearly compensated by longer durations of pressure transient. In all fuel-air systems, unexpectedly high impulses were obtained with slightly lean mixtures. In earthen confining structures, the impulse, of the explosion was efficiently converted into momentum of the failing wall. In the configurations studied, an earth velocity of about 20 fps was critical to overcome the soil's resistance to shear. The destructive effect was determined by gas pressure rather than by total energy release. The assignment of a "TNT equivalent" to an explosive gas mixture is discussed in terms of the confinement of the mixture.

Underground coal mining operations in the United States continue to increase productivity as mining equipment and practices are improved. Unfortunately, increased production also results in the potential for increased respirable dust generation and worker exposure. In response, US operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and looking to emerging technologies in an effort to better control respirable dust levels. Ventilating air and water sprays remain the basis of dust control strategies for both longwall and continuous mining operations, and the level of application for these controls continues to increase. In addition, new technologies are emerging that have the potential to further reduce dust levels. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research into methods to optimize existing control technologies and evaluate emerging control technologies. This paper will summarize control technologies routinely being used in underground coal mine operations, as well as provide a review of new controls that are being pursued.

"INTRODUCTION Oxygen, because of its vital relationship to man's physical well being, is the most important chemical_ element. It may be breathed, however, only in a rather limited range of concentrations and pressures without producing ill effects. An excess of oxygen may be equally as harmful as too little of it. Because of the importance of these effects, the study of the physiological action of oxygen has received attention for many years and by many investigators. Much of the investigative work has been directed toward determining the limits within which oxygen in abnormal concentrations and at abnormal pressures may be breathed with safety in such applica¬tions as deep-sea diving, work in comprossod-air, aviation, the wearing of apparatus designed to permit entrance into irrespirable atmospheres, and in the therapeutic applications of the medical profession.The Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information on the effects of breathing essentially pure oxygen, because of the Bureau's association with the use of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus for entering irrespirable mine atmospheres, and the use of oxygen in conjunction with artificial respiration as a moans of resuscitation. The purpose of this paper is to summarize briefly the effects upon the human body of the inhalation of oxygen in various concentrations and at various pressures and to give reference to other published information that deals in greater detail with the diverse phases of the subject. The literature in this field is voluminous; therefore, a complete bibliography has not boon presented in this paper. No paper on this subject would be complete without reference to the classic pioneering work of Paul Bert (1) 3/ in this field. Articles such as those of Stadia, Riggs, and Haugaard (2), Bean (3), Specht (4), and others cited contain extensive lists of references that will leadthe reader to information in a degree of detail that is not within the scope of this publication."

This Bureau of Mines report proposes a new methodology for estimating industrial dust explosion hazards in terms of three probabilities or co-factors: The dispersion of the dust, the existence of a flammable dust concentration, and the presence of an effective source of ignition. This method or rationale is proposed as a replacement for the "explosibility index" that was first suggested 25 yr ago, but which, by consen-sus among leading researchers in the field, is now outdated. This report presents a detailed critique of the deficiencies of that old, material-oriented index, and develops the logical rationale for its re-placement by an approach that is better suited for quantitative hazard evaluations. A variety of such evaluations are illustrated, which show how a quantitative prediction of explosion frequencies can be obtained from laboratory measurements and operating conditions in a given indus-trial facility. The method has some pitfalls, particularly as they re-late to the correlation of events or their randomness. These are discussed, as well as the method's other limitations and uncertainties. This work is intended to provide a beginning to a quantitative approach to explosion hazard assessment. To that end, a new method is proposed for estimating thermal ignition probabilities in terms of the measured laboratory autoignition temperature of a dust, its relationship to the operating temperature, and its distribution within a given industrial system.

Demand for energy in the United States in 1965 was stimulated by the continuing expansion of the economy. A gain of 5.9 percent in gross national product for the year was accompanied by a 4.4-percent rise in energy consumption. Domestic energy resources met about 93 percent of the nation's requirements. The remaining 7 percent consisted of imported fuels, mainly of crude petroleum and residual fuel oil. The major fossil fuels-natural gas, crude petroleum, and coal, in that order-contributed 96 percent of all commerical energy utilized, with the balance of 4 percent being primary electricity from hydropower and nuclear power plants. Production was up for all of the major mineral energy resources in 1965, with the single exception of anthracite, output of which continued to decline. Bituminous coal output for the year was 512 million tons; marketed production of natural gas, 16,039 billion cubic feet; and crude petroleum output, 2,848 million barrels. Among the secondary products processed from primary energy resources, the most significant gains were in coal carbonized for coke which increased 6.7 percent to 95 million tons, and in the output of liquefied gases from natural gas which rose 4.8 percent to 11,257 million gallons (268 million barrels). Within the latter category, the off? take for petrochemical feedstocks continued to rise at a very rapid pace.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations.
