In mining industries, materials handling costs represent a significant component of the operational cost. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading system with the lowest loading operation cost. These are queuing theory, bunching theory, linear programming and genetic algorithm. Among them, genetic algorithm is a simple method and applied for preliminary selection of the loading system. In this study, gathering information from anomaly No 2 of Gol-e-Gohar iron mine of Iran, loading system (number and its capacity) has been optimised by genetic algorithm. The study results showed that two shovels 8.25 m3 are required for the removal of 60 million tonnes of overburden. After removal overburden, these two shovels contribute to the extraction of 42 million tonnes of ore with a stripping ratio of 1:1.

Pressures are foreseen for departments of metallurgy to make. radical changes in their undergraduate curricula. The curricula need to be made more attractive to high'school students in -order to increase the number of enrolled students. The distinctive character of extractive metallurgy needs to be emphasised to resist encroachment by chemical engineering. There should be content relevant to each of the professional functions and, particularly, to' society's broad expectations of metallurgists. Content, teaching methods, etc. need to be acceptable to women, mature-age -students, Aboriginals, and other groups, as well as young white males. Learning experiences should be negotiable by the students in response to the advent of learning packages delivered via personal computers. All of these needs could be satisfied by a radical change. in attitudes and objectives during the design; implementation and evaluation stages of . a new type of curriculum, using a wide range of problem-based learning experiences..

This paper sets out a number of means by which professionals can reduce or eliminate the risk of professional liability whether as directors, employees, partners, independent consultants or contractors. A relationship between client and professional is commonly cited as an example of a fiduciary relationship: the professional "undertakes or agrees to act for or on behalf of or in the interests of' the client "in the exercise of a power or discretion which will affect the interests of that other person in a legal or practical sense."2 As a fiduciary, a professional must ensure that his or her exercise of power does not result in a position of ascendancy or undue influence over the client. Also, a professional must avoid situations where there is scope for even the perception of potential conflict between his or her professional duty to the client and his or her own Interest.

The paper reviews recent valuations of mineral properties, many of which are at an early stage of exploration. The various methods used are outlined. The problem of comparing, in terms of whether it is fair and reasonable, a highly subjective opinion of the present value of a portfolio of exploration tenements with a vendor consideration, the real value of which, in most cases, lies at some indeterminate time in the future because of the application by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) of escrow conditions, is highlighted. Examples are given of some of the questionable logic used by consultants in handling this difficult issue. A proposal for revision to current flotation and listing practice which, the author believes, would circumvent the problem and at the same time provide better protection for the investing public is offered for Consideration.

Battle Mountain Gold Company was created in August 1985 as a spin-off of the United States of America Pennzoil Company's gold interests.Pajingo Gold Mine Pty. Ltd. currently has its headquarters and base for operations located in Townsville, Queensland. The Company's main current activities are the exploration and evaluation of the Pajingo Gold Property situated some 50 kilometres south-east of Charters Towers and in the northern Drummond Basin.The discovery of the Pajingo gold mineralisation by the Company was the indirect result of a regional program established to evaluate Carboniferous age volcanic plugs in north Queensland for gold mineralisation.

I have spent most of the past thirty-five years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American' Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited of Australia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining Investment.

The global recession of the 1980s drove commodity prices down and intensified cost competition. The 1990s saw a restructuring of the mining industry with the survivors adopting new technology, significantly increasing workplace productivity and reducing capital and operating costs. Major changes in mining industry business strategies evolved in the late-1980s including the development of miner - supplier - manufacturer - partnerships, cultural changes in work practices and common goals between the partners to reduce the cost of production. These industry trends are putting new demands on mining machine manufacturers and dealers both on the `hard' side of the machine business, such as research and product development programs, and on the `soft' side in terms of business processes, use of human resources and communication. The paper describes several mining industry trends as identified by a large supplier to the industry, and discusses the impact they are having, and will have, on mining machine development and the provision of product support services to the industry.

The Endeavor Mine, located to the north of Cobar, New South Wales, was purchased by CBH Resources Pty Ltd in September 2003. The operation has been producing lead and zinc concentrate continuously for over twenty-three years. In 2004, a water management program was instigated to improve the raw water use efficiency of the mining operation. The water management program involved the establishment of a Water Management Committee, a review and quantification of water use across the site, investigation and implementation of efficient water use practices, and workforce awareness training. The program has seen the amount of water used per tonne of ore milled reduced from an average of 1.08 kL/t in the March 2004 quarter, to 0.68 kL/t in the March 2005 quarter. This paper outlines the Endeavor Mine water management program and may serve as a model for other operations that are planning to improve their water use efficiency.

The present-day arrangement of old ( ? ) Palaeozoic and Mesozoic metamorphic rocks in eastern New Guinea lends some support to the concept of tens:konal dilation in Upper Cretaceous to Lower Tertiary time, It appears that the metamorphic core of the Morobe Arc (Glaessner, 1950) could have been rifted from the eastern flank of Cape York Peninsula, and then been carried north-eastward by some unspecified sub-crustal. tangential force. In the early stages of the rift it is thought.that submarine basalts may have extruded up the .'tension .scar and spread across the floor of the opening rift. Thick clastic muddy sediments derived almost exclusively from the rifted block were then spread across the floor of the opening rift. Later ~ertiary lateral movements from east to west along the Markham-Ramu Fault appear to have bent the northern end of the Morobe Arc towards the.east,,causing the intense folding in the sediments of the Aure Trough.

In making any attempts to determine the depositional environments in which coal seams accumulated it would be useful to establish whether there is a pattern, or patterns, of development which the majority of the seams have followed. To this end, the distribution of types of coal seam sequences found in the standard petrographic profiles of about a hundred Australian coal seams of Permian and Triassic age has been examined statistically, using the "chi square test" with the limiting probability set at O·Gl.Results indicate that non-random conditions have probably prevailed during the deposition of most of the seams. More samples are needed for conclusive results.The plants, or some other internal feature of the swamp environment, have been the important controlling factor in the development of the seam sequences.Comparison has been made with some British Carboniferous coals.

This paper will discuss Fordertechnik dawatering screens and their application in process industries. Fordertechnik screens were designed for the dewatering of deslimed, wet fines materials encountered in the mineral beneficiation, sand and coal processing industries. However, these screens have also been used in such industries as municipal waste treatment, paper pulp, chemicals and the food industries. Fordertechnik screens are of simple design and, as a result, offer low capital and maintenance costs. The design is based on the use of twin counter-rotating vibratory motors which provide high frequency, low amplitude linear movement of the screen deck which is essential for high production requirements. A computer simulation has been developed to model the flow of copper ore in Isa Mine. It simulates extraction of copper ore from the 1100 orebody by load-haul-dump (LHD) units to ore passes, haulage from chutes on 19 level by Rockflo trains to crusher bins, crushing and hoisting. It can assess in terms of the tonnage and head grade of ore hoisted, the effect of varying operating strategies, as well as measur- ing shortfalls in required capacities of any of the operations (extraction, hauling, crushing and hoisting). The simulation was designed as a modular, deterministic, steady-state model with parameter input allowing complete flexibility in its use. Queuing theory is used extensively to evaluate the effect of interference at potential bottlenecks. The model has been used to determine the effect on production of varying train sizes, maintenance policies on the haulage circuit, orepass capacities, and extraction operations.

The ore body being worked is about one hundred feet in length by seventy feet in width. A face of about fifteen feet is stoped over the whole level at one operation, this height standing without any timber.Double lines of logs, twenty feet in length and from ten inches to one foot in thickness at the small end, are then laid longitudinally, butt to butt, and breaking joint from end to end of the ore body they are at ten feet centres from wall to wall. The starting logs are single for the first ten feet and their ends are hitched into the solid rock. These are called "miners" and are the logs which are picked up as the level underneath is worked up. The double layer gives a better chance of picking up. Logs are now laid from the centre of the ore body at right angles to the miners, the ends being hitched into the walls. A space, seven feet wide, is left open right through the centre of the ore body...

The energy crisis and the general increase in fuel prices have changed the position of coal in the world. Countries need to review their policies on coal, depending on available reserves and their accessibility. On the demand side, a distinction should be made between the steel industry's specific demand for coking coal and the needs of power stations where coal is used in competition with other sources of energy. Coal consumption in these two sectors is expected to increase considerably over the foreseable future. Some countries have sufficient coal of their own to meet this increased demand but others will have to rely on imports. As a result, the tonnage of coal transported by sea may double by 1985. The coal industry lacks flexibility. The opening of new mines and the construction of a transport system to ship the coal takes time. This time-lag, coupled with the enormous expenditure involved, makes long-term contracts between producers and consumers essential.

A range of materials are treated in zinc fuming processes to recover metal values and produce benign slag waste products. The selection of the optimum process conditions in these various technologies can be greatly assisted by the use of a chemical thermodynamic model of the system. In this paper the effects of slag chemistry on the liquidus temperatures, subliquidus phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties are described by a FACT model of the ZnO-PbO-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 system. In addition new experimental data on the effect of Al2O3 on the liquidus are presented. The implications of these findings for plant practice are discussed.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs. INTRODUCTION Tyres are a significant cost in mining. Tyre costs make up between 25% and 30% of the operating costs of large (i.e. 100 tonne and larger capacity) open-cut mine haultrucks. The amount of raw material used in the production of cement can be reduced by partially supplementing it by pozzolanic waste material without changing its properties negatively. This paper discusses results of an investigation using slag from the Pt industry, from the production of steel using Midrex processes as well as fly ashes from different coal power plants in South Africa. These are blended in a 20 per cent slag or fly ash to 80 per cent cement ratio. The properties of the mixtures depend on the phase composition, chemistry, grain size and the sources of the materials. The results are promising, but show variable behaviour depending on slag and cement composition. Compressive strength tests as well have heat flow curves showing the hydration behaviour, indicating that 20 per cent addition of slag or fly ash to ordinary Portland cement is viable. There is a large potential to use slag in cement mixtures and this study can be used to develop cements that will positively influence CO2 emissions and help to reduce large slag and fly ash stockpiles.

Financial theory often takes some time to penetrate industry and when it does it can result in a paradigm shift in valuations and mental models. The Black Scholes option valuation was first published in 1973, although the authors were only awarded a Nobel Prize in 1997. The valuation of real options has been applied to the oil and gas industry for some time, however it has only recently been more widely applied to the non-oil, mineral resource sector. The use of real option valuation (ROV) for the valuation of marginal and short mine life resource projects is a more useful valuation tool than the conventional DCF, NPV valuation tool. The application of ROV has major implications for corporate strategy. It generally favours equity over debt funding and non-hedging over hedging. A retrospective assessment of the successful development of the Lennard Shelf Operations demonstrates the concepts of implementing real options and the value destruction of limiting operational flexibility through debt and hedging activities.

The Chairman of this afternoon's session is Dick Carter. This afternoon is the culmination of this conference. We've looked in the first session at regulation; in the second session at valuation techniques and this session we look at valuation in practice. Dick's involvement in the mineral industry has been wide ranging and distinguished. Dick has worked with BHP since 1960, when he joined BHP Steel as a commercial trainee. Dick holds a B.Comm. from the Newcastle University College of the University of New South Wales and was educated at the Australian Administrative Staff College and Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme. During the past decade, he has headed the minerals group's Aluminium Divison, Resource Planning and Development, Non-Ferrous Metals and Business Development Organisations. Dick currently serves as Executive Director of BHP Gold Mines Limited and Managing Director of Ok Tedi Mining Limited. His experience covers Australian Manganese Company, Mineral Deposits Limited, Northern Rivers Rutile, Tasmanian Electrometallurgical Company Limited, Mount Newman Joint Venture, Worsley Aluminium and Carnilya Hill Joint Venture Operating Committee. His industry associations include the Executive Board of the Gold Producers Association, the Federal Executive of the Australian Goldmining Industry Council as well as the World Gold Council. The writer had the pleasure of several months' laboratory tests on a metallurgical process for copper ores devised by Mr. W. H. Corbould, Consulting Engineer, North Queensland. Mr. Corbould's research work in this direction commenced somesix years ago, and he eventually succeeded in obtaining a good extraction of copper and a resulting solution practically free from iron and other impurities. The commercial operation of the process was investigated and special machines with novel features were designed. OUTLINE OF THE PROCESS.The process described in detail in the following pages, required for successful application that the ores contain at least the minimum ratio of sulphur to copper, consistent with the production of sulphadising roasting conditions.
