Thanks to Doi-moi (renovation) policy, many great bridges were constructed in Vietnam to meet demands of her booming economy in the recent decade and deep foundation structures were the only alternatives for the foundations of these great bridges. The deep foundation structures were constructed by modern technologies and almost of all these deep foundation structures were designed by foreign companies and carried out by Vietnamese workers and engineers under supervision of foreign experts. Beside successes, there were several failure cases in which the collapse of temporary scaffolding system of Can-tho Cable ? Stayed Bridge due to settlement of its pile foundation killing 54 workers and seriously injuring 80 other workers was the most serious. This paper introduces construction techniques of the deep foundation structures applied to building of great bridges in Vietnam recently. It will especially focus on two failure cases: 1) collapse of temporary scaffolding system of Can-tho Cable ? Stayed Bridge due to settlement of its pile foundation and 2) failure of drilled shaft foundation of Thanh-tri bridge due to poor construction technique and management. These two failure cases were greatly concerned by both bridge specialists and the public. Reasons of and lessons from these two failure cases will be carefully discussed. From the two failure cases, this paper will draw some lessons that should be important issues to be seriously paid attention when designing and constructing deep foundations in Vietnam.

"Mass stabilization (MS) is a ground improvement technique that can prepare areas of low bearing strength soil for subsequent infrastructure development. The technique involves mixing binding agents such as portland cement, fly ash, slag, or lime into the subject soil while the soil remains in-place (insitu). The binders “cement” the soil grains together to form a cement modified soil or a soil cement. The MS-treated area now has improved bearing capacity to support infrastructure or to prevent movement of the material such as landslides.The same insitu soil mixing technique can be used to address contaminated areas. Binders or reagents are mixed into soil. The treatment protects human health and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within the treated material. When used for the purpose of environmental remediation the technology is called Insitu Solidification/Stabilization (ISS).Both Mass Stabilization and ISS treatments require laboratory studies to develop a mix design of soil and binder(s) that produce the desired physical and/or chemical properties. The mix design is then transferred into the field. Successful MS and ISS treatments rely on reproduction at full-scale of the mix design and the thorough mixing attained at laboratory scale. Fifty to 70% of the cost of a MS or ISS project is in the cost of the binding agent that is to be mixed into the subject soil. Under-dosing, overdosing, non-thorough mixing, and mixing in the wrong areas all create cost over-runs.This paper will discuss recent innovations in mass stabilization systems that improve the cost effectiveness of the treatment technology. Specialized equipment can impart greater mixing shear thus improving the thoroughness of mixing. Dry powder pressure feeders can conserve the “drying capacity” of binder resulting in higher strengths at lower binder dosages. Global Positioning System (GPS)-based systems can guide the mixing operator for complete mixing coverage. An integrated tracking and feeding system can record that proper dosing and mixing was accomplished and generate construction QA/QC reports for the client.INTRODUCTIONNew or expanding infrastructure projects may encounter areas of low bearing capacity soil or areas where marginal materials such as waste, dredged material, or sediment have been placed. Mass stabilization is a geotechnical method that can be used to improve the bearing capacity or stiffness of soil. Mass stabilization involves mixing binding agents into soil subject to treatment while the soil remains in-place or insitu.Mass stabilization technique can also address contaminated soil therefore, the same technique can be used to attain both civil and environmental engineering goals. In this environmental application the technology is known as insitu solidification/stabilization (ISS). ISS protects human health and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within the treated material."

Drilled displacement (DD) piles often develop significantly larger unit shaft resistance values than other drilled or augered pile systems in coarse grained materials. Minimal vibration and limited spoil development are also associated with DD pile installation and these factors are frequently additional financial and/or environmental benefits of the system. The application of DD piles in North America dates to the mid-1990s and their use in the Midwestern United States has been significant, particularly in the past 10 years. The authors have collected an extensive database of DD pile performance in the United States. The alluvial and glacial deposits of the Midwestern U.S. provide conditions where drilled displacement piles perform very efficiently when compared to coastal and residual geologies. This paper presents a summary of the authors? experience regarding installation and performance of DD piles in the Midwestern U.S. Information presented includes summary presentations of DD performance across a range of site conditions as well as a discussion of the relationship of DD performance and installation effort in the Midwest as compared to other geologic settings in the U.S.

The more widespread use of Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) Piles has generated increased demand for improved quality control measures. These deep foundation elements are often relatively long and slender and their structural quality depends on the experience of the installers, the adequacy of their drilling and pumping equipment, and of course, the properties of the soil. Since the concrete of ACIP piles is pumped under pressure into the borehole, the piles may achieve a very high unit shaft resistance if conditions are favorable and the piles are well constructed. Three types of methods can help assure that the piles are properly executed. During construction, monitoring the volume of concrete pumped and the pressure applied helps avoid structural defects. After installation, and once the concrete has hardened, the Pulse Echo Method allows for a check of the structural integrity of the shaft. Finally, a load test, performed some time after installation, yields a check of both bearing capacity and structural integrity of an individual pile. Because of their expense and associated construction delays, static load tests are normally done for only a few piles. However, at large construction sites, it may be necessary to perform many load tests either as a planned construction control activity or as a means of spot checking or verifying suspect piles. For smaller sites, however, static load testing may be prohibitively expensive. In such situations, dynamic load testing, originally developed for driven piles, has frequently been employed for drilled shafts and ACIP piles. In the latter case special consideration must be given to the ACIP pile slenderness and their often relatively low concrete design strength, which may not tolerate high dynamic loading stresses even though their unit resistance along the shaft is relatively high. Lately, the dynamic load test has become more feasible with the availability of loading systems that are custom tailored to this particular pile type. These systems produce a low velocity, low stress and high energy impact. Recent developments have also made the instrumentation process simpler: force measurements are now made on the ram rather than on the pile for increased reliability and simplicity. This presentation describes the requirements for successful dynamic load testing of auger cast piles and summarizes results from several projects where the new loading system and newly developed instrumentation was employed. A few cases are presented correlating static load test results with dynamic predictions, calculated by CAPWAP®.

Five trial piles were constructed during the trial pile programme for the Birmingham International Convention Centre. In addition, trial piles have been tested on two other sites in central Birmingham. Methods of pile construction were conventional sandstone rock sockets, sleeved piles and voided piles. The results of these load tests are compared with the theoretical predicted behaviour based on the results of unconfined compressive tests of rock core taken on the Convention Centre site and on other sites in the central Birmingham area. On the basis of this work, the various design procedures are discussed.

"In 2005, an inspection showed that the Deception Bay Wharf in the Canadian Arctic was at the end of its service life. Although Deception Bay is closed with landfast ice up to 5 ft thick, shipping operations continue year-round, with additional voyages in the summer open-water season to supplement mine supplies. The rehabilitation scheme that allowed minimal interruptions to shipping involved concrete caissons cast on barges and an ingenious placing system.WorleyParsons Westmar of Vancouver, B.C., performed the inspection under contract to the owner, Xstrata Nickel, Montreal, Quebec. The wharf, on the coast of the Nunavik region of Quebec, was originally constructed in 1971 for an asbestos mine, and is now used to support Xstrata’s Raglan nickel mine, importing fuel for p o w e r g e n e r a t i o n a n d general mine supplies, and exporting nickel concentrate to smelters in the south. Emergency repairs were essential to allow operations to continue at the site, while the parties considered permanent rehabilitation options and secured funding. The repairs were done in the openwater seasons, and included reinforcing the failed interlocks above water level with steel patch plates and injection grouting of the cell fill below the port crane in 2005. In 2006, workers installed a circumferential belting system below water level.Westmar held critical planning sessions with the mine operation personnel to find ways to stretch the limits of the mine supplies and nickel storage facilities. In the end, the parties agreed to shut down construction activities four times during the ice-free season to allow access to the dock site.Westmar developed a plan that allowed mine operations to continue during construction, and Xstrata approved the plan and budget in September 2006, for execution in 2007. Rapid construction was essential. To accommodate the short construction season and maintain minimum levels of service for the mine, the work was radically different from conventional Arctic deep-sea port construction. Like the original Deception Bay Wharf, construction practice was to use steel sheet pile circular cells with the consequential heavy support services for the labour force. Construction duration was typically two seasons. The plan for Deception Bay was executable in one season based on a concrete caisson structure. Only a modest amount of schedule float was needed."

The City of Grand Forks, North Dakota obtains drinking water from both the Red River and Red Lake River through a system of raw water intakes, shallow pipelines, and pump stations. However, during flood events, the City often loses access to the system, as evidenced during the record flood event in 1997. As a result, the City decided to construct a new gravity raw water intake system, including a pump station at the base of a 65-foot-deep, 60-foot-diameter caisson, behind a new levee system. Because of high design flood elevations and connectivity of river head to underlying soils, uplift resistance was required for the caisson. A total of 37, 2-foot-diameter, augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles were chosen to provide uplift resistance. Because of the difficulties associated with installation of piles within the confined space of the constructed caisson and basal stability concerns, installation was completed from the existing ground surface to a depth of 120 feet. Several design and construction issues arose, including squeezing ground during pile installation, placement of long reinforcing bars, and installation of a dual material pile. A dual material pile was required to ensure that the ACIP pile below the base of the caisson was structurally sound and the pile above the base of the caisson could be easily excavated during sinking of the caisson. This paper discusses the solutions to each of these issues, as well as construction sequencing, load testing and integrity testing of the ACIP piles, and the successful completion of the project.

"The proposed reconstruction of I-75 downtown consists of widening an approximately 2.46 Km section of IR-75 through the northern section of downtown Dayton, OH, USA. Bridge B-13 is a 9-span continuos prestressed concrete I-beam, 319.0-meter (1,048-foot) long bridge with a stub abutment on MSE walls for the rear abutment, and a stub abutment with spill-through slopes for the forward abutment. The piers in the river were located parallel to the Great Miami River, and are full-height reinforced concrete walls. PRESSUREMETER TEST PROCEDUREThe driller advanced either casing or augers approximately 1 meter above the pressuremeter test. Steel casing was used to advance borings performed in the river, and augers were used for borings on land. Mud rotary drilling with a large diameter roller bit was used to remove all of the gravel and cobble fragments inside the casing or augers.At the pressuremeter test elevation the driller used a 63.5-mm (2.5-inch) carbide button bi-cone bit, using a rotation rate of about 60 rpm, a mud fl ow rate of about 10 gallons per minute (40 liters per minute), and an advance rate of 6 to 10 minutes per meter (2 to 3 minutes per foot). To minimize vibrations, advance rates were slower where excessive cobbles were encountered. The 63.5-mm (2.5-inch) O.D. slotted casing pressuremeter was lowered to the test elevation, often requiring either pushing or hammering into the test zone. We believe that the test zone was not perfectly straight, or that gravel or cobble fragments jutted into the test zone and had to be displaced to advance the pressuremeter into the test zone. The slotted casing prevented membrane damage during insertion. A photograph of the slotted casing being lowered into the borehole is shown below.The pressuremeter was calibrated for system compressibility and membrane resistance. At full expansion of 800 cm3, the membrane resistance of the slotted casing was about 2.5 bars.Strain-controlled tests were performed using a Texam control unit with a monocell probe. Volume increments of 20 cm3 were injected into the probe and corresponding pressures were measured. Near the end of the elastic portion of the test, an unload-reload cycle was done. A creep test was performed for 10 minutes at the next volume increment. The test continued until either 800 cm3 were injected or the membrane burst."

"PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe R C Harris Filtration Plant underwent an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability consisting of a series of underground tanks within stepped excavations 12m (39 ft) and 10m (33 ft) deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts.Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the proximal front footing at 4mm (1/6 in), (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Through extensive Fast Lagrangian Analysis on Continua (FLAC) and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept and met deflection concerns.GEOTECHNIQUEThe hillside site drops 14.5m (47.6 ft) over a distance of 53m (174 ft) between the existing Filter Building on the north and the Services Building on the south. The soils adjacent to the Filter Building consist of 6m (20 ft) of sandy fills, to the footing elevation, over compact sands and layered dense sands and silts to a depth of 10m (33 ft) below existing footing. Beneath the silts lies a 10m (33 ft) thick stiff clayey silt, 2m (6.6 ft) of sandy silt till (containing cobbles and boulders) and an artesian gravelly sand at a total depth of 30m (98.5 ft).The tender information was deemed inadequate to accurately determine soil parameters for a finite element analysis. As a result, the design-build team performed pre-tender Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT), including dynamic analysis. The CPT data indicated stratigraphy consistent with the conventional bore hole exploration (SPT results) however, the CPT data provided consistently superior soil strengths. The CPT data indicated the sands and silts were dense to very dense throughout their full thickness. The clayey silts below the sands were found to have shear strengths in the 100 to 200 kPa (14.5 to 29 psi) range with an Over-Consolidation Ratio (OCR) ratio of 1.5 to 2. The dynamic analysis, while low strain, indicated very competent behavior with Young’s Modulus values in the 200 to 350 MPa (29,000 psi to 51,000 psi) range. The CPT derived shear moduli and OCR values were vital in determining the soil engineering parameters used for the FLAC analyses."

"The risk management in the case of liquefaction is one of the most serious and also difficult issues in geotechnical engineering because failure caused by liquefaction is always a sudden failure without ahead indication. For that reason ground improvement technologies for the prevention of liquefaction are necessary. The paper explains the responsible and effective risk management. Methods for the risk management and stabilizing the soil sustainably are described in detail.1. INTRODUCTIONDue to population growing more and more settlement area is needed, which is often including improper regions (e.g. mountain and coast regions) with raised risk of various kinds of disasters. But also in densely populated areas the risk of disasters like landslides can occur. One reason for the raising of risk in densely populated regions can be the opencast mining for raw material production. An essential element of the opencast mining is the loose deposition of the removed overburden, the so-called “overburden dump”. When an opencast mining is running out of the raw material, an opencast hollow remains in landscape. The slope areas of these hollows mostly consist of loose bedded material of the overburden dump. Due to the end of groundwater conservation these loose bedded slope areas are flooded. In consequence the slopes are in extreme danger of becoming liquefied. The result of a liquefaction in these slopes will unavoidably be a slope slide. Such a slope slide can extend up to several hundred meters into the landscape and can move several million cubic meters of material. An upsetting example for such a landslide is the slope failure in the German city of Nachterstedt on July, 18th 2009, which made necessitate remedial measures and also prevention works for the further utilisation of the region. The phenomena of liquefaction is not limited of slopes in series of opencast mining. Especially in regions with a highly appearance of earthquakes the phenomena of liquefaction is well known.2. RISK MANAGEMENTAn essential part for the stability assessment of slope systems is the investigation of sensitivity against liquefaction. In the case of given sensitivity against liquefaction there is no calculation method according to soil mechanics to determine the factor of safety against slope failure. Just for the case that sensitivity against liquefaction is not met, a comparison of the load (effect) E and the resistance R which is the traditional verification of stability against slope failure, can be calculated (Figure 1)."

This paper will describe the large caisson pier foundations for four of the bridges crossing the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area; and will discuss some of the unusual problems encountered during their sinking. Certain settlement phenomena experienced during their service life will also be related: The four bridges in order of their construction: The Huey P. Long Bridge, River Mile 106.1, completed in 1935 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No. 1, River Mile 96.0, completed in 1958 The Hale Boggs Bridge, River Mile 121.6, completed in 1983 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No. 2, River Mile 96.1, completed in 1988 Each of these bridges employed large open-dredged concrete caissons as foundations for one or more of the river piers, with the smallest being the 65ft by 102ft caissons for Piers I and II of the Huey P. Long Bridge and the largest being the 99ft by 214ft caisson for Pier II of the Greater New Orleans Bridge No. 2. The Huey P. Long caissons are founded in a dense fine sand at -170 while all of the other bridge caissons are founded in hard preconsolidated clay at elevations varying from -150 to -185. The Huey P. Long Bridge is currently being widened without increasing the caisson foundations under any of the river piers; and the design reasoning that led to this decision is presented.

"The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) uses a variation of the FHWA-modified Gates equation to verify the nominal pile bearing resistance, typically on smaller projects where static load tests and dynamic monitoring are not practical. An inconsistency in the resistance factors for load and resistance factor design (LRFD) penalizes the target pile capacity needed during field observation if the LADOTD dynamic formula equation is used, which is unreasonable, and has created confusion among designers, consultants, district personnel, and inspectors in Louisiana. The objectives of this project are to recalibrate the FHWA-modified Gates equation and update the associated LRFD resistance factor for pile types and local soil conditions encountered in Louisiana. Improved consistency relative to the current design approaches will be achieved if the updated resistance factor matches or exceeds the worst-case resistance factor used by LADOTD, which will reduce confusion among users. Updating the resistance factor will also serve to increase confidence in the FHWA modified Gates equation, optimize the efficiency of the piles, and reduce project costs.IntroductionThe original 1957 Gates pile driving formula (Gates, 1957) is an empirically derived dynamic formula that is used to predict pile capacity in the field during pile installation. The original Gates formula tends to over-predict pile capacity for low driving resistances and under-predict pile capacity for high driving resistances (Hannigan et al., 1998). Driving bridge foundation piles into glacio-fluvial sands and gravels and glacial tills brought surprisingly longer than predicted driving lengths on several recent projects in Vermont. In some instances, piles drove more than 40 feet past refusal depths predicted from Standard Penetration Resistances from borings terminating in glacial till. Overall, piles developed substantially less skin friction than predicted using common capacity formulas and drove as much as 80 feet longer than predicted in the moderate to dense gravelly and cobbly soils. These piles were driven for one to five span highway bridges within narrow valleys with bedrock ranging from 80 to over 200 feet deep. Piles were for both conventional and integral abutment bridges. H-piles were used for a variety of reasons including lower unit cost, better availability, and better ability to drive through cobbly soils in upper strata. Dynamic testing was used to evaluate capacity, including skin friction and end bearing capacity. In order to develop better pile length and capacity predictions for future projects, VTrans and one of their geotechnical consultants are collaborating to develop criteria for improved pile capacity predictions in these river valleys. We are doing this by evaluating driving and dynamic testing data from four projects in comparison with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) DRIVEN pile design software, and methods from Myerhof (1976) and Tomlinson (1981). Our overall objective is to provide a basis for choosing appropriate pile types and reliably estimating pile lengths for projects in this terrain. Bridge foundation design projects in other mountainous terrain share similar design and construction challenges to those encountered in these Vermont projects. These include: difficult exploration drill rig access requiring smaller rigs with limited capability to drill through cobbles and boulders deep enough to reach bedrock; limited experience with displacement piles as alternatives to H-piles in this geology; and relatively greater variability in soil stratigraphy between foundations at these sites as a consequence of the relatively high energy depositional environment in mountainous terrain. This paper presents the case history summaries of the pile driving, results of the ?back analysis? capacity evaluations, examples of solutions employed on these projects to address the lower capacities achieved, and resulting pile capacity design guidelines and prediction criteria for these geologic conditions based on data from these projects.

Konkan Railway Project is one of the most ambitious railway construction projects in India, involving construction of a 760.km long, Broad Gauge (1676 mm), single track railway line, connecting Roha in Maharashtra State with Mangalore in Kamataka State. The railway line travels along the Western Coast of Indian subcontinent, through states of Maharashtra (382 km), Goa (105 km) and Karnataka (273 km) (Fig.1). The project alignment traverses through one of the most formidable terrains ever encountered, in the history of railway construction in India. In the State of Goa only, railway alignment is crossing 6 major rivers Terekhol, Chapora, Mandovi, Zuari, Sal and Talpona. Zuari Railway Bridge (1305.6 m), Mandovi Railway Bridges (I and II) (1182.7 m) rank as 2nd and 3rd long bridges, (first longest bridge being Sharavati Bridge (2.2 km} at Honavar) which have been constructed on Konkan Railway. All these three bridges have been constructed by M/s.Asia Foundations and Constructions Ltd. (AFCONS). This paper presents, case history of construction of pile/caisson foundations for Zuari and Mandovi Bridges.

Helical piles are widely used as a foundation supporting a variety of different structures. Understanding the axial behaviour of helical piles is required to confirm the engineering design. Helical pile research is often conducted in the field, but this method can be prohibitively expensive in some cases. Geotechnical centrifuge modeling offers an alternative method for the helical pile research and practice. A series of axial load tests of helical piles installed into cohesive soils were conducted on the geotechnical centrifuge at the University of Alberta. The objective was to investigate the effects of inter-helix spacing and soil strength on the axial behaviour of helical piles. Four types of aluminum model helical piles including one single-helix pile and three double-helix piles with various inter-helix spacing ratios were tested. Both compressive and tensile loading tests were conducted. All model piles were instrumented with multiple strain gauge stations. The clay had an undrained shear strength of approximately 50 kPa and 120 kPa. The test results indicate that there is a transitional failure mode between the two widely recognized failure modes, i.e., individual plate bearing and cylindrical shearing. The shaft adhesion was significantly reduced by the helix. Axial capacities were comparable to the field test results.

A large scale piling work is undertaken in India for an important fast track industrial project. Thousands of solid square precast concrete piles are driven to depths of around 50m. Soils encountered are of alluvial origin with very soft clays varying in thickness from 10 to 18m at the top followed by medium dense to dense and occasionally very dense sand, stiff clay and finally dense to very dense sand layer as the founding layer. Recent site grading with around 4 metres thick hydraulically filled river sand necessitated driving the piles to the bottom sand layer to avoid problems on account of negative skin friction and to achieve optimum pile capacity. A process approach suggested by Bell et al (2002) to promote better understanding of the pile behaviour, pile capacity, and parameters assumed at design stage for static capacity and for wave equation analysis is followed with an aim to bring in effective economy in terms of pile length and pile installation speed. Soil investigation work is also undertaken in stages to cut down pile wastage. A judicious combination of PDA and static pile load tests is followed. Pile Driving Analyser (PDA) tests at end of driving and also at various stages of recovery of pile capacity are carried out to understand the pore pressure dissipation phenomenon. The paper attempts to present some of the valuable experiences that would go to establish precast pile as a very effective alternative to driven cast-in-situ piles and bored piles which are very common in this part of the world despite their limitations in terms of economy, speed and certain geotechnical aspects.

This paper presents full-scale instrumented pile static compressive and tensile load tests to be conducted in the area of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Thousands of piles have been installed to support the existing piers and wharves in the Pearl Harbor area. Due to the absence of bedrock within practical depths, most of the piles use combined friction and end bearing. A new 925 feet (282 meters) long and 50 feet (12 meters) wide reinforced concrete wharf supported on pile foundation is planned. This paper will present results of soil investigation, laboratory testing, dynamic load tests during indictor pile driving and static pile load tests. The subsurface conditions consist of soft harbor sediment, young alluvium deposit, volcanic tuff rock formation and stiff old alluvium deposit. The load test piles consist of 20-inch (508 mm) square and 24-inch (610 mm) octagonal pre-stressed, pre-cast concrete pile and instrumented with embedded strain gauges. The length of the piles ranges from about 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 meters). The test pile program consists of probing, driving indictor piles, dynamic load tests during indictor pile driving and static load tests. The standard loading procedure method was used during static pile load tests.

A Large Sub-structure with open top of S.Y.P. float line requires a 90m x 50m in plan and 13m-deep excavation in soft soil, Shanghai. The geological conditions in site are rather severe. The technology specifies that no permanent braces nor partition walls are allowed to be constructed inside. After a series of discussions the scheme of semi-gravity type cellular D-walling without any braces or earth anchors is finally adopted and successfully executed by SFEC. This paper deals with the technical problems in the design, construction and in-situ monitoring we met with in this difficult project.
