Environmental and amenity factors have introduced a new dimension to the technical problems of the mining industry in finding, extracting and processing the mineral and energy products on which we all depend. Intervention by outside regulatory bodies is restricting the production of minerals and denying the industry access to large areas in which the orebodies of the future may occur. The solution lies to a large extent within the industry itself and appropriate management techniques are necessary to ensure that exploration and mining are seen as an acceptable as well as a necessary land use. Close liaison between operators and the responsible authority is necessary to achieve these objectives and to make the best use of our land resources.

Expert systems have been employed in a number of areas for a considerable number of years. However, the traditional long development times associated with these systems have restricted their application. With the advent of powerful Expert System Development Tools such as COMDALE/X and the use of efficient development techniques, the time required can be drastically reduced. This results in the availability and applicability of this technology to a wide range of applications. This paper discusses some of the 'rules' which indicate amenability (or otherwise) of a particular problem to an expert system solution. Various problem types are examined and these are illustrated with reference to examples of their use at various operating sites.

The promotion of good standards of reporting of the valuation of mineral assets in- public documents has been of concern to professional mining industry bodies, the securities industry, and. Government regulatory bodies for some time. This concern led to the National Companies and Securities Commission Release 149 (1990b) which laid down standards for Expert Reports on mining and petroleum securities, and other assets. The formation of the Australian Securities Commission provided an opportunity for a timely revision of Release 149 and the Mineral Valuation Committee was established by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1991 to review the existing code, and to develop an appropriate new Code and Guidelines.

Many aspects of best practice resource evaluation do not create value, but poor practice can certainly destroy value. Generally companies prefer to present how their good practice adds value and for this reason few publications exist on examples of how poor practice can destroy value. However in big and small companies there are many previous and current examples of poor practice destroying value. The incremental expenditure required to move from poor practice towards best practice can be looked upon as insurance against destroying shareholder value. Examples of how poor practice in geology has destroyed value are presented as well as the improvement model used by BHP Billiton to add value and insure against destroying value.

Running a successful reagent plant trial is not an easy task, especially when trying to achieve an incremental improvement in a highly variable process, such as flotation. Cytec aims to achieve one per cent recovery improvement with 90 per cent statistical confidence. Most concentrators experience large fluctuations in recovery and so the æmagicalÆ one per cent is difficult to detect. With the aid of statistical software, including REFDISTR (proprietary) and ECHIPR, Cytec have developed a unique approach to differentiate between daily operational variation and actual process improvement. This paper describes how Cytec runs a plant trial based on extensive laboratory investigation and detailed analysis of historical plant data using statistical techniques.

Mining is commonly seen as a typical basic industry with rough and even dangerous working conditions, heavy environmental load, and a low level of high-technology and automation with much manual work and operations. A mining operation (open pit or underground) is a very complex one consisting of many manual, physical, mechanical and logistical operations with different human interfaces and decisions. For this reason it is a demanding and potential area for all applications of automation and information technology: controlling difficult non-linear, time varying multivariable processes and machines; solving of ergonomic safety and environmental problems; automation of logistical systems; applying robotics, mechatronics, and information handling, etc. In addition to that, big economic sums are involved with these operations. On the other hand, automation technology has developed towards intelligent and adaptive systems including some from the above mentioned fields of automation. Connecting them with modern information and communication technologies makes the idea of an intelligent and unmanned mine more and more feasible in the near future. This requires intensive co-operation and co-ordination between the mining industry and manufacturers of mining machinery. This has been successfully accomplished in the five-year Intelligent Mine research and development program as well as the three years of subsequent implementation of its results in Finland. The basic elements of an Intelligent MineTM concept are:mine-wide information and data acquisition system; high-speed two-directional mine-wide communication network for real-time monitoring and control; computerised information management, mine planning, control and maintenance systems; automated and tele-operated machinery and equipment which are connected to the information system; and links to the public information networks. The degree of automation of an intelligent mine depends on many technical and economical factors. The basic precondition for such an approach is that it will improve the total economy of the mine. This paper will describe the Intelligent Mine Technology Program with the results. Also the implementation which took place during starting of a new underground mine (Outokumpu Chrome Oy Kemi Mine) will be described.

DIVERSITY There are plenty of examples to show that diversity has been the fundamental downfall of many organisations, particularly when you consider the international position. What about core business, the return of companies to key competence directions and market focus. The stockmarket for instance defines groups and companies in key groups of core business. The expectation is that companies toe the line and do not diversify across their areas of defined expertise. In essence, the market has given notice that the requirements are to focus and stick to our core business. So what right does the conference have to suggest that diversity is the key to prosperity. Hasn't the organiser read the book, studied the history, listened to the market - obviously not. Have they got it wrong, My feeling and belief is no - the organisers have got it right. However, the matter is not as simple as first perceived. What is Diversity, or Diversification as I would prefer? Is it a product position? Is it a geographic position? Is it an expansion or change in services offered? Does a gold mining company diversify into copper or diamonds or aluminium or nickel? Does a gold miner in Australia diversify into China or Kazakhstan or West Africa? How do the two relate? They don't. A successful company will always possess a 'core competence' not so much a 'core business'. The best example of this is the service company extraordinaire - McDonalds. They don't sell hamburgers or french fries, they sell a service, a convenience, a lifestyle. The core business is hamburgers and if McDonalds were to diversify further into new styles of hamburgers, I suggest to you they would fail. But if McDonalds were to diversify into other products based on their 'core competence', provision of service, then I would suggest to you they would be very successful. Performance driver trees or KPI trees are reasonably well-known tools for analysing performance in mining operations. However, the tools are often not user friendly. They may be technically correct but they are often clunky. This means they donÆt promote simple management decision-making and donÆt encourage businesses to make them an integrated part of optimising their operations. This paper describes a simple but effective driver tree process and tool that has been successfully implemented and used to aid decision making across a number of mining and processing operations. The important aspects of employing driver trees to assist in management of operations are to ensure that the chosen solution:includes a reporting solution, provides the bottom line impact of the performance indicators, automatically gathers the necessary data that reconciles with existing reports, and is built around a review process that fits with existing management processes. An adequate solution enables operators to identify where there are performance gaps and to quickly prioritise the urgency for addressing these issues. Two case studies are chosen to illustrate the critical success factors of implementing a performance driver tree solution. The first is a large, complex open pit operation. The driver trees, reporting and management processes were initially established for the mining and processing aspects of the operations. Once the initial solution was bedded down, a follow-up project was carried out to establish the equivalent solution for the support areas of the business. The final solution covered stand alone performance driver trees for mining, processing, engineering, maintenance, health and safety, human resources and finance. These individual driver trees were integrated into a total solution that showed how all of the identified KPIÆs impact profit and quantified the dollar impact of all variations. The reporting solution that was put in place automatically creates prioritised lists of variances for the business to address. The second case study is a performance diagnostic project where driver trees were used to assess where gaps in performance were occurring, and then to evaluate the impacts of proposed initiatives.

The beneficiation potentials of two Indian iron ore slime samples by flotation technique using both cationic and anionic collectors are investigated. The direct and reverse flotation of slimes using oleic acid and dodecylamine as the collector have been studied using both conventional cell and flotation column to upgrade the iron content. The characterisation studies of iron ore slimes indicated that the samples are extremely fine in nature and contain substantial amounts of martite, magnetite, goethite, limonite, kaolinite and quartz beside hematite as the dominant iron mineral phase. The samples on average contain around 52 - 58 per cent Fe, four to seven per cent SiO2 and five to six per cent Al2O3. Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the slimes, it is attributed that both the samples need to be deslimed by hydrocyclone before flotation. The results of both cell and column studies on sample I showed that a feed containing 57.5 per cent Fe could be upgraded to 65.5 per cent Fe at 50 per cent overall recovery with simultaneous decrease in SiO2 and Al2O3 content to 2.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively by using oleic acid as the collector. In the case of sample II, it has been established that reverse flotation of silica is the better technique to improve both the grade and recovery of iron. Batch flotation studies in cell indicated that a product with 63.1 per cent Fe could be obtained at 40.0 per cent yield with 63.6 per cent iron recovery by the combination of reagents such as gum acacia, sodium hexa meta phosphate and dodecylamine. The performance of column flotation techniques is far superior to that of the cell with respect to both grade and recovery. The concentrates are found to be quite suitable for commercial exploitation as pellet feed.

Numerous recent analyses have shown that future demand for a broad range of critical commodities is unlikely to be met by new discoveries and recycling alone. The only practical alternative source to address this shortfall comes from orebodies which are currently either uneconomic or inaccessible. A common assumption is that a simple rise in commodity price will render these deposits economic. The mining industry has a long history of innovation allowing economic production from increasingly low grade and technically challenging orebodies. Industry “roadmaps” have been produced on a regular basis, with the aim of identifying future innovations which will allow this progression to continue. At the same time, there have been relatively few systematic analyses of the actual range of challenges facing undeveloped orebodies. The aim of this study is to analyse the mix of challenges faced by a group of undeveloped orebodies in order to better understand the relative importance and necessity of innovations applicable to the deposits, with the ultimate aim of determining the relative value and impact of possible innovations to the economic viability of those deposits. Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: a minimum filling rate of 250 m3/h, a curing time of 28 days, and minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

BioLix is the term for a new class of biologically-derived lixiviants for precious metals (gold and silver) recovery. BioLix can be used as an alternative to cyanide on virgin and spent ores. The BioLix process is based on inducing microbial enzymatic reactions that generate organo-lixiviant chemicals. The bioprocess involves a two-stage culture strategy. First, specialty microorganisms are cultured to generate a high biomass. Then, a food-grade quality amendment is introduced that forces the microorganisms to produce the organo-lixiviant. The second-stage culture is applied to the ore where the microbial/lixiviant system acts on mineral surfaces to extract precious metals. The process operates at ambient temperatures and near neutral pH. This paper will examine the BioLix process through an extensive laboratory development and demonstration project. Laboratory development consisted of identifying and isolating specialty microorganisms and inducing agents for the production of the organo-lixiviant solutions. A demonstration was performed on low-grade and high-grade oxidised ore from the Buffalo Valley mine in Nevada, USA. Results indicate that the BioLix process was comparable to cyanide in terms of gold recovery and operated at near neutral pH and ambient temperatures. Applications for the BioLix process will be discussed including spent-ore re-leaching, cyanide replacement for virgin ore, and in situ mining.

This paper discusses the significant land use changes that have occurred in the Latrobe Valley during 150 years of white occupation. The developments and changes were haphazard and made with little thought as to their setting or their environmental consequences. As a result many landscape and land management problems have not been addressed.This paper contends that the mistakes will continue unless an overall plan for the landscape of the area is developed and implemented. The concept of 'Greening the Valley' is introduced. It aims to provide focus for a comprehensive co-ordinated plan which caters for the need to restore the landscape and the need to provide for future land use. The plan will seek to draw on three major landscape features of the Latrobe Valley: the natural setting of the hills, rivers, valleys and forests; the agricultural land use including the forestry plantations; and the industrial complexes and urban areas.Rehabilitation of mining areas is a key element of the plan but must be put in a regional context and not be treated as an isolated function of a single organisation. A major challenge will be to integrate the worked out areas into useful and significant landscapes. The paper concludes by explaining the process that will be followed in an attempt to realise the concept.

The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. The extensive literature on sulfide flotation indicates that pyrite poorly floats under alkaline condition. Xanthate concentration has a positive effect on pyrite flotation, but above a pH of 11, pyrite seems to be strongly depressed, independently of the concentration in xanthate. In this investigation, aeration and xanthate concentration effects were studied for pyrite flotation conditioned at pH 11 with lime. Results presented in this paper include surface infrared analyses and pulp chemistry measurements which have showed that aeration had a dual effect on pyrite flotation. It induced pyrite surface activation by oxygen, and oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric hydroxides or oxyhydroxides species. It also favoured dissolution of CO2, leading to calcium carbonate precipitation and adsorption onto pyrite surface. Both CO2 dissolution and ferrous oxidation generated protons and decreased pulp pH. Pyrite flotation was observed to be effective with a statistical monolayer of xanthate that could be adsorbed as mixture of dixanthogen and metal-xanthate complex. Non-floated fractions showed high amounts of carbonate, and presence of hydroxyl iron sulfate (Fen(OH)m(SO4)p, xH2O) which have inhibited the hydrophobicity effect of adsorbed xanthate. Environmental desulfurisation could be improved by aeration control causing pyrite oxidation and pH decrease to reach optimal flotation condition with a relatively low xanthate concentration.

Improved understanding of the variables that influence hydrocyclone performance is of increasing interest to the iron ore industry, where hydorcyclones are widely used to deslime fine ore. In many cases, the impact of particular variables is not quantified sufficiently well experimentally to ensure that industrial performance will match expectations. The current work focused on developing and implementing a systematic methodology to evaluate and compare the performance of four different hydrocyclones in a desliming application. A critical component of the project was the design and construction of a pilot-scale hydrocyclone rig using state of the art monitoring and sampling methods. A wide ranging test programme was conducted to quantify the effect on metallurgical performance of the key hydrocyclone variables such as pressure, feed density, vortex finder size, spigot size and hydrocyclone make/overall design. Details of the experimental approach are presented, along with a discussion of the sizing analysis methods used. Performance criteria were established to assess the four hydrocyclones. The effects of each major variable were quantified over a wide range of conditions. The results show that clear performance differentiation was achieved, enabling the selection of the optimum configuration. The results from this work demonstrate the benefit of objectively assessing the performance of nominally equivalent units in selecting an optimum configuration that best satisfies the performance criteria.

Competition in the mining industry is the main driving force for both equipment manufacturers and end users to develop and apply the most cost efficient solution to a mining problem. Therefore the challenge to find new solutions is usually met by several suppliers under various factors of influence affecting specifications. Time and timing are particularly important, but all new developments ultimately have to successfully perform on site.Consideration of all aspects of planning, manufacturing, user liaison and ultimate satisfactory commissioning hinges on the necessities of assessing of all the expectations in the mining application and the requirements of the concept and layout team. To apply the maximum available technical competence with solid thorough workmanship is the best possible foundation for success of underground machinery development.

Many mining operations developed in the last 15 years have not performed to expectations. Problems experienced include lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability problems, unplanned dilution, reduced metallurgical performance and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Most of these problems can be directly attributed to decisions made on the basis of geoscience interpretations and estimates. Recent case studies continue to provide examples of unplanned events linked to the use of geoscience information. These studies illustrate the need to improve the way geological information is used in mine feasibility and operations. Comprehensive assessment of the consequences of inappropriate technical decision making is still rare; however, the information that is reported highlights the significant financial impact on a companyÆs bottom line.

The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.
