This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. Production scheduling is an important element of the mine planning process. The production schedule specifies the quantities of mineral to extract, the source of this ore, the timing of extraction and, where necessary, the quantity and timing of backfill placement. These details are important in linking long-term strategic goals to short-term operational planning. Mine scheduling techniques form the basis for communicating information concerning the overall impact of design and planning changes to a wide range of people at many levels within an organisation. Consequently the techniques used for mine scheduling must support the decision-making process by consistently providing high quality schedules in response to revised and updated data. A new mixed integer programming (MIP) model has been developed to generate optimal production schedules for underground stoping operations. The model maximised the before-tax Net Present Value of the production schedule while satisfying constraints such as contained metal tonnage, hoisting capacity, stope geometry relationships and stope backfilling demands. Zero-one variables were used to represent the decision to extract or backfill each stope in a particular time period. Continuous variables, capable of having non-integer values, were used to denote the quantity of ore or backfill associated with a specific stope in a given time period. A case study is presented to demonstrate the significant improvement in before-tax NPV over a comparative manual production schedule in a large underground mine. The MIP model allows for further modification to reduce solution times and meet the needs of individual mines.

The European Union (EU) have recently issued new Threshold Limit Value-Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) for diesel exhaust contaminants, which are CO, NO2 and DPM. The new limits for CO and NO2 were issued in 2017 whilst the one for DPM was issued in 2019. However, in order to allow EU mines to formulate strategies to comply with these new limits, the EU granted a transition period in which mines could use the old limits until the new limits are enforced. The new limit for CO and NO2 will be enforced from 21 August 2023 whilst the one for DPM will be enforced from 21 February 2026. The new limit for NO2 and DPM is very low, 0.5 ppm for NO2 and 0.05 mg/m3 of Elemental Carbon (EC) for DPM. Combination of these two limits would be the lowest among all mining jurisdictions worldwide. It poses a huge compliance challenge to EU mines if they keep using diesel machines. Therefore, a study and a field trial were carried out by the author in 2019–2021 to investigate whether replacing diesel machines with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) would be the best answer to this challenge. This paper outlines results of this study and field trial.

Geologists working in mountainous terrain were the first to map and interpret in three dimensions and as a result, made the first contributions to our understanding of mountain building and structural geology. However, geology during the 1900s has been dominantly a two-dimensional exercise in data gathering and interpretation. The standard output of geological surveys and university research has been the geological map and the standard methodology of the mineral explorer has been surface mapping and prospecting. The future will be concerned far more with the third dimension.

The results of theoretical and technological investigations have been presented for the application of electrochemical technology in copper-nickel flotation processing schemes. The sorbed xanthate and dithiophosphate products on chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite have been studied in distinct polarisation conditions of mineral suspensions. Optimum electrochemical pulp treatment parameters have been worked out for copper, nickel, pyrrhotite and other flotation cycles. The method has been examined in pilot plant conditions over a long period of time, technological efficiency has been evaluated corresponding to the industrial flotation process at the Norilsk plant.

The tragedy of the Moura No. 2 incident has lost much of its emotional mileage for those organisations that thrive on loss and suffering. However, for the families, workers, mine owners and operators in the Queensland underground coalfields, the challenge of delivering a positive outcome, though well underway, is in its infancy. The pressure created by interested parties is necessary for overcoming the inertia involved in change; but they cannot deliver the change. The responsibility ultimately resides at each individual minesite with the people who work there each day.

Major underground gold mine developments are not common in Australia especially when they are totally owned and hence financed by a relatively small public company. Ballarat Goldfields Limited with its Ballarat East Project is such a company. Financing a $20m underground exploratory access programme in a poor economic climate places added importance on the quality of the project. Critical factors such as ore reserves, environment, planning and the development program are of immense importance in devising and implementing a workable finance package that satisfies both the shareholder and the project's needs.

Hydrocyclones are widely used in both mining and various industrial sectors. Considerable fundamental research work on the modelling of hydrocyclone classifiers has been carried out through the past 25 years. Based on the similarity principle, the hydrocyclone classification was taken as a whole physical process and a group of similarity numbers were obtained with the help of dimensional analysis in this paper. Then, the functional dependences of the similarity numbers have been established. The variables optimisation was carried out with the multiple objectives linear planning programs developed in this study.

In recent years rehabilitation of mine sites has become a principal focus of mining legislation in Victoria. In previous eras, managed rehabilitation commenced, if at all, towards the end of mining operations. Planning for rehabilitation works now commences before an exploration licence is granted.The paper gives a brief overview of the requirements for rehabilitation under the Mineral Resources Development Act 1990, Extractive Industries Act 1966, and related environmental planning legislation including rehabilitation bonds and enforcement provisions.A brief review of the current taxation provisions is also included.

In considering the architectural design of the group of buildings which make the surface workings of a mine, the variety of function of the buildings is the most outstanding feature. It falls to the architect to unify the group in a manner which still expresses the function of the individual buildings. In achieving this, many perspective studies were made at an early stage and as the area was developed, a scale model was produced initially for design study purposes and later completed as a model of the final development.

In the period since 1989 the Yabulu Nickel Refinery of Queensland Nickel has undergone a transformation both in terms of the nickel laterite ore feed and the refined nickel product. These two changes were mutually supporting, as will be shown in the following paper. It had been realised since the early-1980s that the Greenvale orebody would be exhausted by 1992. Consequently planning had been in progress throughout the 1980s for the importation of overseas ore as a replacement for the Greenvale ore. The existence of extensive lateritic ore deposits in New Caledonia and Indonesia made these locations the natural focus of attention. With the three Japanese ferronickel smelters sourcing their nickel garnierite ore feed from these locations it was relatively easy for the miners to supply the overlying limonite ore to Yabulu. This limonite ore was previously discarded as waste. The Yabulu refinery now receives about 85 per cent of its ore from these two overseas sources. The transition from Greenvale ore to imported ore occurred gradually between 1989 and 1993. It was during the ore importation planning stage of the mid 1980s that Queensland Nickel commenced the technical investigation which led to the ammoniacal solvent extraction (ASX) plant installation and the product change from nickel oxide to nickel metal.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. The development of computers is examined in the context of the mining industry. The risk element is given as a reason for the slow introduction of the computer into mining. Dealing with mining's uncertainty is seen as a major role for computers. The use of computers is traced from early accounting applications to current involvement with all aspects of mining. The problems associated with increasing use of computers and their impact on management is discussed in depth. Disenchantment of management is thought to arise from unfulfilled expectations. Contributory causes are given as overselling of computers, reaction against change, speed and growth of computer technology. The solution is seen to lie in a more dominant role for user management in the development of computer systems and greater emphasis on education. The computer of the future will then become integral to the mining process as an extension of management's planning and control function.

EARLY HISTORYIt is 91 years since the epic discovery of gold at the eastern end of Kalgoorlie's main street appropriately named Hannan's Street after the prospector who found the first gold here on17 June, 1893.The Spirit that motivated the early prospectors in their search for gold in this thirsty sun-burned land, unmapped, uncompromising and difficult is characteristic of gold prospectors the world over. Conditions have changed since then substituting comparative comfort for previous austerity and privation, but the quest-ing spirit, the everlasting optimism, the perseverance in the face of frustration .and disappointment still exists.It exists with the prospector who more often than not is a company geologist; it exists with the shareholder enjoying through his investment a vicarious participation in this wonderful, exciting industry and not the least with those people who have chosen the goldmining industry as their career.

Knelson concentrators are commonly used to recover fine liberated gold in gold processing plants. The decision to employ a gravity gold circuit consisting of centrifugal devices such as Knelsons is primarily taken on the results of GRG tests, among other considerations. While the GRG test is considered a material characterisation test, which is useful in the design stages, its use in evaluating the performance of an existing unit is questionable. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that it is time consuming and costly. This paper examines the validity of the GRG test for performance evaluation and discusses alternative test work that can be performed to evaluate the performance characteristics of an operating machine. Principles that are useful in selecting optimal operating parameters, such as optimal fluidising water flow rate for a given ore/machine combination, are also discussed and illustrated with laboratory and plant data.

The first production stage in any mining operation is the breaking of whole rock into fragments small enough for loading and subseq- uent handling. This primary fragmentation is most frequently accomplished with blasting. The maximum fragment size and the fragment size distribution have an influence on the subsequent loading, handling and crushing costs. It is assumed that total rock fragmen- tation in practice is a result of an interact- ing array of radial cracks from various blastholes. The representation for the basic pattern of radial cracks emitted from a particular blasthole is first described. A model is then developed simulating the interaction between blastholes at various burdens and spacings, and in simultaneous and delayed modes. The resultant picture is analysed and a fragment size distribution calculated. Methods of incorporating the existing faults in the rock are also discussed. Finally application of this model to various facets of mining are considered.

The current boom in the mining sector has required mining operations to ramp up production to meet the international demand for minerals. This increase in production is putting enormous pressure on on-site professionals, and in particular the role of the on-site geotechnical engineer is ballooning. Mining engineers are focused on machinery and schedules; geologists concentrate on grade control and resources; everything else becomes the responsibility of the geotechnical engineer. Day to day geotechnical engineering is very different from geotechnical design work, and a practical understanding of both is required to successfully carry out either role. In addition, a successful geotechnical engineer has to have a good understanding of almost all technical aspects of mining. Even more important are good communications skills and the ability to problem solve on the fly. None of these skills are taught at tertiary institutions and therefore need to be learnt in the workplace. However, the shortage of geotechnical professionals means that young engineers do not always receive the mentorship and training they need to develop confidence and technical effectiveness. This paper outlines the changing role of on-site geotechnical engineers and presents some thoughts on how industry and young engineers can adjust to the changes.

At mines with low tonnes per vertical metre, like the Jundee Mine in Western Australia, operated by Newmont Asia Pacific, high development rates across multiple mining areas are critical to achieving the delivery outlined, or promised, in the annual business plan. The challenge is to deliver the short-term requirements while keeping in balance with the long-term strategic direction. Newmont Jundee has developed a system called æMine Planning by QuartersÆ that integrates the planning process with the business process in one end-to-end continuum. Short-, medium- and long-term schedules are reviewed and updated by applying four integrated subprocesses, which capture new information as it becomes available. The four subprocesses are: resource development planning û evaluating mineral resource,reserve development planning û preliminary design for new reserves,mine operating planning û final mine design for reserves, andmine production planning û detailed plans for stoping a proved reserve. Commercial mine planning software is used in these subprocesses to facilitate the flow of information into a central storage æhubÆ for uploading into the rolling business plan. A regular and consistent quarterly review helps to identify and qualify areas of business risk at an early stage, allowing time to plan for contingency and minimise the impact of the risk.

The world-class Bulyanhulu gold deposit (375 t Au) is in the Sukumaland greenstone belt, Northwestern Tanzania. The main mineralised quartz vein structure, termed Reef one, occurs at the contact of felsic metavolcanic rocks on the hanging wall and mafic metavolcanic rocks on the footwall. Reef one is dominated by massive quartz together with pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration in the footwall basalt is characterised by extensive chloritisation, calcification and silicification, which is strongest near the vein. Sericitisation also locally occurs adjacent to the vein. Metamorphic hornblende and plagioclase (albite) increase in abundance at a distance of 120 m from the vein and reflect the gradation into less altered rocks. The increasing abundance of chlorite, calcite, quartz and local sericite near Reef one, coupled by replacement textures suggests that most of these footwall minerals are the product of hydrothermal alteration, rather than regional metamorphism. Geochemical data shows slight enrichment in Ca, Fe and As towards the vein, whereas Zn in several drill holes becomes enriched away from Reef one. The Bulyanhulu gold deposit is a quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite shear controlled vein with an adjacent extensive chlorite-quartz-calcite hydrothermal alteration zone (and a limited local sericite alteration zone) that passes to a hornblende-albite metamorphic assemblage further into the footwall.

Recoverable copper and gold estimates for resource models and ore control routing decisions at Batu Hijau were initially based on flotation testwork from several commercial laboratories. Due to the greater number of copper and gold assay grade available, regression relationships were developed between assay grades and flotation recoveries. Other recovery controlling variables such as oxidation and lithology were included to improve the regression models. With additional drilling, more flotation work was carried out and the regression models were revised to include the new flotation data, also alteration classification and in situ pH. The regression models were replaced in favour of spatially derived models for ore control and short range mine planning. To harness local variability in the block model, blast hole flotation testing is carried out in unison with routine grade assaying. Recovery data are processed (kriged) simultaneously with grade assay data prior to ore polygon delineation. Short range mine planning utilises this model in conjunction with a spatial recovery model derived from drill core flotation data. Long range mine planning utilises the æhybridÆ recovery model whereby the globally robust regression recovery models are overprinted by a spatial (kriged) recovery estimate where flotation data density is adequate (Phase II reserve).
