The paper presents a patented and copyright protected concept of constructing a shaft lining that goes through rock masses having strong rheological properties and being susceptible to leaching. In the case of salt layers, especially at significant depths (over 900 m) the relative convergence of the heading contour may amount to 40 ?/year. That results in the fact that any other method of securing the shaft lining, e.g. by making it flexible, will not be sufficient to ensure the stability of the shaft reinforcement geometry. In the new shaft lining concept the excessive rock creep into the outbreak inside the shaft diameter will be removed by local and controlled leaching of the shaft cheeks by means of fresh water directed through a porous medium at the contact layer behind the watertight tubing lining. The paper presents the structure of such a lining and an outline of the construction technology. In order to implement such a lining, a typical tubing will be applied. Separate design and manufacturing will be required for the technological rings used to control the leaching process behind the lining.

"Traditional techniques for valuing resource projects companies have been primarily based on discounted cashflow methods (DCF) or by comparison to similar projects with an apparent market capitalization. Many resource projects are really forms of options to invest rather than a future cashflow stream. Employing the DCF method to value a resource project which is really an option to invest, can dramatically underestimate the real value of the project. The analytical tools required to evaluate options, while more complicated than the usual spreadsheets used for DCF, are becoming more easily available and usable by managers. This paper will discuss the background of options valuation and some of the tools which will make it easier for managers to estimate the value of projects and companies which have significant real option values.ResumeBob McKnight is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Geological Engineering, supplemented by an MBA from Simon Fraser University. They were familiar to Roman and Phoenician traders who were shipping cargoes from Mediterranean seaports. In the financial world, options are types of contracts that generally include the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a share, currency or commodity. The underlying commodity price or share price changes are assumed to be lognormally distributed. In this context, options are of two general types, ""call"" options and ""put"" options. Call options have the characteristic of having the right to buy a tradable commodity or currency at a predetermined price for a specified period of time. For the owner of call options, they become more valuable as the price of the underlying commodity increases. For the seller of call options, these options become an increasing liability as commodity prices rise, since there is the obligation to sell the commodity at a predetermined (perhaps lower-than-market) price. This characteristic of call options recently became high profile with the sharp rise in gold prices last year. The value of gold call options sold by certain producers increased their associated liabilities to the point where margin calls were made."

It presents the origin of the furnace as well as the path of numerous changes and modifications both in technology and process introduced in the furnace in response to the production and cost-reduction challenges. The authors provide justification of the statement that continuous improvement of the "Polish" Flash Smelting Furnace has ranked it among the most modem smelting units in the world.

Introduction The ore deposit mined by Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is one of the numerous nickel-copper sulphide bodies marginal to the large oyster-shaped mass of differentiated norite in the Sudbury district, famous as the world's most important nickel producing field. The unique character of the ore deposits of the district has resulted in its intensive geological study over a period of more than fifty years. The results of these studies have given rise to a voluminous geological literature and to a great deal of controversy as to the genesis of the ores. This description of the structural geology at the Falconbridge mine is presented in the hope that it may form a small part of the chain of evidence leading to a reasonably satisfactory explanation of the ore genesis. The mine, named after Falconbridge township in which the deposit occurs, lies along the southeast margin of the norite mass which, however, is here concealed beneath a deep mantle of glacial sands and gravels averaging over 100 feet in thickness. As a consequence, the deposit was not discovered by the early prospectors, and it was not until 1916-17 that E. J. Longyear, of Minneapolis, located the ore by drilling. The discovery was foreshadowed in 1899 by the work of Thomas A. Edison, who found indications of the deposit by what is believed to have been a combination of magnetic and electrical geophysical surveys. He sank a prospect shaft over what has to date proven to be the largest and richest ore section in the mine. A wet quicksand layer at the rock surface proved impenetrable, however, and the "Edison' shaft never reached bed-rock.

"There is a widespread concern that certain of Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform proposals will likely lead to a significant decline in flow through funding after 1988. This does not bode well for the junior exploration sector, which relies heavily on flow-through to finance exploration programs. The exploration industry is actively pursuing various solutions to the problems posed by Tax Reform, in order to ensure that flow-through has a future.IntroductionWhile the proposals contained in Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform White Paper may not be as far-reaching as some people had expected, nevertheless the combination of the existing tax rules and proposed new rules offers sufficient complexity to keep pencils sharpened for many months. After having had an opportunity to study Tax Reform since June 18, 1987, the sharpened pencils are suggesting that the White Paper is not without its shortcomings and pitfalls. Insofar as the mineral exploration industry is affected, there is widespread concern that adoption of certain Tax Reform proposals could spell near disaster for mineral exploration in Canada. More specifically, there seems to be a consensus among the industry, as well as some federal and provincial government officials, that the announced phase-out of the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) would reduce the appeal of flow-through shares to the point where only a fraction of exploration funding would be financed in the future by flow-through."

"Low-pressure sodium light sources have been available for several years, but have not received wide acceptance in underground mining. This is because they are difficult to operate using DC power, they are not an intrinsically safe light where explosive gases may be encountered and they give poor colour rendition.With the need for energy conservation, several Canadian hard-rock metal mines are now changing their lighting to low pressure sodium, as it has the highest efficacy of any light source in terms of lumens per watt. Studies have pointed out several other advantages as well. Glare can be controlled, they penetrate fog well, they are easily maintained, they have a long life and they give the highest visual acuity when compared to other types of lighting. As well, in an underground mine, contrast is much more important than colour for task identification. For close work, the colour problem is alleviated with the use of cap lamps.Case studies are presented from Canadian practice. These show how the lights are modified for underground use, calculations preceding light installation, and how and where the lights are installed in the underground environment. Mention is made of worker reaction to the lights and possible physiological effects.IntroductionThe importance of good underground lighting to the total environment of mining cannot be overemphasized. In addition to the obvious benefits of improved worker morale, available studies show that good lighting practices reduce accident severity and frequency as well as increase production."

"IntroductionThe leaching method selected for the dissolving of uranium ore depends in part on the physical characteristics of the ore, as well as the uranium mineralization. There are two main methods of leaching employed in uranium circuits in North America, one being ""Carbonate Leaching"" on sandstone, and pitchblende type ores, and ""Acid Leaching"", on quartzite type ores.This chapter deals with the acid leaching of uranium ores found in the Elliot Lake area, using sulphuric acid, for the leaching reagent, and ""pachucas"" for the contactor.The basic leaching process involves the pregrinding of the ore and the mixing of the ore with hot sulphuric acid, the mixture is air agitated, the air being used to oxidize the ore as well as produce agitation. Within the Elliot Lake orebodies are minerals such as chlorite schist, diabase, and basement material, all very high acid consumers, consuming up to 1000 lbs. of acid per ton of ore. Several mining operations are currently evaluating the feasibility of changing their mining method to Block Caving. There will also be several deep low-grade ore bodies that will face the need to go underground in following their ore to depth. There are two main reasons why Block Caving is attractive: firstly, it offers the lowest operating costs amongst all the mining methods; and secondly, it is truly a massive mining method, offering the highest potential production capacity. Despite its longstanding popularity, there are still significant components of the method that are not clearly understood. Also, the lack of availability of key geomechanic information still presents a major obstacle to developing mine planning and production scheduling. There are several key issues in block caving that can make it feasible such as cavability, fragmentation, stresses will condition the way that a block caves and the way that material is drawn from the draw points. Consequently Block Cave mining method is a good example where the ore body has to be related to design and mine planning. The concepts of dilution, draw control as well as sequence definition are reviewed in this paper to illustrate the idea of integration. There have been some examples of mines where some of the components of mine planning have not been integrated causing a disaster in terms of economics or safety. Different layouts configurations might give a different result in the planning of the mine

"This description of the structural geology of the Beattie mine has been condensed from a more comprehensive paper published previously (4).The property is in western Quebec, a short distance east of the Ontario boundary on the extension of the so-called Porcupine belt into Quebec.According to the geological surveys of the Dominion and Provincial Governments the regional structure in the vicinity of the mine is an easterly pitching, overturned syncline with several thousand feet of Timiskaming sediments in the centre surrounded by Keewatin volcanics (1, 2, 3).The mine lies on the north limb of the syncline, and the Keewatin series in this locality is, with few exceptions, overturned, dipping steeply north and facing south.The mineralization is closely related in space, and possibly genetically, to a body of syenite porphyry intruded into the Keewatin series along the north limb of the syncline. No ore has been found very far from the syenite or related lath-porphyry dykes, and the largest orebodies are composite, consisting of bleached and brecciated volcanics ( primarily tuffs) adjacent to altered syenite porphyry, both silicified and mineralized with very fine pyrite and arsenopyrite. In addition there are important ore shoots following a fracture zone within the syenite."

"IntroductionMinerals may be classed broadly as ferromagnetic (magnetite for example), as paramagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field convergence) and as diamagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field divergence). High-intensity separators are not necessary to separate ferromagnetic minerals from other classes. Rather, low-intensity units that generate fields below 5000 gauss are adequate for this purpose. However, paramagnetic minerals, such as ilmenite, with high magnetic ""attractability"" require fields of up to 10 000 gauss; those with low attractability may require even higher fields. Table 1 shows approximate ranges of field intensities necessary to separate ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals from minerals of lower attractability, along with the force with which they are attracted relative to iron in a standardized magnetic field.Uniform magnetic fields, not useful for separators, are generated between flat parallel surfaces; non-uniform fields, useful for separators, arise when at least one of the surfaces is of irregular shape. The diagrams below show how magnetic lines of force align relative to north and south poles.If a particle is placed in a uniform field, it feels no displacing force unless the particle distorts the applied field assymmetrically. This is not the case in non-uniform fields which are required for magnetic separators.Magnetic fields can be generated by permanent magnets (low intensity), by electromagnets (medium and high intensity) and even by superconducting coils (100 000 gauss fields and higher), although the latter are not as yet useful in production environments .The magnetic force of attraction per unit of mass, that acts on a paramagnetic mineral such as hematite, increases in proportion to the strength of the field . Unfortunately, the highest fields attainable with electromagnets is of the order of 20 000 gauss. Fortunately, the gradient of the fie ld (that is, the degree of convergence of magnetic lines of force) is important, because the attractive force per unit mass is proportional to it also . "As has been noted on numerous occasions, the vertical shafts being sunk around the world are all tending to get deeper as we seek to take advantage of higher grades of minerals which can sometimes be found at greater depths. One of the challenges with these deeper shafts is the requirement to supply services to the mine’s operations at depth as well as the requirement to dewater the mine. Both the supply of water and the dewatering of mines is generally done using piping. With the greater shaft depths, this piping is now required to contain higher pressures as well as to accommodate changes in temperature resulting from normal mine operations. This paper will discuss the requirements for the design of high pressure piping in deep vertical shafts. The discussion will start with the general definition of the systems and the detailed design requirement. Once this is clearly outlined, we will discuss the options available for fulfilling these requirement as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each of the systems. We will finish with the installation recommendations and provide a basis for the maintenance of these systems. INTRODUCTION Piping in vertical shafts is used to provide a number of services in underground workings. These services vary depending on geographical location and the type of the ore body which is being mined. For example, in the Zambian Copper mines, one of the largest requirements for in shaft piping is for dewatering. Similarly in the Gold deposits in the West Wits basin as well as the deep level Copper deposits in Arizona, one of the largest uses for the piping is the supply of a cooling medium to underground workings to create a safe working environment (this can in the form of water or of glycol depending on the application). In South Africa, systems were installed which used the hydrostatic head which is generated from supplying chilled water to mines whose depths exceeded 2,000 m below surface. This chilled water was supplied as a closed system, allowing for high pressures to be generated which was then used to supply useful work (for example, Rock Drills, Face Cleaning and other ancillary services) whose power was traditionally supplied by compressed air or electricity. This system was initially researched by Chamber of Mine in South Africa. The design pressure range of these systems is 14 MPa to 18 MPa."

"HistoricalBARYTES was mined in Nova Scotia as early as 1874 from a deposit at Five Islands, on the north shore of Minas Basin. The first record of the presence of the mineral at the Walton site appears in a report by Selwyn in l893, who states: ""Barytes in considerable quantity occurs in veins in lime-stones at Walton and Pembroke"". The exact site of the present workings was marked •on a map published by Fletcher in 1905.The economic •possibilities of this deposit, however, were not recognized until 1940, at which time we were at war with Germany, who up to that time had supplied 50 per cent of the world's requirements.At that time the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, recognizing the need for certain strategic minerals, induced Canadian Industrial Minerals, Limited, to send prospectors into 'the area to look for manganese. No manganese deposits were found, but a deposit of barytes was directed to their attention, and exploration and development work on the occurrence was proceeded with.IntroductionThe south shore of Minas Basin between the Avon river at Windsor and the Stewiacke river at Maitland has long been known as a potential source of mineral wealth. It had attracted the attention of mineralogists and in the past had produced considerable tonnages of manganese ore and gypsum. Depletion of ore in surface and near surface deposits resulted in a dwindling production, until today only deposits of gypsum are worked."

"The Duthie mine is on the southwest slope of Hudson Bay mountain 7 1/2 miles west of Smithers, British Columbia. A good motor road about 15 miles long connects the mine with the Canadian National railway at Smithers. The principal workings are on the Henderson group of claims between elevations of 3,200 and 4,000 feet above sea-level. Silver, lead, and zinc were produced from this mine between 1924 and 1930.Three adit drifts known as the Compressor, McPherson, and Thompson levels were driven along the Henderson vein-lode in 1922, and the following year the operating company, known as Duthie Mines, Limited, shipped some high-grade silver-lead-zinc ore. Further shipments of high-grade, handsorted ore were made in 1926, and in 1927 a modern flotation-type mill was built, having a capacity of 50 tons of ore a day. Mining operations were suspended in March 1930."

THE Joggins coal field, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia, is on the easterly side of Chignecto bay, at the head of the bay of Fundy. In area, so far as proven, the field extends easterly from the town of Joggins about fifteen miles to Chignecto. The distance across the outcrops of the several seams exposed is approximately one mile. HISTORY Early records of coal mining in this locality are somewhat obscure, but it is known that prior to 1750 the French settlers were mining coal for their own use from the seams which outcrop in the floor of the bay adjacent to the shore, where, at low tide, the reefs are bared for a mile or more. Coal was also mined from the seams outcropping in the cliffs. It is known, too, that at Joggins coal has been mined commercially for over one hundred years. At first, all shipments were made by water, but in 1882 a railway connecting with the Intercolonial railway at Maccan was built to serve this field. GEOLOGY Due to the abundance of fossils in the strata forming the Joggins cliffs, this area was for many years a mecca for geological students from all over this continent. A 'sunken fcrest' in the shoreline was of particular interest but, due to constant erosion by the sea, this has apparently been all washed away. On the Joggins shore, the cliffs stand sixty to one hundred feet high, and six workable coal seams, with numerous smaller ones, are there exposed. Others outcrop in the reefs extending from the shore toward the bed of the bay. In working underground, fossilized trees are often found immediately overlying a coal seam, and standing at right angles to the pitch of the seam. This is said to be an unusual condition. In most cases, the bark of the tree is a fine-quality coal, with high carbon content, whereas the pulp has turned to 'stone'. There is a definite tendency for the coal to run out, or turn to shale. One seam, workable two miles from the shore, has almost completely disappeared in the outcrop at the shoreline. ? It was thought that a large area could be mined under the bay from an opening near the shore, but the first submarine level had to be abandoned at a distance of 4,000 feet, where the coal became very dirty and shaly, and the mine able area to the westward became more restricted as the mine was developed to the deep. This tendency is common to all seams.

Extending the campaign life of the Mitsubishi furnaces at Xstrata Copper's Kidd Metallurgical Division Copper Smelter has been a major focus of attention for many years. One aspect of this effort is real time monitoring to detect abnormal conditions and safely shut the furnaces down before significant damage occurs. Traditional real time methods of monitoring the integrity of refractory furnaces containing molten metal include alarms on individual temperatures of the refractory or cooling water. The need to set alarm limits which are not exceeded across the range of normal operating conditions leads to a system that only provides a limited warning, if any, before a failure occurs. Integrity monitoring systems that look at many different signals and alarm only changes in the relationships between the signals have been implemented on the smelting and converting furnaces. The systems are based on principle components analysis (PCA) models and implemented with the monitorMV software package. These provide much more sensitive and selective alarms so that changes in integrity are alarmed well in advance of any event. At a critical alarm level, the converting furnace is set to automatically shut down so that operating and technical personnel can review the situation. The configuration of the systems and operating experience with them will be discussed.

Wear, fatigue and corrosion are the most widely encountered modes of failure in materials used in engineering applications, including aero-gas turbines. Although wear is distinctly classified as adhesive, abrasive, erosive, fretting and so on, there are usually more than one wear mechanism involved in the failure of components in service because there are many systems and materials variables active in materials wear that makes it more difficult to study. This is further complicated by the discrepancies between the results of laboratory tests and field data. The present investigation was set up to examine the wear characteristics of M50 and T1 high-speed steels at both room and elevated temperatures to draw a thorough understanding of the wear behavior of this class of high-speed steels. This article focuses on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of wear for T1 and M50 high-speed steels using a pin-on-disk wear machine.

"Gold occurs in Nova Scotia in three ways, saddle reefs, fissure veins, and fossil placers. Of these the saddle reefs are the commonest. They have been the source of most of the gold and have also been the subject of most of the literature on the gold occurrences.The Meguma or Gold-bearing series of Nova Scotia is a conformable succession of quartzite's and slates, possibly Precambrian in age, which have been folded into a number of anticlines and synclines that strike (Fig. 1) roughly east and west. This folding has been termed Acadian and is probably a westward continuation of the Caledonian revolution in Britain. It may have started in the Ordovician and continued through the Silurian and into the Lower Devonian. It was followed by the intrusion of the great Devonian granite batholiths. It is thought that the mineralization is connected with the late phases of the cooling of the granite. As the name saddle reef implies, the veins form on the crests and flanks of the anticlines, possibly in the synclinal troughs as well. The beds favoured by the solutions are the slates. The reason for this is apparent when it is realized that in order to fold over 30,000 feet of sediments (the thickness of the Meguma according to E. R. Faribault) through p radians of arc it is necessary to have a differential movement between the top and bottom beds of p times the thickness of the sediments. In the case of the Gold-bearing series, in which strong quartzite beds lie between incompetent slate beds, most of this differential movement was taken up in the slates. The evidence for this is the remarkably fine drag folding and the intense shearing and comminution of some of the beds of slate (Fig. 1). The quartzites exhibit some shearing and faulting, but there is little doubt that the greater permeability lay along the incompetent slate beds. The mineralizing solutions followed these beds and also passed from one slate bed to another through a joint or fault in the intervening bed of quartzite. These joining veins are called angulars in Nova Scotia. Within the veins the gold is in shoots and the real problem is to find out what controls the position and extent of the shoots."

Therefore, there is a great deal of interest from the automotive and the metal casting industry to develop viable economic casting processes for magnesium-base alloys. This paper summarizes the preliminary results on the continuing projects within CANMET-MTL on casting processes such as gravity and low-pressure casting in sand molds, permanent molds and lost foam.

The Slave Province, a segment of Archean continental crust, migrated west and north from the northern flank of the Superior protoshield shortly after the Kenoran orogeny. The probable cause of migration, the path it followed and the cause of its coming to rest can be inferred from the Bouguer gravity data. The migration caused an indentation in the edge of the Superior protoshield which precluded the development of the Hudsonian orogenic front under Hudson Bay. As the nickel and asbestos deposits of the Thompson Nickel Belt and the New Quebec Nickel Belt are restricted to this orogenic front, no such deposits would occur under Hudson Bay.
