The Maritimes Carboniferous Basin is the largest intermontane basin in the Appalachian Mountain System, occupying a total area of 57,200 square miles and containing up to 30,000 feet of late Devonian through Permian .sediments. Deposition began with continental elastics in late Devonian and early Mississippian. Marine deposition is represented by a limestone-evaporite sequence of late Mississippian age. Pennsylvanian and Permian continental rocks deposited largely in flood-plain and swamp environments complete the succession. Marine seismic data disclose several varieties of structure, both halokinetic and tectonic in origin. Recent exploratory drilling in the offshore part of the Basin encountered good reservoir rocks in the Riversdale sandstones, which also provided encouraging shows. The most likely source rocks of hydro~ arbons in the Maritimes Basin are shales in the Horton and Riversdale groups. Potential recoverable reserves of the Maritimes Basin are estimated to be 400 million barrels of oil or 7.8 trillion cubic feet of gas, based on the volume-of-sediment method of calculation.

Recognition of the Growing Importance of Iron and Steel Few Canadians have yet become aware that Canada's vast iron ore resources, the greater part of which is only now beginning to be developed, will inevitably have a profound effect on the entire Canadian economy, benefitting in some measure the lives of all Canadians. The great iron mining developments of Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec, and Labrador are destined to make Canada one of the world's major producers and exporters of this material, on which our industrial civilization is?based. These developments will create new employment, new communities, new transportation facilities, and new investment opportunities. Iron ore is the foundation and the keystone of modern mechanized civilization. The most prosperous nations of the world are the highest per capita consumers of iron and steel, and in these countries the per capita consumption is increasing steadily despite the advent of light metals, plastics, and other competitive materials. Three-quarters of the human race have too little steel -and consequently too little mechanization -to provide for themselves the necessities and comforts of civilized living. Progressively they will demand, and acquire, the machines, the transportation and communication facilities now lacking, and they will win them by making greater use of the world's iron resources. It is the good fortune of this generation that Canada's 'iron age' is just getting well under way.

"This paper, an update to the 2003 paper titled "Knowledge, Technology and Profit" (Twigge-Molecey, 2003) analyzes 45 "problem projects" from the mining and metals industry over the last eleven years representing $133 billion in CAPEX. The projects have been designated as "problem projects" as they did not meet their owner’s initial expectations for project performance as defined in the paper. This paper explores some of the challenges that were present, through interviews with the knowledgeable individuals that were familiar with the projects and investigations using publically available information. The aim of the exercise was to identify the key challenges faced by the projects, and the contributing factors that led to the project failures so that the lessons can be applied to future projects.The project challenges have been categorized into four themes, technical, organizational, environmental & social and missing "homework" prior to board approval. Of noteworthy interest is that environmental permitting aspects have risen to become a significant and notable contributor to problem projects in 11 years from 2003 to 2014. It is further observed that many projects have been challenged by increasing size and complexity and with execution in more remote locations since the previous paper.It is a reality that every project will face challenges. Some projects are simply more challenging than others, and success or failure of the project is often determined by whether the project team is fully prepared to respond to the challenges. This in turn is largely dependent on whether the project "homework" was adequately completed and considered for all aspects of the project."

Mineral concentrators are designed from preliminary geological data, and are therefore subject to geological uncertainty. This uncertainty has a demonstrable impact on the mining lifecycle, and has motivated stochastic strategic mine planning algorithms. The current paper describes how these algorithms may be extended to consider mineral processing operations in conjunction with open-pit mining operations. In particular, the paper describes an effective way to incorporate variable concentrator feed grade into these algorithms, which is the first step toward more elaborate representations of mineral concentrators. The resulting framework will be able to connect geological data to alternate configurations of the downstream resources, hence comparing the benefit of each configuration, and the corresponding capital investments. Sample computations are presented, comparing the NPV and utilization for several different mineral processing capacities.

Sheep Creek Mines Limited has developed several operating techniques that have greatly assisted in keeping unit costs at reasonable levels. Some of the techniques, as described in this paper, include organization, accounting, warehousing, bonus and contracts. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is a non-technical report on operating techniques developed by Sheep Creek Mines Limited at their Mineral King mine, located near lnvermere, B.C. Depressed metal prices and continually rising labour and materials costs have necessitated a continuous search for method to keep operating costs down. The newly developed techniques and practices have greatly assisted in maintaining unit costs. Sheep Creek Mines Limited is a mining company incorporated under the laws of the Province of British Columbia. The Company's share capital is 3,500,000 common shares, witl1 a par value of 50 cents each, of which there are 1,875 000 shares is-sued. The Company has eight di-rectors. The administration, exploration and accounting offices are located in Nelson, B.C. The Company's working capital is approximately $1,500,000.

"The High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant of Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation (THPAL), located in Taganito, Philippines, with a nameplate capacity of 30,000 Ni-t/year started commercial operation on October 2013. The plant load was smoothly ramped up and it achieved monthly production equivalent to 33,000 Ni-t/year in 2016. Partial improvement of the plant capacity for the achievement of 36,000 Ni-t/year, as evaluated from the current operation progress of each system is planned for 2017. In this paper, aside from presenting the progress of the plant ramp-up, research and development activities such as the reduction of nickel loss and the improvement of filtration capacity which was achieved by particle size control of ZnS precipitates in the Zinc Removal system are also discussed.INTRODUCTION Taganito HPAL Plant Project History of THPAL Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation (THPAL) was incorporated in August 2008, as a joint venture of three (3) companies, namely Mitsui Corporation with 15% share, Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) with 10% share and Sumitomo Metal Mining Corporation (SMM) with a controlling stake of 75%. Aside from its capital share, NAC’s Taganito Mining Corporation (TMC) supplies the ore for the HPAL plant located in Taganito, Claver, Mindanao, Philippines. The objective of THPAL is to produce 30,000 MT of nickel and 2,600 MT of cobalt as mixed (Ni/Co) sulfide by treating nickel laterite ore in the Philippines and exporting to Japan as raw material for SMM’s Niihama Nickel Refinery (NNR) for the next 30 years. In other words, 1.15 wt% of nickel in ore is refined to 99.99 wt% nickel in electrolytic nickel. The mixed (Ni/Co) sulfide is shipped to NNR and SMM provides the technology and management personnel to THPAL plant as well as sulfuric acid which is the main reagent for HPAL process. Figure 1 shows the location of THPAL and current relationship between the stake holders.The Characteristics of THPAL Plant In terms of plant design, a 2-train system is applied for the HPAL circuit considering the reliability of the process, facility and avoidance of whole plant shutdown due to HPAL troubles. The technical data, operation know-how and improvements gained from the successful operation of Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) which was established in April 2002 were reflected in THPAL’s plant design. As for the H2S plant, a more economical design was considered which is different from CBNC."

"Future open pit metallurgical coal mines in western Canada will be developed in complex geological environments. The success of these operations will be influenced by the mine operators' ability to prepare accurate mine plans and to predict and, subsequently, 10 control both out-of-seam dilution and coal recovery. Quintette Coal Limited has been mining its tightly folded and severely faulted Mesa depo sit at annual rates of up to 9 Mt of raw coal, since October 1982. Ongoing development drilling combined with continuous utilization of blast hole information, has been required to achieve an acceptable geological data base for short range mine planning. Thrust faulting has been a primary geological cause of difficulty in selectively mining waste and coal, which has resulted in higher than expected dilution in plant feed. The same geological phenomenon has also increased reserves by 6.3% and allowed for expanded mine plans to include a lower thrust plate, ultimately doubling the mines original reserve base. This paper illustrates the geology of the Mesa deposit and the type of work involved in its interpretation. Regional GeologyThe Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is located in the Peace River Coal Field of northeastern British Columbia. In this area, northwesterly-trending folds of the Rocky Mountain foothills are commonly cut by multiple, low-angle thrust faults, which dip to the southwest. The Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation, of near shore continental origin, contains 5 to 7 mineable seams of medium volatile bituminous metallurgical coal (Figs. I and 2). These seams normally range in thickness between 0.75 m and 9.5 m and have an aggregate thickness of between 15 m and 22 m."

Introduction In this paper it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the problems confronting the management of a gold mine in choosing a method of milling to recover the gold from various classes of ore. In order to simplify the discussion, the more common types of gold ores are classified from a metallurgical point of view as follows: Class 1?A: Free-milling ores which require only relatively coarse crushing. B: Free-milling ores which require finer grinding to release the gold. Class 2?A: Gold ores which contain the gold partly in the flee state and partly associated with a small amount of iron sulphide, and which do not require fine grinding. B: Gold ores similar to 2A, but which require fine grinding. Class 3?A: Gold ores containing copper in quantities insufficient to interfere to a serious extent with cyanidation. Gold ores containing copper in sufficient quantity to interfere with cyanidation but in which a large proportion of the gold is in the free state, the remainder being chiefly associated with the copper mineral, chalcopyrite. Gold ores containing copper and other sulphides, such as pyrite, etc., in which the gold is principally associated with these sulphides.

Furnace run-outs can cause extended furnace downtime for repair, while leaks or more severe failures in the cooling system can lead to brick hydration or in severe cases, steam explosions. These incidents can result in lost production, damage to equipment, injuries and casualties. To prevent such incidents, reliable and accurate techniques to monitor the critical components of the furnace such as refractory lining, furnace structure, taphole integrity and main water circuits are required. This paper describes several advanced methods that have been developed to assess the condition of furnace integrity, refractory lining, tapholes and cooling water circuits.

The theory of atomic distribution of the stranger atoms in the space lattice of the solvent metal has been well developed by Rosenhain. It has long been known that the addition of one metal to another to form a solid solution increases the strength and hardness of the solvent metal. This increase is practically proportional to the amount of added substance up to the limit of solid solubility. To account for this increase in hardness and strength, Rosenhain assumes that the stranger atoms occupy positions on the solvent metal space lattice. Atomic attractions about the stranger atoms will not be the same as in the case of the pure metal, and there will thus be a disturbance of the orderly arrangement of the atoms on the space lattice, or a distortion of the lattice. Such a disturbance would interfere with the ease of slip along the planes and would thus tend to promote strength and hardness. Rosenhain notes that not only may there be a local disturbance of the lattice about the stranger atom but there may well be also a measurable change in the dimensions of the lattice as a whole. The relative amounts of local and general distortion of the lattice will depend upon the nature of the lattice itself. As Rosenhain says, "If the lattice is comparatively soft and flexible the distortion is likely to be largely local. In a stiff lattice, however, local distortion will be resisted and there will be a correspondingly increased general distortion."

"There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-ferrous metals. In recent years, significant progress has been made in research and commercial application of pressure leaching technology to produce some nonferrous metals. Research and development activities include a low-pressure, low-temperature leaching technology for complex copper concentrates, a hematite process to treat pressure leach solutions from zinc concentrates, and a pressure leaching - solvent extraction process for molybdenum and rhenium. Examples of commercial practices include a two-stage pressure leach technology in a zinc plant in Danxia, a direct leaching technology in a zinc plant in Zhuzhou, a high pressure acid leaching process for a nickel laterite project in RAMU, and a pressure leaching technology to treat arsenic sulfides in a plant in Guixi. The development of pressure leaching technology for the recovery of lead, vanadium, gallium, germanium, and precious metals in China will also be described in this paper.

In a cool mine, tapping high-pressure lines through reducing valves lowers the temperature beyond remedy. It is the writer's suggestion that, for low-pressure work, law-pressure air ,should be generated in a compressor installed underground adjacent to the work, and that the jacket-water of the compressor should be utilised for re-heating purposes. Such a system of compressed air distribution, designed especially for service in cool mines, is described in the following notes. The suggested system includes a three-wire pole line from the sub-station to the opening nearest to the working face, with a cable connection extending to the latter from the openings; an electrical centrifugal unit; a reservoir excavated in the ground; and a distribution line, re-heated by jacket-water. As regards the reservoir, it may be pointed out that in many mines there are blind or abandoned tunnels that could be used for the purpose. The centrifugal type of compressed air machine is a comparatively new departure, and it was formerly considered that such a machine, operating at less than 1,000 kilowatts per unit, would be commercially impracticable. At the present time, however, these machines are being built in Europe for as little as 400 kilowatts per unit, and as much as 110 lb. per sq. inch pressure. One advantage which these centrifugal machines have over other types is that they may be driven by plain induction motors, without the help of special starters-a consideration of the first importance where the electrical regulations are severe.

"The oxidation of Quebracho was evaluated by acid-butanol assay, which indicates depolymerization of Quebracho. Anthocyanidin, an oxidation product of Quebracho, is stable at 95?C for up to 2 h. The ionization, complexation, and oxidation properties of Quebracho were discussed. Complexation of metal-Quebracho occurs at ambient temperature. The formation of complex precipitates is influenced by the acidity of the solution. Temperature is another important parameter that influences the oxidation and the complexation of Quebracho. Quebracho-ferric complex precipitate forms at 90?C, 0.1 mol/L H2SO4. The formation of Quebracho-metal complex in the leach solution is a possible reason for the consumption of Quebracho. Quebracho molecules adsorption on the mineral surface is reduced by consumption of Quebracho, resulting in poor sulfur dispersing effect in the leaching process. INTRODUCTIONQuebracho is used as a sulfur dispersing agent (SDA) in the pressure leaching of zinc concentrate as stated in U.S. Patent No. 3,867,268 (1975). It prevents the zinc sulfide particles from being coated with molten sulfur, thus preventing the inhibition of the zinc leaching reaction. Recently, the sulfur dispersing effect of Quebracho was investigated in the oxygen pressure leaching of nickel concentrate. The oxygen pressure leaching of pentlandite can be represented by reactions 1-3."

THIS paper summarizes the results of investigations carried out at Sydney Mines, N.S., and at Ottawa, following the disaster at Princess colliery, December 6th, 1938. The Honourable Minister of Mines for Nova Scotia appointed A. E. Cameron special investigator to enquire into and report upon the cause of the rope failure. Public hearings were held in Sydney Mines and evidence taken from many witnesses. The site of the accident was examined in detail and investigations made of the rope layout and colliery practice. At the request of the special investigator, the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa, kindly undertook technical and scientific examination of the broken ends of the rope. These investigations were carried out in the Metallurgical Laboratories of the Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of G. S. Farnham, Metallurgist for the Department. Valuable assistance in interpretation of many features of the investigation was received from other sources. Acknowledgment is due to Messrs. Stuewe, McCall, and Gordon, and other members of the staff of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation; to Messrs. "This presentation will provide an overview and understanding of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Ontario Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants. It includes discussions on the history and practical development of the standards and an overview of engineering best practices from a construction, maintenance and operational viewpoint. INTRODUCTION Ontario is one of the safest mining jurisdictions in the world and has some of the most comprehensive regulations for the construction, operation and maintenance of a mine. In the USA, several operators have adopted some or all of the practices prescribed by the Ontario Regulations as an internal procedure. Experience has demonstrated that these plants are indicating less unplanned downtime and fewer issues with MSHA inspectors in their hoist plants. HISTORY AND THE REGULATIONS Both Canada and the USA have had some form of laws governing the operation of mines since the late 1890s. The paths of legislation have run in reasonably parallel lines, continually improving the health and safety conditions in the mining industry. Ontario Mine Health and Safety In the 1970s the accident rates in mining were higher than any other industrial sector; this prompted a Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines (the Ham Report). The recommendations of this report, published in 1976, generated several changes in the regulations regarding worker safety in mines. Following the release of the Ham report, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) was passed by the Legislature in 1978. The Act is a set of comprehensive laws governing almost all Ontario workplaces, and it replaced separate laws governing different industrial sectors. OHS is enforced by the Ministry of Labour (MOL), and this discussion will focus specifically on Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 854, Mines and Mining Plants, Part X Mine Hoisting Plant (Ontario Regulations). USA Mine Health and Safety A coal mine explosion in West Virginia and medical studies on occupational disease led to the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (Coal Act). The Coal Act was the most comprehensive and stringent Federal legislation governing the mining industry to date. The Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) was formed, following the 1973 Act, as a new departmental agency to assume the enforcement of safety and health in mines. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act) transferred enforcement responsibilities from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Labor and named the new agency the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This agency enforces the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and this discussion refers to CFR Title 30 Mineral Resources, Chapter I Mine Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor, Subchapter K—Metal and Non-metal Mine Safety and Health (MSHA)."

Catalysts Mo-Ni-S were prepared by combining MoS2 and NiS in weight ratios 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 and 2:1, each of which was admixed with 5%wt Ag and 5%wt YSZ to increase three-phase boundary surface area of the electrode. For comparison catalysts comprising Co-Mo-S in weight ratio of 1:1 of CoS to MoS2 admixed with 5%wt Ag and YSZ and pre-sulfided NiMoO4 were made. The catalysts were examined for electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) at 850°C temperature. The catalyst prepared from 1:1 (wt. %) NiS:MoS2 demonstrated highest performance. Current density up to 1,330 mA/cm2 and power density up to 300 mW/cm2 were achieved using pure H25 gas, which are the highest among the reported H2S-powered fuel cells ever published in the literature. Anode materials of different NiS:MoS2 ratios have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous TG/DSC analysis and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA). TG/DSC and NAA results show that addition of NiS and Ag increases fuel cell performance due to improved structure/integrity of the anode. It has also been demonstrated that MoS2 is a suitable anode material in H2S-powered SOFC, with high activity towards H25 oxidation and thermally and chemically stable up to 850°C.

The PyEarth™ process developed at Mintek has been demonstrated successfully at pilot scale. Nine tons of ore containing 2.3 mass % of total rare earth oxides (TREO) from a dormant mineralogically complex iron-rich ore deposit, was subjected to a concentrating smelting step in a 200 kW DC open-arc pilot furnace and the rare earths from the resulting slag were extracted via a hydrometallurgical route. This ore deposit is practically not amenable to extraction by conventional methods. The testwork results proved that the PyEarth™ process was able to optimize the extraction of rare earths while minimizing waste through the removal of iron as a saleable iron alloy. Reduction of iron to the alloy in the smelting step was found flexible, efficient, and controllable, while rare earths were left virtually unreduced in the slag phase. The slag chemistry is selected to optimize both the smelting and leaching performances as well as the alloy composition. Leaching of the resulting slag was found possible and most efficient in hydrochloric acid amongst other lixiviants tested.

"Although there have been great steps forward to integrate corrosion engineering into operations, there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a reactive manner. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify leading indicators of failures. Prevention is generally less costly than repairs; moreover, when paired with appropriate monitoring techniques, intervention of corrosion protection can be more effectively timed and based on more accurate data. Hatch asset reliability studies show nearly 80% of defects are introduced through operations and maintenance. Therefore, proactive corrosion management can provide the necessary feedback to optimize operations and maintenance strategies preventing costly corrosion losses. Understanding corrosion risks gives a clear picture of the benefits of a proactive approach to asset performance. Monitoring techniques (Non-Destructive Testing, field testing, sampling, etc.) by nature are a more effective means of improving maintenance efforts and preventing corrosion losses than other methods (RCA, FMECA). This paper will outline the importance of proactive corrosion management and demonstrate its benefits through industry examples.INTRODUCTION Over the past few decades, with the growth of technology and awareness of sustainable development many studies have shown the benefits of a proactive approach to maintenance strategies. However, in practice there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a “reactive manner”. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify defects and leading indicators to failures."

"A precise analysis of the noise emitted by an aluminum plant has shown that one of the main sources of noise is the noise emitted by an exhaust stack 40 m high and 1.8 m diametre, emitting a pure tone at 320 Hz. Because a classical cost effective solution is not available for this source, active noise control (ANC) solution was investigated.Commonly available ANC systems, how-ever, are not applicable to the chimney considered because the diameter of the stack (f) is too important compared to the wave length(?)of the frequency to control. In fact, until now, active noise control (ANC) has been successfully used to reduce the acoustical energy emitted at the end of ducts in the case of plane wave propagation, i.e. ?/f< 1.7 [1,4].When f> ?/1.7, high order modes propagate in the duct and a single canal active noise control system is not sufficient.This paper presents an ANC system developed to control higher modes in a circular duct. The controller used is based on a multiple-input, multiple-output adaptive filtered X-LMS and allows up to 11 error micro-phones and controls sources. The system has been used in a laboratory on a finite duct of3.5 m long and 0.30 m diameter which corresponds to the same ratio ?/f for the real stack. The efficiency of the system with different numbers and location of control sources and errors sensors has been analyzed. Noise reduction of 15 dB(A) could be obtained with some configurations. Actually, the system is being considered for installation on the real chimney stack."
