A model has been developed for sensitivity analysis of open pit bench blasting. The model simulates the cost effectiveness of various blasting designs in relation to the equipment used for drilling, loading, hauling and primary crushing. The simulations will give an indication of the optimum powder factor giving the lowest over-all costs for drilling, blasting, handling and crushing.

A large open-cast limestone mine had its blasting operations severely restricted by the imposition of limiting PPV levels to protect a water pipe-line passing through the mine property. Attempts were made to measure the strains induced in the pipe by ground vibrations, so that a less restrictive blasting limitation could be established on a scientific basis.

The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surfaced underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material.

During the spring and summer of 1993 the largest pipeline in Tennessee was installed as part of the upgrading of Nashville's sewage needs through the year 2035. This new 3.3 million dollar outfall project is able to carry 330 million gallons of treated sewage water daily. Special projects required special equipment as this project was safely and quickly installed.

A computer program called Seiswise that predicts the character and intensity of ground vibration generated by surface blasting operations was developed and field tested. The program uses the time histories of one or more pilot shots in combination with various initiation sequences to construct synthetic seismograms which are examined to select designs that will produce low levels of ground vibration.

In 2019, the Bingham Canyon Mine, owned by Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper Company, mined through the active underground that dewaters the pit. The active underground required the limitation of vibrations to avoid catastrophic damage or damage that would require work to the shotcrete and additional roof support. The surface design of the current sector was mined next to and through portions of the active underground.

Being prepared to speak to the complainant, and having a good idea of what you should say, or what NOT to say, may affect the evolution, and eventual resolution of the complaint. In this system for connecting blasting caps to the initiation source, the need for a redundant design structure provides more reliable method of explosive initiation. This is accomplished by using a complete system starting at the blasting control, through the initiation line structure through the initiation line and connecting blocks to the blasting cap. The connecting structure between the initiation device and the blasting caps may be connecting blocks or other means.
