"At the San Manuel mine (Arizona, USA), in-situ copper leaching of a copper porphyry deposit was carried out from 1986 to 1999 during underground and open-pit mining. In 1993–1994, well¬field testing of the supergene zone, composed primarily of chrysocolla and copper-rich clay minerals, led to estimates that 52% of the acid-soluble copper (ASCu) could be recovered during in-situ leaching; however, the actual recovery from zone 6, which had the longest leach history, was approximately 42%. Comparing drillcore assay data from holes drilled before and after leaching also indicated an approximate recovery of 42%. The discrepancy between the predicted (52%) and actual (42%) recovery is probably related to several factors, including difficulty maintaining fluid saturation, channelling effects, and gypsum precipitation. ¦ KEYWORDS Copper oxides, in-situ leaching, Modelling, Porphyry, Solvent extraction and electrowinning (SXEW), Well-to-well RÉSUMÉ À la mine San Manuel (Arizona, États-Unis), on a procédé de 1986 à 1999 à la lixiviation in-situ de cuivre d’un gisement porphyre cuprifère pendant l’exploitation minière souterraine et à ciel ouvert. "MR. CHAIRMAN AND GENTLEMEN :I begin this talk by making a couple of comments which are of the nature of disclaimers.Firstly, and as the Chairman has otherwise indicated, I was neither ""born into"" nor have I spent more than a few years of my professional life in the mining industry. I mention this because many might, and perhaps rightly, consider that an added qualification in presenting a report of what the industry has accomplished. Indeed, I am not here to blindly defend all of its actions and inactions in respect to environmental control over the years. Nor am I here to seek absolution of the industry's past transgressions - if indeed that is the word. Mistakes might be a better one. I concluded some time ago that the effects of those mistakes are too difficult to assess against the sea of errors of our total society. I should mention too that I am not an environmental engineer or specialist - only a portion of my interest is involved with this field. Perhaps this permits a perspective which allows a more accurate and objective view.One further comment here. My job today, as I understand it, is to generally report upon the nature and extent of the response of the metals mining industry to control of the environment. In the case of an industry operating at more than a hundred locations and for various reasons at various stages of progress, it is not an easy job. On the other hand, I wanted to avoid the use of generalities because, especially within the context of environmental or ecological opinion and of the practice of condemnation of industrial segments, I think we've had about enough of generalities until we know far more than we do.Finally, I am quite aware that a statement of future plans to achieve environmental control does not impress or satisfy as many people as it may have done some years ago. Public opinion demands to know what is currently underway, today."

"From preliminary investigations it has been observed that although evaporation losses may be estimated by comparing single values of certain physical properties of crude oils and their evaporation residues, such techniques possess little accuracy unless both the evaporation process and the variation of the property as a function of the process are completely known. The accuracy of estimation may be increased somewhat through the comparison of property mid-per-cent curves. Further increases in accuracy are possible if bottoms yield •curves rather than mid-percent curves are used. The use of both the mid-percent and bottoms yield curves however involves a prohibitive amount of effort in most cases. Examinations of distillation bottoms from Hempel type distillations carried to end points just short of the cracking point have indicated that these bottoms are not appreciably affected by the evaporation process. It was further observed that bottoms of identical API gravity, obtained from a crude oil and its evaporation residues behave as if they were pure components which were unaffected by evaporation. Based on these observations Hempel distillation bottoms of equal API gravity were obtained for a crude oil and its various evaporation residues from API gravity bottoms yield curves. The volume percent of these bottoms in the crude oil and its residues were used to calculate the evaporation losses suffered by the crude in order to yield the various residues. The results indicate that, although further refinements in technique are required, it is possible to calculate evaporation losses with an accept-able degree of accuracy through the use of this method."

Introduction The geology of the Sudbury nickel field has been studied extensively, but there are few reports dealing with the structure of the interior of the basin. It was not until the Treadwell-Yukon zinc-lead deposits were discovered that attention was strongly directed toward the large-scale faulting that has split the basin parallel to its long axis. This faulting has been responsible for the , ore deposits in the basin and it may be regarded in many ways as the most important geological event, next to the intrusion and differentiation of the nickel eruptive sheet, that has occurred in the Sudbury region. The early reports on the nickel region by Bell, and Barlow, were chiefly concerned with the nickel-copper ores and with the formations of the region. Coleman was the first geologist to map the nickel eruptive as a continuous sheet around the belt and to emphasize its basin character. On the map accompanying his later report, he shows an important offset in the nickel eruptive at its southwest end, where the large fault cuts this portion of the basin, but the fault was not traced into its interior, as little detailed work was clone in the basin at that time. No ore-bodies had been developed outside of the nickel-copper deposits associated with the norite when the map was prepared, and attention was mostly concentrated on the nickel eruptive. Coleman did, however, map and name the various formations found within the basin and, in general, his delineation of these has remained the standard for prospectors and other workers in the field until the present day.

Agitation requirements in oxidation autoclaves can vary widely depending on the mineralogy of the feed material and the specific process selected. Before selecting an agitation system it is important that the client specify the desired throughput, mineralogy, chemistry, kinetics, compartments, overall retention time, and the desired oxygen utilization. In selecting the agitation system, the factors mentioned above as well as oxygen solubility, oxygen mass transfer coefficients, and specific power are evaluated. Much research effort has been directed toward open tank systems for fermentation and oxidation processes. However, for high pressure autoclave oxidation processes little information is available. In this review the author's experience in the autoclave industry and some of the available literature are utilized to compare the installed power per unit volume with some of the methods proposed for open tank oxidation. Equations that appear to give results close to that experienced in the industry have been identified. Further work is required in this area to develop a higher degree of confidence in the ability to predict the power required for any given case.

Traditionally, there have been three main methods for iron removal in the hydrometallurgical production of zinc. These methods are atmospheric precipitation of jarosite or goethite and pressurised precipitation of hematite. Jarosite precipitation is without doubt the leading and the most commonly used technology for iron removal. However, jarosite precipitation has some drawbacks, such as a low iron content (and, thus, high residue volume), high moisture content after filtration and often a high zinc content. These features make any environmentally acceptable way of using or disposing of jarosite more expensive, as compared to hematite and goethite. The importance of environmental regulations has grown in the zinc industry during the last decade, which will have an increasing effect on new investments. Hematite has several advantages over jarosite, such as a high iron content, low moisture and low zinc content. An important advantage of hematite is that it is suited for further use in the cement industry. However, until now the need for autoclave equipment has limited the spread and implementation of hematite precipitation in the zinc industry. Outokumpu Technology Oy has recently developed an alternative method for iron removal, which is the atmospheric precipitation of hematite. A patented method for precipitating hematite at atmospheric pressure is presented and compared with conventional methods for iron removal. The process conditions, the quality of the hematite precipitate and the environmental aspects are also discussed.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). Nickel laterites contain about 70% of all continental or terrestrial nickel resources; therefore the recovery of nickel from lateritic ores has large economic significance. The processing of lateritic ores involves the preparation and movement of concentrated aqueous suspensions. However due to complex characteristics and non-Newtonian properties, ranging from shear-thinning to shear-thickening and from thixotropic to rheopectic, a basic understanding of the flow behaviour must be developed. This understanding will assist in the development of new plants and the operation of existing plants. The work in this paper involves the characterization of three ore types from the Vermelho ore deposit to categorize them as rheologically simple to complex. Rheological testing was also conducted on pure mineral samples that represent the main minerals in these samples. The results show that the rheological properties of the ore types can be related to the surface properties and physical characteristics of the main mineral constituents.

Project Environmental Approval is a multi-faceted issue. From a mining perspective, it is a costly item because of avoidable time delay. The government perspective is that the approvals are a necessary part of meeting departmental requirements to ensure that the wellbeing of other uses of the environment is maintained. This paper outlines some of the problems inherent in the environmental approvals process and makes recommendations to both the proponent and government about improving the efficiency of the process.

"IntroductionThe greater part of the iron ore industry in Canada is located along the Labrador-Quebec border on a geological formation known as the Labrador trough. The Labrador trough is a 700 · mile long geosynclinal segment composed of folded and faulted Proterozoic sediments, volcanics and intrusives, extending from Gagnon, Quebec, to the north west tip of Ungava Bay. This geosyncline can be divided into three parts (Fig. 1).The northern unmined part, extending from southern to northern Ungava Bay, is a low grade metamorphosed iron formation.The iron deposits of the central region, represented by Schefferville, are hematite-limonite ores formed by oxidation and leaching of an unmetamorphosed taconite formation. Average iron content of the ore is greater than 540Jo for direct shipping and 50% for plant feed.The deposits of the southern section (Carol Lake, Wabush, Mt. Wright, Gagnon) extend from just north of Carol Lake to Gagnon and is a metamorphosed silica-iron oxide (specular hematite and magnetite) formation averaging plus 30% iron.The mineral wealth of this area was first observed by Father Louis Babel about 1870 and again by Dr. A.P. Low of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1894. However, the remote location hindered development until after 1945. First production of direct shipping ore from Schefferville was in 1954. Production at Carol Lake commenced in 1962.This area now accounts for sixty million long tons (61 Mt) per year of processed iron ore products as follows:This chapter will concentrate on pelletizing and agglomeration as experienced at the Iron Ore Company's Carol Lake operation. However, whenever possible, reference will be made to alternate methods, procedures, equipment, etc."

Stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) tests were conducted in the near-neutral pH standard solution, NS4, and in an actual soil solution, using four-point bending at high a stress ratio and low frequency conditions very similar to those of operational pipelines. Pitting incubation appeared first and then pitting initiated and grew in both solutions although there were many more pits on the specimen tested in soil purged with 5% CO2 + 95% N2 than in the specimen tested in NS4 solution purged with the same gas. These observations show that samples in soil solution are more susceptible to pitting than those in NS4 solution. When the pit reached a critical size, the increased stress concentration around the pits, resulted in the transition to a crack.

"THE MAYO AREA was prospected as early as 1887. The first major activity started in 1898, when the Stewart River and its tributaries were examined for placer deposits, and in succeeding years the district became a small producer of placer gold. The first discovery of the lead-zinc-silver mineralization which has become the main interest of the district occurred in 1906, when a vein was found in the canyon of Galena Creek on the northwest slope of Galena Hill. This deposit was later known as the Silver King mine. In 1919 further discoveries were made on Keno Hill, approximately 15 miles east of the Silver King, the most important being the No.9 vein. Directly or indirectly, these finds are attributable to the search for placer gold, as galena was frequently found in the stream gravels.The 1919 Keno Hill discoveries were acquired by Yukon Gold Co. and operated through a subsidiary, Keno Hill Ltd., from 1920 to 1923. Most of the production came from No.9 vein. In 1921 Treadwell Yukon Corporation entered the field and acquired the Ladue mine. This company continued to operate for 21 years. It acquired in succession the Ladue, Sadie, Friendship, Lucky Queen, Elsa, Silver King, and Calumet mines. Its record of successful operations is very largely the achievement of the late Livingston Wernecke. Under his direction, the Treadwell Yukon Corp. produced metals with a gross value in excess of $21,000,000, in the face of greater transportation problems than exist today and with considerably lower metal prices.Treadwell Yukon ceased operations in 1942. Its entire assets were acquired in 1946 by United Keno Hill Mines Ltd., which has substantially increased the original holdings. It has drawn the bulk of its production from the Hector mine, adjacent to the Calumet. The Hector was not developed by Treadwell Yukon because of legal disputes among the vendors. It has proven to be the largest deposit yet discovered in the district."

In contrast to the equipment described in the two succeeding chapters, this range of equipment, in nearly every instance, superimposes a mechanical movement on the fluid motion to effect separation of the valuable mineral from the waste mineral. The motion may be vertical Gigs), reversing (tables), or rotary (slime plants): however, in common they ""dilate"" the bed of particles to allow preferential settlement of the heavier particles.Description of Process UnitsJiggingJigging is the sorting of different minerals by stratification, based on the movement of a bed of particles relative to a fluid in a vertical plane.The basic construction of a jig is shown in Figure 1. Essentially it consists of an open tank filled with a fluid, normally water, with a horizontal jig screen at the top and with a spigot in the ""hutch"", or bottom compartment, for removal of heavies. The jig beri consists of a layer of coarse heavy particles (ragging) on the jig screen. This ragging is of a specific gravity between that of the minerals it is intended to separate.In operation the bed is made fluid by a pulsating current of fluid to provide stratification. On the upward or pulsion stroke the bed of ragging and slurry is normally Hfted as a mass, then as velocity of the upcurrent decreases it dilates, loosening the whole mass. On the downward or suction stroke it closes slowly again. The ideal is to control this dilation of the bed of material so that the heavier and smaller particles penetrate the interstices of the bed, while the larger heavies fall under a condition akin to ""hindered"" settling."

Aerospace and space products depend, probably more than any other products in industry, on advanced materials. While there are many ways of producing aerospace parts, in many cases the process does not allow the design of the metallurgical properties according to the part or product requirements in accordance with its mechanical configuration. Key to the next level of innovative manufacturing is the capability to control the amount of energy applied to the process, as well as the addition of materials in form of vapor or solid particles such as powder in order to build up the metallurgical composition required. With the development of a high speed pulsed laser-electron beam source, the LASTRON(TM) technology, we deliver the basic requirement for a digital manufacturing process of aerospace and space products. This technology, combining Laser and electron beam, finds application in welding, drilling-machining, and is currently modified to allow digital coating (PEB-PVD) methods. In addition to the coating, a powder metallurgical process, called Rapid Manufacturing (RM), will allow the precision melting of parts based on CAD/CAM files. The RM process and the digital coating will allow the production of graded aerospace alloys in parts for jet engines and aero-structures.

NORMAN WEISS, Milling Engineer, American Smelting• and Refining Company: The subject of the Forum on Rod and Ball Mill Liners is very fascinating, and there is no end of discussion when operators get together on grinding. However, the hypotheses and suppositions easily outrun the facts, especially when we •consider the inaccuracy of many reported observations. Still surprisingly small is the number of concentrators even reasonably well equipped to measure power consumption of each grinding mill, together with running time, so that data on this tangible factor, at least, can be obtained with precision. While the more elaborate devices of this nature, producing for each 24-hour period the total power consumption, average kilowatt hours per hour, short-term demand chart, instantaneous demand, and print-out, may cost in the neighbourhood of $2,500 per mill and may be difficult to justify, the combination of an ammeter, watthour meter, and running-time meter will cost only a few hundred dollars, so there appears to be little reason not to in-stall them in view of their numerous advantages.

Surfaces of rock slopes in cold regions often become frozen in winter. Therefore, understanding time-dependent behavior of frozen rock, as well as that of unfrozen rock, is important for long-term stability assessment of rock slopes. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression tests and creep tests were carried out on Shikotsu welded tuff under dry and water-saturated conditions at -20 °C to clarify timedependent strength and deformation of the frozen rock. The influence of water content on them also was investigated. It was found that the amount of deformation of the water-saturated specimen was much greater than that of the dry specimen. It also was found that the creep behavior of the water-saturated specimen was similar to that of polycrystalline ice. These show that deformation of the water-saturated specimen is strongly affected by pore ice. The UCS of the water-saturated specimen was approximately equal to that of the dry specimen at a strain rate below 4.2×10-6/s, and its value was about 17 MPa. However, the former increased up to 26 MPa at 4.2×10-4/s with loading rate, whereas there was little increase in the latter. This means that the UCS of the water-saturated specimen was always greater than that of the dry specimen at higher strain rates. The creep life of water-saturated specimens was longer than that of the dry specimens at stress level greater than 15 MPa. These results of UCS and creep life show that inclusion effect due to presence of pore ice plays an important role on strength of the water-saturated specimen. Creep life of the non-failure specimen that was loaded for more than three days was estimated by the relationship between creep life and axial strain rate at 10 s on failure specimens. It was found that creep life of the water-saturated specimens was shorter than that of the dry specimen at stress levels less than 14 MPa. This suggests that estimation of creep life of frozen rock under water-saturated condition is important for the stability assessment of frozen rock slopes. It was clear that the loading-rate dependency of UCS was related to the stress-level dependency of creep life in both dry and wet conditions. This indicates that there are common fracture mechanism in creep and uniaxial compression tests. It also indicates that the creep life can be estimated by the relationship between the UCS and the loading rate. The time dependencies of the water-saturated specimen were in good agreement with those of polycrystalline ice. This confirms that pore ice strongly affects the strength of the water-saturated specimens as, well as the deformation behavior.

In the period 2003-2004, the situation of the copper concentrate market was unfavourable for smelters and refineries, with low TC/RC values and euro-dollar parity affecting European companies negatively. Within this scenario, Atlantic Copper decided to develop a plan to increase its competitiveness and to improve its results in these market circumstances. The plan affected all departments in the Company and was based mainly on cost reduction in energy and manpower. A general analysis of the Complex's overall efficiency was carried out and, based on this analysis, two major Projects emerged, "Primavera" and "KF". Each Project consisted of smaller sub-projects which aimed at improving the areas which could perform better according to our general analysis. The paper describes how this entire project developed and the final results obtained by the Company.

Due to increase grinding fineness can save the grinding time and reduce the cost of grinding, also can avoid the disadvantage of fairly granular mineral particles cause a deterioration in the flotation. The limitations of traditional flotation machine is increasing[1],for instance, the high energy consumption, severe wear, inconvenient configuration , large amount of maintenance and so on. Compared with flotation machine, the flotation column with high separation efficiency, low investment and production cost, covers a less area low installation cost, less reagent dosage, more suitable for separation of fine particles and can automatically control, etc[2]. At present, the ore is facing the world energy crisis situation, and becoming increasingly difficult to flotation. So it is important to invent a coarse particle flotation column."

THE opinion, based upon geological knowledge, that certain areas within the Province of Nova Scotia might yield commercial quantities of petroleum, is not new. It dates back to at least 1864, when the Pioneer Oil and Salt Company drilled some shallow holes in search of oil near lake Ainslie, Cape Breton. As a matter of fact, several companies were engaged in oil exploratory work near lake Ainslie at about that time; included among them were the Inverness Oil and Mining Company, the Victoria Oil Company, the American Oil Company, and the Cape Breton Oil and Mining Company. Oil exploration by these and other companies was conducted sporadically on Cape Breton island until 1914. In several instances, the depth of the test holes exceeded 1,000 feet; the deepest was carried to 3,260 feet. The Lake Ainslie area was selected because oil seepages were present along certain sections of the lake shore, but the tests that were drilled to tap the oil-bearing zone failed to yield anything of commercial value. Currently, there are three areas in Nova Scotia wherein active exploratory work is being conducted, namely, at Pugsley Siding close to Amherst; at Kennetcook, Hants county; and near Mabou, Inverness county. The Pugsley Siding test is being drilled by the Sun Oil Company, of Philadelphia; the work at Kennetcook is under the direction of the Nova Scotia Oil and Gas Company; two relatively deep holes were drilled by the Lion Oil Refining Company in 1944 near Mabou, and, as a result of the additional geological information derived therefrom, another test probably will be drilled by this Company in the same area. Aside from these activities in the search for petroleum, the oil possibilities of several other sections of the Province are being studied by means of surface geological mapping.

"The Premier mine; owned by Silbak Premier Mines; Limited; is 14 miles from Stewart at the head of Portland canal. Development of the property began in 1918; and since chat time a very large amount of gold and silver as well as some lead and copper have been produced from the mine.The area in the vicinity of the mine is underlain by greenstones tuffs, and sediments of Mesozoic age, belonging to the Bear River formation of the Hazelton group. These rocks are intruded by a stock 2 miles in diameter, composed of orthoclase porphyry and called the Premier porphyry. It sends numerous sill-like and dyke-like tongues into the Bear River formation, and is intruded in turn by a granodiorite outlier of the Coast Range batholith. The orebodies occupy fractures and fracture or shear zones. Primary ore consists chiefly of pyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with some chalcopyrite. The upper 300 feet, or locally 600 feet, contained presumably secondary silver minerals."
